Paintball
Rabbit's car was full, Future was in the front next to him, while Iz, Cheddar and Sol were all in the back. The problem was they were still yet to pick Tiffany up. He knew she was small, but even he know it wouldn't be right to squeeze her in the back with the guys.
"Hey, B, I got these new beats, man. You know how much I like your mum," Sol tapped Jimmy on his shoulder, causing his thoughts to stop. Jimmy turned and took the tape that Sol handed out to him.
"Shit, I really, really like your momma, Rabbit. But she did you no favour when she left you this car," the comment came after a short pause a Sol took in the vehicle he was in.
"Fuck you. Get out and walk," Jimmy joked as he shoved the tape in his pocket and proceded to turn around again, this time to flip his freind off. Which was followed by a ripple of laughter.
"Hey, man, at least the radio plays," he replied defensively, ''What's up with this whole East Coastl West Coast thing? We got to put Mo on the map.''
''Talking about the No1. Man, nobody even knows Detroit is the one,'' all of them in the car frowned at Cheddar's comment.
''You're from 810, fathead. We gotta make our own sound. Fuck everybody else,'' Future took a drag from the blunt in his hands before passing it over his shoulder to Cheddar who eagerly took it from him.
''Yeah, then we get a deal, go platinum, get cheesed out... and get all the bitches! All the hoes,'' Sol chipped in as he took the blunt from Cheddar.
Jimmy shook his head at the comments his friends were making as he drove around the corner and up Tiffany's street. She lived in the quietest neighbourhoods he'd ever known and it unsettled him a little because no street especially on a Saturday night was as silent as Tiffany's was. When he finally pulled up at the front of the house, he noticed all the lights were off, the only house on the row that was plunged in semi darkness. The only exception was the slight glare of white light peaking through the curtains in on the front window, which Jimmy guessed came from the TV.
''Yo man get in the back and let Tiff sit in the front,'' Rabbit spoke looking over at Future who had the blunt back in his mouth again.
''Why, she can just sit up front with me, we've done it before,'' Future reasoned shrugging his shoulders, which caused Jimmy to huff as he exited the car to knock on her door. He found there was going to be no point in arguing.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
''Dad, I'm going out remember,'' Tiffany remined her father as she sat in the armchair that sat vertical to the sofa he was on. She was already ready for the night and so she had slumped back in the chair to wait for the guys to pick her up.
''Can you not bear to be near me anymore. You were gone all day and now you're going out again tonight,'' he scoffed and Tiffany shifted uncomfortably as he took a long swing from the bottle in his hand. They hadn't spoken about the confrontation that had occurred earlier that morning and in all honesty she wanted nothing more than for it to be forgotten.
She had no idea what to say to him as he looked at her, his hazel eyes boring into her own. He lessoned his grip on the bottle in his hand and let it drop onto the floor, he'd finished it so nothing spilled and luckily it had dropped upright so it didn't smash on the hardwood floor.
''Dad...'' then for the second time that day a knock on the door stopped her from saying what she wanted. Instead of finishing she grabbed her bag stood up from the chair, grabbed her coat, slid it on and without a second glance walked out towards the door.
''That damm'd door won't stop you from talkin' to me forever,'' her father mumbled as he watched his daughter answer the door and leave with the white boy he only knew as Rabbit. ''Stupid name,'' he muttered to himself as he heard the door swing shut and the click as he daughter left.
Brian Charlton heaved himself of the old stained sofa and made his way to the front window. Through the net curtain he watched as he daughter strolled down the driveway with Rabbit. He had his hands in his pockets and he seemed to be talking to Tiffany in what Brian could see, a serious manner. He watched as she nodded her head along with him and his heart sunk a little when he saw a small smile grace across her lips. That was when he removed himself from the window to grab another bottle of beer from the fridge. He'd not seen her look that happy in a long time and it made him think that she was possibly better off without him. So as he sunk back down into the used sofa he realised he had a lot to think about and a choice. One that was perhaps going to ruin him, but possibly save her from knowing further down the line.
-------------------------------------------------------------
''Do you think I have a big head?'' That was the first thing Cheddar asked her the moment she entered the car and sat with Future.
''What?'' She mouthed over to Jimmy who just shrugged as he started the car up and pulled away from her house.
''Your heads fine Cheddar,'' she remarked and she didn't need to turn around know he probably had a grin pasted across his face. Although the question still confused her.
''I called him a fathead,'' Future whispered to her. The comment made her smile and a giggle escaped her mouth as she finally understood why she had been asked just a strange question from her friend.
''Why'd you bring that damn thing, man? Oh, man!'' Iz's comment made the three sat up front all turn around to see what he was on about.
Tiffany smirked as she saw the slick shape of a paintball gun, being pulled out from beside Sol, who had managed to tuck it inside his coat, which in turn had allowed him to smuggle it into the car. Sol grinned as Iz just sighed shaking his head in exasperation. Judging by her dreadlocked friends reaction, he didn't think Sol bringing the gun was the best idea.
''Shoot it,'' although it seemed Future was all for it.
However, even before Future had said the words, he had already begun to wind down the window and lean out the side of the car. Tiffany couldn't really see where he was aiming, but did hear the short as he fired and of course his shout as he manged to get the target he wanted.
''Pinkeye, bitch!''
''Let me see. Let me show you motherfuckers how to shoot something,'' Sol passed the gun up to the front of the car to Future.
Tiffany had to tuck herself out the way so Future could lean out the window with the gun. Which also meant him leaning over her and effectively squishing her in the process. She huffed as it took a while for him to get the gun steady and then there was the time it took for him to chose his target.
''Do it, do it,'' they all shouted out to him.
''Okay. Here we go.Here it is, here it is,'' Tiffany sighed as a few minutes went by and he still had shot at anything, which caused her to become more and more uncomfortable.
''Hurry the fuck up before I shot you with the damn thing.''
''Chill. I got it,'' all the guys cheered as it seemed Future had hit his target and yet again she didn't see what had been actually hit.
Finally he pulled away from the window and she was allowed the breath again. Just before he was about the pass the gun back to Sol, Jimmy pipped up from the wheel.
''Take the wheel, man,'' Tiffany's eyes widened Jimmy got Future to lay the gun in his lap, '' the gas, too,'' he added as he took the gun in his hands.
''I got the gas,'' Future shouted.
Tiffany's jaw dropped as she saw what Jimmy had decided to do. He got up from his seat and proceeded to sit dangerously on the edge of the car window, most of his body exposed to the outside of the car. She couldn't help but notice how he managed to balance perfectly still on the edge of the window as both of his hands held the gun ready to aim.
''Hey, Rabbit, get back in the car, man,'' Iz yelled, who was generally worried about the safety of his friend as he leant outside the car. There was also the fact that they'd be caught by the cops too.
''Hit the bus! Hit the bus!'' Sol shouted as they flew past a bus, but Jimmy didn't hit it. For a minuet Tiffany was confused, which then turned into shock as her friend fired the gun and a spot of orange paint splatted the side of a police car that had been sat in the ally. Then he fired again hitting the front window with a white sludge.
''Jesus,'' Tiffany mumbled as Jimmy sat back inside the car and resumed his spot at the wheel. There was a huge grin on his face as he was elated with what he had just accomplished.
''Man, give me my fucking gun,''By now the can had been passed back to Sol who didn't seem very happy, with what Jimmy had just done, ''What the fuck is wrong with you?'' There was silence for a second as Jimmy shrugged, until the blare of police sirens sounded from behind them.
''Oh, shit,'' Jimmy cursed as he glanced back to see the police car he had just hit pull out of the ally and start to follow them.
''Fuck!'' Iz exclaimed as he turned to look at Cheddar.
''Toss the weed, Cheddar!'' But Cheddar just looked at him as if Iz had grown to heads.
Tiffany sighed, turning around as much as she could and shouted at Cheddar, repeating what Iz had said, ''Toss the fucking weed!'' This time Cheddar listened and in panic threw the blunt out of the window next to Sol.
''What the fuck are you doing?'' Future shouted as the car radio suddenly cut out, along with all the car lights as they started to dim.
''The fucking car just died man,'' Jimmy exclaimed hitting the steering wheel in frustration, as he sat back in his seat.
''Oh, come on, man. I told you stupid-ass's not to be doing this shit,'' Iz groaned out as he his head in his hands.
Tiffany didn't find the situation all that bad because the car was still moving and Jimmy had manged to get it to turn down an empty dead end street, which had no street lamps at all. When the car finally came to a stop every single one of them sunk down as low as they could in their seats. Future had his arm around Tiffany hugging her to him as he tried to keep her out of sight.
''I don't want to go to jail,'' Cheddar mumbled form his position in the back.
''Shut the fuck up!'' Jimmy hissed, but he kept to the groups annoyance.
''I'm fucking serious. I get claustrophobic.''
''Cheddar shut it cause if we go to jail it'll be your fault,'' Tiffany snapped. Cheddar mumbled something, but nobody heard and nobody cared because he had finally gone quiet.
Every single person held their breath. Not one of them dared to move until they knew they were safe. To Tiffany it felt like hours, she badly wanted to open the door beside her and get out, but it was in no way a good idea in the situation. Then after in only a few seconds (real time) the flash of blue lights and whir of the police siren went speeding past behind them. All at once the six occupants of the car let out collective sighs of relief.
''You were scared!'' Sol spoke first and soon all the boys in the car began to point and jeer at each other.
Tiffany took the opportunity to open the car door and slide out. The cold night air hit her immediately and made her hug the coat she had on closer to herself. Taking in her surroundings she noticed more posters depicting images of her mother. This time she didn't stand and stare, nor did she walk over to them. Instead she turned back towards the car and jumped backwards slightly as Iz, Cheddar, Sol, Future and Jimmy all stood in front of the car looking directly at her.
''what've I done now,'' she called out to them throwing her arms up in exasperation. Each one of them reacted in the same way, shaking their heads and turning away from her. She grinned as they got the clear message that she didn't want to talk about it.
---------------------------------------------------------
''Iz,'' Tiffany called out to the man as he stood seemingly in a world of his own as he stared up at an old run down house that stood in the distance.
''Do you know how many abandoned buildings we have in Detroit?'' He suddenly stated turning around to face all of them again, '' How can you have pride in your neighbourhood... with shit like that next door? Does the city tear them down? No they're too busy building casinos and taking money from people.'' Tiffany frowned squinting her eyes to see of she could get a better look at the building, it defiantly had been abandoned for a while, but Iz was right the city didn't care about the side of town they were in and probably never would.
''Shut your preaching ass up,'' Sol pipped up as he leant against a graffiti covered wall, his attention focused on rolling the new joint in his hand, which would replace the old one Cheddar had chucked out the window in his panic ''Nobody cares about that shit,'' he added.
''Did you care when the crackhead raped that girl? You think it would've happened without an abandoned house?'' Iz's comment prompted Tiffany to turn her head in Sol's direction and raise an eyebrow at him signalling that Iz had a point.
''They caught him, right?'' Cheddar's voice was a little shaky as he asked the question and Tiffany put her arm around his shoulders to reassure him.
''Yeah. Dumb motherfucker went back to the house. How stupid could you be,'' Future answered for Iz as he took his lighter out giving it to Sol so he could light the new blunt.
''What's happening under that hood?'' Sol shouted impatiently over to Rabbit who had the hood popped open as he tried to get the car working again.
''It's a just a short. Chill out,'' Jimmy hollered back.
''Need any help?'' Tiffany approached, leaving the guys behind to talk about stuff she wasn't really interested in.
''Er... yeah you could try and start it up when I tell ya,'' he replied standing up straight from his position bent over the hood as he delved inside his pocket to pull out the keys and handed them out to her. She took them from him with a smile and slipped inside the car so she was behind the wheel.
''Jimmy,'' she paused to take a deep breath in, ''why'd you break up with Jeanene?'' He stopped what he was doing and looked through the front window to look straight into her eyes.
''Said she was pregnant,'' she opened her mouth to speak, but he put his hand up to stop her ,''She lied Tiff, she ain't. So if she lies about shit like that, it made me think what else she'd lied to me about. You know?''
She nodded. A silence fell over the two of them as Jimmy focused on trying to get the short sorted. Tiffany sat slumped in the chair one of her nails tapping the steering wheel as she subconsciously held onto it. Memories floated around inside her head, memories of when she first met Jimmy, when he introduced her to the gang. She tried to hold onto it, she wanted her mind to take her back, back to that moment that showed her maybe, just maybe how life wasn't so bad. But before she could grip onto it a flash of her brother in handcuffs being loaded into the back of a police car hung in front of the happy memory. Shaking her head she got rid of the image and instead glanced out the side window to see the other four still talking and passing the recently lit blunt around.
''I think Jimmy's mum's trying to kill him,'' she just about heard the voice of Iz.
''Yeah, she's so goddamn fine, she could kill me,'' she rolled her eyes as she heard Sol's voice float across the quiet ally.
''Don't be saying shit about my mum or my fucking car, man,'' Jimmy shouted out over to them and Tiffany jumped a little at the suddenness of his voice, ''I hear everything,'' he added before slamming the hood closed and nodding for Tiffany to start the car up.
''B-Rabbit!'' Cheddar yelled out a big grin appearing on his face as they all moved over to get back in the car.
As Jimmy opened the door, Tiffany moved to get out, but he stooped her.
''Yo don't. Just move up a little,'' slightly shocked she nodded and moved over allowing him to sit down so he was back behind the wheel. As the car started she rested her head against his shoulder, causing a ghost of a smile to appear on his lips for a second before it was gone and the group were on the move again.
This was a lot longer than I had intended it to be. Not sure if that's good or bad to be honest. Anyway thanks for the reads and votes so far :)
