From a very, very young age, I was curious, and would constantly steal out to the sunny meadow right outside our cove much to Mother's dismay. I was a mere 2 weeks old, and first experienced the sun, the heat not helping my overall temperature. I skittered back inside to cool down. I am lava, but too much heat hurts. Mother always wanted me to stay in the cove, but I did not like the cove after a short time of confinement.
I never met my father, but Mother told me that I didn't want to. He was a, and I quote, 'grump without family logic'. Mother grew tired of him in the first few weeks of waiting for me. It has been just me and Mother all of my life, growing bored constantly in the cove, confined to the cool stone inside.
Mother would leave every day, and come back very late with dinner- assorted fruits and such. Never meat- an allergy I have prevents me from eating it- and never garden food either because Mother simply did not like it. Every night during dinner I would ask to go outside, and Mother always refused. I eventually gave up, sitting in my overwhelming boredom day after day. She saw this, and finally let me out. I would travel quietly and swiftly to the village border a few miles north of home, and listen to them babble in what I learned was English.
The one day though, a boy was sitting in front of my spot, where I normally hid and watched the village people. He had short brown hair, soft chocolate brown eyes, and a gentle smile.
"Hey. I've seen you hide here before. What's your name? I'm Rob."
Using the English I'd learned, I responded, slightly shyly. "I am Preston."
"Say, aren't you a creeper?"
I shrunk down, responding fearfully. "Yes."
"Why hide?"
"They do not like me here. Mother does not like me here either. I should not be here, but am."
"Robert? What're you doing there?" A gruff voice called.
"Nothing Dad!"
"Then get over here. You have no reason to be over there."
The boy ran off to where he came from. I sat there, moving my hand in the air, copying the hand of the merchant as he wrote on his papers. But this time, my motion caught his eye, and he looked over. I froze, terrified of the wrath I was about to face.
Screaming, he told the village.
"BEAST! THERE'S A BEAST IN THE BUSHES!"
The village panicked, but one man remained calm, staring at me. He was older, with gray in his dark brown hair. He had a crown- a short one made of emerald- the crown of the King.
"Come out, beast. Show yourself!" He called calmly.
I stepped into the light, and I felt the whole village hold its breath. Three boys stood behind the King, one of which I had met only minutes before. Rob, and what I would assume were two of his friends. Why they took refuge behind the King, I had no idea. The King beckoned me forward, and the village collectively stepped back. Only the four in front of me remained still.
"What are you? A beast? A hybrid?"
"Lava creeper, sir. I am terribly sorry to interrupt this village. I only meant to learn."
"Learn what?"
"The ways of the human. English. Writing. I wanted to learn so I could show my mother."
"Where's your mother?"
"Home, a few miles south."
"What's your name, creeper?"
"Preston, sir..."
"Well Preston, I would advise you to stay away. And you seem literate enough. How old are you?"
"In your time sir? Or mine?"
"Mine."
"6, sir."
"Then you are of no harm to anyone. Move along before I change my mind."
"Thank you, sir. I will not return."
"Now go."
I ran. Back at the cove, Mother stood glaring at me. She was angry I had broken my promise to stay in the meadow. Dinner was devoured in silence, Mother too angry to trust herself to speak quietly, and me too preoccupied with my thoughts. Later that night, I turned over in bed and faced Mother, who was cleaning up after dinner.
"Mother, I was not trying to upset you."
She glanced over at me. She spoke our native language only, so I had switched tongues the second I had stepped in the cove.
" Of course not, son. It was just stressful to think you had been caught, or killed. Now sleep, child. You will need it."
