EIGHTEEN. everyone will be looking at you
KIM WAS finally moving back from Japan after her time at the Otai Academy.
And she brought her Grandmaster from Otai to come and visit the dojo.
"Ah! You must be Sensei Rudy." Tomo spoke, "I've come because three of the finest students I have ever seen have trained at this dojo."
"Thank you." Milton smiled.
"We do what we can." Jerry added.
"I was talking about Kim, Layla, and Jack." Tomo said, "Rudy, we are considering offering you a position as grandmaster at the Otai Academy."
"That'd mean he'd have to move to Japan." Milton said.
"Wait, Rudy's leaving us?"
"Relax." Layla smiled, "This is a big decision. Rudy loves this dojo more than anything. I'm sure he's going to take his time to make his decision."
"I'll be in the car, Tomo! Dojo's yours, Jack!" Rudy shouted.
After wrangling Rudy back inside, Tomo explained that they needed to know more about him before getting the position.
"We'll be talking to people that know you. I'll be returning tomorrow to interview your students."
"My students will give you the whole truth on Rudy Gillespie because as Sensei, I have taught them that there is nothing more important than honesty and integrity."
With that Tomo left and Rudy instantly turned towards the others.
"You guys are gonna lie like you have never lied before!"
"Rudy, shouldn't we just tell the truth?" Milton asked.
"Yeah. What, are you worried we're gonna say something embarrassing about you?" Jack questioned.
"Yes. Yes I am." Rudy answered, "Sometimes I can be..."
"A nut loaf?" Kim smiled.
"I was gonna say, slightly imperfect, but nut loaf works, too." Rudy said, "Now here's a few things that you're absolutely not allowed to talk about."
He threw out several things that had happened in the past few years that they absolutely were not allowed to talk about... the list being so long that each of them had fallen asleep as he continued on.
"You guys got a big day tomorrow of making me look good."
And one by one each of them had been interviewed by Grandmaster Tomo and practically being stalked by Rudy in the process, Tomo finally came back to the dojo to give Rudy his answer.
"My answer is no."
"Wait, why?" Kim asked.
"Because I know Rudy was spying on our interviews. He clearly has something to hide. If you cannot trust your students, I cannot trust you."
"What? I'm not gonna... But I told people and moved out of mother... my apartment."
"Uh, Grandmaster Tomo," Milton called, "you're probably gonna want to take a step this way."
"Why?"
And that was because Rudy fell over the banister.
The next day, the group sat around the dojo.
"I can't believe Grandmaster Tomo didn't give Rudy the job." Milton said.
"How's he taking it?" Jerry asked.
"He's better than expected... only a few broken equipments." Layla answered.
"Guys, we gotta do something." Jack said, "Tomo doesn't know the real Rudy."
"But we do." Jerry added.
"He's the best Sensei that we could ever hope for."
"Anyone could ever hope for."
"Tomo needs to know that." Jack said.
Soon, Rudy entered the dojo. He had just been running around the back with a baseball bat.
Layla furrowed her brows, "How'd you get outside? There's no exit back there."
"There is now. Time to go out in a skylight."
After that, the group called Tomo to Phil's to sit and talk to him more about Rudy.
"Thanks for agreeing to meet with us." Milton said.
"You said you didn't know who Rudy was, which is fair." Layla spoke, "Sometimes we don't even know him. But he's one of the greatest Sensei's that a student could ever ask for."
"Before I came to the dojo I was just a skate punk." Jack said.
"Dude, I was a troublemaker." Jerry spoke.
"You're not gonna believe this, but I—"
Tomo smiled at Milton, "You were a nerd."
"How'd you know?"
"You're still a nerd."
Jack turned in his seat to face Tomo, "We're not gonna let you leave until you hear the truth about Rudy."
After talking to Tomo, they all returned to the dojo to talk to Rudy.
"Tough! I don't need anything from you!" Rudy shouted, "Except for this pen."
"Rudy, I have had a meeting with your students and they finally told me the truth about you."
"Oh, great. So now you know that I chew on my toenails, I wear diapers to long movies, and I got banned from the petting zoo for—"
"Rudy!" Jack called, "We didn't tell him any of those things."
"Good, because none of those things are true."
"I've really misjudged you." Tomo said, "I have never seen students so loyal to their Sensei. They've truly shown me what kind of man you are, and we'd be honored to have you at Otai."
THE GROUP decide to hold a roast against Rudy before he left. They had even made him a small gift of a belt that had been made from the belts that Rudy had given them from the past.
But, when they returned to the dojo the next day, Rudy was still there.
"I decided to stay."
"Why?" Milton asked.
"Well, because you guys showed me that here... I can make a difference."
"We're glad that you've decide to stay." Layla smiled.
"We know you're gonna be able to help a lot of other kids." Milton added.
Kim smiled, "They tried to make you fly coach, didn't they?"
"It's none of your business, Kim!"
With that, Rudy was staying in Seaford. Happy endings for everyone.
Kind of.
Later that day, Layla had gotten a call from that modeling agency that she went to during the summer and they wanted her back for a couple of weeks and possibly longer in New York.
She sat with Jack outside of the dojo with her final decision not yet made.
"I'm sure everyone will love looking at you."
"Looking at me?" Layla asked with a smile, "I highly doubt that."
"Are you kidding me?" Jack questioned, "Ever since I've moved to Seaford it's been Layla Beasley 24/7. Go. Have fun."
Layla held her phone in her hands with a sigh. To go to New York and become a model would be everything, but she also had her entire life in Seaford.
"What are you thinking about?" Jack asked.
"I've grown up in Seaford. If I had a family of my own I would want them to grow up in Seaford."
"But?"
Layla looked up at him with a soft smile, "I don't think there's a but. New York was fun, but I think I would rather continue my life in Seaford and my hometown fame."
Jack gave her a small smile, kissing her on top of her head as she rested her head against his shoulder.
Who knew that karate could get a couple of teens to fall in love?
Everyone had their eyes on Layla Beasley but she only had eyes for Jack Brewer and to think... their story isn't quite over... not yet anyway.
