Chapter Ten: Together
Nick heard the knocking and turned around to see who it was. It was Bonaparte.
"Burkhardt, you are a difficult man to track down. How are you?" Bonaparte asked civilly.
"I've been better," he answered coldly.
"Really? I would have thought you would be excited to see your sweet, dear Theresa again."
"Where is she?" Nick demanded.
"Relax. She should be here any minute. We'll catch up later." Bonaparte started to walk out but turned around right before walking out the door. "Don't do anything stupid while I'm gone," he said and disappeared.
"Hey, Vincent," Theresa greeted indifferently.
The past year and a half had been devoid of happiness for Theresa. She enjoyed beating people up, and she was best friends with Bonaparte now, not to mention that she could do whatever she wanted, but something was missing. She liked the power and was having fun, but happy was still not how she would describe herself. Most people would call her evil, psychotic, or, less extreme, a total grump. She would always glare at people, threaten others, and if anyone did anything to piss her off, they would pay for it - sometimes with their lives. Vincent was worried for her because she wasn't her anymore.
She had become all business and lived for Bonaparte to give her the order to kill someone.
"Blake said I was supposed to come down here. What is this all about?" she didn't speak with interest or emotion, she was just collecting facts.
Vincent looked at Theresa, the stranger, standing in front of him. "See for yourself." Vincent knocked on the door for her because he knew Theresa wouldn't do it.
"Okay, thank you." Renard hung up the phone. He turned to Adalind who was looking at him expectantly.
"Burkhardt found Theresa. He's in the compound with her now," he said.
This was the first time that Adalind heard anything about Nick or Trubel since Renard took her phone.
"No..." she said, heartbroken.
"It's time to let him go," Renard told her. He left to go to the compound.
Nick heard another knock. It was the same as the one before it, but the person waiting behind the door wasn't.
Theresa walked in and saw a man with his back towards her.
Nick turned around and saw the girl he had missed so much. She saw a man that was supposed to be dead a long time ago. She didn't think it was real.
She turned around and walked back outside.
"Wait!" Nick yelled, but she was already gone.
"What the hell is going on here?" Theresa asked Vincent angrily.
"We found Nick," Vincent said.
"No, you didn't," she said menacingly.
"Theresa, you saw him, he was right there in-" Vincent began.
"No, it's not," she said, shaking her head. She couldn't let herself believe it.
"Yes, it is," Vincent said.
"It can't be! Nick is dead!" she shouted in his face.
"I think you should talk to him," Vincent suggested.
"Damn right," she growled like a total grump.
She walked back in.
"Who the hell are you?" she demanded.
"What?" Nick was so confused. "It's me," he said.
"Me, who?" she asked, taking a menacing step forward.
This is not at all how Nick thought this would go.
"Nick," he said.
"The hell it is. Nick is dead. You have five seconds to tell me who you really are before I kill you," she snarled.
"I'm not dead. It's me," Nick said.
"One thousand one," she started counting bitterly.
"Please listen to me. I am alive. I can tell you how it happened," Nick pleaded.
"One thousand two," she continued.
"Trubel, would you stop that?! I am alive because of you!" he yelled. "I had the freaking stick in my pocket. You saved my life when you gave me CPR. "
No one could have known about, or even understood, what the man in front of her just said, except for Nick.
It was him. It was really him!
Theresa was in shock. She couldn't move or talk. She stared at Nick with wide eyes.
"It's me!" Nick yelled, worked up. He pulled the Black Knight out of his pocket and held it out in front of him. His tone softened. "Trubel, please. It's me."
Theresa started walking towards him quickly. He was worried that he hadn't convinced her and she was about to try to kill him. But, he kept his hand out holding the Black Knight. Maybe she just wanted to examine it to fact-check him.
She didn't care about the Black Knight. It was Nick, it was her Nick, standing in front of her.
She wanted to run over and hug him but remembered who she was now. She stopped.
"Let me see it," she said. Nick threw her the Black Knight and she looked it over and threw it back.
She was about to explode. She wanted to scream in joy, and hug Nick, and cry, and apologize and tell him that she missed him, but a part of her couldn't let her do that.
Bonaparte walked in just then. "How's the reunion?"
Bonaparte walked over to Theresa's side and put his arm on her shoulder. "It's just about over. Do you want me to take Burkhardt to his cell?" she asked.
"Yes, I can chat with him later," Bonaparte smiled as he watched the color drain from Nick's face. He was putting it together. Trubel worked for Bonaparte. "Take him to the nice room you had. The one you stayed in when Vincent had his Mr. Nice Guy plan."
"I think that solitary confinement would be better," Theresa said emotionlessly.
"That's cold," Bonaparte said, jokingly. "Why don't you just give him a tour up there, and then bring him back to the nice room. It might give him a reason to behave himself."
"Yes, sir," Theresa said sounding somewhat disappointed.
She turned and walked out of the room while yelling, "Nick! Come on!" over her shoulder. "Vincent, I want you to come with me," she whispered.
Nick was even more confused than he was before. He shot a worried look at Vincent who was nodding with understanding.
Theresa led the two of them up to solitary. She flicked the lights on inside one of the cells (the switch to do that was on the outside by the door).
She grabbed the back of Nick's shirt and dragged him into the illuminated cell. "Get the door for me, would ya?" she asked and Vincent shut the door behind them and guarded the hallway.
Trubel stood, looking at Nick as they were trapped there together. Nick was standing there, trying to wrap his mind around what could be going on in Trubel's head.
"This is a room without security cameras. There are others, but it would be hard to explain why I would take you there..." she began. "No one can see us... I told Bonaparte that you destroyed the Grimm ancestry book..." she trailed off and looked down at the ground while her eyes filled with water.
Nick understood. She was acting like a jerk because she couldn't let Bonaparte know that she was still loyal to him in some way. Even if it was a small way in the back of her consciousness.
She stood there and a tear rolled down her cheek silently.
Nick pulled her into a tight hug, and she hugged him back. Hard. It kind of hurt, actually.
"Oh my God, Nick," she sobbed into his chest. She looked up at him with eyes full of happy tears. "I always do this with you," she said and they both laughed.
More tears streamed down her face, and some started streaming down Nick's.
"Trubel, I... I should have told you sooner..." Nick began.
"I love you, too," she said.
"Yeah, I guess we kind of had an unspoken understanding," Nick replied, smiling.
They were family. They had never told each other they loved each other before - they weren't those kind of people - but they stopped caring that they weren't those kind of people when they were hidden from the world.
Trubel squeezed Nick tighter, "I missed you so much!" she sobbed.
"I was terrified that I wouldn't find you," Nick admitted.
And that was when Theresa started doubting herself. What was she doing? She couldn't do this.
They separated. "As great as it is to see you, I really wish that you weren't here right now," she said. "Bonaparte is going to destroy you, and I don't think I can get you out of here."
"He didn't destroy you," Nick said.
Theresa looked guilty and ashamed of herself. "You don't know what you're talking about. What you saw earlier wasn't an act," she said. "Things are different now."
Nick was watching her revert back into whoever she was before he got there. She was different, but the moment that they shared a minute ago was proof that Trubel was still in there somewhere.
She wiped away any evidence of emotion and knocked on the door. Vincent opened it.
"Just do whatever Bonaparte says," she warned. "I learned that lesson a while ago. It's not worth it to piss him off."
Did Trubel really just tell him to follow someone's orders? She never listened to anyone...
Nick walked out and shot a look at Vincent who had heard the conversation. He had the hints of a peaceful smile on his face.
Theresa said, "I have to go talk to Bonaparte," and walked away.
Vincent showed Nick to his new room. They walked in and started talking to each other in hushed tones.
"So, she was here?" Nick asked.
"At the very, very beginning. It didn't last long," Vincent said sadly.
"Then what?" Nick asked.
"You really don't want to know," Vincent said. "Just remind yourself that Theresa is a new person for a reason. She really did try to fight it as long as she could, but she lost."
"What do you mean she lost? I just talked to her-"
"You'll see," Vincent said. "It's not pretty."
It was weird. Trubel had seemed okay to Nick. He did think that Trubel was acting pretty weird towards the end, though...
"How did the tour go?" Bonaparte asked.
"I think Nick knows everything he needs to know, now," she answered.
"Good. But how are you feeling?" he asked.
"I don't know what you mean," she said callously.
"You aren't happy to be reunited with your Grimm?" Bonaparte clarified.
"I think that he could be good for us," Theresa said.
There was a side of her that wanted to feel, and love, and be happy, but there was also a side of her that shut it down and kept her under control. It was safer for Nick that way, anyway.
"Good girl," he told her.
"Another Grimm? Are you kidding me?!" Josie yelled in irritation. "Why does Bonaparte always put you in charge of taking care of the Grimms?" she questioned, clearly annoyed.
"I can usually get them to trust me," he said. "It helped us break Theresa and now it's time to try it on Nick."
"No, no, no, no! No more Grimm stuff! I don't want you dealing with it!" Josie commanded.
"Then, who will? You?" Vincent asked.
"I don't know..." she said, thinking. "What if we had Theresa train Nick?"
"That's a great idea!" Vincent said, trying to act like he wasn't thinking of that same plan. "She's knowledgeable, she knows what has to be done, and she's a Grimm, too!"
"I'll go tell Bonaparte," Josie said and walked away.
She did tell Bonaparte, and he loved the idea. Theresa was then assigned to train the new Grimm.
That was Vincent's entire plan. He knew that if he or Theresa suggested the idea, it would make Bonaparte suspicious and could put Nick in danger. Vincent had to pull a few strings, play a few games, but everything fell into place when he prodded Josie to come up with Theresa's training of Nick on her own. It worked perfectly.
Renard had arrived at the compound. Bonaparte and he were finally going to talk to Nick.
Theresa and Nick waited for them in the interrogation room with the table.
"What's going to happen?" Nick asked.
"I'm not sure. Just remember what I told you."
Just do whatever Bonaparte says... It's not worth it to piss him off.
That was going to be hard.
Bonaparte and Renard walked in. After everything that had happened, Nick wanted so badly to kill Bonaparte right then and there. He clenched his fists and was grinding his teeth.
"Don't do that," Theresa warned him quietly. He was going to need to calm down and look less like he wanted to kill someone.
"Burkhardt, it is time for our greatly anticipated conversation," Bonaparte said. All four of them were sitting down at the table now.
"Then get on with it," Nick said, and Theresa kicked his leg under the table with more force than was necessary.
"Watch yourself, Burkhardt," Renard warned. "You don't have anyone here who's going to help you."
Nick was thinking about Trubel, and Renard knew it. "Believe me, Nick, she's not going to protect you if she ever has to pick a side. Right, Theresa?"
"Right," she answered without hesitation. Nick felt a chill run down his spine.
"Why don't you wait outside, my dear," Bonaparte suggested.
"Yes, sir." She got up without looking at Nick and left.
"She is incredible, isn't she? All the time that I took to make her obedient, and strong, and loyal, was well worth it," Bonaparte said approvingly.
"What the hell did you do to her?" Nick asked.
"We want to talk about you, Burkhardt," Bonaparte said, "And what you know. For example, the Grimm ancestry book. Don't think I've forgotten about it. Now, where is it?" Bonaparte wanted it even more, now knowing that he could control Grimms. He would use them to win the war against Hadrian's Wall. They were currently at a draw and Grimms would give him the edge he needed.
"It's gone. I destroyed it," Nick said. "Anything was better than giving it to you."
Bonaparte woged and glared at Nick. Nick doubled over in pain.
Theresa was watching from the window room, but had to look away. She couldn't watch Bonaparte torture Nick.
Then, she realized she shouldn't do that and turned her gaze back towards Nick.
"Tell me the truth!" Bonaparte demanded.
"I did," Nick choked out.
Bonaparte let him go. Nick was sure the ordeal would have been much more painful if Trubel hadn't told him what to say.
Bonaparte grinned. "Then, Theresa was being honest with us. You know, I almost regret what I did to her when she told me she didn't know the first time," Bonaparte was laughing. "But, then again, it was still fun, whether or not she was being honest."
Nick was shaking with rage. He wanted to act on what he was thinking.
"What do you want from us?" Nick growled through clenched teeth.
"Only from you. I already have everything I could have wanted with Theresa," Bonaparte said. "In fact, I only want another one of her, and I'm hoping you can do that for me. You Grimms have potential, it's true, but I'm hoping you don't take as long to break as Theresa did." He was laughing again.
"You want me to work for you?" Nick asked incredulously. "That's not going to happen. I'm never doing anything for you!"
Bonaparte was smiling. "That's what Theresa said, but now I own her."
"Trubel does not belong to you!" Nick yelled and stood up from his chair.
"Did you just call her 'Trouble?' Is that her nickname?" Bonaparte asked playfully. "That's cute."
Renard spoke up, "She's not Trubel anymore. She is Theresa now, and Theresa doesn't care about you."
"You're wrong," Nick said.
Theresa was in the window room begging Nick to shut up. He was going to get them both in trouble.
"Burkhardt, if you really care about her, you need to let her go," Bonaparte said. He left the room so Renard and Nick could talk.
"I should have killed you when I had the chance," Nick said.
"But you didn't and Trubel didn't kill me either, so here we are. I'm going to be honest with you, Nick. Unless you join us, this isn't going to go well for you." Renard left, too.
Theresa walked in to get Nick from the interrogation room.
She was mad. "What was that?!"
"You were listening?" Nick asked and Theresa pointed to the mirror. "Oh."
"Nick, do you have any idea what they would do to you if you really made them mad?! They could kill you or even worse!" she yelled.
Even worse? What would be worse than death? Nick wondered. It unsettled him that Trubel knew the answer.
"I'm sorry!" Nick said.
"You are an idiot!" she responded angrily.
"Well, you heard what they said about you. How was I supposed to listen to that?" he asked.
"The same way I listen to it. They say it all the time, and it's all true, so get over yourself!"
It was all true?
Nick, she's not going to protect you if she ever has to pick a side.
Theresa decided that it was never too early to start training, so they walked over to the room where Theresa always practiced.
Theresa was still pretty angry when they got to the training room, and Nick felt bad about it.
But, Nick was also really starting to get concerned. He was noticing more and more how different Theresa was. He started to wonder if there was anything she wouldn't do for Bonaparte.
"Okay, Nick." She sighed. "Give me all you've got."
"You want me to hit you?" Nick asked in disbelief.
Theresa liked training, and she was glad she got to train with Nick, so her mood was improving. She smiled. "I want you to try."
"Trubel, no," Nick said sternly. "I can't do that."
"Don't be such a baby. Neither one of us can get better at fighting if we just stand here and talk about it," she said.
Nick shook his head. "I'm not hitting you," he said decisively.
"Fine," Theresa said and punched him in the stomach.
Nick grabbed his chest and groaned. He definitely had the wind knocked out of him.
"Seriously, Nick. Hit me. Don't make me punch you in the face," she threatened.
Nick was shocked. What was she doing?!
Theresa pulled her arm back and aimed to hit him in the face. It wasn't going to be full strength, but she was still holding on to the hope that Nick would get out of her way.
She tried to punch him, but Nick grabbed her hand and used her momentum to throw her across the room.
He just reacted. He didn't mean to throw her. He was worried he accidentally hurt her.
Theresa went flying. She hit the ground and rolled a little bit, and lay there.
Crap! Nick ran over to her and kneeled down near her to make sure she was okay. "Trubel?" he asked.
Her eyes shot open. She grabbed Nick and tackled him. They rolled together on the ground, and when they stopped, Trubel was on top of him. "Lesson one: Show no mercy!" she said grinning at him. She got off of him and held out her hand to help him up. He didn't take it. He just grinned back and said, "It's on!"
They had finally gotten into sync and Nick stopped worrying that she was going to get hurt when he saw how good she was; in fact, she had to worry about not hurting him. She even taught him a few moves. They playfully punched and blocked, kicked and ducked, and were actually having a lot of fun together. Every now and then, they would hurt the other on accident, but it only increased their competitiveness.
Then something happened that worried Nick.
Theresa threw him, and he stayed on the ground. He was out of breath. "You got me."
"Again," she said proudly.
"I think I'm getting too old for this," Nick said, catching his breath.
Suddenly, someone walked in. It was someone neither one of them had met before.
"I'm Jack. Are you Theresa Rubel?" the man asked. He was about Theresa's age.
"Yeah, what do you want?" Theresa asked bluntly.
Nick started getting up off the floor, but the man didn't seem to notice him.
"Bonaparte sent me down here. I'm new and he said that you had an important lesson to teach me."
Theresa exchanged a glance with Nick. "That's weird. He didn't say anything about that to me."
"He just told me to tell you that you would find out what he meant...?" suggested the man. He looked Theresa up and down. "No one told me that you were so damn gorgeous, baby. Seriously, let's forget training and get out of here." Theresa realized the lesson that needed to be taught to the new guy.
Nick was standing in the corner feeling very protective.
"I would love that," Theresa said, turning on the charm that Nick didn't know she had. She had spent too much time around people who liked to play games. "But I'm a bit busy... Do you really think I'm pretty?" she asked.
"You're a ten, for sure," he said.
"Trubel!" Nick objected.
The man looked up and then looked at Theresa. "Trouble? Is that what they call you? How'd you get that name?"
Theresa got really close to his face and whispered, "Do you want me to show you?" seductively.
Nick was about to explode.
"Hell, yeah, baby."
She smiled at him and laughed. The man thought it was cute...
Until she kneed him in the groin and dragged him across the room by his hair. She slammed his face into the wall and threw him down on the ground while he was still dizzy.
He looked up at her, and she could tell his nose was broken. He woged into a Hundjager.
"I'll kill you for that!" he yelled.
Theresa kicked him in the stomach, and he woged back to human form.
"I'd like to see you try," she challenged.
The man quickly got to his feet and wiped the blood coming from his nose off his face. Theresa took a step towards him and he started to back away. "Bonaparte's going to kill you!" he said. "You were supposed to be teaching me a lesson."
"I did teach you a lesson," she said taking another step towards him. "I taught you some damn respect. Now, get the hell out!" she snarled.
He backed away and ran out of the door.
Nick was horrified. The guy was a jerk, but she really went to town on him - more than was necessary.
"I don't think you needed to do that," Nick said.
Theresa smiled - which continued to scare Nick. "Bonaparte sent him to me for a reason."
