NINE. remember me
JACK WAS trying to beat this world record for most bricks broken under that age of 15. He had a limited amount of time to complete the task as someone from the world record book was on their way to check Jack out.
"Hey, Jack." Layla called, "Here." She handed him of her hair ties, "Do what you want with it. Call it whatever. I just hope you beat the record."
Jack played with the hair tie for a moment before looking up at her, "What if I want it to be friendship bracelet?"
"That's cool."
"Great, it's official." Jack smiled, "We're friends."
"You're setting me up."
"Setting you up for what?"
Layla smiled, backing away from Jack as he continued to approach the girl. At this point, Jack knew that Layla liked him. It was a surprise and he probably couldn't hide his feelings for her much longer either.
"I'm gonna let you practice some and I'll catch you out there." She smiled.
Jack only followed suit, but had slipped on some bo staffs that had been lying on the ground.
He'd hit the ground pretty hard and Layla and the others rushed to his side. He said of fairly quickly and his hand rested on his head.
"Are you okay?" Layla asked.
"Yeah. I think so. Just one question though." He paused, "Who are you people?"
Rudy was quickly to call a local doctor in and he examined Jack's injuries.
"This isn't good." The doctor said, "He's gonna die."
"What?" The group exclaimed.
"My pen light. His batteries are shot."
"Do you really have to call your pen light "he"?" Milton asked.
"Listen, Jack's gonna be fine. But we're gonna have to operate... on a need-to-know basis. So here's what you need to know." The doctor explained, "We don't have to do anymore tests. Jack only has a minor concussion. He suffered some memory loss, but he's probably gonna be fine."
"Probably?" Layla questioned.
"Maybe. I don't know. It's not like medicine's a real science." He laughed.
"Dr. McCrary, I called Jack's parents, but they're out of town." Rudy said, "Is there anything that we can do to help him?"
"There is one thing you can do to speed up his recovery. Talk about the things he's forgotten."
The doctor soon left and Jerry was quick to jump on the Jack recovery train... kind of.
"Do you remember last week when you loaned me 20 bucks?"
"No."
"He's fine."
Layla quickly and harshly hit his arm and held his hand over the spot. Smiling at the fact that Layla had finally touched him since being at the dojo.
"Jack, we're gonna help you get your memory back." Rudy said, "Is there anything you can remember about this dojo?"
Nothing. Absolutely nothing was ringing any bells in Jack's head. But with some help he could remember that he was a karate student.
With some encouragement and the group telling him that he was one of the best students in the dojo, he tried to do some karate on the practice dummy.
Which was a fail to say the least.
"Is that how I look when I do karate?" Eddie asked.
"No, Eddie." Milton said, "You're not that good."
"This is awful. It's so upsetting." Rudy said.
"I know a way to help get his memory back." Jerry spoke.
He grabbed a staff from the corner and said that he was going to smack him to jog his memory. He claimed that the idea was full proof because he'd seen it in a cartoon once.
"I'm sorry." Jack sighed, "You guys seem really nice, but I don't know who you are. Well, maybe if you told me a little bit about yourselves, I'd remember."
And one by one they went over major things about themselves, but nothing was coming to Jack's mind.
"Look, I appreciate your help. But I don't know the guy you're talking about and Ok not gonna be able to break any kind of record."
And soon an argument rose between the group and Jack disappeared. They split out to find the lost boy and Layla found him sitting at Falafel Phil's with Frank and some of the Black Dragon's throwing falafel's at him.
Layla grabbed Frank's hand, twisting it slightly and demanded that they left. Frank and his friends left quickly and Layla sat across from Jack.
She stuck her hand out with a small smile, "I'm Layla."
"Jack. Apparently." He said, shaking her hand, "Thanks, by the way."
"Don't worry about Frank." She smiled, "He's truly terrified of you."
"Really?"
Layla nodded, "Strongest kid in Seaford."
"Seems like a lot to live up to."
"It can be, but Jack knows how to handle it and eventually you'll remember everything. Hopefully."
The group, minus Rudy, soon came into the restaurant and joined them at the booth.
"Sorry I ran out, guys." He apologized, "I just needed a second."
Mitlon began telling a story which was completely false, but it didn't really matter. Kim was the first to explain that the group were heroes together and it was just Jack. But they also had their flaws and moments of weakness.
They soon left the restaurant and Rudy exclaimed that the people from the world record book were on their way and he had a full proof plan.
"I made this hand for you out of a sledgehammer." Rudy said, "Looks perfectly natural. Now, quick. Just slide it up your sleeve."
The "natural hand" was a latex glove and not natural by any means.
Rudy soon ran out in search of a back up plan.
"Is this guy always like this?" Jack asked.
"Yeah." Layla answered, "We call it "going all Rudy"."
Soon, Bobby Wasabi and Joan showed up and reassured Jack that he would be just fine. Joan declared that she'd bumped her head once and was perfectly fine. Which may have been false because she'd woken up in Mexico and married and Bobby had mentioned that he'd been kicked plenty of times as an actor and was just as fine.
Another lie, but we digress.
"Please tell me these aren't my parents."
"No, just friends." Layla reassured.
Rudy soon returned with Winston Burgess from the book of world records.
"If we could just have a little more time." Rudy begged.
"I don't have a lot of time." Mr. Burgess said, "I gotta go watch a woman not blink for 27 hours."
"I don't think I can do this, but I don't wanna let you guys down." Jack looked over at Layla and rested his hand against her shoulder, "I'm sorry, Lilly."
"Layla." She said, "But you were so close this time. Don't worry about the record. No one is going to be disappointed in you. Rudy's not. Jerry, Milton, Kim, Eddie aren't. I'm not. I just want Jack back."
Jack sighed and looked over at Layla for a beat longer when he turned towards the crowd, "You know what? I don't remember you guys or this place, but from everything you've said, we don't give up. And I don't wanna start now." He smiled, "I'm a Wabooboo warrior!"
"Wasabi warrior." Milton corrected.
"Right. It's got a better ring to it."
Jack took the stage and the group gave him a reassuring smile. He paused for a moment before breaking all the bricks with ease.
"I can't believe it. My memory's back." He cheered, "I remember you and the dojo and Milton and Rudy and Kim and Jerry." He faced Jerry once more, "You owe me 20 bucks."
"I'm Eddie." Jerry said.
"Congratulations Jack." Mr. Burgess said, "You'll now be listed as the official under-15 world record holder for brick-breaking."
The others began making their way towards Falafel Phil's, leaving Layla and Jack alone.
"Your broke a record."
Jack smiled, "Don't you have a record in the book?"
"Most compliments received in a minute." She smiled, "But it's not about me. How do you feel?"
"I feel great. Jack is back!"
"We've missed him, but I do have one question. Do you remember what happened before you hit your head?"
"No. No, I don't. Why?"
"Bummer." She sighed, "Phil's on me."
She headed towards the restaurant and Jack pulled her hair tie from his pocket and slipped it onto his wrist.
He played with it for a moment and joined the others at Phil's.
An interesting day to say the least.
