ONE. smells like teen spirit

THE HALLWAYS of Seaford High School always had a bad odor. It reeked of snot-nosed teens and competitive know-it-alls.

Layla Beasley always knew what that smelt like. It'd been following her since she moved to Seaford in middle school.

And Layla Beasley was quite a sight for sore eyes. In other words, she was drop dead, model status, gorgeous.

She wasn't one of those mean girls either. She honestly kept to herself and never bothered a soul.

She was the popular girl in high school and everyone who glanced her way could tell.

But don't tempt her. She'll stand her ground no matter what it was about. She had all eyes on her and she never really gave anyone else the time of day.

You'd be lucky if she actually spoke to you outside the school setting.

No matter how you saw it. Layla Beasley was the girl The Bee Gees' were talking about. She was so much more than a woman. She was Layla Beasley.

And when she walked into the cafeteria that day, she had seen the new kid, Jack Brewer take on 4 other kids on his own.

Once Jack had kicked three falafel's into a kids face. He left quicker than the Flash.

Layla smirked and left the cafeteria. It took a lot to get Layla's attention and Jack was able to do that with minutes.

A personal record he didn't know he held.

THE NEXT day Layla found herself heading towards Falafel Phil's. It was... a decent, sort of, restaurant that everyone hung out.

And though Kim Crawford had just walked in moments ago. The attention was now drawn towards Layla.

And once the boys caught that sight that the Layla Beasley had even glanced at Jack's way, it made him one of the most popular boy in their small friend group.

"Do you realize how lucky you are?" Jerry Martinez asked once he saw Jack leaving the restaurant with Kim in tow.

"What are you talking about?"

Milton Krupnick pushed Jerry to the side, "How could you miss the look Layla Beasley gave you?"

Jack looked back inside the restaurant through the glass windows and saw Layla smiling at the person who handed her the food before leaving the restaurant completely.

"A look?" Jack questioned.

"She doesn't just look at anyone, Jack." Eddie Jones explained, "She's interested in you. She's one of the most popular people at Seaford... maybe the most popular, most perfect person in the entire state."

"Don't you think that's an exaggeration?" Kim asked.

The trio of boy began going back and forth with Kim as Jack drew his attention towards Layla.

Was she really that special? He thought. What was so good it even perfect about Layla Beasley?

She was just a girl that people wanted to be or be with. At least, in Jack's eyes that how he currently saw her.

Just another girl in this new place he called home.

BUT FORGET home. Jack was lied to and ridiculed in front of his friends and his new (and quickly old) Sensei.

Rudy Gillespie was the owner and Sensei of the Bobby Wasabi Dojo. And Jack had wrecked and giant whole in the side of the dojo when he was skateboarding away from the cops.

In turn, he was "going to be sent to juvie". And that was a huge no go for the boy. So instead he took Rudy's offer in joining the dojo and winning two belts for them in order not to go juvie.

But here's where the lie comes into play.

Rudy had only told Jack he'd be sent to juvie, when, in fact, he'd only would've been banned from the mall for two weeks.

And how did this truth come out?

It was because Kim had taken Jack to the Black Dragon's Dojo in order to have him join their team instead.

Jack respectfully said no and was gifted a special bo staff which he took without question.

Jack had taken the staff back to his dojo and Rudy was livid.

Now we're here: Jack quit the dojo.

He stormed out of the place and bumped shoulders with Layla who was holding a smoothie in hand.

She watched as her drink hit the floor and she looked down at it with a sigh.

Jack turned, his facial expression had soften and he made his way over to Layla who'd been using the napkins she'd gotten and wiping the mess she didn't intentionally make.

"I'm so sorry." Jack apologized, "I can get you a new one."

Jack looked up and finally saw what others did in Layla.

Yeah, she was a good looking girl, but she had one of the prettiest smiles that he'd ever seen.

"It's okay." She chuckled, "Probably didn't need the second one anyway."

She began to stand upright and Jack slowly followed behind.

"I'm Jack."

"I know." She smiled, "You've already made a big impression on Seaford. You know, with all the karate you've been doing. I'm Layla."

He smiled, "I know. You're interested in karate?"

"Not really. Not anymore anyway." Layla answered, "I dabble in everything you can say."

"I can see why people are obsessed with you."

Layla raised in eyebrows and Jack began stumbling over his words.

"You know, that's what my friend... kind of, Jerry said."

Layla smiled, "Jerry thinks he's a ladies man. It's nothing new."

Jack nodded. Layla was different than what people had described her as... at least what Jerry had described her as. She was cool, she seemed very put together.

"I've gotta go, but it was nice meeting you Jack."

Jack turned, watching Layla walk off and waved her goodbye.

Layla had plenty of people wrapped around her finger and Jack Brewer was the newest addition to her jewelry box.

AND JACK had left an impression on Layla and Seaford in his short time being there.

He won the second belt that the Wasabi Warriors needed in order to keep the dojo and Kim had quit the Black Dragons to join the Wasabi Warriors... on her own merits of course.

After that, Jack was the talk of Seaford High.

He joined the gymnastics team and won them a trophy they hadn't won in years.

Layla appeared from the halls as Jack and his friends were departing, leaving Milton behind.

"Hey." Layla smiled.

She paused when Milton didn't respond. She turned and caught him looking her way.

"Oh!" Milton explained, "You're speaking to me?"

"You're the only kid in the hallway." She said.

Milton smiled, "Hello."

"What's that?" Layla asked, gesturing at Milton's trophy.

"Oh! It's my spelling bee trophy. The first one in 30 years."

Layla held her hand out to hold the very small trophy and Milton handed it to her with no hesitation.

"Cute." She said examining it, "Congratulations, Milton."

"You know my name?"

Layla chuckled and handed the trophy back.

"See you around, Milton."

"Huh, never noticed him before." Jack said.

"Okay, hang on." Kim said, "So you didn't notice a 600 pound custodian, but you did notice when Layla Beasley changed her part two inches to the left?"

"Okay, first it was two inches to the right. Second, maybe if that custodian had legs like Layla Beasley, I would've noticed him too."

Was Kim Crawford jealous of Layla Beasley?

Yeah... no doubt about it. Everyone was jealous of Layla Beasley and it wasn't surprising.

But Kim wouldn't admit that out loud. No one would.

Besides, Kim herself said that she didn't have a crush on Jack... no need to be jealous of her in that aspect... right?

A COUPLE of days had passed and the Wasabi Warriors found themselves having a sumo match in their dojo.

Layla had shown to the surprise to most and the night soon came around.

Jack found himself going back to the dojo. He'd forgotten his bag and needed it for some late night practice.

He walked into the dojo just as Layla was walking out from the back.

"Layla?"

She only nodded and made her way out of the dojo.

Layla Beasley was full of secrets and maybe Jack Brewer would be the first to dig them up.
