Looking for Trubel Playlist

While I was writing this book, I was inspired by a myriad of songs that I felt fit particular scenes or the novel as a whole. Check 'em out!

(Don't stop if you hate one song! They are all different genres and artists! Also, if you use YouTube to listen to the songs, just type in the names without quotes, parenthesis, or any other punctuation or else the versions of the songs that I like don't come up. (Ex. Instead of "Little Red Riding Hood" - The Brooke vs. Daafit type in little red riding hood the brooke vs daafit).)

Here we go!

"Monsters" - Ruelle (Acoustic Version): This song really captures the mood of the novel as a whole. It, for the most part, really reflects Trubel and Bonaparte's relationship. It shows Trubel's manipulation by Bonaparte ("I'm feeling like a villain, got a hunger inside... We are monsters"), but also her retaliation against him ("One look in my eyes and you're running cause I'm coming, going to eat you alive"). It's easy to picture Trubel's inner struggles, the danger she poses, and her actions with this piece of music.

"I Found" - Amber Run: This song makes me think about the entire beginning of the novel. I visualize Trubel alone in her room when she is by herself, thinking about Nick ("I've moved farther than I thought I could, but I miss you more than I thought I would"). In the beginning, Trubel is trying to cope with her loss and her new reality, and she has no clue what to do with herself. To some extent, she looks to Vincent for guidance which is reflected by the song. I can't help but think of Vincent and Trubel's first meeting. ("I'll use you as a focal point... I found love where it wasn't supposed to be").

"Die Trying" - MICHL: This song reminds me of Blake and Trubel's relationship as they work together behind the scenes to take down Bonaparte. They question their own actions - especially Trubel ("Are we wrong? Are we right?... We're in over our heads"). They question if they will ever be able to save Nick, Vincent, and the rest of the world. ("There's still a long, long way to go... Will we ever get to the other side before there's nothing left?... Don't know but I swear I'll die trying").

"I'd Love to Change the World" - Jetta (Matstubs Remix if it suits your fancy): I feel like both the remix and original Jetta version of this song fit the scene where Trubel kills Bonaparte's friends.

"Confident" - Demi Lovato: This song reminds me of the scene where Trubel is first training with Nick. She is doing very well at the fights and Nick is trying his best to keep up. Trubel's power gives her a sense of confidence ("This is my game, and you better come to play"). This song also reveal's Trubel's over-the-top nature, like when she beat up Jack ("I make my own choice... You can't make me behave").

"I'll Be Good" - Jaymes Young: Trubel starts to realize how much she's changed when Nick comes to the compound. She tries to ignore her feelings but secretly struggles until she admits to Vincent that she is still Trubel as opposed to the cruel Theresa. When Bonaparte continues to torment her, Trubel fights, even more, to help her friends and stop Black Claw. In some ways, she feels like she needs to make up for what she's done in the past ("I'll be good for all of the time that I never could").

"Believer" - Imagine Dragons: This song reminds me of sneaky Vincent, like when he is going around manipulating Josie and Bonaparte. He puts out the vibe that he is completely sick of Black Claw ("I'm fired up and tired of the way that things have been"). Both Josie and Bonaparte try to make Vincent what they want, rather than letting him be himself. It drives him crazy ("Don't tell me what you think I can be").

"Hurts Like Hell" - Fleurie: This song makes me thing of two distinct parts of the book - the beginning when Trubel find's Nick body in his house and is tormented continually that he is gone ("I loved, and I loved, and I lost you"), and the scene when she hugs Nick after finding out he is still alive and worries that their relationship makes her weaker and puts him in danger ("I don't want them to know the secrets. I don't want them to know the way that I loved you").

"A Little Wicked" - Valerie Broussard: Trubel matches this song perfectly. Bonaparte calls her a psychopath, a possession, and honestly thinks she has the potential to be cruel like he is. Trubel starts to believe him ("A little wicked, that's what he calls me 'cause that's what I am"). This song also depicts Trubel's attitude towards Bonaparte later in the book ("One of these days a comin', I'm gonna take that boy's crown... To the king, I will bow, at least for now...No one calls you honey when you're sitting on a throne"). She wants to kill him and replace him, becoming someone that can change the world and make their own choices.

"Lost It All" - Jill Andrews: I feel like this song would be playing as Vincent and Trubel first leave the compound to find Adam Smith. It parallels to Trubel's emotions - how she's in a "world without reason," feels like she's lost everything ("Lost it all"), and was broken apart mentally and emotionally by Bonaparte ("All the king's men never put my heart together again").

"Breathe" - Fleurie: This song is the moment when Vincent is telling Trubel he loves her at Adam Smith's mansion. Vincent tries to get Trubel to admit who she is (make her "reach the light on the surface" of herself). Trubel gives in, and both she and Vincent feel like a great change is happening ("I feel the pages turning"). They both wonder when and how they will become safe ("when will we finally breathe").

"All I Want" - Emma Bale Cover: I imagine Trubel in her nice room when she first arrives at the compound. She is lying in bed, closing her eyes and reliving all of the memories she shared with Nick. She probably smiles a little bit because, for her, the memories are so real that it feels like Nick is back. It feels like she would wake up the next morning at Nick's house and prepare to work on a police case with him. Then, she opens her eyes and stares at the gray ceiling, remembering where she was. It would feel like she lost Nick again every time she reached the end of her memories of him. She missed him. ("All I want is nothing more than to hear you knocking at my door. Cause if I could see your face once more, I would die a happy girl I'm sure"). She would probably wonder why Nick had to leave her and the world he loved behind.

"Not About Angels" - Birdy: The moment Nick finds Trubel's journal and starts reading it fits this song. He's reading Trubel's words and realizes that it sounds like a goodbye from her like she knows she's losing her grip on herself. The letter renews Nick's feelings of hope and love for Trubel. To him, the note is Trubel asking him not to give up on her ("Don't give me up").

"Sirens" - Fleurie: This song describes Trubel's separation from Nick and Vincent when she has to pretend that she is loyal to Bonaparte - this is after she gets back from the assignment with Vincent and is tortured by Bonaparte's friends. Originally, Trubel sees hope in working with Vincent and saving Nick ("Out in the darkness, I saw an angel"), but everything goes wrong when Bonaparte finds out the Trubel isn't his Theresa ("Until the sky fell"). She had this great idea for a better future ("I see a future covered in roses"), but it was all destroyed when she was caught by Bonaparte ("The door closes"). Everything seems to be going bad, and Trubel is left alone to cope with it herself ("I can hear the sirens"). For this song, I always imagine Trubel beating up the punching bag after Bonaparte punishes her and the scene where she pulls the car over on the road after almost running over Vincent.

"Where's My Love" - SYML: This song portrays how Nick and Vincent feel when they think they've lost the Trubel that they've known ("Where's my Love?"). She acts like she hates them and continues doing horrible cruel things. They just want her back ("Just come home").

"Paint It Black" - Rolling Stones (Hidden Citizens Cover): This song describes the kind of person that Trubel became after Bonaparte put her in a mental institution room. That was one of the most extreme parts where Trubel really lost her identity ("I look inside myself and see my heart is black"). We don't see her during this time period in the story, but we have a feeling how bad it was based on Vincent's sadness when he explains everything to Nick. Nick also watches Trubel's DVD and sees the aftermath of her behavior change - she kills someone for Bonaparte and other equally horrible things. Later in the story, Trubel is tormented by some of the things she did ("Maybe then I'll fade away and not have to face the facts. It's not easy facing up when your whole world is black").

"I'm A Wanted Man" - Royal Deluxe: This song is basically Nick and Bonaparte's relationship theme song. I could also imagine it applying to Renard's nature.

"Little Wonders" - Rob Thomas: I imagine this song playing in the background when Nick and his friends reunite in the hospital and Trubel finds out Josh is getting married. It reminds me that, in the chaos of the book, that there are little moments of order and joy and love ("Our lives are made in these small hours...Time falls away and these small hours... still remain... Let your troubles fall behind you... We'll get by").

"Gone" - MICHL: This song reminds me of the scene where Trubel tries to hit Vincent with her car and leaves him injured in the parking lot. Trubel leaves Vincent doubting himself and his relationship with Trubel ("Thought I was someone. Thought we were something"). Vincent doesn't understand Trubel's actions ("It's always hard to understand when every feeling leaves with no reason"), and probably thinks about how he changed for her and how they were supposed to be a team. Trubel, meanwhile, would probably be frantically wiping tears away from her eyes while she drives at excessive speeds, knowing that Vincent and she are going separate ways ("You're gone").

"Radioactive" - Imagine Dragons (Alexi Blue & Ava Allan Cover): "Welcome to the new age." That about sums it up. Trubel and her friends are working together to create a new and better world, and this is a good theme song for it.

"Madness" - Ruelle: Every time Trubel glares at someone or threatens someone, I think of this song.

"Wherever I Go" - One Republic: This song captures how Vincent can't seem to let go of the girl he loved. He wants Trubel back, even when he thinks it's not possible. He is always thinking about her, and he doesn't want to give up on her ("I know I could try looking for something new, but wherever I go, I'll be looking for you"). Their love is complicated ("I feel alive when I'm close to the madness. No easy love could ever make me feel the same").

"Certain Things" - James Arthur: I think of Vincent and Trubel dancing together and spending time together their first night out of the compound. It really captures Vincent's feelings towards Trubel ("Something about you. It's like and addiction. Hit me with your best shot, honey... There's certain things that I adore. There's certain things that I ignore. But I'm certain that I'm yours").

"Broken Things" - Clarity: It's the chorus of this song that really gets me. It makes me think about how Nick feels about Trubel (May be rough around the edges... You're too tired, you can't carry all this hurt now. You're more to me than all these broken things... Can't I put you back together?").

"Monster" - Imagine Dragons (RUNAGROUND): "If I told you what I was, would you turn your back on me? And if I seemed dangerous, would you be scared?... A monster... I've turned into a monster." These lyrics reflect the moment that Trubel is trying to explain herself to Rosalee and Monroe. She wants them to know that she's a bad person, and they don't believe her. Then, Trubel accidentally hurts Hank and realizes how much of a monster she's become.

"Meet Me on the Battlefield" - SVRCINA: I think of when Trubel was is solitary when I hear this song ("No time for rest. No pillow for my head... Around the shadows creep"). I think of when Vincent brought Trubel there after she was injured by Bonaparte's friends, and Vincent stays with her ("We carry on through the storm, tired soldiers in this war. Remember what we're fighting for").

"Slip" - Eliott Moss: This song reminds me of all the times Vincent and Trubel aren't allowed to see each other. They wonder who the other has become (Where's the light I used to know?"). They both lose their grip on who they are and what they want - especially Trubel ("You have to hold on or it's gonna slip... slip through your hands").

"Little Red Riding Hood" - The Brooke vs. Daafit: This is just a creepy song that reminds me of Grimm in general.

"I Can't Breathe" - Bea Miller: After staying with Bonaparte, Trubel begins to lose herself. She longs for the past and doesn't know how to escape her current situation ("My body and mind are so distant. Don't know how to escape from this prison. How can I free my mind?... My thoughts never feel like my own... Don't know how to admit that I'm broken"). When I hear this song, I imagine Trubel at the Spice Shop realizing how much Bonaparte effects her, or when she's alone in her solitary cell after meeting with Bonaparte's friends and thinking about why she's still fighting back.

"Gotta Love It" - Ruelle: This song fits so many scenes from Trubel training with Nick to Trubel killing Bonaparte's friends. Its energy reminds me so much of all of Trubel's triumphant moments.

"Trouble" - Valerie Broussard: I feel like this song would be playing while Trubel walks in the bar to pick up Charles Jones.

"We Must Be Killers" - Mikky Ekko: This song reminds me of Josie and Vincent's relationship and how Josie tries to get Vincent to embrace his dark side. ("We must be killers").

"I Walk the Line" - Halsey: This song reflects Trubel's hesitation towards relationships. She knew she liked Vincent, but she didn't know how much or if she should like him. Could he be trusted? ("I keep a close watch on this heart of mine. I keep my eyes wide open all the time... You've got a way to keep me on your side").

"Pacify Her" - Melanie Martinez: This song depicts Josie's feelings towards Trubel ("She's getting on my nerves. You don't love her").
