Felicity and David lay in wait, eying the trees for any sign of movement.
The forest was eerily quiet and dark. There was no wind so the trees were still.
This part usually got boring. At times, the zombies would take a very long time to arrive, sometimes, they never would.
David usually took this time to teach Felicity the constellations. The stars were beautiful. Out here, with no light or pollution, you could see the Milky Way. It was truly breathtaking.
A whistling noise echoed through the trees. It then repeated closer, and closer. Zombies. Felicity repeated the signal, passing it further into the forest and drew out her dagger.
She and David clambered down from their tree and lay in wait for the creatures to show their rotting faces.
A putrid smell hit their noses and a low groaning rumbled through the trees.
Felicity widened her stance, preparing to fight as the first zombie broke through the trees into their view. David raised his bow and shot an arrow that landed between the zombie's eyes. It fell to the ground, its arms and legs lying out at unnatural angles, finally dead.
David's aim was nearly perfect. He would fend off zombies as they appeared, stopping them before they got too close, while Felicity would stay back, and fight only if one got too close. It was very dangerous to be a close-range fighter, as there was a high chance of getting bitten. But Felicity didn't mind the risk.
Another pair of rotting bodies appeared from the darkness. David shot his arrows, the first piercing one of the zombie's heart and the other found it's companion's arm. The first zombie fell to the ground, but the other one kept walking, unphased by the arrow.
David shot another two arrows, but his aim and focus deteriorated the closer it got.
It was Felicity's turn.
She prepared her dagger and charged. The creature reached out its pale hand to grab her.
Felicity slashed at its wrist and the hand fell onto the leaf-strewn floor. She slashed again, making a large gash on the zombie's chest that oozed a greyish slime like liquid.
An arrow whizzed passed Felicity's head. Another zombie had approached.
Felicity stabbed at the zombie in front of her and drove her dagger further into its chest until its body finally became limp.
Felicity looked up. Four rotting corpses were strewn across the forest floor, their slime like blood was splattered over the dead leaves.
"Are you ok, Felicity?" David asked. "No bites?"
"All good," she smiled.
David let out a sigh of relief.
He could be a fussy worry-wart, always making sure Felicity was ok, but she loved him for it. They had been friends since preschool, and their relationship had evolved into that of siblings.
Another whistling bird call reached their ears. Two women broke through the trees. Their replacements.
"Hi girls," Felicity smiled.
"I see we've had some action already," one of the women smiled as she tightened her curly brown ponytail.
"You two had best get back to camp and get some rest. You look exhausted," the second girl offered, drawing a sword from her belt.
"Thanks, guys," David smiled as he and Felicity began to leave their post, "good luck!"
