Ch. 13
Paige's POV
Crunch, crunch, crunch... The noise of 12 tennis shoes hitting the ground as we walked filled my ears. Kendall was leaning on Maddie as we walked.
Then, there was a noise. The crunch, crunch, crunch stopped. We stood alert, listening to the sounds coming from the forest around us. Birds chirping, a cool breeze sweeping through our hair, the quiet chatter of squirrels or woodchucks having a conversation in a language foreign to us humans. Then there was that other sound. That other sound that we had dreaded, that other sound that made us stop dead in our tracks and not move an inch. That other sound that we had heard just before the bear had chased after us, and claimed Nia's body. That other sound that scared Mackenzie half out of her wits. That other sound that meant death. Then we saw its dark figure through the trees. The bear.
"Bear!" I exclaimed. Everyone gasped. "Run!" Kendall yelled. We all began to run. So did the bear. I looked back. Brooke was at the end, holding Kenzie's hand. "Brooke, Kenz, c'mon!" I yelled back to them. Brooke glanced over her shoulder. The bear was only a few yards behind them. Brooke stopped short for a split second, then put her hands on little Kenzie's back and shoved her as hard as she could. Kenzie flew forward and hit the ground hard. Spitting dirt, she scrambled to her feet and ran, barely glancing at Brooke. "Brooke, no!" I screamed. The bear lunged at Brooke and seconds later, was on top of her. Brooke, like Nia, was screaming bloody-murder. The bear scratched and bit at Brooke before her screaming came abruptly to an end. "No! Noo! Nooooo!" I screamed. The bear now took a piece of Brooke and ran. Again, our noses were filled with the scent of dead meat or something. I began to cry and hugged Kendall. "Paige, don't worry! Everything's gonna be ok!" Kendall attempted to reassure me. But it didn't work. Nothing would work. My older sister was gone forever and I would never see her again.
