CHAPTER FOUR, creative writing

It was currently Saturday so the group consisted of Phoebe, Julie, Eric, and Jack decided to go ice skating. Jack, Phoebe, Eric, and Julie enter the ice rink, wearing warm winter clothes and carrying their ice skates. The ice rink is filled with people skating gracefully, laughing, and enjoying themselves.

Phoebe looks around nervously. "So, uh, who's excited to skate today?" She never ice skated before so while she was excited to try it out, she was still nervous about it.

Jack grins. "I am! Ice skating is so much fun."

Eric smirks. "Yeah, especially when you know what you're doing."

"Eric, don't be such a show-off." Julie teasingly said.

"Can't help it if I'm a natural on the ice!" Eric playfully rolled his eyes as he grinned at her. They both get on the ice after putting their ice skates on. Phoebe wasn't surprised to see Eric showing his moves and she laughed when he looked surprised after seeing Julie copying his move flawlessly. Yeah, Eric probably should've known that Julie was really good at ice skating.

Jack glances over at Phoebe with a smile, frowning when he noticed her nervous expression. "Hey, Bee." He greets, walking over to her with a soft smile. He sits down on the bench by her. "Are you okay?"

"I'm just a bit nervous." Phoebe admits, biting her lower lip while looking at the ice rink, watching people who were skilled in ice skating skate around. "I never skated before."

"Never?" Jack asks with surprise and she shakes her head in response with an embarrassed look on her face. "It's okay," He reassures her with a smile. "I can teach you. It's actually not that hard. Ice skating is easy once you get the hang of it."

Phoebe smiles a bit. "Thanks, Jackie. I don't want to make a fool of myself in front of everyone." Then she sighs heavily and glances down nervously. " I can't believe I agreed to this."

Jack smiles reassuringly. "You won't make a fool of yourself. Just take my hand and we'll skate together."

As the friends hit the ice, Jack's holds Phoebe's hand, guiding her cautiously. Eric and Julie skate close to each other, occasionally stealing glances and smiling. At one point, Eric and Julie were skating circles around Phoebe and Jack, showing off their skills which caused the other pair to roll their eyes playfully and laugh. Julie caught Eric's eye and grins, "Looks like we're the only ones who know how to skate."

"That means we got no competition." Eric smirks. "Just what I want." He comments, grinning when Julie giggles at his comment. He shrugs. "But I wouldn't say that," He glances at Jack, who was clearly much better at skating than Phoebe was. "Jack is pretty good."

Julie shrugs, waving a dismissive hand. "So? He's not much of a competition now. He's too busy helping Phoebe."

"Yeah, true." Eric chuckled.

Meanwhile, Jack and Phoebe were slowly making their way around the rink. Phoebe stumbled a few times, but Jack was there to catch her, encouraging her along the way. As they skated, Phoebe couldn't help but feel a flutter in her stomach whenever she looked at Jack and she felt grateful for him help.

"Jack, I can't believe how good you are at this." Phoebe said in amazement. "You're like an ice skating pro!

Jack chuckles.  "Well, I've skated a few times before so I've gotten pretty good at it," He sends her a soft smile. "But thank you."

Meanwhile, from their place across the ice rink, Eric and Julie shared a knowing smile as they watch their friends.

"Do you think they'll ever figure out they both like each other?" Julie whispered to Eric.

Eric chuckles and shrugs. "Who knows? They can be so oblivious sometimes."

Sometime later, Eric and Julie skate over to where Jack and Phoebe were at.  "Hey, guys." Julie speaks up. She smiles widely, her eyes lighting up with excitement. "Let's try a race. Last one to the other side buys hot chocolate for everyone!"

"You're on!" Eric challenges, smirking at her. He points at her. "Prepare to be left in my icy dust!"

They laugh and smile in amusement at his comment. Then they all line up at the starting line they decided, ready to race.

"Careful, Eric." Phoebe teases Eric. "Thanks to Jack teaching me, I'm good enough to beat you."

Jack grins. "And I'll be cheering for Phoebe every step of the way."

"Jackie, I'm hurt!" Eric said, putting a hand over his heart and pretending to be offended. He grins. "I'm not worried about her." He glances at Julie, who had a look of determination on her face. He looks a bit scared, glancing back at Phoebe and Eric. "I'm more worried about Jules beating me."

"As you should be." Julie smirked.

As the race begins, Eric and Julie zoomed ahead, their competitive spirits on full display. Jack and Phoebe trailed behind, but their laughter fills the air.

"Phoebe, I think we're losing!" Jack jokingly said.

Phoebe laughs. "Who cares about winning? At least we're having fun and not gonna be exhausted by the end of it like those two dummies." She commented, pointing at Eric and Julie who were far ahead of them.

After they were done with ice skating, the group sits at a table, sipping on hot chocolate, their cheeks and noses rosy from the cold.

Eric playfully nudges Julie. "You know, I think I might have set a new speed record out there."

"Yeah, you might have." Julie laughs. "I can't believe I beat you though."

"Yeah," Eric pouts. "Me too." Julie chuckled and smiled at him with amusement.

"Jackie, thanks for helping me out today." Phoebe smiled at Jack.

"Not a problem. I had fun." Jack smiles back at her. "You can always count on me to help you out."

The next day in class Phoebe and Julie sat in the first row in the middle of their creative writing class they shared with Jack and Eric. Phoebe honestly loved writing, it was an easy way to express her creativity. Phoebe glanced up from her notebook when she saw Jack walk in out from the corner of her eye. She shared a smile with him as he sat down next to Eric near by her and Julie.

"Hey, bud." Jack said to Eric with a smile.

"Oh, sorry, buddy." Eric apologizes. "This seat's saved for..." He pauses for a moment before he dreamingly smiles and stares off into space. "Monica."

"He's been talking about," Julie copies what Eric does when he said Monica's name. "Monica for the past few minutes." She admits, giggling when Eric playfully rolled his eyes at her when she mocked him. "It's annoying."

Jack furrows his eyebrows. "What happened to..." He pauses before doing the same thing Eric and Julie did when he said, "Bridget?"

"She found out about...Monica." Eric explained, saying Monica's name the same way from before.

Phoebe laughs and shakes her head. "Jack, you can sit by me." She reassured him, gesturing to the empty seat by her.

Jack sends her a thankful smile, taking the seat by her. "Thanks, Bee."

"Oh, excuse me. Is this seat taken?"

Phoebe glances up from her notebook with surprised when she heard Eric's mother's voice. She didn't know Amy was taking this class. "Yes, mom." Eric replies, not even paying attention. After realizing what he said and who he was talking to, he does a double take and stares at his mom with wide eyes. He closes his notebook and stands. "Mom?!"

"Eric?" Amy said with surprise.

"W-What are you doin' here?" Eric nervously asks. He frowns. "Am I in trouble?"

"I'm in creative writing." Amy replied.

Eric smiles nervously. "But this is creative writing."

"Oh, I had no idea this was your class." Amy smiles and he chuckles nervously, glancing at his friends with a look that read 'help' and they smile at him with amusement. "But, well, you said to get out there in the world,  so here I am, back in school." Amy grinned.

"That's really brave of you, Amy." Phoebe complimented with a smile.

Amy smiles at her. "Thank you, Phoebe."

"No, not Amy." Eric quickly said, pointing at Phoebe with a stern look. "It's Mrs. Matthews to you."  Phoebe rolled her eyes and chuckled.

"Hey, maybe we could all have lunch together." Amy suggested with a smile.

"Yeah, that sounds great, Amy." Julie smiled.

"Mrs. Matthews to you to." Eric scolded her and Julie chuckled, rolling her eyes at him.

"Your mom is, like, so cool." Jack commented.

Eric chuckles nervously, leaning over to whisper to his friends, "No, she's not." He stands straighter, glancing at his mom. "Look, mom, when I said get back in the world, I meant, like...The mall."

Amy furrows her eyebrows. "Eric, I'm in creative writing because I always wanted to write. And your words really inspired me."

"Hold on," Julie chimes in. "Eric inspired you?" She asked in a playful surprised tone.

"Ha ha, very funny." Eric sarcastically said.

Amy chuckles lightly and nods. "I was hoping you'd be happy for me."

"Happy." Eric nods, smiling but his friends could tell it was very fake. "I am. I'm happy." He sits back down as his mom sat by him. "Yeah, who wouldn't be happy going to school with their mom?" He chuckles nervously. "Look, at least scoot down one, okay? This seat's saved for...Monica." He said dreamingly again.

"Gotcha." Amy nods and smiles. "You-You won't even know I'm here." She then got up and sat down at the other empty seat on the same row just as Monica walked in.

Monica sits down between her and Eric, smiling at Eric. "Hi." Eric smiled back at her.

"Oh, you must be Monica." Amy realizes with a smile. Monica nods and smiles at her. Amy leans forward to look at her son with a grin and whispers, "Eric, she's really pretty." Eric gave her a thumbs up with a pained smile. Phoebe and Julie shared an amused glance at the interaction.

"Hi." Monica greets Amy, smiling but she looked confused. "Who are you?"

Eric slides down in his chair, covering his face with an embarrassed look. Noticing Eric's reaction, Julie chuckled and smiled at him with sympathy. She felt bad for him, she would be very embarrassed if one of her parents had the same college class as her. She didn't blame him for acting this way.

"I'm Eric's mother." Amy replies, smiling at Monica. After seeing her son was slouching, she smiles at Eric." Sit up straight, dear."

"'And as I turned the corner and walked down that road, it occurred to me, either I was going the wrong way or that semi truck was, but that's life...And it's all we have.'" Eric dramatically said, finishing reading the paper he wrote the next day in class. He smiles and bows. "Thank you."

Everyone claps for him as he sat down by Jack. "Thank you, Eric." The professor smiles. "Next, we will hear from Amy."

Amy's eyes widen and she glances at Monica, who sat by her, nervously and smiles a bit when Monica smiled and pat her arm encouragingly. "Oh." She grabbed her notebook and got up to walk to the front, smiling at Phoebe and Julie when she noticed the encouraging looks they gave her and the thumbs up Phoebe sent her.

Amy puts her glasses on before she starts reading. She takes a deep breath. "Um, 'A Young Married Woman, by Amy Matthews'."

Eric chuckles and whispers to Jack. "Oh, this is great. A thousand words on dryer lint."

"'The wedding was over. I was nineteen and about to embark on a new life. The hotel suite was as lovely as a picture. Alan walked toward me, and I began to tremble.'"

Eric's eyes widen with fear and he quickly covered his ears when his mom kept talking.

Later that day, Julie was alone in her shared apartment working on homework. Phoebe wasn't in the apartment right now since she was out getting coffee with Jack and Julie made sure that they would get her some before they left. She suddenly heard a knock on the door. "Who is it?" She calls out, not glancing up from her notebook. She rolls her eyes when the door opened. "Or, you can just come on in, whatever." She chuckles and finally looked up, nodding in realization when she saw Eric, who had an upset look on his face as he slammed the door behind him. "Yeah, makes more sense." She muttered to herself. She wasn't surprised since Eric had walked in without announcing himself or knocking before.

Julie smiles softly at him. "Hi, Eric." She greets, watching with slight amusement and more concern as he flopped down on the couch, face first. "You alright?"

"No." Eric whines, his voice mumbled because of him being face down on the couch. "This is awful."

"What's awful? The fact that your mom is in a class with you?" Julie asks, raising her eyebrows. "I get it that tit's kinda weird..." Her voice trails off while he lifts his head up to send her a look. She nods and grimaces. "Okay, really weird, but she's allowed to go back to school."

"Yeah, I know that," Eric grumbles, moving from his laying position to sit up and crosses his arms stubbornly. "It's just so awkward. Why couldn't she pick another class, like, literally any other class that I don't have?"

Julie chuckles lightly and gets up from the dining table to sit by him. "You heard her the other day. She always wanted to be a writer so she's finally pursuing her dream. And it sounds like all because of you." She smiled.

Eric groans in annoyance. "Why do I have to be so inspiring?"

"The world will never know." Julie teased.

"Hey, where's Pheebs?" Eric questioned after scanning the apartment, noticing the brunette wasn't there.

"She's with Jack getting coffee." Julie replies, a small yawn leaving her lips. "And they better be getting me some 'cause I need coffee to stay awake." She smiles at him. "Hey, wanna watch a movie? It would help distract you from the fact your mom is in our class."

"Yeah, sure." Eric sighed, smiling at her.

The next day after class, Phoebe and Julie walked into Jack's and Eric's apartment with Jack and Amy. "Ew, gross." Julie grimaced, covering her eyes when she walked past Eric making out with Monica on the couch. Phoebe glanced over at the couch, raising her eyebrows at seeing the two. It seemed like Eric finally asked Monica out. She smiled a bit before she heads over to the table along with Julie, setting her backpack on a chair.

"Oh, hey, bud." Jack greeted, unphased by the scene as he walked over to join Phoebe and Julie at the table.

"Hi, kids." Amy smiled, closing the door behind her.

Eric quickly pulls away from Monica, eyes widening when he heard his mom and he looks nervous. Monica sheepishly smiles at Amy, her face red. "Hi, Amy."

"Amy?" Eric glances at Monica with furrowed eyebrows. "Her name is not Amy. Her name is Mrs. Matthews." He turns to the group at the table. "So...What are you guys dong?"

"We're working on homework together." Phoebe replied with a smile.

Jack nods. "Plus I had a little trouble with my writing assignment, so Amy offered to help." He smiles at Amy. "By the way, that last paper you wrote, I couldn't stop thinking about it." Amy smiled widely and waved a dismissive hand, acting like she didn't believe her work was that good.

"You're a really good writer, Amy." Phoebe commented.

"Yeah," Julie chimes in with a smile. "It was super good."

"That's because it was smut!" Eric raises his voice in frustration as he stands. The others glance at him with surprise at his sudden outburst. "'My lips quivered'. It was filth! It was squeamy filth!"

"Eric," Monica chimes in, standing up to stand by him with a smile. "The teacher gave Amy an 'A'."

"He's dirty too." Eric grumbled.

"Well, I think he's really going to like my next paper." Amy spoke, glancing at he paper she held with a smile.

"Let me see this, let me see this." Eric snatches the paper from her and reads it. "'An Evening in Cape Cod'." He smiles. "Now this is more like it." He begins to read it, his smile falling. "'As Alan touched me, my lips began to quiver'. Don't you do anything but quiver?" He asked in frustration, glaring at his mom. His face contorts to disgust and gags at reading the next part. "Oh, you do."

Amy takes the paper from him and rolls her eyes. "Oh, give me that."

"Mom..." Eric sighs. "College is my time. You shouldn't be here. You should be at home raising your kids. They're not done yet."

"Clearly the oldest one needs a lot of work." Julie joked, chuckling along with her friends.

"Ha ha," Eric sarcastically said, rolling his eyes playfully. "Shut up, Jules."

"I've been a mother and a wife for most of my life," Amy explains, putting her paper away into her backpack. "And I've loved it. But I need to be more." She walks over to the door and Eric watches her walk away with a regretful look on his face. "And if you're uncomfortable with that, then you're right-I shouldn't be here."

****

Phoebe noticed that things seemed to be better with Eric and his mom since she noticed Amy still stayed in the writing class. She was happy things were better between them. She felt bad for Amy, but she was glad she was still in the writing class and doing something she loved.  Phoebe sat next to Juliet in class this day in a row of two at the front while Eric, Monica, and Jack sat in a row of three at the front.

"So, Eric," Monica speaks, turning to Eric with a smile. "Are you okay with having your mom stay in the class?"

"Sure." Eric nods. "Uh, we had a little discussion, and she promised me no more revealing stories about her and dad."

"I'm gonna miss those." Jack admits and Monica nods in agreement. "Especially the one in the elevator."

"Uh, ah, bah!" Eric exclaimed, his eyes widening as he looked at Jack with disgust. Phoebe and Julie chuckled, looking at him with amusement.

"Amy, would you like to read us your latest short story?" The professor inquired.

"I'd be glad to." Amy smiled and got up with her paper.

"Alright, mom!" Eric cheered, clapping along with everyone else.

Amy stands behind the podium, putting her glasses on. "'A Mother's Struggle, by Amy Matthews. After thirty-six hours of screaming and sweating, my bundle of joy, Eric, gallantly made his way through the birth canal'."

This time everyone all groaned and grimaced, covering their ears but Eric was smiling widely. Eric then looked at everyone with offense.

A/N please this episode was so funny. this chapter focused a little bit more of eric's & julie's friendship since this episode focused a bit more on eric but there were still some cute moments with jack & phoebe :)
