One.

"I am deeply sorry for your loss, soldier."

Jungkook should have known. Should have realised there and then that Junghyun wasn't going to make it.

Four slices to your stomach is fatal. Of course he was going to die.

Yet Jungkook still couldn't believe it when the sergeant told him, even though the lifeless body was in front of him, guts still hanging out.

Ready for dumping with the others.

Jungkook clamped his lips together from screaming. Not in front of these people. Never in front of these people.

The sergeant only gave him a look of pity before turning to his other errands.

He'd seen bodies before. Too many to count. He wouldn't know the soldiers who died for him. Gunned down while he sat at the back, enjoying the view.

He wouldn't know the pain that strikes when you see your dead brother gutted on a table.

"You should still remember your duty to this city, soldier," the general reminded. "Don't let this death change your mindset. You are still needed here to fight."

Jungkook, however, didn't say anything. He only stood as still as his brother's dead body until the sergeant left him.

The silence was unbearably heavy as he set his eyes on his brother's face.

He was young. Too young to have his life snatched cruelly away from him.

Jungkook took a step towards Junghyun. He still looked handsome, even if he was dead.

No tears formed in Jungkook's eyes. He wished they did, so he can prove that he did care for his brother, the one now lying here before him.

But none came. His eyes were as dry as his throat, his mouth, and his soul, empty of life as he knew it.

I have to go, Jungkook thought suddenly. I have to leave before I die here myself.

Jungkook leaned down to kiss his brother's forehead. He then looked around, finding anything he could take with him.

A bag of coins lay scattered on a table. No doubt my brother's four-month late pay, Jungkook thought bitterly.

He grabbed the bag of coins and hooked it on his belt, next to his beloved shotgun. He slung on the coat piled on the table and begin to walk back.

He looked back at Junghyun one last time. Farewell, dear brother, he declared to himself, and left the room.

Jungkook left the medical camps stationed outside the city, next to the woods. They were at war with the other major city, and so far, their side was winning.

Jungkook didn't feel like he was winning, however. Not when the only sole thing that loved him was now gone.

Sergeant Seokjin saw the boy leaving camp and shouted. "Soldier!"

Jungkook whirled around to see the superior walking over to him. "Where do you think you're going?"

"Somewhere to drink, sir."

Seokjin gave the boy a little smirk. "Off to the brothels, then?"

Jungkook was too agitated to blush. "I only want a soju, sir."

The sergeant let out a hysterical little laugh. "That's what they all say, Jungkook," he drawled. "Just be back by twenty-four hours. You know what happens if you don't."

A sigh. "Yes sir," he murmured. Jungkook saluted the officer and went on his way.

The brothels were the only thing nearby which offered something to help you.

Either to drink your worries away or fuck your sorrows away. Or both, if you're lucky.

It was a lengthy walk into the woods. Jungkook knew of a small path led which led him to the wooden cabin.

It was big, with logs of wood lining the tree up to the roof. There weren't many windows.

Probably to hide all that happened inside.

Jungkook pushed the door open, already hit by the strong smell of sweat and alcohol.

It was nearly full today. Dozens of soldiers laughed and screamed, a whore or two in their laps. The counter was stacked with men desperate for more to drink. Some women danced on the stage.

It was chaos.

Jungkook pushed through a few drunkards to get to the counter. A woman caught sight of him and smirked sensually at him. She propped her elbows as she leaned in, revealing her generous cleavage.

"How may I help you, young man?" she purred. "It seems you're in need of more than just a drink."

Jungkook wasn't in the mood to flirt back. He put a gold coin on the counter. "A soju. To the brim."

"Anything else?" the woman whispered, coming closer to Jungkook. He tilted his head back to avoid her incoming kiss.

Maybe she got the idea, because she shut up, and handed him the soju.

Jungkook downed the drink in one go. He set the glass down. "Another one."

"As you wish," the woman said, filling the glass again.

Jungkook took the glass from her and drunk. He slapped the glass down. "Another."

"Do you have the fare, sir?" she questioned.

The boy tossed half the money in the bag on the counter. "Keep 'em coming."

The whore gathered the gold and started to line up the drinks. Jungkook drank all of them, feeling his head spin slightly.

He liked the feeling, though. He liked the way the alcohol rushed through his body, awakening him in some sense.

"Jungkook."

He turned his head. Taehyung looked back at him, his eyebrows furrowed in concern.

"What do you want?" Jungkook hissed.

His comrade didn't flinch from the boy's tone. "You're drunk. Sergeant Seokjin will kill you if you come up to service like this."

Jungkook picked up another glass and swallowed the contents. "Does it look like I give a shit?"

"Listen, man-"

"My brother is dead. Leave me alone."

Taehyung stopped. "Fine, man," he muttered, getting up. "But don't say that you weren't warned."

He left the boy to himself, eventually leaving the brothel.

Jungkook didn't care about his warning. He found himself not caring about a lot of things.

"Oi!" he called, signalling the bartender. She came back smirking, thinking he's finally noticed her.

Jungkook took out some more gold. "I need a room. Four hours. Anyone other than yourself."

The woman's face faltered. It was a little funny, but Jungkook didn't bother showing it on his face.

"Right...Right this way."
