FOURTEEN. meet my... jack
NOW THAT Jack and Layla had been together it was time that Jack finally met Layla's father, Michael.
And because Jack had the "Jack factor" he believed that everything would go accordingly because "everyone loved Jack".
So, the next day, the couple met at Falafel Phil's.
Jack entered the restaurant and found Layla and her father sitting at a booth.
He fixed his shirt, ran his hand through his hair and placed a smile on his face.
"Hey, guys."
Layla looked up with a smile, "Hey. Jack, this is my dad. Dad, this is my... Jack. My Jack." She smiled as he sat down next to her.
Michael reached his hand out to shake Jack's hand and he took it willingly.
"Nice to me you. Should I call you Micheal?"
"Mr. Beasley would be fine."
"Yeah. Yes, sir. Mr. Beasley, sir." Jack sighed, "So, uh, I hear you're in the automotive supplies, huh? Well, maybe I can get a muffler for this one when she gets all yappy 'cause once she gets goin', she's like, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah."
He began to laugh and it quickly died down once he realized he was the only one laughing.
Layla awkwardly smiled and sat up in her seat, "Why don't you tell my dad the joke you told me earlier?"
"Let's hear it, Jack. I love jokes."
Jack smiled, "Where do penguins keep their money?"
"In a snowbank."
"Oh, you heard this one." He chuckled, "Up top."
Her father sighed and Jack lowered his hand.
"You know, Jack, many species of penguins are endangered. You think that's funny?"
"This isn't one of those laughing jokes. It's more of a... raise penguin awareness kind of a joke." Jack turned towards Layla, "Why don't we order?"
As Jack reached out to grab the menu, he accidentally spilled the water cup into her father's lap.
And yet, things only seemed to go downhill from there.
Layla had shown up at the dojo with her father, showing him around and talking about the game of laser tag that had just come from.
"There they are!" Jack called. He'd come from the back of the dojo sand held a wrapped gift in his hands, "My favorite father and daughter!"
"Oh, boy..."
"Mr. Beasley, I feel like we got off on the wrong foot, so I got you a little gift."
Michael smiled, "Oh, that wasn't necessary. But thanks." He opened the no, keeping his smile, "Hey, it's the tiebIbsaw at Bergdoff's. How'd you know?"
"Well, I saw you go into Bergdoff's, so I kinda followed you in."
"Layla, your boyfriend is stalking me."
Layla scoffed, "I wouldn't call that stalking... I would call it... being praised?"
"I wasn't following you with some sort of borderline unhealthy interest." Jack said.
"Okay. It's all a little too weird for me." Michael placed the tie back into the box and handed it back to Jack, "Come on, Layla, let's go."
Michael left the dojo and Layla turned towards Jack.
"You stalked him?" She questioned, "What are you doing? This isn't Jack at all."
"I don't even know what's happening. Layla, you gotta set me up on a second date with your dad."
Layla furrowed her brows, "You want a second date with my dad? After all of that?"
Jack grabbed Layla's hands, pulling her close, "More than anything."
Layla rolled her eyes, but she was able to convince her dad to take Jack on their outing for laser tagging. It was a competition that her dad really loved and they had made it to the final round.
"You made it to the final round!" Jack smiled and held a sign that said "Go, Beasley's".
Michael smiled, but with a groan as he looked over at Layla.
"Everywhere I go, he's just... there."
"He's my boyfriend, Dad. I brought him here because he wanted to support. So, please be nice. I'm gonna grab us some water."
Layla turned and had tripped over another person laser gun. She had fallen pretty hard when she trip and her ankle was throbbing.
"I think I'll be fine." She said.
Her father help her to her feet, but she quickly grabbed his shoulder and claimed that it hurt a lot worse than what she had thought.
"Oh no, honey, you can't compete like this." Micheal sighed, "I'll have to forfeit."
"Are you allowed to play with substitute?" She asked.
And like that, Jack and Michael teamed up and they won with ease.
Michael smiled over at Layla, "What do you say you, me, and your... boyfriend here go out and get some pizza?"
Michael cheered and didn't wait for an answer as he left the area and left Layla and Jack alone.
"You're the first guy to impress my dad." She smiled, "Congratulations, now let's go get food."
She stood to her feet and followed her dad out, but she paused and turned towards Jack.
"I know you faked an injury so I could look like a hero and bond with your dad. Apart of all this..." He smiled, pointing to his head, "Is this."
"You're welcome." She smiled, "It means a lot that you tried bond with my dad. I really wanted it to work out."
"And it. Now we're getting pizza and bonding some more." He smiled, "He'll be obsessed with me like the rest of this town."
And just like that the toughest part of the relationship was over. Meeting the parents was a big deal was it not?
In the movies it was and it was just as difficult in the real world, but that part was over and now the fun part of the relationship could begin.
