Chapter 32

The first step in the museum tour is a miniature model of a ruin. The plaque read, "Lost City". Nadia stared in awe as she picked out the many columns and ridges in the model. It was like they had recreated the city itself 1:1.

"Let's start here first. This area will help familiarize you with what we've been calling the Lost City, and may have something to do with the tablet." Benjamin taps the glass protecting the model slightly. "Prior to the discovery of the Lost City, the oldest records of mankind were those archived at Heiwa Pagoda. However, the discovery of the Lost City proved that there was civilization that predated these records by thousands of years. This here is a visual concept of what part of the ancient city may have looked like based on the few artifacts that remain of their architecture."

"I have a question," Nadia's dad speaks up. Benjamin allows him to talk. "So, you've discovered bits and pieces of this ancient civilization already?"

"That's correct," Benjamin nods. "Somewhere out in the ocean, there must be more complete remains of the Lost City. However, it's been quite difficult to search some areas of the sea surrounding Atlanthian. That is because of the rough terrain. There are an unnatural number of trenches and conduits that branch out great distances in all directions."

It's Nadia's mother's turn to speak. "So you think parts of the Lost City could've been swallowed up by these channels?"

"Yes, that's my current ongoing theory," Benjamin answers. "I've tested out other hypotheses, but none of those add up. Where else could an entire city have gone?"

"But then..." Jake quips, alerting Benjamin to face him. "How did the city end up in the ocean in the first place?"

"There is currently insufficient evidence. However, this is a mystery that I hope to solve in due time."

Mabel raises her hand. "You said earlier that this city might be related to the stone tablet. Can I ask how?"

Benjamin looks pleased. "I'm glad you asked. Well, we have just the answer. If you follow me over here, I'll show you our main attraction, which will answer your question."

He leads them all to a part of the museum, the display shocking the trainers. Nadia blinks in recognition. "This is...!"

In front of them is a large-scale model of the exact same stone tablet that had broken up. She wasn't sure if the symbols were the same, but the shape definitely was. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see Lucas and Angel gawking in surprise.

"That's huge! Is that what we're looking for?" Lucas exclaims.

"Not to that scale, but yes. To find the pieces of this stone tablet is the mission I have entrusted onto Nadia." Nadia's dad walks to Benjamin's side and stretches his arm towards the display. "This is in fact part of what I wanted all of you to see. This tablet is very similar, in fact, to the one I have tasked Nadia with finding. For starters, the language is the same as that which was written on Mitis Town's before it disappeared. The stone material is also very similar in nature. The only difference is that it does not possess any corruptive energy."

"Regardless, it's massive..." Jake marvels.

"Right? I was quite shocked when I found that this was on display here. If only I knew about it sooner, then maybe there's a link between this tablet and the one in Mitis Town's."

Benjamin nods. "This discovery was only a few months old, though. It was found in an ocean trench not far from the dome. It was surrounded by a series of murals that allegedly illustrated the ancient history of our planet and the Lost City. They were preserved remarkably well, I must say."

"What was written on those murals?" Zinx asks. Benjamin grins at the question.

"You see, the language written on those murals is long dead. However, with what written transcripts and records of this language we had available, we were able to discern its meaning to the best of our ability. Here," He presses a button nearby, and a projector screen descended in front of them. "Let's take a journey through ancient history with me, as we look upon these murals."

...

The first mural depicts a Great Light which descends upon a desolate rock in space.

The desolate rock represents our planet, before any life existed thereon.

"Really? Interesting..." Nadia mutters.

The Great Light represents a vessel carrying the original Soul Crystal, known as the Soul Heart.

"The Soul Heart..." Jake whispers.

Some theories suggest that the Great Light is nothing more than a large meteor which crashed into the earth.

However, the tablet refers to the vessel carrying the Soul Heart as Levvenos, and suggests it may have actually been an ancient creature from another world.

"Another world...?" Zinx questions.

The Soul Heart was embedded into the earth, and a network of Soul Crystals grew throughout the entire planet.

This gave Levvenos the power to fill the globe with life, crafting a habitable sphere to be home for its other creations.

Both Humans and Loomians were then created to live in harmony and to build a perfect Utopia.

"Whoa..." Lucy watched on in awe. Musa also seemed pretty invested.

Under the direction of Levvenos, Humans learned to harness the power of the Soul Crystal network to build Levvenos' kingdom.

Together, they forged a thriving kingdom of wondrous architecture and technology.

"That's so cool!" Lucas shouts, but shuts his mouth when everyone stares at him.

Unfortunately, their prosperity did not last forever.

One day, a foul, dreadful creature appeared on the earth, and threatened all life thereon.

It is described as a being of two parts-infectious corruption, and insatiable hunger.

This earned it the name Akkuwari, meaning "The End of Humanity".

"...!" Mabel gasps. Starla felt her trembling and woke up. It climbed down to her shoulder and gave her comfort.

Akkuwari fed on the planet's Soul Crystal veins, absorbing its power.

Akkuwari used this power to infect anything in its wake with a disease that corrupted the mind, turning Humans and Loomians violent against one another.

Feasting on Soul Crystals would leave the area as lifeless and desolate as it had been before Levvenos appeared.

"No way..." Angel's hands balled up into fists. She doesn't understand why she felt hostile towards the depictions in the video, but nonetheless had the reaction anyway.

Eventually, all that remained of the Soul Crystals was the Soul Heart, which Levvenos personally protected.

This led to a fight of titanic proportions.

In the end, Levvenos knew it could not conquer Akkuwari.

Using the power of the Soul Heart, Levvenos unleashed an attack that left both it and Akkuwari mortally wounded.

The few humans which survived this calamity found the incapacitated remains of Levvenos and Akkuwari.

They managed to transplant Akkuwari's power into a depleted Soul Crystal, and moved it somewhere far away.

Levvenos burrowed deep within the earth, where it is said it will slumber for eternity, wounded by its great battle.

The remaining humans rebuilt the fallen kingdom, using the Soul Heart as they were once instructed by Levvenos.

However, without guidance from Levvenos, they were left to their own devices.

This is all that is recorded upon Levvenos' Tablet and the accompanying murals.

That is the history of the Lost City.

...

As the video ended, the group was left in shock and silence. Jake was the one who eventually broke it.

"So wait," He begins, grabbing the attention of those around him, "the corrupted tablet we've been searching for...is the tablet that contains Akkuwari's power?"

"That is the same conclusion we arrived at." Nadia's dad answers for Benjamin, who was just about to open his mouth to respond. "After compiling all the given clues, I am nearly certain they are one and the same."

"This tablet's powers don't give me a good feeling..." Mabel managed to stop trembling thanks to Starla's help, but nonetheless felt uneasy. "Suddenly this mission became even more severe..."

"Do keep in mind that we have no means of verifying this information in full." Benjamin says to reassure them. "It's an ancient legend, it could be exaggerated or even made up."

"True if not for the fact that we know the tablet we're looking for has the same corruptive abilities Akkuwari did." Nadia refutes. "Unfortunate as it sounds, I think it really does contain Akkuwari's power."

Lucas nods. "That's actually kinda cool, don't you think? We're chasing after the remains of an evil, Soul Crystal devouring power. They're from the devastating clash between two alien creatures that are like...thousands of years old!"

"It's not cool, Lucas, it's really dangerous!" Lucy hits Lucas on the head, the latter yelping from the sudden pain. "Be serious!"

Jake diverts the chaos back to the topic at hand. "The story also mentioned that the ancient people of this city tried rebuilding civilization with the Soul Heart, but it stops before it says what happened. Is there any information on that?" He asks.

"Unfortunately, no. However, that has been the primary focus of my work for some time now. It seems no other records have survived since then, and the kingdom itself was somehow swallowed up by the ocean. The chronological events are still unclear." Benjamin replies.

"Thank you, Ben, for sharing all this with us." Nadia's dad bows slightly in respect.

"No problem at all. And thank you all that you've brought to the table." Benjamin waves it off. "Before you came along, it was quite easy for me to think that all of this was nothing more than a legend. You've revived my motivation to continue researching this conundrum. So, I owe you just as you feel you do me."

Nadia's dad nods. "And I am more than happy to assist you. Now we know the origin of the threat we're fighting against. Now comes the question of what caused the tablet to break apart and fly away."

"Yes, and now that we're back in contact, I will share my further discoveries in relation to these events." Benjamin agrees. Nadia's dad lights up.

"I appreciate it! We'll share what information we find as well. Which reminds me..." He puts his hand to his chin in thought. "I need to continue searching for that tablet piece. As I mentioned earlier, it's gonna take a bit more time, so I hope you guys have something to do before then."

"Yeah, we have to challenge the Battle Theatre." Nadia declares. Her father smiles back.

"That's perfect. I hope to see your performance on TV."

"Oh, shall I tag along with you? I'd love to see Nadia's battle in person." Nadia's mother asks, to which her daughter agrees.

"As long as everyone else is okay with it."

After a chorus of nods and cheers, Benjamin leaves them all to it. "If you'd like to continue exploring the museum, you are free to do so at any time." He heads off, perhaps to continue his own research.

"Good luck, Champ, and have fun!" Her dad waves as he returns to the previously mentioned spare room.

"Alright, shall we head over to the Battle Theatre?" Nadia asks.

"Yeah!"
