Purgatory Pt. 4

The wind whips past my scales and wings as I soar nimbly through the air, my scales cooled to an comfortable warmth against the blazing inferno within me as this five hour flight is coming to an end. 'Alas, I'm pretty early! I drew my wings closer to my body as I went into a deep dive, the wind screaming through my scales and against my third eyelid. As the trees tops approach I lower my tail, tipping upwards, speed glided over the tree tops, the cottage standing tall on the side of  Left -half peak's mountain base.

I rise on the breeze as I approach the cottage, circling it once to check for signs of animals breaking  in or nesting since the last time I was here. Satisfied that the cottage is unharmed I bellow as I fly higher up the mountain range, pumping my wings hard thrice  before tucking my wings to my body briefly then spreading them wide once I clear the landing pad on top of my cave, lowering my landing gear as I fan my wings to slow my descent, muscles tensing deliciously as I land on my hind feet.

Bellowing once more I make my presence and claim over this land known. Scratching the rocks with my hooked talons, rubbing my jaw on the jagged rocks to spread my scent to ward off other predators, they've tangled with me enough to know what time it is when I show up on this mountain. I shake my head and neck back and forth, letting my frills flow in the breeze, instinctively  downloading today's weather temperature, humidity, my exact location from the plains Cabin, and the wind speed. I growl, pleased with myself as I hook my talons in the rock and climb down face first the rock face, letting go and landing gracefully at the entrance of my cave. I take a few steps forward and look down my natural balcony to the house directly below me.

I look out over my land, the trees green and plentiful, further to the left of the mountain range a large plains was visible. From even here I could see the Impala playing in the fields scatter at the sound of my bellow.

Chuckling I turn and head inside my cave, I shift to human form, my chest and peach covered in scales as I walk under the archway, my pack shifting with me to become a backpack resting on my naked back. Stretching as I walk further into the cave, heeding the hidden traps and take a right into a small room, a little apartment within the mountain for my parents when they felt the need to come up here or sleep with me.

I walk to the back of the room and place my hand into a shallow crevice. Calling my inner fire to the surface the flames encase my hand, scales beginning to grow from under my skin, breaking the surface painlessly to reveal my magenta and black scales, grinning as the rock wall suddenly shifts backwards three feet into the mountain sliding to the left to reveal the generator room. I grip the enchanted handles and call more of my fire out from within me, my form is enveloped by the flames while the handles begin the process of sucking the flames into the tiny holes in the metal and converts the fire to electricity. Within two minutes I've filled it to max capacity. 'Shouldn't have to come back in here for a month.'

I exit the room and put my hand back in the crevice, the flames still licking at my skin as the rock slab returns to hide the room. I flip the switch to the right of the crevice and the smaller slabs scattered across the room room slide back and into the mountain to reveal the sky light big enough for me to fly in and out of. The wall behind me sinks downwards to reveal the furnished kitchen and living room to my left. A doorway is also revealed within the living room that leads to my parents' bedroom. I walk through the hall and see the room has transformed, the mason shutters already within the wall to reveal the the huge bay opening to their balcony and openings in the wall that act as windows. "Well that's taken care of."

Pulling the backpack off my back I throw it into the bed as the flat screen comes out of its mason case sitting comfortably on the wall. I reach in the enchanted backpack and pull out two envelops with my name on it and underneath (DO NOT OPEN UNTIL TONIGHT!!!) 'They know me so well.' A single talon grows from my finger as I slice the letters open and pull two thesaurus sized books titled "Dragon Armor" and "The Art of Metal Tips", five metal ingots, and a bag that sounds like its full of scrap metal.

I rummage further and pull out my favorite dessert, blood & apple pie with mineral rock sprinkled over it. I see a slice is already cut but covered in plastic wrap. "They really do know me too damn well." Smiling to myself I pull out my father's letter first.

Dear Ferocity, happy 10th birthday, as you know this is a year of passage and rights for dragons. And it is on this year me and your mother have decided to give you the best present we could ever give you. The homestead is yours, yours to rule, to maintain, to protect, to live and be the dragon I know you to be.

While this is a huge step in your development it also comes with a price, we will not be joining you. I also know you probably haven't been there an hour and you already opened this, none the less, I want you to understand you are the best daughter an old coot like me could have ever asked for. You're brave, determined, loyal, driven and powerful.

We will come to visit in a month. I can't begin to tell you how to run your own territory, that's something you're going to have to learn on the fly but I know you can do it. Take care of yourself, I love you with the intensity of all the shinning stars. Enjoy the gifts, love you always.

Dad

I sit trembling slightly staring at the letter brushing my finger over Dad before I quickly pull my mom's letter out, my heart racing and my scales coming to the surface, the scales covering my lady parts nearly scorching.

Hey baby girl, Happy 10th birthday! Words don't describe the pride I feel at having raised you thus far. I remember the first time I saw this tiny pile of wings and scales emerge from the woods, that glitter and innocence in your eyes and how as time went on I discovered that glitter was the inferno within you, and that innocence was just a ploy to get me to love you that much faster.

We know you're far from innocent, as I KNOW you didn't wait for nightfall to read this, and you probably didn't put the pie in the fridge before you took your slice out.

The pie and books are my gift to you, the homestead and metal are from your father. Yes, the homestead is yours. I know you'll make it without us, this past year we've needed you more than you have needed us!

We'll come visit in a month exactly, use this time to begin maintaining your territory and exploring. Enjoy the pie, I'll bring more soon.

We have and always will love you, no matter where you are or when you are.

Love,

Mom

My chest constricts painfully and I bite my lip to stop the trills from escaping, a dark cloud over my day now. "I don't want this if it doesn't include you." The tears drip down my face onto the paper.

I close my eyes and inhale deeply as a chill began to creep up my spine, snapping my eyes open I cradle the books and letters to my chest and the pie in another hand as I race to the living room. I jump over the couch and slide the pie in the fridge then back into the living room to the book case, laying the books I have on top of each other I search the shelf for the book I was looking for, a nagging sensation building in my head as my heart continued to drop.

Within my chest my flame howled in rage and furry. 'Something is wrong, I could have sworn... gotcha.' "The life cycle of a dragon by Fantasy" suddenly appears in front of me. 'Thank you enchanted furniture.'

I flip the book open to the first few pages and scroll until I find what I was searching for, the passage on juveniles and their parents.

"Typically dragons' prefer not to kick offspring out of the nest, only in times of dwindling hatchings and the ability to care for them do adult dragons kick their young out of the nest. Usually the then juvenile lives within an hour or two flight of the parents unless there is also a lacking in available territory, then the juvenile will travel to a colony of others who have small patches of territory next to each other in an attempt to mimic a Gale of dragons to keep predators at bay."

With trembling hands I lay the book on the desk to the left of the bookcase. "They lied to me, I knew that didn't sound right." My mind races for answers and the chill begins to spread through my fire, the energy around me vibrating with hostility.

Without warning my muscles lock up and I fall onto the floor on my hands and knees, the overwhelming feeling of flying away as fast as I can fills my being, I shift instantly and prepare to fly away but stop dead in my tracks. My heart turning automatically in the direction of the cabin as dread I've never felt before settles within my inner inferno and I feel the unshakable feeling something is in my old territory and crossed the magical boundary for the Cabin.

Is it Lord? No it can't be they're his followers, it's something else or I wouldn't feel this way. They need me, I have to fight! Roaring my challenge and leap up through the sky light, slamming my talons into the rock as I climb through the hole to the roof.

Without pause I rush down the mid and launch myself off the landing pad fearlessly barreling down the mountain, dodging rock outcroppings I snap my wings open before I collide into the house and fly straight up using my momentum to propel me past my two hundred foot cruising altitude, my goal the turbulent winds far above.

As I shook past my normal cruising altitude my wings begin to feel heavier the higher I climb, still not developed enough to fly this high. 'If I don't get up there I won't make it in time.' I growl and push myself harder mentally reaching for my inner fire. How about a little help?!

Instantly a magic circle forms around me and follows me as I fly higher. Flames leak from underneath my scales encasing me and spreading further past my body. I watched in wonder as my muscles ached less as the flames spread more, taking the form of a dragon. 'So this is the dragon's cloak?'

The circle disappears slowly as the fire spreads to two times my size, dragging my consciousness into the flaming body, and gave into the wild recklessness of my instincts.

I acknowledge my primal side as I allow it to take over, my inferno roars its recognition at me allowing it out into the world.

I'm buffeted by the wind the moment I fly into the clouds. Closing my wings I spin and right myself so my belly is to the ground. Snapping my wings open the wind drags me with it. I snort satisfied, 'I can just glide, at this rate I should be there within the hour, damn I just landed less than an hour ago and it's nearly six in the morning.

"I have been within you all your life until this moment, let me take over until we get there," her voice resembling falling rocks as she talk out loud. "You will see what I see until we get there, this way you can make us stronger.

'That's really cool! What else can we do?'

"Go to sleep so I can tell you hatchie." She chuckled and the feeling of sleep over took me.

It felt like I rushing through water until I blinked a few times and the sky came back to me. As the end of my face was a flaming snout black and purple like my scales. I felt my immense power within my chest building, my head turning without my permission I see my body curled up in a tiny ball.

"See?" She turned her head and looked ahead once more, adjusting herself as she flew with the aid of our frills. "These sure do come in handy, can't imagine being born without them."

'You seem rather calm... you are a lot different than how you normally feel.' I reply.

"You have yet to feel me enraged, just wait until we get there. A dragon bides their time, doesn't waste a single resource, and always remains cool under pressure. Just because I'm raging doesn't mean my actions must resemble some out of control animal." She answers simply as the flames get brighter and we begin moving faster.

'What are you doing?' I tilt my head curiously.

"Raising my temperature to mirror the heat around us," she states.

'It feels like you're running at a billion degrees, plus it's around eighty degrees right now, you're a lot hotter than that,' I reply quickly.

"You have much to learn, while the humans have been teaching you I have been listening and applying the skills. I'm trying to mirror the heat within the Earth, in order to call fire to yourself more accurately you have to resemble it for the flames to completely recognize you. Currently you've just been calling whatever fire is available and on your frequency when it should be all fire within the area you can summon will heed you... we're here. Let's do this."

I'm suddenly thrust back into my head as she goes into a deep dive and I feel her own barriers released. Pulsating primal energy rushes to the surface, our flames glittering brightly against my scales as she focuses on the burning cabin.

Below us I see my parents weaving spells, balls of light and fire flying wildly at another individual dressed in a cloak, their movement's fluid like as they dodge my parents' attacks, shooting back with a giant wicked compound bow. My father chants quickly, a ball of fire forming between his outstretched fingers, suddenly races towards the stranger and turns into a saw blade as it slices through the air. The stranger jumps into the air above the flames and black wings cut through their cloak, holding the compound bow up as a shield as the fire doubles back, disintegrating as it collides with the bow.

"Let's see you dodge this." Our tail moves downwards and our belly is exposed as we fall out the sky, wings closed as she opens her jaws and bellows at a low frequency. Fire begins to pool from our body into an rotating sphere almost her size. She kicks it with her foot and the orb charges towards the hooded figure with the bow.

'Too bad they're too stupid to look up, but since when did humans have wings?! Christ they're huge, nearly eight feet tall,' I blanch.

"That's not human, I don't know what it is but it's dead!" She growled as the stranger looked up in time to see the flaming boulder crash right into them.

I taste ash, dirt, and fibers in my mouth suddenly and I can hear an inhuman wail fill my ears.

"Whatever is in that fire we feel as if we are there, great for combat." She says simply as she pulls out of the dive. We race over the tree tops, the wind screaming in our ears as my parents look up as I soar over them, wonder and fear illuminating their eyes.

As one we rear up, talons and teeth out and slam into the figure still within the floating fire boulder. I feel a toe talon pierce their chest as their body plummets through the sky, the flames still on them. They crash into the ground several yards away.

Our body trembles as we roar, the fire taking over my consciousness. I feel the threads of existence and the individual fire particles turn as one to look at me. 'No more holding back' I say pulling it all to me, the energy threatening to take over but my inner dragon keeps it in check as it builds, until finally I snap. A wave of fire breaks away and spreads all around us, the fire passes harmlessly over my parents and the house but burns the land around us as sparks rise into the air flittering around us, the air unbearably hot to all others, the ground of the property covered in a flaming magic circle.

"This is Fiery Field, gives all fire attacks a boost and ups our attack power." We hover between the still flaming body and parents, growling louder with each wing thrust.

The fire around the stranger suddenly dissipates, revealing the tall and unnaturally beautiful woman with her black wings spread and fluttering softly.

"My my, this is a surprise. Chase, I thought you said you knew nothing of dragons? Yet here one is, fighting for you. Interesting. Dragon I am.."

I open my jaws as I inhale deeply, the fire in my belly churning excitedly as it fills my chest, when I can't inhale any further I lock my eyes on the target and release the stream of fire onto the stranger. Behind me I hear my dad whooping and clapping and feel his consciousness brush mine for entry, I let him and my mom in.

'WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?!?! FLY AWAY!!!' He roars at me through our connection.

"Way to thank me for saving your lives." My inner dragon replies calmly. "You should have known better, dragons don't leave their clan members behind," she growls directed at him but none the less we share the sensation of hugging, nuzzling, and licking their faces.

'Ferocity, please fly away, we don't want you hurt.' My mom pleaded with us.

"Is that why you LIED to me? No matter, I'm here now and we're getting you out and going back to the homestead, got it?" I growl at them daring them to disagree, now one with my inner fire.

'...Ferocity,' Chase begins but I snarl loudly cutting him off as I stop the stream of fire, the stranger standing with a wicked shield with curved points all around that resembled hooks and jagged blades. "What is that thing?"

'A fallen Angel, they've come to try and capture you! Please Ferocity, fly away while you ca.." My mom starts until the stranger starts slow clapping.

"Bravo, was that the first time you breathed fire? Felt like it, now as I was saying before you rudely interrupted me, dragon my name is Zeriel, fallen angel of the third level of Hell and Queen of Calamity. I like the display of force but you're coming with me now."

"Kiss the dark part of my tail maggot, I'm not going anywhere, but you're damn sure are going back to Hell." I suck in a lung full quickly and spit a magenta fire ball at her. Zeriel holds her bow up and the flames part before it, flowing past her. I study her pale perfect heart shaped face, her eyes are completely black like her wings. She throws her cloak to the side, revealing armor and a wicked two hand sword on her back. She looks at me and takes aim with the bow, an arrow appearing before the lets the string loose.

"If you don't come with me beast you go with no one, make your choice." She chimes happily.

Quickly I form another fire boulder and chuck it at her once more as I watch the arrow sail through the air at me. I close my wings and duck just as it flies through the fire between my horns where my snout had just been. I land on the ground on my rear legs and charge her, my forearms tucked to my body as I close the gap and lunge for her head.

She leaps over me, her wings spread wide as she lets loose another arrow. I hold my wing up and block it from my physical body and cover her in dragon fire while I leap up and bite her lower torso. I land with her in my mouth and shake my head violently until I hear the tear of fabric and see a dark mass fly to the left, her eyes wide and unblinking. I throw the other half of her torso over my shoulder and release another jet of flames on her body, raising my temperature to a nearly dizzying point. "Did we do it?" I say breathlessly as I cut off the current.

"No, but it was a good shot at it, I'm honestly impressed. No wonder Dreavel doesn't want to share you," she said grinning to my left.

I turn over my tail in an arc and smack her with the broad end and send her sailing into the forest. I line of trees goes down with her as she slides through the earth. I roar and leap into the air and rise high above the farm, reaching out to the fire around me.

Once more it is me and the eyes in a thousand places. My determination oozes within my fire with my simple command. "Protect them." Instantly fire rises at the end of the magic barrier and forms a fire shield around the property. I fly out of the shield towards the fast approaching fallen angel. "Try this on for size." I sail over her with a powerful thrust of my wings as she dives at me with her sword out at my right wing. Curling into a ball I spinning forward in the air and barrel on top of her, feeling my spikes and spines between my frills, down my back, and tail cut into her armor, coupled with the sound of metal tearing.

I raise my head mid spin and catch her body in my jaws. Spinning faster I suddenly throw her into the ground, spreading my wings and flying up to put myself between her and my family once more as the dust cloud fills the air. I hover and beat my wings harder, blowing the dust away to reveal the crater.

Searching frantically I don't see the body. 'Where is it?!'

"Behind you, I also have a name ya know." A force hits me between my wing blades and sends me barreling to the ground. "Stop fighting me, you're going to die if you keep this up." Zeriel chimes with a grin.

"The only one dying today is the flying rat with a bad mouth piece." Folding one wing in I turn around midair and release another jet of flames at her, while thrusting my wings powerfully I land silently on the ground, shaking my wings and rolling my shoulders as I maintain the stream of fire.

I stop the stream and see her black shield right as it crashes into my snout. I squeal in pain, falling onto my side. I roll onto my feet quickly as she throws her sword down at where my tail had been.

"So you were talking about yourself then? Stop moving before I lose my patience." She snarls through gritted elongated teeth.

"Funny you aren't more concerned with losing your head!" I lung at her with open jaws and frills raised, my fire in my throat. She flutters her wings and flies over me. 'Gotcha bitch.' I lift my tail and wrap the tip around her ankle, I yank her back to Earth and leap into the air, my serpentine body coiling and turning quickly I flap my wings once diving at her.

She rolls as my talons descend where her chest had been a millisecond earlier. A large black boot flies at my head, I jerk my wing up and slam it into her chest, swatting her away effectively. I release the pent up fire ball, roaring as it collides with her and envelops her.

'Now is our chance.' I stand and walk out of the flaming cocoon. 'Give me a boost,' I call to her. tucking my wings tightly against my flank. My flaming counterpart raises onto her hind legs and picks me up in her talons gently. Cocking her arm back she throws me up into the air as hard as she can. My body tense like an arrow I keep my wings closed and unfurl them as I complete a back flip and dive through the fire shield to my parents. 'Jump, I'll catch you!' I project to them as I pull up feet from the ground, wings spread wide as I lower my hind legs.

I feel the hope rise in my chest as I extend my legs talons from them. 'Almost there.

"Pull up!" My inner dragon bellows out.

Zeriel suddenly appears from in front of me and round house kicks me in the neck. I'm thrown off course and sail through the air, my back hitting the roof of the house with a thunderous crash, the roof partially caving in under my weight.

"Just come with me, together we can burn the world and make it what I want it to be." She walks towards me, hand out stretched, sword poised over her head to launch it at me if I attempted to attack.

"It'll be a rainy day in Hell when that happens." My flaming body suddenly forms above Zeriel, fire pooling together from then air, and lands on top of her stabbing her through the chest with a single talon, biting a wing and try to pry it from Zeriel's body. In her blazing mouth I feel white hot pain, biting harder I breath fire in my mouth while holding the obsidian wing.

She screams underneath my inner dragon, throwing her arm back, tossing her off. Landing a few yard away on my wing hard, she uses the momentum to roll onto her talons and charge her once more on her hind legs, breathing fire once more.

She jumps over the stream with her sword raised and dives at my other half. She leaps to the side balancing on her forelegs and swings her tail forward, body following as I attempt to smack her with the broad side.

She misses by inches as Zeriel beats her wings once and comes at me with her shield up. Without pause I roar head-butting the shield, a loud ping reverberates in my ears, I shake my head quickly and roll forward with my tail raised and hit the broad side of the shield, sending them both flying. "Go!" My flaming body turns to look at me, a snarl plastered on my face.

"Woo! Now that's using your head!" I grin and rush to my parent's side at the sound of Teresa's voice, laying flat on my belly as they clambered onto my back. 'Let's get out of here.' As I stand a mass of darkness forms in front of us, Zeriel exiting it and landing on the ground lightly, bow raised and aimed at us.

"This is the most fun I've had in a while. I changed my mind, I won't kill you I'll just tame you and the wicked beast within you." She grins as she begins to pull the string back.

My inner dragon begins pooling energy through our connection, her body glowing brightly in the early morning light. Using her whole body she condenses the fire within and pulls the air around us to her, the ground trembles as she digs her talons in, calling to the heat from the belly of the earth.

A wave of fire leaves the flaming dragon and scorches everything it touches, but flows past me and my parents harmlessly and slams into Zeriel who thrust her sword into the ground to keep from being blown back, slowly being pushed back despite her sword half way in the soil. I feel the tremors increase with intensity as I give the fire one last command, aimed at Zeriel. "Show her what dragons are made of!"

My flaming dragon body opens her jaws, releasing a torrent of fire, the heat cutting through the earth as it travels at Zeriel as fast as a diving falcon, creating a depression in its wake. I dodge with my parents on my back and run towards the tree line, pumping my wings with each lung.

"Rickashay!" Zeriel bellows, throwing the shield down into the earth, the fire collides and there is a blinding light, then a thunderous crash seconds later, the resulting shock wave spreading over the property.

I try to leap and fly away once more but the weight of my parents is too great. I fold my wings back over my parents as the wave descends upon me head on, sending me careening through the air, with a hard thump I fall on my flank hard.

I lay dazed and motionless except for my tender breathing as I try to collect myself, through the bond with my inner dragon I open her eyes and survey the area. The cabin is in flames and completely blown apart, the better part of the southern tree line on fire, and a large crater where Zeriel had been standing is all that remains.

I look frantically for my parents when I notice I don't feel them on my back anymore. Looking in my direction I freeze when I see the both of them laying in the charred earth, flames licking them eagerly.

I roar in panic and demand the flames get off them, to which the flames slide off their body and into the soil eagerly at my command. "No... Dad Mom!" I propel myself towards them, instantaneously black metal beams suddenly sprout from the earth and lock around me, holding me hostage. I try to deform but the beam keeps my body intact.

The metal bends like rope and wraps around her snout, neck, legs, wings, and tail. Straining harder against the metal, I trying to get to my parents to no avail. I open my actual eyes and inches from my snout is black armored boots.

"Gotcha dragon," her black dead eyes lock with mine, I freeze unable to anything else but look back. My breaths hitching as the panic sets in.

I hear a far off roar and raise my head and come face to snout Ferocity's expressionless eyes, our renewed bond told me she wasn't as expressionless as she seemed. "So that's what happened to them."

She blinked once, the sound of her scales sliding over each other as she looked away, shame filling her being and loss coating her heart. "He can't hear what we say when we're focused on each other. I don't want him to know the rest of what happened, so I'm giving control back to you, but I wanted you to understand where you...we, I come from. We've experienced real struggles, things no one but I will understand. I'm not here to fight you or make your life harder, you're a dragon accept that and move forward and I might start to respect you," she growls the last part between partially parted jaws.

She moved out of the way of the door and returned to the depression in the floor, curling into a ball her body rose and returned to the flame mass form.

I look at her evenly. "Will you show me the rest of what happened?" I whispered over my breaking heart.

"Once we get out of here, I don't want him trying to pry it from you, and giving you control will end the memory, its the only way I can defy him right now," at that the mass revealed a flaming eye that winked at me.

Before I can respond gravity goes rouge and pulls me backwards through the doorway, slamming shut as I fly backwards farther from my focal point.

I lift my head and take a lungful of air, my heart racing and body trembling, stuck in fight or flight mode as I blindly stand and thrash around, cold hands abruptly grip my shoulders as David's face comes into view.

"Calm down, everything is fine Ferocity! It's me, shhh, calm down it's alright." She cooed softly, pulling me to his chest. "You're safe," he breathed into my hair.

I look up at him bewildered as the memories begin flooding in, and I sink to the floor sobbing, not caring who sees my anguish. 'They're dead, the only people to ever love me and they're dead.' My tear flow freely as my wails grow, the depth of my loss sinking in. 'How could I forget? Why would I ever forget that? Mommy... daddy... please don't be gone. Please be here when I open my eyes.' I open them to a world of disappointment.

David's golden reptilian eyes meet my puffy purple eyes. "Ferocity... I'm sorry. I didn't want to hurt you.. I just..." his hushed tone cuts through my pain and I truly see him for the first time and feel the bond, weak as it is stir at his words and the sadness in his eyes. I feel compelled to be in his arms, give myself freely to him, until I feel a shift from within.

Deep in my being I feel my inferno snarl at him. 'You may be my mate, but I will make sure you reap what you have sown on this day, on my honor as a dragon,' she growls between clenched fangs.

My eyes become steely as I thrust my emotions below the surface and look evenly into David's eyes, pouring my contempt into our bond, "Satisfied now?!" I seethe.
