Prologue
The crisp coolness of the morning air greeted me as goosebumps rose along my skin, my breath coming out in wispy puffs as a grin spread across my face. Autumn was my favorite time of year and Halloween was right around the corner. The only thing keeping me warm was the mug that I was holding, steam rose from the top of it as I made my way over to a chair. Curling up on it I set my mug of hot chocolate off to the side and took in a deep breath. I felt alive, almost as if this was surreal and I was living a fantasy. Opening up the book I was currently reading while listening to the doves cooing in the trees above me, I began to flip through the pages until I came to the one I had left off at.
The silence was interrupted as I heard the screen door shut and the sound of footsteps coming towards me. The chair beside me shifted and I risked glancing up, seeing a mop of raven black curly hair that was disheveled. I smiled briefly as he focused his gaze on me with that early morning smile of his.
"Good morning love." He yawned in his morning voice, which never failed to make me smile no matter what kind of mood he was in.
"Good morning dear." I chimed happily as I began to read yet again, despite that he had rested his chin on my shoulder, reading along with me.
"What on earth are you reading?" He questioned as he turned his head to press a kiss against my neck, making my face flush with color.
"A romance novel." I stated simply as I used my free hand to run my fingers through his hair.
"I don't see how you can like those things so much when you're practically living one." He responded back, chuckling quietly.
I smiled and let out a laugh of my own before pausing, I was gonna miss this, I don't want him to leave. My bottom lip began to quiver as I thought about the upcoming week. He realized what was about to happen and stood up, holding me close to him as tears rolled down my face.
"No love please don't cry. I promise I will be back soon, it's only for a couple of months. I promise..." He tried soothing me, but it didn't help much.
"I don't want you to leave Vince, I really don't." I stated simply, gripping onto his shirt like it was my lifeline.
