animals usually don't like wearing things.
"YOU HAVE HIM ON THE TRACKER?" Murn asked over the phone as Adebayo drove Jada and Harcourt to where Smith was.
"Yeah, it looks like he's still inside the apartments. We're almost there," Harcourt told him as she looked at the tracker inside his body.
"Okay, get him out of there."
"I don't see why we can't just blow him up and remove the evidence that way," Jada said from the backseat, shaking her head in disbelief at Smith's stupidity.
"Reyes...I don't think I need to remind you how important this operation is," Murn responded sternly, not in the mood for her jokes that really weren't jokes.
"We've got it handled," Harcourt cut in, not in the mood for Jada to start talking back, even though she was planning on not answering anyway. "Don't worry, I'm almost there." She then hung up the phone and started taking out her weapons. "You know...in your room, what you have in there, that's not safe," Harcourt began to tell Adebayo as she loaded up her gun.
"What?"
"You had someone in your room."
"Is it against regulation?" Adebayo asked.
"I didn't say that."
"What are you doing?"
"This op is off the books," Harcourt continued, ignoring Adebayo's question. "We don't have regulations, but it's not safe, is it? For her, I mean."
"I don't know!" Adebayo exclaimed.
"It's not," Harcourt answered for her.
"What are you doing?"
"Watch the road."
"I also have dogs. Do you think they're safe?" Adebayo questioned in concern.
"Are they big dogs?" Harcourt queried, and Jada just rolled her eyes at how stupid this conversation was.
"No, they're pretty small, but one of 'em, Emerson, he likes to wear these little outfits. Do you think that's gonna make him a bigger target?" she asked in genuine worry.
"Are you being serious?" Jada questioned, leaning forward in her seat. Yeah, she had her cats with her, but she wasn't this clueless about operations like Adebayo was. How did she even get this job?
"Uh, yeah!" Adebayo responded before she swerved away from the car in front of her, causing it to beep at them. "Shit. Almost hit that bitch."
"Reyes, take out your gun you stole back from me," Harcourt instructed monotonously, ignoring Adebayo.
Jada arched a brow. "How'd you know?" she said as she took out the gun, not needing to load it since it already had bullets in it.
"It's not that hard to feel a gun being pulled out of your pocket, but I didn't care enough to say anything," Harcourt answered nonchalantly.
"But I could have easily shot Smith with it," Jada argued, narrowing her eyes at the blonde.
"But I knew you wouldn't for the sake of your job." Harcourt glanced over her shoulder at her. "You aren't dumb enough to do that, are you?"
Jada licked her lips, knowing that Harcourt was right. She would never risk her position over something like revenge, even if it was perfectly reasonable revenge. She knew she would have to wait until after the mission was over, which was hopefully soon.
"Well...you got me there," Jada truthfully replied since there was no point in lying.
Harcourt chuckled dryly before Adebayo began to slow down the car since they had reached where the apartment buildings were. "Could you move any fuckin' slower?" the blonde challenged.
"I'm trying to be sneaky," Adebayo declared quietly before she finally pulled to a stop.
Jada looked out the window to see a bunch of cop cars with flashing lights outside of the building. "Oh, shit," Harcourt muttered. "Can you believe this idiot fucked a butterfly?"
"I mean, the man's been in prison for four years. There's not much I'd believe he wouldn't fuck. A bowl of oatmeal, a grapefruit, some yogurt," Adebayo listed before she rubbed her stomach. "I'm hungry," she sighed.
"Did you seriously just list things he would fuck and then that made you hungry?" Jada asked in disgust. She agreed with the woman at first, but would never have an appetite after the mention of Smith fucking something. Probably because she was already so repulsed by him anyway.
Adebayo shrugged, not seeing the big deal. "Look, I know you don't believe me, but Emerson, he really does like to wear clothes. If you don't put him in something new in the morning, he'll just whine until you do," she continued on the subject from before, causing Jada to scrunch her face up in confusion since it held no actual relevance.
"Do you pet the dog when he looks cute in these clothes?" Harcourt asked.
"I guess."
"He doesn't want to wear the clothes, he's just willing to humiliate himself for your love," Harcourt told her, glancing back at Jada for a split second. Jada furrowed her brows, wondering if the blonde was aiming that at her for some reason. She couldn't be since Jada wasn't doing anything for anyone's love, was she? And she certainly wasn't humiliating herself either.
"I think he just likes lookin' smart," Adebayo rebutted casually.
"Animals usually don't like wearing things," Jada told her since she knew from personal experience. She tried putting a Star Wars costume on one of her cats, and then she ended up ripping it to shreds.
"How would you know?" the woman asked, but Jada only responded with a shrug.
Harcourt looked back out the window again, squinting to see if she could find Peacemaker. "Where the fuck is he?"
"Emerson? He's at home."
"Not the fucking dog! Peacemaker," Harcourt snapped, her annoyance building up at the woman.
"I wouldn't be surprised if he decided to fuck something else," Jada voiced with an eye roll, poking the side of her mouth with her tongue.
"I'm gonna call him," Harcourt sighed, pulling out her phone and pressing on his number. "What the fuck are you still doing in there?" she questioned after a second.
"I told you, I'm getting important shit!" Jada heard Peacemaker answer over the phone, making her shake her head in disbelief.
"Well, there are too many cops outside the front door, so you're gonna need to find another way out," Harcourt directed.
"Do you see Eagly out there at all?"
"Your eagle?"
"Yeah, could you, uh, could you look for him? Is he out there?"
"No, man, I'm not gonna fucking look for your eagle!"
"Harcourt, it's — do me a solid. Just roll down the window, stick your hand outside, and then crinkle a bag. He'll think you have chips. He'll come right out to you," Smith told her, making Jada scoff to herself. This man was unbelievable.
"Why are you feeding him chips?" Harcourt exclaimed.
Jada looked out the window at the police, seeing them notice a shiny helmet at one of the windows. "Fuck, they saw him," Jada spoke to alert Harcourt, watching as the police began to speak to each other.
"Really? You didn't fucking trust me?" Harcourt asked Smith angrily.
"I cannot believe this man," Jada muttered to herself, rubbing her face dramatically. He was going to be death of her if she didn't kill him first. She then watched as the police started to head inside the building and towards different sides of it, trying to find him.
"There's no exit on the back of the building, so see if you can get to a balcony on the second floor and jump," Harcourt instructed him.
"Jump?" Adebayo called out in a high voice, making Harcourt give her an incredulous look.
"All right, go around back, go around back."
Adebayo then began to drive the car around back slowly, not wanting to accidentally be caught by anyone. "Damn, my heart is beating! Are your hearts beating?"
"No, my heart stopped beating," Harcourt replied coldly.
"Oh, come on. Jada! What about you?" Adebayo excitedly asked.
"I don't fucking care," Jada responded, staring out the window at nothing. She didn't feel like doing this right now, especially after what happened before. Someone could have seen her walk out of that alley filled with dead bodies, and those cops could easily know about her, too. If she was ever going to see that vigilante guy ever again, he was going to get a run for his money.
"Damn. You guys must be fun at parties," Adebayo whispered under her breath, but the both of them paid no attention. Adebayo continued to drive around back before she spotted him, "There he is."
Jada watched as he threw a bag down onto a different balcony before he jumped down after it, landing pretty hard. "Fuck!" Adebayo said at the same time Harcourt mumbled, "Ow."
Jada laughed to herself, hoping that would keep on happening. And, her wish came true, because he did it again, landing even worse onto a railing.
But, her fun was spoiled when sirens sounded in front of them, the police also coming around back. "God dammit," Harcourt voiced under her breath.
Even though Smith getting arrested would be detrimental to the mission, Jada didn't really seem to care unless she was somehow brought into it. The man deserved to go back to prison anyway.
She looked over her shoulder to see police rounding the building to where Smith kept jumping from, getting closer to him by the second. "They're gonna catch him," she said.
"Fuck."
"What do we do now?" Adebayo questioned.
Harcourt sighed before she unbuckled her seatbelt. "Wait here," she told her. "Reyes, stay with her, please?"
"No problem," Jada answered with a bored tone. She didn't feel like saving the guy anyway.
"Listen, I can help! I'm stellar with weapons and combat!" Adebayo explained.
"Cool your jets, Jason Bourne. Just be ready to take off when we get back to the car." And with that, Harcourt ran off to go help him.
"Being a wheelman is also dope! I got you!" Adebayo yelled after her, causing Jada to quickly shush her. "Oops, sorry."
"How did you even get this job? You clearly don't understand any aspects to a secret operation," Jada pointed out, tilting her head.
"Well, uh, I'm qualified," Adebayo answered hesitantly.
"Sure you are," Jada muttered. "But I don't care. As long as you don't get me killed, then I don't care where you came from."
"Why are all you guys so mean? I thought we were supposed to be a team."
"Being a team doesn't mean we have to get along. Saving the universe is the priority, not relationships," Jada answered coldly before she heard gunshots being fired. "Get ready."
Adebayo started the car once she saw Harcourt running towards them. The blonde opened up the door and sat in the passenger's seat, waiting for Peacemaker.
Jada quickly ducked down in her seat right as the window shattered right next to her from a bullet, causing her eyes to widen. Adebayo screamed, "Shit! Should I take off?"
"No, he's not fucking here yet!" Harcourt yelled back at her.
Peacemaker then came running over and he opened the door, waiting for some reason as more bullets continued to smash the windows. Jada scooted over before an eagle flew into the backseat, making her gasp in shock. Peacemaker then hopped in, causing her to be smushed against the other car door since she didn't want to touch the animal, or him.
"Go, go!" he shouted. "What are you waiting for?"
Adebayo then drove off to escape the bullets, wanting to get out of there as fast as she could. "That thing better not shit back there," Harcourt told him as they drove off.
"You can't housetrain an eagle, dude. Not without stealing its soul," Smith answered.
"If it shits on me, you're gonna more dead than before," Jada threatened with dark eyes, but it only caused him to start to laugh. They then all started to laugh, except for Jada, who held an annoyed look on her face. She sighed to herself, looking out the window to drown their laughter out.
