partner is a loose term.
"YOU GET THE TASER," Clemson Murn, the designated leader of the group, said to Jada as he handed her the small taser. She, Murn, and Harcourt were in one car waiting outside of Peacemaker's trailer, while Economos and Leota Adebayo were in another car.
Jada arched a brow at him, looking down at the taser in disbelief. "Excuse me? Why can't I use my gun?" she questioned, going down to reach for it before she realized it wasn't in its holster.
"Looking for something?" Harcourt asked, holding Jada's gun to show her that she took it. "I was able to snag it on your way into the car. Sorry." But she didn't sound too sorry about it.
"What the fuck? You've gotta be kidding me," Jada said, growing angry.
"Harcourt told me about your personal agenda. It'll be safer for everyone if you had a less deadly weapon," Murn explained, causing Jada to roll her eyes and shake her head. "You'll get it back after we bring him with us safely."
"He doesn't deserve to be brought in safely," Jada argued.
Murn looked at Harcourt with a small sigh, causing the blonde to cut in. "Look, we all know your feelings about this topic by now. You just have to suck it up, use the taser, and wait till this goddamn mission is over before you try anything. Okay? I like you, Reyes, for the most part. I don't wanna see you go down an endless rabbit hole of bullshit just because you wanted 'revenge'."
Jada pursed her lips. She'd been continuously on the same topic after being assigned the mission and she couldn't just let it go.
She wouldn't.
But of course she wasn't allowed to share her true feelings on the subject without being shit on, so she had to do what Harcourt said: suck it up.
"Fine," she said, pressing the button on the taser to made sure it worked. It zapped loudly, causing Murn's eyes to widen. "Let's do this shit then."
"Infiltrating the Dove's nest is a go," Murn then said into his radio to alert Economos and Adebayo. They then all got out of their cars, sneaking up to Peacemaker's trailer. "Harcourt, Reyes, go behind," Murn instructed and the women made their way behind the trailer.
They slowly snuck around before they noticed a broken window. They glanced at each other before stepping into view of it, Harcourt immediately cocking her gun once they saw the man of interest. "Stay where you are, Smith," Harcourt said, pointing the gun right at him.
Jada held up her taser, which probably wasn't as threatening as the gun, but it would have to do for now. But just seeing the man made her eyes narrow and her grip on the taser tighten. She didn't think she could hate someone this much, even though she was a pretty mean person, but this was different. If she wasn't so restricted in resources, she could have killed him right then if she wanted to. Honestly, the shards of glass on the grass were looking pretty nice right now.
But she knew she couldn't do that. Not with people around.
Smith's eyes widened in shock before he noticed Economos and Adebayo stationed at the other two windows, his brows furrowed.
Murn then opened the door to the trailer, walking in. "Fuck. Fuck! I knew it was fucking too good to be true! Fuck! Fuck! Fuck! My life fuckin' sucks! I mean...Ah, fuck. Ah, nah, I'm fu — I'm — I'm — I'm good. I'm fucking — I'm good. FUCK!" Smith went on, causing Jada to roll her eyes at him. Oh, how she wanted to just shoot his face off.
Once the team had made their way into his home and they had forced him to go into the 'living room space', Murn began to speak. "You only served four years of your thirty-year sentence and you thought we were just gonna let you go scot-free?"
"Yeah. I killed Rick Flag for you people," Smith said, causing Jada's jaw to immediately clench.
"No one ever told you to kill Flag," Harcourt quickly rebutted, glancing at Jada's tense figure. She could pounce at any moment.
"Waller said do whatever I had to do to make sure those Project Starfish files didn't get out. I made the only choice I could," Smith explained, seeming to feel sorry for himself.
Jada let out a loud scoff. "The only choice you could? And that was killing him? That's funny coming from the man that calls himself 'Peacemaker'," Jada spoke up, taking a step forward threateningly. Murn quickly held his arm out from where he sat, stopping Jada from going any further.
Smith narrowed his eyes slightly at her before he noticed Economos going through his fridge. "What the fuck is he doing?" he asked, changing the subject.
"I have low blood sugar, okay? So I'm dizzy," Economos told him awkwardly as Jada took a step back, crossing her arms over her chest.
"You showed you were loyal. You're a born killer with expertise in every weapon known to humankind, and you've had experience in black ops around the globe. So I'm giving you the chance to stay out of prison and work for me," Murn told him, making Jada roll her eyes once again.
Smith scoffed. "And you are?"
"Name's Murn," Murn answered monotonously.
"Clemson Murn?" Smith asked, seeming to know who he was.
"That's right. I report directly to Amanda Waller. This is Harcourt, who you may know from Waller's team at Belle Reve," Murn introduced, gesturing to the blonde. Smith gave her a rather flirty smile, causing Harcourt to give him a dry wave in return. "She'll be your handler in the field. John Economos, who you may also know, is tech and tactics."
"Hey, dude, you're eating four-year-old olives out of my fuckin' fridge," Smith told Economos, causing the man to start gagging on them.
"Jada Reyes, also a part of Waller's team at Belle Reve," Murn continued, gesturing to Jada. Smith looked at her, something flashing across his face that Jada couldn't quite pinpoint, which she hated. She always knew, and liked to know, what someone may have been thinking or feeling. So the fact that she didn't know what the man she despised was thinking, made her even more angry than she already was. "She'll be your combative partner in the field."
"Partner is a loose term," Jada added, staring straight daggers at Smith. He nodded slowly, his brows furrowed in concern.
"And this is our new recruit, Leota Adebayo, which means she'll be doing most everything else," Murn went on, ignoring Jada's comment.
"Glad to be here. Ready to kick some ass, sir. And really lookin' forward to gettin' to know all of you," Adebayo started to say awkwardly. "Even you, Peacemaker. Uh, even though you're not the best guy in the world. And Economos, you seem like you're very easy to talk to, so I looked forward to working with you," she continued, making Economos laugh. "Harcourt and Reyes, I feel like, because we're the only women here, we have to have each other's back. Anything you guys need, I got you."
Jada arched a brow at the woman, but didn't say anything. She could tell that Adebayo was being genuine and she actually found her words rather nice, but she was kind of embarrassing herself around them all.
"And, Mr. Murn, I have to say your outfits are really dapper. I'm really excited to be here, and I promise, you're not gonna regret this. I know inside my mind I'm not supposed to be giving a speech, but sometimes my mouth just does what it wants, so...Close mouth. I'm bitin' my tongue right now. Not gonna talk again. I'm done talking," she finished quietly. Jada just stared at her in disbelief, not believing that she would be working with these people.
Smith scoffed quietly before he looked back at Murn. "What's the op?" he asked.
Murn clicked his tongue. "Domestic situation, known as Project Butterfly."
"As I recall, you guys aren't particularly creative with the case file names. Project Starfish was a giant walkin' starfish. So, what, am I fighting a Mothra now?" he questioned jokingly with a laugh. "I am?" he then said, his face dropping once he noticed Harcourt's glance at Economos. "I'm fighting' a Mothra? What the fuck do I fight a Mothra with?"
"That's not what it is," Murn quickly cut in before Smith could continue talking.
"Can I get a jet pack?" Smith then asked, making Jada scoff quietly.
"No," Murn answered.
"How the fuck am I supposed to fight a Mothra without a jet pack?" Smith refuted.
"It's not a Mothra."
"Still, my desire for a jet pack remains 'cause you got me all excited about it."
"You're not getting a fucking jet pack," Jada told him sternly, quickly getting tired of his stupidity. The fact that this man was a trained killer made her want to blow her own brains out.
"But—"
"We need you to do contract work," Murn cut him off, getting back on topic.
Smith closed his eyes, realizing what he meant. "Kill people?"
"Bad people," Harcourt specified, sending Jada a quick look from behind her.
"Whom we call Butterflies," Murn told him.
Smith exhaled audibly. "What if I say no?"
"You'll have to return to Belle Reve."
"What's to keep me from splittin'?" Smith asked.
"We still have that bomb in your head to track with you and if that fails, we'll blow you the hell up," Murn revealed, causing Jada to smirk slightly at Smith's reaction to that. Once Smith didn't answer right away, Murn added, "We'll meet you for dinner tonight. Seven-thirty at — Where is it?"
"Fennel Fields on Manchester Road," Adebayo reminded him. "And the mozzarella sticks are dope."
Harcourt then opened the door, getting ready to head out of the trailer. Jada kept her stare on Smith as she slowly followed Harcourt, not wanting to let him out of her sight until she was completely out the door.
"Enjoy my food, Dye-Beard," Smith said, talking to Economos.
Economos scoffed. "It's not dyed," he told him.
Smith chuckled. "Oh, yeah, sure. Hard edge of two-tone gray and Magic Marker brown...that's natural," Smith replied sarcastically.
Economos laughed nervously, "No."
"I'll be there," Jada heard Smith say before he was out of earshot.
"That man is the most obnoxious man I have ever fucking met in my entire life. And I've spoken to Blackguard once before," Jada said, her fist curling in and out of a ball while her other hand was tightened around her taser. "Oh, this fucking thing," she muttered, tossing the taser on the ground.
"Oh, I think you dropped this," Adebayo said, picking it up from the ground for Jada.
"Obviously," Jada bit back, looking back at Adebayo in annoyance. "You can keep the fucking thing, I don't need it," she told her before she purposefully bumped into Harcourt in front of her, slipping her gun from out of the blonde's pocket. She was then able to sneak it into her holster under her shirt. "Sorry," Jada apologized even though it wasn't exactly genuine.
"Whatever," Harcourt replied, not noticing what Jada had just done whatsoever.
