Chapter Twenty-Six
Trubel and Blake parked where they had parked the last time they visited the shop and walked through the front door where Monroe and Rosalee were waiting for them. A few minutes later, Hank and Wu showed up.
"So, I guess we're all here," Hank said.
"Good," Trubel began. "How is working with HW? Have you gotten to talk to anyone, yet?"
"Actually, yeah," Monroe began. "See, we called one of the phone numbers you gave us, and this guy named Sam answered. At first, he was suspicious of us and started talking to us about how he hadn't seen you or Vincent or Adam, but we explained to him what you explained to us. I think you might still need to talk to him, but anyway, we sort of came to an understanding. We haven't actually done anything yet, but we did come up with a plan."
"Okay," Trubel said, nodding and trying to absorb the influx of information that Monroe had just frantically provided. "What's the plan?"
Rosalee decided to take over. "We talked to Sam and we decided to keep our plan quiet until we start to get something done. Sam's going to ask HW agents if any of them would like to go undercover with Black Claw. He'll take the names and information of the ones that say yes, give them to us, and we'll give them to you. You can pick them up like you've been doing with other agents, take them to the compound, and that's when Nick and Vincent can recruit them."
Blake cut in. "Will the agents know that we're good guys?"
"If you tell them. Otherwise, no, they won't," Rosalee said. "They will think they've been kidnapped like the others."
"We figured it would be better that way," Monroe explained. "They won't have enough information to reveal your plan to Nick or Bonaparte, and they might put more effort into fighting in order to take down the Black Claw compound."
"That's perfect," Trubel agreed. "It will look like the story I told Bonaparte is real, Nick will keep thinking that I'm against him, and Blake and I only have to bring in willing HW agents who can probably help out Nick and Vincent."
"Do you need us to do anything?" Hank asked.
"We still need to plan the attack on the compound," Trubel said.
"We talked to Sam about that," Rosalee said. "He thinks he can help us arrange that, too."
"I believe it," Wu said. "I'm sure everyone from HW would love to take out Black Claw's compound and get their revenge."
"I want to talk to Sam," Trubel said. Rosalee handed her cell phone to Trubel. She figured that her caller ID would look better to Sam than a burner phone's.
Trubel had left the room to converse with Sam. Everyone who was left behind started looking at one another awkwardly until someone finally asked the question.
"How is she?" Hank asked. "For real?"
"As you can guess, it's still been pretty rough. Bonaparte didn't do anything to her if that's what you wanted to know," Blake explained and Rosalee and Monroe exchanged looks of relief. "But Nick is being a real pain."
"Nick?" Hank asked, confused. "What did Nick do?"
"He found out that Trubel and I came here. He's under the impression that we tricked you, and are using you to get information for Black Claw, so he's pretty pissed," Blake explained. "He actually confronted Trubel about it," Blake added.
"Oh, boy," Wu said. "That sounds like fun."
"They got in a huge fight. Trubel told me Nick threatened her," Blake said.
"He did?!" Monroe asked, surprised.
"That doesn't sound like Nick," Hank agreed.
"Yeah, Nick told her to leave you guys out of this and threw her against a wall," Blake said.
"Oh my, God," Rosalee said. "What did Trubel do?"
Blake looked uncomfortable and everyone's eyes narrowed in suspicion.
"She pulled a knife on him and threatened to kill him," Blake said and everyone began to match his level of discomfort. "But, before you say anything, she wouldn't have done that accept she saw me around the corner and knew I would stop her."
"You have to keep up the act," Monroe said, filling in the blanks.
"Yeah, and it's driving Trubel crazy. Before we left today, she told Nick that she wasn't going to hurt you guys. I think she's worried she might say too much. One minute she's trying to kill Nick, and the next she's trying to comfort him..."
"Maybe Nick won't notice. It doesn't sound like he's himself, either," Monroe said.
"I just can't wait for all of this to be over, no matter how it ends," Blake said.
Everyone was silenced by their own thoughts and the possibilities of how everything could end.
"Sam?" Trubel asked.
"Who is this?" he asked.
"Theresa Rubel," she answered. "You've been talking to my friends, Monroe and Rosalee."
"How do I know it's you?" Sam asked suspiciously. "For all I know, you stole Rosalee's phone and-"
"Tessa Reynolds," Trubel announced like it was some sort of special and secret password.
That was enough to convince Sam. "How's Smith?" he asked.
"Not great. He thinks I'm Bonaparte's evil servant now," Trubel explained.
"I'm going to need proof that you aren't, eventually," Sam said.
"Fine. All I can tell you is that Vincent and I have had to change our plan. Bonaparte figured out that I wasn't loyal to him, and it got us in trouble. I decided to start working this with my own team. Vincent and Nick Burkhardt don't know about it," Trubel said.
"Isn't that strange," Sam said mostly to himself.
"You don't believe me?" Trubel asked.
"I don't know why I should," Sam said. "I think we need to talk. In person."
"Okay. Come down to the Spice Shop. And since you don't trust me, feel free bring whoever you want with you," Trubel said.
"This could easily be a setup," Sam said.
"Then come prepared for one," Trubel said.
There was no sound from the other line for a long time. Trubel waited in silence for an answer, not really sure what she could do if Sam disagreed. Eventually, Sam made up his mind.
"I'll be there in half an hour. Who's there with you?" Sam asked.
"It's just me and Blake, Monroe and Rosalee, and their friends Hank and Wu."
"Who's Blake?" Sam asked suspiciously.
"He's the only person in the compound who know's what's really going on. We can trust him," Trubel answered earnestly.
"You better be telling me the truth," Sam said. He hung up.
Trubel sighed and went to inform the others about what had happened.
Trubel walked in on an awkward silence in the main room of the Spice Shop. Everyone looked up at her as she entered the room and greeted her with a look of exhaustion and impatience.
"Sam's coming. I'm sure he'll bring backup," Trubel said. She turned to Monroe and Rosalee. "Maybe you guys should get out of here. This could get uncomfortable."
"You might need our help," Rosalee said.
Trubel nodded and threw herself into a chair in the corner. She was tired, too. To her, it felt like everything was happening too slow and too fast all at once; it was exhausting.
Sam did eventually come, and he brought some friends with him. Without knocking, the men threw open the door to the Spice Shop, and more men rushed in from the back door. Trubel kept her seat on the chair to look less intimidating. She watched as the men busted through the doors, recognizing some of them from her night at the mansion with Vincent.
Rosalee, Monroe, Hank, Wu, and Blake all backed up against the wall, a few of them with their hands raised in surrender; the men who came in were heavily armed.
Sam emerged from the crowd. "Where's the Grimm?" he asked.
"Right here." Trubel stood up from her spot on the chair and walked over to Sam. One of the men pointed a gun to her head and told her to back up.
Trubel raised her hands in surrender and backed up. "This isn't a trap. Can we talk now, or are you just going to shoot me?" she asked impatiently.
Sam nodded at the man holding the gun on Trubel, signaling him to lower it. The man complied and Sam said, "Let's get to the point. I need to know for certain that you aren't really working for Bonaparte."
"This isn't proof enough?" Trubel asked.
"No, it isn't. I'm still not sure I trust you. And if you don't start changing my mind, we are taking you back with us."
"What?" Blake asked.
"That wasn't part of the deal," Trubel said, worried.
"It's part of my deal," Sam said.
"Sam, you've already spoken with us," Monroe said. "We set up a plan, and now Trubel's here. Everything we said was going to happen did happen. She's here to help and she's telling you the truth. We can attest to that."
Sam still looked skeptical.
"I don't buy it," a man spoke from behind Sam, walking towards the center of the group. It was Alex. He woged into a Fuchsbau and then back into a human.
"I have an idea," Rosalee said. She made Monroe nervous as she stepped out from behind him to get closer to Sam.
The man who had held his gun to Trubel looked like he was about to pull one on Rosalee. Trubel got in his way. "Don't even think about it," she warned. Even Sam shot the man a dirty look.
Rosalee continued. "I have many remedies, poisons, and recipe books here," she began. "One recipe, in particular, might be pretty useful to us if you're interested."
Alex was interested. "Continue," he said.
"A truth serum. I have all of the ingredients, I have the recipe, and you can watch me make it. I've done it before and I know it works."
"Bonaparte shouldn't be expecting us back right away," Blake offered.
"I'll try anything," Trubel said.
"Make it," Sam agreed.
They all watched as Monroe and Rosalee mixed the truth serum.
Trubel told Hank and Wu that they could go home. They didn't need to be there and it would make Sam and his group less nervous. Hank and Wu left reluctantly right as Monroe and Rosalee finished their concoction.
"This way," Rosalee said as she led the way to the bed in the back room. Trubel took a seat and drank the mixture quickly. Just like the last time, it only took a few minutes for the serum to take effect.
Trubel started to feel dizzy and exhausted all at once, but she tried her best to stay focused. She didn't want to let her guard down while Sam and his armed agents were with her friends.
"Ask me anything," she said.
Sam didn't waste any time. "Is Adam safe?"
"I think so. He's as safe as he can be," Trubel answered.
"Are you working for Bonaparte?" Sam asked.
"Kind of. He thinks I'm working for him. But I'm loyal to Nick, and Smith, and Vincent." Trubel looked around herself, trying to get her eyes to focus. The serum was powerful stuff. "I'm telling the truth. I'm loyal to all of you. The plan that Monroe and Rosalee figured out with you is a good idea. I want Bonaparte dead. I want Black Claw destroyed," she tried to emphasize, sounding as sincere as she possibly could in her impaired state.
"You are committed to us?" Sam questioned.
"Yes," Trubel said. "I need your help." Trubel shook her head in an attempt to concentrate and keep herself awake. "Just know that my friends and I are telling you the truth," she said earnestly. "I'm loyal to you and your team."
"Fair enough," Sam said. He stood up from his kneeling position in front of Trubel's bed. "Let's go," he said to his men, signaling for them to leave as quickly as they had come. Within a few seconds, Sam was the only one left of HW in the Spice Shop.
"You're leaving already?" Blake asked.
"I have everything I need for now. We'll speak soon," he said.
"So you're going to help us?" Monroe clarified.
A smile played on Sam's lips. "Yes. We are going to help you get rid of Black Claw for good."
Sam quickly left the shop.
"Well, that was a success... I think," Blake said.
"Monroe, could you call Hank and Wu and tell them what happened?" Rosalee asked. "I'm going to take care of Trubel."
"Of course," Monroe said, leaving the room.
"I'm okay," Trubel said.
"Just rest for a little while, alright?" Rosalee asked gently.
"Fine," Trubel said, irritated and slurring her words. "I hate this truth serum stuff."
"Ain't that the truth," Blake said, grinning.
"You're an idiot," Trubel said, lacking any ability to keep from blurting out what she was thinking.
The time came where Trubel and Blake had to return to the compound again.
They said their goodbyes and walked towards their car that was parked in the lot.
Before they got in, Trubel said, "What are we going to tell Bonaparte?"
"He's going to want proof that we're making progress," Blake said.
"That's what I was thinking," Trubel said. "Next time we see Sam, hopefully, we can have a real conversation. With any luck, he will have someone that we can take in, or give us some information to give to Bonaparte that's only true enough to be believable."
On the way home, Trubel bought another burner phone. She planned on telling Bonaparte about that one. She would use it to set up meetings with Monroe and Rosalee. The other phone she would keep a secret from Bonaparte. She would keep it hidden and use it to have private conversations with Monroe, Rosalee, but also Sam and Alex.
"What is this?" Bonaparte asked.
"It's a phone that I bought on our last trip," Trubel said. "I'm going to use it to contact Monroe and Rosalee and set up meetings. Also, if something happens, they can contact me."
"Good," Bonaparte said. "When will you meet with them again?"
"I'm thinking Blake and I can go out in another week, but I have to check with Rosalee to see if she'll have information for me by then," Trubel explained.
"And she didn't have any information last time?" Bonaparte asked suspiciously.
"Apparently, HW is just as cautious as it used to be," Trubel said.
"I understand," Bonaparte began, "But I want results, so get me some or change your approach," Bonaparte demanded. He knew that Trubel didn't need Monroe or Rosalee to bring in agents from HW because she was good at it. Of course, working with Monroe could allow her to learn some very valuable information, so Bonaparte would give her more time.
