Chapter 1 - Rainy Days
Mark's POV
"Rainy days are horrible." I moan to André, as we sit on the windowsill. "Yeah, especially with a crap attitude like yours." he replies, grinning. I drop my head, entwine my hands into my dreadlocks, and sigh. Without looking up, I start letting my words flow out of my mouth. "I know it's been almost a year since Jewel left but I still miss her, and rainy days don't really boost my positivity." André scoots over and sits next to me, and we both look out at the rain dripping down the window.
Outside I can see the blurred shapes of giants stomping about, having fun owning the world, but no humans. "Ever since the Neko tribe became dominant and convinced all of the other hybrids that humans were mindless toys with no personality - and should be only used for food or as a pet - the number of humans has become less and less." I tell André, but the smile isn't wiped off his face. "But there might be some lef-" he starts but I stand up and cut him off. "ANDRÉ! Just shut up! All the humans are extinct! We are the last ones!" I stalk off and sit on the edge of the sill, leaving André gasping in my wake. As I dangle my feet over the side, I hear my friend speak, his voice laced with worry. "Dude, it's okay. Even if we are the only ones left, we won't die out because Seto is here to protect us." I ignore him, but I can't ignore the feeling that I'm being watched.
I turn around and jump as I stare into the eyes of a giant teenage boy. He smiles at me cheekily, and I scowl at him. "Why are you smiling Seto?" I snap and he puts his chin on the sill, and stares at me with his large eyes. "I scared you." he says, obviously trying to cheer me up, but I don't react. I stare into his eyes, which are like reflections of the rain outside, and at his jacket. He's wearing a black hoodie that covers his dark hair, and has cat-like ears stitched on it. I hear André walk over and ask him for a lift. He nods, stands up silently, and extends his hand for André to walk onto. "Do you need a lift grouchy?" he asks me, and I accept his offer. I drag myself to his hand and walk to the middle of his palm, where I sit and place my head in my hands again
"Seto, remind me again why you're wearing that ridiculous jacket?" I ask, as Seto sits down on the couch and places us on the leathery armrest. He looks at us and smiles, but his eyes give away his true emotions. He is sad about Jewel as well and he manages to hide it, but he can't willingly change his eyes. He chuckles softly and speaks, looking at André. "I wear this because it helps me when I go out, so I seem like a hybrid and not a giant sized human." he pauses. "And cause it's stylish." he finishes. Then, he bats his eyes and shows of his hood like a girl at a fashion show. André bursts into bright peals of laughter, but I don't. Suddenly, I feel something grab my shirt and pull me high up into the air, and when I turn around I see Seto, and I frown. "What the heck man, put me down." I yell, but he stubbornly shakes his head. "Not until you smile." he replies crisply, with no hint of humour in his voice. I don't reply. He glares at me, then drops me. I fall for a microsecond before being caught in his firm, but soft grip. He lifts all his fingers except one, which hold me down to his palm. "Seto, let me go!" I say and I squirm under his grip, but his finger holds me still. "He's not going to let you go until I'm finished with you." André says.
André slowly walks down Seto's arm and up to me. He stares into my eyes with his, and he's so serious that it's almost funny. I let a small giggle out of my mouth, and André hears it. "Seto!" he calls, and the giant leans down to the two of us. André whispers into his ear, and as Seto listens, his finger loses its grip on me and I am able to slither out. "Ha! I beat you." I holler triumphantly, run past André, and jump underneath Seto's hood. I scramble around in the darkness, then stop and lower my body into his dark locks. I feel the pressure of his hands lightly pressing his head, searching for the small lump of my tiny human form. I hear André's muffled voice calling my name, and I laugh into my hands cause he will never find me.
As I relax deeper into Seto's surprisingly warm hair, thoughts rush through my mind like dragonflies, thoughts like 'How doesn't Seto feel me?' 'How long will I be here until they find me?' 'It is very warm' and 'I guess this day was kinda fun' As I drown myself in my thoughts, a picture of my best friend's serious face floats into view, and I can't stop myself. I don't know why I found it so funny, but I start howling and hooting at the sheer hilarity of seeing my best friend so serious. The muffled voices slow to a stop, but I continue to shriek out my sadness. As Seto reaches his giant hand in and curls it around me, I don't resist and I let him bring me out into the blinding light. I look at my two friends as they watch me with confused eyes, but I keep on laughing until it catches on and all three of us start cackling like madmen.
A while later, we had calmed down and sat in front of the electric heater together, Seto in a cloak and André and I in PJ's. As we snuggle closer to Seto's warmth, he ruffles my hair with his fingertip and says "You know how André said that you guys would survive because I would protect you?" "Yeah." I reply, craning my neck to watch the shadows play across his face, and see his gleaming eyes. "Well, he was right, because I will protect you and brush every rainy day out of your life." he replies, and I slowly fall into slumber.
