Ch. Ten: Night at the Forge

At first, he thought that he hadn't heard her right. Yes, he's helped her with very personal things, but it's not like he looked. No, he respected her privacy as best as he could given the situation. Yet, sharing a bed ... Well, he supposed that he'd add that to the list of things that he'd never expect to happen to him. He knew that she didn't mean anything romantic by it, but why had she gone quiet for awhile after declining him sleeping on the floor? Could she be thinking of other things?

"Are you sure, (F/n)? I don't mind." She nodded, and his heart beat faster. Despite the situation, he was thankful. His dreams of (F/n) were coming true one by one. If they continued, perhaps, she'd agree to be just his. As queen, she could determine who she'd wish to marry. And as far as he knew, there wasn't anyone that had caught her eye. At least, she hadn't mentioned anyone, and he hoped that she never would unless it was him.

"Yeah." She smiled and glanced down to the sheets before she looked back up to him. "You deserve a good rest too."

"I ... Very well, then." He held up the shirt again. "And, would you like this?"

Would it have his scent? The question popped into her head before she had a chance to block it. She seriously needed to control her emotions; she didn't even have an answer to that question. Trying to regain herself, she looked to the dress that was on her. It would be nice to have clean clothes on. "Yes, thank you. Do you think it'll be long enough, though? I don't want it to ride up too much when I sleep." That would be embarrassing if he awoke and saw her makeshift chemise halfway up her.

"It might not be." He opened the top drawer of the dresser and attempted to hide the fact that the image of it being too short crossed his mind at that moment. Keiran pulled out a pair of braies. "I'll tie them tight on you." She nodded, relieved that she'd be properly covered.

Like he did when he placed her in the dress, he did so gently. The new clothes were on her, and they smelled a little bit like pine. It was relaxing. Keiran pulled the blanket over her. "I just need to organize a few things before joining you. I won't be long." She nodded and was thankful for the warmth of the blanket and new clothes. Soon, he left the room, and she closed her eyes, sleep beginning to take over her from the long day.

~~~~~~~~
Awakening in the morning, her eyes slowly opened due to the sunlight streaming through the window. She was on her right side, and the first sight that greeted her was an empty bed. Perhaps, it was a good thing that she didn't see him sleeping beside her. She had fallen asleep before he came to bed. If their faces were too close together ... (F/n) sighed. Well, maybe, she should use this time at the forge to figure out her feelings.
Hearing movement, she saw that Keiran was tucking a beige shirt into dark brown pants. His black leather boots were on his feet, but she couldn't help but chuckle when she saw his hair. It was naturally messy, but the bed must've made it more so. Bangs hung over his caramel eyes, and strands were sticking up in places. Her laughter, though, caught his attention, and his eyes soon met hers. "Your hair is a bit ..."
Realization hit him, and he smoothed it out. "Yes, well, a proper bed can do that." A small smile touched her lips, and he returned it. "How'd you sleep?"
"Well, I think all things considered." He soon came over and sat beside her on the bed. "But, what do we do for today? Has May left already to look for the magic user?"
"Yes, I went to ask her for some of her clothes, but she wasn't around." He glanced at what she was wearing. "I can cut one of my pairs of pants for you and give you another shirt in the meantime."
"Do you have enough? I don't want to use all of your clothes. I can wear the long dress if needed." She would've suggested cutting it, but it'd be good for her to have it once she received her new limbs. Then, it could fit her properly. And, May's clothes might not fit her. Until she got back, she didn't feel comfortable trying them on and using them. She wanted May's permission first.
"Yes, I do." He brushed some hair away from her face. "Don't worry about it."
"Okay, thank you." The smell of pine on his clothes was nice. "And, what about for the day? I'll be observing you in the forge?"
"Yes, I'd rather you stay close by. And, I want to get started today." He looked out the window. "Even if May convinces him to help us by tomorrow and he's here, I still want to get to work. Until I know for certain that he'll make you new limbs, I can't rely on him." Keiran stood up. "But for now, let's get you changed." She nodded, and she did hope that this new magic user would agree to help them.
Pulling out a blue shirt and dark brown pants, he grabbed a dagger from his holster, which he must've brought up after she had fallen asleep, and cut them. Once he thought them a decent length, he walked back over to her. She nodded that she was ready, and he helped her change. Afterwards, he laid her nightclothes on the bed and folded them neatly.
"We can take a break too during the day and take care of Finn. It'll be good to have a horse for when we leave this place." His eyes looked around the room with a bit of longing. "I'll miss it, but I miss Credel more."
"Are you sure you're okay abandoning it?" She was leaning up against the wall now, and Keiran was looking out the window.
"Yes." A smile touched his lips, and a fondness came over his eyes. "I'd abandon anywhere for you, (F/n)." Her own smile touched her lips, but she did feel bad for him having to leave behind something he treasured. "And, perhaps, one day, I'll come back here and find that no one had moved into it." He met her gaze. "Just promise me that you're not going to blame yourself for this."
"I'll try," she answered, letting out a light sigh, which earned one from him.
"I guess that'll do." He pushed himself off of the windowsill. "Well, let's get to it, then. And when May comes back, I'll ask her about looking for another horse as well, especially if there ends up being four of us." Keiran lifted her up. "But if the magic user can't help us, then, I suppose that we don't need to worry about that so soon."
"When do you think that she'll be back?" She did agree that a second horse would be nice, but it was true that their need for one would be far off potentially. Hopefully, though, May would be successful in her search for the magic user.
"I'm unsure. She might be out for a while since there's more activity in the forest. Or, she might not be because of that reason. Depends on how well she can remain hidden and when it becomes too dangerous for her out there." He now headed out of the room and towards the stairs. "But, it does help that word hasn't spread about what happened in Credel. It sounds like they're keeping things hidden."
"Well, they won't be able to forever. Once they announce the coronation of my sister, they'll need to invite the other kingdoms over if they want to maintain niceties between them." (F/n) huffed. "And with my mentor beside her, I doubt that she'll forget. She just wants the position and to be looked up to; Felin will be the one really pulling the strings. She never was one to care much for the responsibilities that went into ruling justly or ruling in general." A saddened smile touched her lips. "But, I still loved her. It was nice having a younger sibling to distract me from my duties at times. She made my life more fun."
"Do you still love her? Do you think that if you needed to defend yourself against her you'd be able to?" His questions caught her a little off guard, and he noticed quickly. "I'm sorry; that was out of line."
"No, it's fair." She sighed deeply. "And, I don't know. She betrayed me, but can I kill her if I need to?" A frown touched her lips. "I don't know. Part of me hopes that I can subdue her without killing her. I don't know what punishment I would give her, but, maybe, there'd be a way. I don't know if I can submit anyone to what I endured." A pained chuckle left her. "Perhaps, I'm weak for that."
"Kindness isn't weakness. But, you have to be aware of those who might take advantage of it. However as a ruler, you have to take into consideration what your people want, and if you disagree with them, you need to convince them of your side." She nodded. Yes, she would need to. Some of them would want blood; she knew they would. So, she was thankful that she had time to think of what she would do if they were successful in taking back Credel from Kendra and Felin.
He reached the bottom of the steps. "Well, I'm sure that May will hear about it when it's announced. When she gets back, she'll update us on what's going on out in the world." She nodded again. It'd be interesting to learn of what was going on in Credel even if it was general details. Part of her wished that she could be a fly on the wall, but they'd have to rely on rumors until they were traveling again.
Both of them were in thought now, and an accepted quiet fell over them. What would they learn once May was back? And, what had become of their home in their absence? What would they need to do and go through to get their home back? The future was unknown, but they had decided with May to seek it out and face what lay ahead. It was certain, however, that they'd try their hardest to get back home.
