Dragon has the Win (unedited)
I clutch Axel's fur in my talons, trying to make myself invisible in his fur. The crowd of wolves, lycans, and humans alike part as he makes his way to this territories pack house. However, they don't stop the looks and whispers they give to each other as they get a look at me. The famous dragon it seems. So far I've gathered there aren't any other dragons, maybe I'm the only one to ever exist.
I hop off Axel back as we approach the door to the pack house. This one is a little larger than the one in Axel's territory, and it has more of a stone woodsy look to it from the outside, but still modern. He keeps walking, finding a place out of my sight to shift back to his human form.
I watch as groups of wolves and humans alike come closer to get a better look at me. I raise my frills and flicks my purple tail back and forth in my aggravation. One group, a bunch of teenagers by the look, get particularly close. One boy reaches to touch my snout. I stop flicking my tail and eye his with my frills partially raised and my ears laid flat against my head. Just as he's about to reach me Axel grasp his shoulder. He has on his familiar combination of white t-shirt and black cargo pants, with no shoes. Come to think of it most of everyone here isn't wearing shoes.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you."
"Why?" He jerks his shoulder out of Axel grasp. "I want to touch it, you can but I can't?"
"Yeah pup, I can. She doesn't trust others much, that and if she gets anymore stressed she might end up in a rage for a week. That and if anyone upsets here they have to deal with me." Axel leaned in a bit closer. "So try me if you want to."
As he takes a step back I jump into Axel's arms. Without another word he turns and enters the pack house. He seems to know where he is going as I curl my tail around his arm and hide my face in the crook of his arm, taking time to slow my racing heart. The sound of his walking almost puts me to sleep before I hear a door open and smell others in the room.
I lift my head to see we're in a large well furnished room. The walls are decorated with pictures and awards of various things I don't particularly care about at the moment. I stick my tongue out to taste the air. I shake my snout at the taste, it's very strong.
Axel stops at the desk at the back wall, setting me on top of it before he takes a seat behind me. To Axel's right is a woman I've never, but she smells like him and doesn't at the same time. Next to her is Troy, and at his right is another large man at the head of the desk. His brown hair is frizzy and his expression a bit more gentle than when I first met Troy. To his right are two women, one is the one they called Alpha Kasey. The other woman is rather petite, with black hair with a blond streak in it.
Around the table they sit silently all looking at me. I ruffle my wings and self consciously rub my frills down with my tail to look presentable, and puff my chest out a bit.
"Hello dragon. My name is Alpha Derek, you're at the Hale pack house. How are you? I've been informed you're very intelligent." At that I stick my chest out a little more and stretch a wing out. "It seems the children's books were right, dragons do like flattery." Beside him the woman speaks.
"And I'm alpha Victoria."
"All girl like flattery sweetheart." The woman from outside speaks, and I tilt my head over at her. She waves at me sweetly. "Hi, I'm Alpha Kasey. You saw me outside, are you feeling ok little one?"
I groan and lift my wing to reveal the bite mark I had been hiding. Axel growls under his breath and lifts my wing a bit higher to see the damage. I snaked my head around to sniff the wound, then I turn my snout away from the awful smell.
"It's really fresh. Some stupid tick bit her. Alpha Derek do you have a first aid kit?" Derek nodded and pointed towards a set of cabinets across the room. Axel throws the chair back in his aggravation, causing me to cover myself with my wings.
"So-" I turn my attention back to Alpha Derek, "-I got the run down from Alpha Troy here. You're from Chicago, lived by yourself for many years. In all that time you had no idea what so ever that you're a.." He gestures at me nervously. I shake my head in return.
"In that time you never had vampires bothering you until now?" I shake my head. "So tell me, did you know anything about the supernatural community until now?" I shake my head vigorously. "Do you have any possible knowledge that would explain how you're a dragon?" Before I can shake my head there is a loud knocking on the door.
Axel opens it quickly, taking in the form shielded from me with his body for a moment before he bows his head and steps aside. An older woman, maybe in her forties with fading dirty blond hair with a perfect tan strides into the room. "I can answer that." She stops to stand beside me and admire me. I curl my lip slightly at her proximity but Axel quickly lifts me up and lays me onto my side, tending to my wound.
"Sasha long time no see, how is your grandmother?" Troy ask politely.
"She's fine, she and your elder are about to meet right now. They'll be waiting back at your pack actually to inspect this little cutie. She kept rambling on about how the stories were true and sent me here to tell you."
"Why not come and tell us here?" Derek replies in a monotone.
"She said because it's best to show you in an area the lizard feels comfortable." At that I leap onto my feet and turn over my tail to stand onto my hind legs, standing eye to eye with her and I growl deep in my chest, lashing my tail.
You tried it.
"Yeah.. she doesn't like being called a lizard. Just call her a dragon, best recommendation I can give you." Axel pulls me back gently but I jerk out of his hands.
"I didn't realize it was intelligent like that... even the best wolves don't understand much language during the first few shifts." Axel lifts me off my feet to my displeasure, rubbing my frills and laying me back on my side.
"She, notice I said she, retains intelligence during shifts. But she seems to have a similar rage the lycans possess."
"So she has a blood lust?" She reaches out to touch my tail but I curl it towards me and huff.
Fuck you.
"To a degree yes, but I wouldn't call it the same, it seems more defensive than offensive. Welp the wound is covered. I don't know if I wrapped it the best possible way but it'll hold until a vet can take a look at her." I look around the room curiously, before I spot a mug full of pencils and an iPad. I roll onto my feet and hop off the table. Ignoring Axel's call I leap onto the desk, grab a few pencils in my hand and the iPad in the over. I look down at the floor then the objects in my hand then back at the floor.
Well that was smart. Before I attempt to jump down Axel picks me up and brings me back to the table. I toss the pencils down and set the iPad down gently. I look around the table anxiously as the idea filters down into my limps. I pick up a pencil but hold it awkwardly in my talons. Snorting I pluck the eraser off and twist it onto the tip of my talon.
I receive the desired affect as I'm able to use the touch screen. I look over my wing at Axel with a smug grin as I go into the notepad app. Twisting my head to crack my neck I tap the screen to bring up the keyboard and begin typing.
'First of all, I'm a dragon not a lizard, respect my authority. Second I'm a girl. Third I had no idea about vampires or giant mutant dogs or anything. Fourth I had no idea to any degree I'm a dragon, sure I felt super hot some times and sure I could hear and smell things a bit better than most people but that didn't spell out the word dragon or supernatural in my head. Now what the fuck' Axel clears his throat and takes the iPad from me and erases 'fuck'.
You suck bro. I take the iPad back and groan before resuming my typing.
'What is this with alpha this and alpha that? You act like an actual wolf pack? And that's a lycan?"
"Yes, for the most part. But we're different. Unlike actual wolves we're a much larger pack, and we are different than wolves in a lot of ways other than looks. I'm alpha as well at my mate and wife Alpha Kasey. And a lycan is another word for werewolf but we use it to refer to the form where we can stand on two legs and look like a mixture between human and wolf." Derek answers easily. Beside him Alpha Kasey has an almost regal look to her posture, it annoys me to hell and back.
Someone thinks they're important.
'I'm hungry.' I shake my scales out as I feel my nervous energy building. 'I want to go back to my room, can we?' I turn and look up at Axel then tentatively climb onto his shoulders and drape myself across them, relaxing finally.
"Well I think she is done with all the excitement for the day, right?" I nod and look at the walls containing me and puff my scales up before pointing at the iPad. Axel picks it up quickly and holds it within my reach.
'I feel closed in, it makes my scales feel tight.' He nods quickly.
"She's feeling closed in. Makes sense, even wolves get nervous indoors at times. Are we going back to the compound now Troy?"
"Yes, lets all go so we can speak to the elders and finally get some answers to this predicament." Axel bows his head and briskly walks out the door. I can barely contain myself as we head outside.Once we get out the doors I slide down his back and land on my feet, swishing my tail waiting for him to shift into his wolf form. Once he headed around the corner and I heard the familiar cracking in the air I trotted forward down the gravel path into the lush field of green in front of me.
I head him approaching behind me and I notice a black band around his back leg holding clothes to his leg.
So that's how he keeps appearing with clothes.
I hang back momentarily to smell his clothes before weaving in and out of his legs playfully. He tries not to step on me as I make a game out of running past his paws before they touch the ground. Soon the grass gets higher and almost completely swallows me whole, and I make an effort to leap clear of it to see where I'm going every few feet.
I leap and see a line of wolves and lycans alike watching me and Axel. I drop to the ground and press myself into the grass. He notices and stops to look at me, throwing his head back as if telling me to follow him. I stay motionless until he bends down to pick me up in his mouth and continues walking. I curl my tail up to my belly and look around. Slightly in front of Axel to his left I see Troy in his familiar Red and white wolf form, walking beside him is a blue and grey wolf around his size, and behind him are two lycans walking on all fours as well.
I stick my tongue out and get the faint scent of alphas Derek, Kasey, and Victoria. As we get closer to the line of wolves and lycans I reach into Axel's chest fur and climb up his neck, as he lets me go I settle to perch on his back.
I feel less nervous of the others on his back. I paw his ears curiously and he flicks it out of my hand. I do it again and he huffs at me. Finding a new game I gently hold his ears in my hand and tug them back and forth as if I was whipping a horses reins. At that he trotted forward a little faster.
Feeling the wind brush against my frills I spread my wings slightly, feeling something I couldn't place. A few lycans from the line up followed my group as we walked past and Troy picked up the pace to a brisk jog.
My frills flowing in the wind I climbed more onto Axel's head and spread them more, flapping them experimentally. I bunched my legs underneath myself before I launched myself in the air flapping my wings slowly. I drop unto Axel's back hard and shake my scales out once more. He looks back as I spreads my wings wider and balance between his shoulder blades. Narrowing my eyes and preparing myself as he's about to clear the steep hill we're on.
Just before we're at the top I launch myself skyward once more, furiously flapping my wings, fighting to stay airborne. I manage to catch the wind in my leathery and scaly sail and rise higher. My chest loses the tight uncomfortable feeling as I relax.
So I want to fly.. That is until I notice how high I am. I falter and close my wings, dropping faster than I would have expected. I snap my wings open again and glide past Axel.
He speeds up as I close in on the ground. Flapping my wings I can't force myself to rise in the air. Suddenly Axel is underneath me. I dip my chest forward and get a face full of fur as I crash onto his back.
He looks over his shoulder with an annoyed look at me. I smile back sheepishly.
Well that was fun wouldn't you say?
No I wouldn't.
I leap backwards almost sliding off his back.
Axel?!
Yes, its me dragon.
Jesus H. Christ, how are you doing that?
I'm not you are, and you're broadcasting to everyone around you actually. I'm impressed, I've only known vampires to be able to do that, and even then they're usually the older generation.
Axel ! Did you see me up there?
Yes, next time try not to scare me to death. Why didn't you pull up before you smacked your face into the ground?
I tried, couldn't do it.
Hmm I assumed dragons know how to fly after they're born.
I snort and cuff his ear. How would I know how to do that if I never saw anything else fly or tried before?
I thought you were flying back there with the vampires.
I stop short, thinking. No, I think I can get some height but I think the most I have at the moment is gliding, and even that is hard. Ya know I've always loved to watch the sky. Wonder what it's like up there. I sit back on his back lightly and watch a bird fly past, trying to watch their wing movements. But I feel heavy, it takes a lot to get up there, its even harder to stay.
Hmm sounds like you need practice then.
Yeah, ya know in the grand scheme of things I think I'm taking everything well don't you?
Very well, I would have been shit my pants dragon.
Ya know you don't have to keep calling me dragon. Back at my old home I liked to call myself Ghost. I puff my my scales out proudly.
I started calling you Spit Fire actually.
I sit back and flick my tail tip. I like it, I shall accept that and Ghost as my name. Put it on an I.D. if you want, but that's my name. I have decided.
You can't have a name like that.
Why not? I could have legally changed my name to anything I want, and I choose those two. It's very dragon like in my opinion, and since I am a dragon I have hence for decided to embrace all forms of dragon embodiment.. whatever that may be. Since it's just me..
You're not all alone, you've got me at least. Axel says in a monotone.
I grin and squeeze his ear, noticing we're crossing the road. That was fast.
Yes, I am fast aren't I. I haven't even run as fast as I possible can with you yet. Don't want to send you flying off.
Cockiness isn't attractive.
Good thing that's not what I was trying to do then right?
I sneer at him and switch my focus to the woods around me when a wave of wolf scent passes my nose, but this smells more familiar. Comforting even.
Why does this side smell different than the other side where the dog smell was?
One, don't call a wolf a dog unless you want to fight, two that's how our pack smells. I'm sure you noticed that same smell on me right?
Yes.
Well there you go, I imagine the other pack's scent wasn't pleasant to you at all was it?
No, not one bit.
Well that's because you're used to this pack. If you remember Troy accepted you, so that could be a reason as well. I'm not sure if dragons have 'packs' or anything like that but we'll see.
I nod and take the information in as the sounds of paws crushing leaves and moving through foliage plays all around me.
Before I know it our group breaks through the tree line and off in the distance I'm looking at most of the property from atop the hill we're on. The building most close to us looks to be a community center, with the hospital far off to the left of it. Within that area resembles a small town with little shops and buildings of all sorts. Across the field to my right is the large cement building I was in with more houses and buildings behind that.
Most of this is the compound, but there is a little more across the opposite tree line. Where the hospital is, is where the humans we have taken into our pack life, among more docile wolves. To the right is where the lycans live. Towards the middle past that tree line is the middle of the den, where wolves, lycans, and humans inter mingle. A lot of the mates live in that area.
How big is the den?
Maybe a mile or two, we need a lot of room. Eventually once everything is settled I'll show you the whole territory.
Axel turns his head as if he heard something as he glances at Troy, after a moment he nods his head and we set off down the hill. I can't resist the urge as I jump out from Axel's back to glide down the hill. He runs ahead to stay close to me in case I drop to the ground. I flap my wings tentatively, then switch my focus to the feeling of gliding.
I let my legs swing underneath me, feeling more comfortable that way. I try leaning on my right and almost flip onto my back, before I swing my tail in the opposite direction, stabilizing myself. I lower my frills and my balance instantly leaves me, causing me to drop greatly and almost plot myself onto Axel's back again.
I shake my frills out and feel my balance return. Before I know it the bottom of the hill is closing in. Thinking back to all the movies I ever saw I stick my hind legs out, but manage to flip myself over my tail.
As the ground races to meet my face Axel catches me out of the air, and I lay limply upside down in his jaws as I give him a sheepish grin.
Couldn't help myself. He growls around my lower torso, before turning his head. I lift my head and turn it over to look at the direction he is in, and I see a group of four lycans and five wolves approach us. Leading the group is an older looking wolf and lycan.
The wolf is blond with streaks of white in it's fur, while the lycan is grey with white patches. Looking at them I can tell they used to have beautiful lustrous fur, which they still do now. Just in a different way that the youth beside them. They stop almost sliding to me and Axel.
As one, both the wolf and lycan shift together. My cheeks heat up and I turn my face to look away at their nude bodies. After a moment gently hands lift me out of Axel's mouth and flip me over. I come face to face with the two women. They don't look old and ancient, relatively young looking for their possible ages actually. One woman had even brown skin with her hair in twist, while the other had slightly lighter skin with lightly curly hair running a little past her shoulders.
"The stories were true. I told you!" She jumped with me in her arms. I growled and wiggled out of her fingers and ran to hide under Axel, looking up at them nervously.
So old people really do like to grab your face... the stories were true.
"Well now young lady, looks like you're pretty good at broadcasting, heard that one loud and clear! And I'm not that old, but I'm old too. Bet you can say you never heard a woman admit she is old right?"
Can't say I have.
"That's because I still look good."
Define 'look good' for me. I roll my eyes sarcastically.
"Feisty, just like all baby dragons. Axel it seems like your wolf and this dragon connect very well if she depends on you to protect her. Oh yes we have a lot to talk about. And for you, young one, my name is April, and this ray of sun shine beside me is May. But before we sit down and talk I'll let you know you aren't the only dragon in history. In fact there are thousands out still alive today."
I walked out from under Axel and folded my wings and looked up at his wide eyes.
Holy Shit.
