Chapter 13: The Longing

Anna didn't wait for Leo and quickly walked ahead of him but she kept glancing at him back and forth. And as she reached the jeep, she turned to look at him.

"Give me the key, I'll drive," Anna said.

"No! I'm driving." He deadpanned and sat on the driver's seat. Anna scowled at his back before seating on the passenger seat. "Put on your seatbelt."

"I don't want to." she snapped. Leo sighed heavily before bending down and reaching for her seatbelt. Anna gasped in shocked and looked at him. After doing her seatbelt, he tilted his head and looked at her; their lips were just a centimetre apart. His eyes involuntarily stared at her lips while Anna's heart was about to explode any minute. Gulping down hard, he quickly moved away from her and without wasting a second, he started the engine and drove off.

There was an awkward silence between them for some minutes before Leo spoke out first.

"You knocked me down last night." He side glanced at her and said with a tad of amusement on his voice. Anna snapped her head towards him and furrowed her eyebrows.

"You remember!"

"I never forget what I do—" he deadpanned. "—even when I'm drunk." He added. And suddenly he slowed down the ride and parked the car jeep at one side.

"What happened? Why did you stop?" Anna asked curiously. Leo didn't answer and simply leaned down closer to her. She quickly jerked back and her hands automatically came to cross over her chest like a shield.

"Don't worry; I'm not gonna rape you." He smirked beautifully and rested his one hand over the top of the passenger's seat. "I just wanted to say that I'm sorry for whatever happened last night." He said sincerely and stared straight in her eyes. "Even for the things, I did to you while I was drunk." Anna was blushing shades of redness on her cheeks as she was reminded about last night moments and gulped harder.

"You seriously remember everything!" She exclaimed feeling regretted.

"Yes, unlike you!" he deadpanned. "You don't remember a thing about what you do when you're drunk." He added and move back to his seat. Anna creased her eyebrows in confusion and straightened up on her seat. "And I mean every word I said," he held tightly on the stirring wheel and looked at her expectantly. Anna slowly drifted her eyes and gulped as sadness took over her.

"Can we just go?" she said quietly, not looking at him.

"Going!" he said hitting on the gas and drove off.

After an hour of a long drive, they finally reached their destination and got off from the jeep. "The market's far than expected," Leo said glancing at the market.

"Heard that you knew every corner of California," Anna mocked at him sarcastically. Leo glanced at her before moving towards the florist shop and Anna followed him behind.

"Hello! Handsome, what kind of flower would you like for your pretty girl here?" the florist lady asked when she saw Leo and Anna approaching towards her.

"Oh no, ma'am, we're here to take the flowers. Maria sent us." Anna informed giving her a sweet smiled. Leo bit back a smile looking at her. He has been longing to see that smile on her from the day they met at the hospital but somehow he always ended up making her cry.

"Mariana Gustavo!" Anna nodded at her. "The flowers are ready."

It took half an hour to loaded the jeep with bunches of flowers. Anna glanced around and wanders off on her own.

"Where are you going?" Leo asked.

"None of your business!" she said over her shoulder. There was not a chance that he'll be letting her go on her own. He followed her closely.

Anna quickly ran inside the accessories store and glances around, admiring the little but beautiful objects. He silently stood outside the store and stared at her.

"You really like cute little things, don't you?" Leo whispered to himself as he tenderly stared at her through the glass.

Anna, who was busy checking out the necklaces drifted her eyes and saw him outside the store through the window pane and unknowingly gave him a beautiful smile. Leo was taken aback and his heart started to pound faster. She came out of the store and stood in front of him.

"Let's go!" he gestured her to follow him. But just as he turned around, he saw a group of men in black coming towards him. "Boltons!" he cursed and quickly took Anna's hand and ran away from there.

"What happened? Why are we running? Who are they?" Anna asked being dragged away by him, looking back at the men coming after them.

"You're not the only one who wants me dead!" Leo said sarcastically.

"It's rare to see a Don running away from his enemy." Anna chuckled and mocked at him. Leo abruptly stopped at his track and came face to face with her.

"I can kill all of them right away but I can't guarantee the innocent's life around. What do you say? Shall I run or fight?"

"Run!" Anna said and this time she took his hand and dragged him along with her. They made out on the other side of the market and kept running. Anna screamed shortly when bullets were being shots towards them. Leo's arms came around her, shielding her as they kept running. Suddenly they came to an abrupt stopped, they were trapped, there was a cliff in front of them and as they turned back to changed the direction, they were late; they were already grounded by Boltons' men.

Anna quickly embraced Leo into a tight hugged and panted under his chest in fear. She has a fear of heights. Leo hugged her back and looked around for an escape.

"Shameless! You rejected my sister's proposal and now here you are with a woman." Brent Bolton, the second son of the Don of Bolton, Bennet and brother of Tatiana Bolton, hissed and pointed the gun at him. "You don't know how much I want to kill you but I can't. My sister wants you alive; she's going to make you marry her no matter what."

"But I have to say, you've got a beautiful one there," Brent said as he laid his eyes towards Anna. "Bring them!" he ordered his men.

Leo quickly pulled Anna to face him and cupped her both cheeks. "Can you swim?" he asked.

"What do you mean?" Anna panted out.

"We have to jump." He said.

"No, no, no Leo. I can't, I'm afraid of heights." She panted out in fear and she dreadfully sides glance towards the cliff.

"Look at me." He said and faced her towards him. "I'm never gonna let anything happen to you, trust me. Don't worry, I'm here." He assured her and placed a kiss on her forehead. "On the count of three!" and Anna nodded at him. He saw the men approaching them. There's not a chance that he's going to let them touch his girl. "One, Jump!" and they jumped off the cliff and dive deep into the water. Anna screamed the hell out of her lungs as she jumped off the cliff.

"I'll get to you next time!" Brent growled as he glared down the cliff. There was no sign of them.

Leo pulled Anna out of the water and placed her by the shore. She was unconscious. He pressed on her chest to let the water out of her and gave her mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. After trying for the fourth time, Anna finally came back to sense and cough out the water from her inside. Leo gently rubbed on her back and sighed heavily.

"What happened to two and three?" She squealed in alarmed and slapped his bicep. Leo simply nudged on his bicep and chuckled at her. Both of them were all wet from head to toe and their mobile phones were dead as well. The sun has set already and dusk was taking place. Leo's eyes caught attention to her top that was transparent and can see through her black bikini. Anna saw him staring at her now transparent top and quickly covered it with her hands. He took off his wet coat and put it onto her.

"Will you be able to walk?" he asked and straightened up.

"Yes, I can." She snapped and quickly stood up from her place but unluckily she sprained her left leg. "Ouch!" her knee gave in and she bumped on the sand. Leo quickly curved down and gently took her leg on his hands.

"Don't move, just look at me!" he said but before Anna could say anything, he quickly twisted her leg. Anna jerked violently and cried in pain.

"Get on!" Leo offered her a piggy pack. Anna silently got onto him. His hands came under her thighs and jerked her up gently as he adjusted her on his back. Anna gasped out loud and both of her arms came around his neck. "Try not to strangle me." He teased to which she simply rolled her eyes over. By the time they were off the shore, it was already dark. Anna was already asleep upon him. He saw a small county at some distance and he strolled towards it.

"Where are we?" Anna cracked up looking at the new place right after she woke up.

"Don't know but we need to find a stay for tonight." He said softly. He got inside one of the hotels and placed Anna on the chair before moving towards the reception. Anna stared at him as he spoke to the person at the reception.

"What happened?" Anna asked when Leo came to her biting his lips.

"There's only one room available." He said scratching his forehead. But before he could continue saying, Anna interrupted.

"You're sleeping on the floor!"

Leo bit back a smile and looked down at her. "You don't have any problem sharing room with me!" he raised an eyebrow at her.

"It's not a new thing," Anna said looking away.

"Okay," Leo said and curved down. He lifted her up on his arms and strolled towards their room no. He placed her on the bed. "Stay here while I'll go and bring us some dry clothes."

"And where are you gonna get us dry clothes?" She asked.

"There's a store outside the hotel." He answered amusedly and strolled out of the room. After some minutes, Leo came with some clothes. He bought her a white t-shirt and a black pyjama and he bought himself the same. He locked their room door and strolled towards Anna. "Will you be able to change or do you need help?" he asked sincerely.

"I can change my own!" she snapped.

"I'll be changing in the bathroom, tell me when you're done changing," Leo said and strolled towards the bathroom.

"Don't you dare peek through the door?" Anna warned him.

"I won't," he said and closed the bathroom door. Anna tried to be as quick as she could in changing her clothes.

"You can come out now." She said but Leo didn't come out. "Leo!" she called and moved carefully towards the door. And as she opened the bathroom door, she saw Leo sitting by the door sleeping against the wall. He already fell asleep while waiting for her. A small smile escapes her lips, staring down at him. Then she curved down and sat next to him. "I'm sorry for making you wait." She said softly. Suddenly Leo shuffled and opened his eyes slowly.

"When did you get here?" Leo asked in wide eyes open.

"Ah—" she bites her lips thinking for an excuse. "I called you out but you didn't respond so I came to see what happen and suddenly felt pain on my legs and bumped down." She lied. Leo didn't believe her but he didn't say anything. He stood up from his place and curved down to pick her up.

"No, it's okay. I can walk myself." She rejected but he didn't listen and lifted her up on his arms. He placed her gently on the bed and put the blanket upon her.

"Sleep now, I have talked to Gideon. He and Maria will be here tomorrow morning to pick us up," he informed and strolled towards the couch.

Anna switched off the lamp beside her and closed her eyes. "Goodnight, Leo!" she said quietly but didn't receive any reply. She wanted to turn and look at him but she stopped herself from doing it. Then suddenly she felt the bed sinking down beside her, she quickly switched on the lamp and turned around only to come face to face with Leo.

"Leo!" she gasped out. "What're you doing?"

"I can't sleep there," he said.

"You can sleep here but don't you dare come near me." Anna's heart was pounding at the speed rate. Deep down, she wanted him next to her. Leo didn't listen to her. He placed his hand on her waist and pulled her closer to him making her back pressed on his torso. "Leo—" Anna was immediately shushed by him.

"Just let me sleep by your side tonight," he said softly staring at her bare side neck. Anna didn't say anything; her hand reached to switch off the lamp and closed her eyes. Leo went relaxed and took a deep breath before closing his eyes. Then he spoke silently, "Anna," and she hummed in reply. "Can we forget who we really are and stay like we were five years ago." She shut opened her eyes. "You don't know how much I've long for you these past five years. Every day was like torture for me." Anna silently listened to him as he softly spoke to her. "Can we escape from this reality and live happily together for once, Mio coure." His voice came out into a bare whisper but Anna heard it clearly.

"I love you so much!" his voice faded and soon he was drifted into his sleep, making soft snores. Anna carefully and silently turned to face him. She stared at his sleeping figure and moved closer, placing a soft peck on his lips.

"I love you too!" she whispered softly looking at him. "I wish we could stay like before but I'm afraid we can't, nothing is the same as it was five years ago," unshed tears formed on her eyes, "I'm sorry, Leo," She placed another but longing kiss on his lips before drifting into sleep.
