Chapter One

I glared at the wall. Stupid wall.

I fell onto my back and glared at the ceiling. Stupid ceiling.

I rolled off my bed and landed on the floor. Stupid floor.

I sat up and glared at the door. Stupid door. Stupid house. Stupid dad leaving stupid Mum. Stupid life.

"Darcy!" Mum called from the kitchen.

I stomped down the hall and sat down on a stool at the kitchen island.

Mum looked at me and sighed. "You need to get your uniform on, honey, the bus will be here in a minute."

"Don't wanna go to school," I mumbled.

"I know."

I got off my stool and grumped my way back down the hall.

Stupid uniform. Stupid new school.

Once I'd gotten dressed I went back to the kitchen, and had just sat down again when the bus pulled up outside.

Mum raised an eyebrow at me.

"I'm scared," I whispered.

She smiled softly and wrapped her arms around me. "I know you are," she said. "But you're also courageous, and I know you'll stun them all with your amazingness."

"I don't want new friends," I mumbled into her fluffy cardigan.

She stroked my hair. "I know, and it's okay that's what you're feeling. I miss them too, but we have to push forward. It'll be a struggle at first, but we'll get there."

I look up at her. "I love you Mum."

"I love you too." She smiles.

Then she shoved my backpack at me and said, "go! Go! You'll be late!"

I grinned and gave her a quick hug before running outside. My smile slowly fell as I assessed the bus full of kids.

I slowly walked up the steps, smiling hesitantly at the driver. I glanced around at all the students, meeting a few hostile glares, a few friendly faces, and a whole bunch of bent heads, either staring at their phones or whispering to each other.

One girl with straight black hair picked up her bag and shoved herself in between two of her friends, leaving a double seat for me.

I sank down on it, giving her a grateful look.

But as soon as the bus started it lurched to a stop.

The others in the bus groaned and I looked to see a girl with short blonde hair and a purple backpack sprinting toward the bus.

"Wait!" she yelled. "Please wait!"

She ran up to the door and hauled herself in. She plumped down next to me as the bus drove off and sighed loudly. "Man, great start to the term, right?" she said loudly, grinning around the bus, lifting her hands like a rockstar.

A cheer mixed with laughter team through the teens.

"Same as the start to every other term, Ally," said the girl who'd given her seat to me.

She turned to me and gave me a stunning smile. "Hi!"she said.

All I could do was smile weakly.

She laughed. "Guess I've made a good impression on the new girl, huh? I'm Alessia, but you can call me Ally."

A real grin broke through on my face. "Yeah, you've made a great impression. I'm Darcy."

Ally jumped up, stumbling slightly at the movement of the bus. "EVERYONE!" She yelled. "THIS IS DARCY! SHE'S-" she looked down at me questioningly.

"Sixteen," I said.

"SIXTEEN! AND SHE LIKES-" she looks at me again.

"Music."

"WE GOT OURSELVES A MUSICIAN YOU GUYS!"

"Sit down, Alessia!" the driver yelled.

She sits back down next to me and grins again.

"Wow. I've never been introduced so...vibrantly before," I say, giggling a little.

"I like you," she says. "Do you wanna join our group? You look a little lost."

"Who does this group consists of?" I ask warily.

"Well, there's me, Lola over there," she indicated the girl who gave me her seat. " June-" she pointed to a girl with glasses and intricately braided hair. "And good ol' Jonty and Tennyson who are back there somewhere." She waved vaguely in the direction of the back of the bus. "Tennyson's my twin and he's a jerk but I love him."

"What-what do you normally do?" I asked.

"Well-wait, what year are you in?"

"Eleven."

"Oh, all of our group is too, but only you and June are sixteen the rest of us are seventeen. Can I see your schedule?" Without waiting for an answer she grabbed my backpack and rummaged through it.

"Hey!" I grabbed it back off her, laughing. I pulled out my schedule and gave it to her. "Wait for an answer!"

She scoffed as she ran her eyes ever my schedule. "Cool, you've got geography, maths and art with me!" She said, scratching her chin as she examined the paper. "You've got English with Jonty, and music with Tennyson... Art with me... And PE with all of us!"

I stared at her disbelievingly. "You've really got all of their schedules memorised?"

She shrugged. "What can I say, I'm the boss of our gang. Well, will you join us?"

"I guess so..."

"Yes!" Ally leapt up again and yelled out, "DUDES, WE GOT A NEW FELLA IN OUR GROUP!"

"Alessia, sit down or you're walking!" the driver yelled

She dropped down beside me again and grinned. "Welcome to my world!"

I smiled. Maybe it won't be quite as bad here as I thought.
