Ch. 14

Chloe's POV
Brooke is dead. Poor Paige. She must be torn apart. I was never really that close to Brooke, but I felt a connection to her because Paige and I were twinnies.
The bear ran off. But I can still feel its presence. It's choosing which one of us to take next. We never should've gone right. Nia was right. I don't know what Brooke was talking about when she said to go right, but I stupidly agreed. I shouldn't have. It cost us two lives.
Snap. A silent snapping noise pierced the eerie silence behind me. I knew it was the bear. I looked around the group and could tell they heard it too. Snap. Another twig, but this time, it was in front of me, not behind. Snap. Snap. Snap. More twigs from all directions snapped. He was toying with us. I was about to say it, but Kendall beat me to it. "It's toying with us!" She quietly exclaimed. "Maddie, I'm scared!" Kenzie said, cowering to her sister's side. "It's ok Kenzie. Don't worry. I won't let anything happen to you." Maddie replied reassuringly. Kenzie nodded.
I saw the dark figure of the bear as it emerged from the trees. It moved slowly, but with dignity and confidence. It knew what it was doing. "Guys, run." I said calmly, but as we all bolted into a sprint, the calmness in all of us disappeared. I glanced over my shoulder. Maddie and Mackenzie were at the rear, then Paige, then me, and at the front was Kendall. The bear leaped. I knew exactly where it would land. Right on Maddie and Mackenzie. The bear landed right on Maddie, throwing Mackenzie to the ground hard. She didn't get up. "Maddie, no! Get off her!" Paige yelled. The bear immediately stopped fighting Maddie and looked at Paige. I thought my Twinnie would run and hide, but no. She held her ground. The bear advanced on Paige. When it was roughly 3 yards away, she ran. But with just one swipe, one of the bear's enormous paws scratched Paige across her back. She cried out in pain and fell to the ground. "Paigy!" I yelled. She turned her head and lifted a trembling hand. And with that hand, Paige waved. "Goodbye, Chloe!" She mouthed. With tears in my eyes, I waved back. "Bye, Paigy." And then the bear was on top of her. Paige didn't scream much; only a few cries were heard. I couldn't even tell when she died. "Chloe, move!" I heard Maddie yell at me. Immediately, I jumped out of the way. Maddie had blood in her face and an enormous gash in her arm, which was bleeding hard. In her other hand, she held something we probably should've used before we lost Nia. A Swiss Army knife. She ran up and stabbed the bear. The bear let out a whine and turned to her. It swiped at her unhurt arm, but Maddie moved and he missed. Savagely, Maddie stabbed the bear again and again until he was on top of her. "Maddie!" Kendall screamed. The bear seemed to tear Maddie apart. She never screamed, not once. Oh no. Maddie had no chance. After all, what good would a Swiss Army knife do when fighting a vicious bear? The bear stopped fighting. There was no movement from Maddie either. And then, the bear fell to the side, blood pouring from its neck. And slowly, Maddie stood. She looked around. Her face was a little bloody and so was the rest of her, but for the most part, she looked unhurt. Kendall and I ran up to hug her. Then, Maddie collapsed on me.
