Chapter 9: blurry nights

Titans Tower East
Don't Threaten Me with a Good Time by Panic! at the Disco plays from somewhere in the messed up sheets enveloping Jinx and Kid Flash's nearly naked bodies, both half asleep and suddenly awakened by the sound of Jinx's phone's ringtone.
"Do you really have to have such an obnoxious ringtone? You could at least put it on vibrate like normal people do." Kid groaned, tugging Jinx closer to him as she squirmed away, frantically rifling through the blankets in search of her phone.
"Panic! at the Disco is not obnoxious and I am offended you think it is." She replied sharply. "And besides, if I left it on vibrate, I'd never be able to find my phone and then how would I reply to your 'U up?' texts?" Her fingers finally wrapped around the source of the music and tugged it out with a triumphant smile. Meanwhile Kid just scowled, because of course Jinx was right. Jinx looked to see who was calling. Of course it was Raven.
"Babe, I gotta take this." Jinx said, with a slightly apologetic smile. Kid rolled his eyes and flopped back to the bed.
"Of course you do." He muttered. But he knew how important Jinx's friend was to her. It was one of the things he admired about her.
Jinx answered the phone with a concerned, "Hey, what's up?". The volume on her phone was obnoxiously loud, so Kid could hear basically everything Raven said on the other end.
"Hey, how fast can you get here?" There was a quiver in her voice, something unnatural for Raven. Jinx could tell she was upset and that could only mean the date hadn't gone well. Bummer, she had really hoped this one would would work out.
"As fast as you need me. What happened?"
"I don't know why I ever thought I could date a normal." Raven replied sullenly.
"What did that asshole do to you? I'll come pummel him!" Jinx offered, prompting a small smile from Raven.
"No, Jinx. Greg was perfect. He picked this amazing restaurant, he's so smart and intelligent. He loves to travel and read and he's so cultured. He is everything I ever thought I would want in a guy..."
There was a pause of silence as Raven composed her next statement. Even she was unsure of what had happened moments before. The date should have been perfect, and yet it wasn't. She was bored, unchallenged. And he could tell.
"Honestly, Jinx, he was boring to me." Raven finally explained. "He kept talking about tea and the history of India and a bunch of other subjects that I should have found absolutely fascinating... and I was just bored. And Beast Boy wouldn't stop texting me which was really distracting because somehow his stupid comments were more interesting than the perfect guy in front of me. And Greg could tell so we ended dinner early and he was just so sweet about it. I think I should just stop dating."
"It sounds like you went on a date with the wrong guy." Jinx giggled.
"I blame Beast Boy. He threw me off my game." Raven said decidedly.
"I blame him too. For not having the balls to ask you out on a date first."
"Not funny, Jinx." Raven sighed. "Can you come over and get drunk with me?"
"I'll get Kid and be there in a flash." Jinx promised. They said their goodbyes before hanging up. Then, Jinx turned to Kid with an innocent smile. "Wanna go get drunk with Raven?"
"We're in the middle of date night." He pouted.
"You showed up at my window with tacos and I thanked you with really good sex, I'm not sure that qualifies as a date." Jinx argued, getting up to find something to wear in the mess of her bedroom.
"You know, I would take you out to dinner on a real date, if someone would stop rejecting me." Kid's mouth twisted up in a teasing smirk, but there was that shadow in his eyes that revealed his hurt from the truth. He really liked Jinx and this thing they have going was nice for a while, but it was starting to get old. He wanted to take her to nice dinners and flaunt her on his arm. They acted like a couple in private, and then renounced all connection while out with their friends. He knew Jinx had her reservations about dating teammates, and wanted to be understanding of that, but he also wanted so much more from her. It was getting harder to deny that.
"Let's not fight about this right now. Please? We need to be there for Raven."
"Fine, but we can't keep dodging the topic forever, Jinx."
"I know..." Jinx sighed.
Hurriedly, the pair got dressed and ready to meet Raven. Kid didn't have too many options lying around Jinx's room but found a pair of jeans, a tshirt, and the jacket he had worn when he came. Jinx changed into a pair of high waisted black leather jeans paired with a see-through top made of a gauzy material over a black lace bralette. For the sake of the trip, Jinx also selected a leather jacket that was just warm enough to keep out the October chill. She also put on a pair of black heels that she knew Kid would find particularly enjoyable.
Once ready, Kid and Jinx left to meet Raven--Kid's super speed crossing the distance between their two cities in just minutes. They met Raven at a bar just down the street from the Indian restaurant she had called from. It was smaller and not very busy, which is exactly why Raven liked it. She was sitting on a stool at the end of the bar, chatting with the bartender whom she apparently knew. A drink was already being placed in front of her.
"Hey, Rae." Jinx greeted her friend, slipping into the unoccupied stool beside her. Kid lingered awkwardly behind his quote-unquote girlfriend before taking the next stool in line. As the girls settled into conversation, Kid flagged down the bartender. He ordered a beer for himself and a vodka Sprite for Jinx. As Raven had told Greg, the bartender did not bother to card either of them. Though technically Kid was 21, Jinx and Raven were still only 19. The bartender hardly seemed to care.
"This bar is pretty quiet." Jinx remarked, looking around. There were a few other small groups scattered around the tables and booths on the far wall but otherwise was empty. Music was playing not too loudly, making it fairly easy to talk.
"A DJ starts at 9, if you wanna stay for that. Usually it gets busier then." Raven replied, as Jinx's drink came along with Kid's beer. She sent him a small smile of gratitude, flattered that he remembered her drink order.
"I like dancing!" Jinx proclaimed, taking a greedy sip of her drink. "Kid likes to dance too, don't you?" She teased him.
"I tolerate it for you." He shrugged, hiding a smile. "So, Rae, where's the rest of your team tonight?"
"Star and Robin went to some holiday party in Tamaran and Cyborg is with BumbleBee in New York. Beast Boy is the only one still at the tower."
"We should invite him out." Kid decided, retrieving his phone from his pocket. Jinx glanced at Raven to see her reaction.
"I'm not sure Rae wants to see him right now." She chimed in on her friend's behalf. "They don't exactly get along."
"I'll keep him away from you. Let you have girl time. Please? I really don't wanna be your third wheel again." Kid gave the two girls his best puppy eyes, but Jinx had built up a resistance to them.
"It's your call," she said, turning to her friend. Raven hated being the one to decide.
"Well, he's either going to text me all night or find a way to annoy me here regardless, so might as well just invite him over. Maybe if he has other friends to occupy him, I can finally have some peace from him." She agreed thoughtfully.
"I'll go give him a call." Kid smiled, excusing himself to a quieter part of the bar.
"Wanna do a tequila shot?" Jinx suggested with a devilish smile once Kid was out of earshot.
"You know how I feel about tequila..." Raven groaned, but Jinx was already flagging down the bartender.
"No one really likes tequila, Rae. That's the whole point of taking the shot." She argued before turning to the bartender and ordering 4 tequila shots. Beast Boy would probably be arriving any minute and Jinx was of course going to drag him into the action. Perhaps she was not the best choice of a drinking partner after all, Raven thought.
The bartender poured the shots and Jinx handed him a credit card to start a tab on. "Let's steal one of those booths." She suggested, picking up the four glasses and making her way over. Reluctantly, Raven trailed behind her. Kid sent Jinx a text saying he would wait for Beast Boy outside to give the two girls some time alone together.
Jinx and Raven chatted quietly, sipping their drinks and patiently waiting for the guys to join them. Raven was a little nervous to spend time around Beast Boy, especially after the heated texts they had been sharing earlier. And while Jinx was usually a reliable friend, when Kid was around she could become flaky--disappearing for several minutes to an hour.
She could deny her feelings for Kid all she wanted but Raven knew there was something going on between them. Obviously they have been spending time together (he was with her when she called 😏) and there are way too many instances at parties when they will be the only two people missing from the crowd. Raven could be a little naïve at times, but she wasn't an idiot. She knew what was up. Why they aren't an official couple yet, that still remained a mystery to her. Maybe after a few shots she could cajole it out of her friend, though.
"So... what were you and Kid doing earlier?" Raven attempted to (subtly) ask. "I didn't interrupt something, did I?" The suggestion was clear in her voice and Jinx blushed at the memory.
"Oh, nothing too much..." She replied coyly.
"Just be careful. Wally really cares about you but he isn't going to wait forever for you to make up your mind." Raven warned her friend.
"I know, I know." Jinx sighed, annoyed by how right her friend was. "I'm just not sure I'm ready for that--a relationship. We're so different, you know. And there are like a million ways it could go wrong..." Raven knew how her friend was feeling. She often felt the same way when it came to relationships. But when she sees the way Wally West looks at Jinx, she almost believes in love. She believes in them.
Jinx quickly turned the conversation around on Raven, no longer wanting to discuss her own issues. "So, BB has been texting you all night?" Raven groaned, banging her head on the table in both exasperation and embarrassment. "So that's a yes." Jinx chuckled lightly.
"He's just bored and being his annoying self." Raven tried to excuse his behavior, though deep down she knew there was more to it. Things had been weird between them ever since the arcade/bookstore trip. Something had shifted in their relationship that showed it was possible for them to get along--if only for a few hours. And the way he had looked at her when he had walked into her room earlier... It was more than just lust, Raven was sure of that.
"Mmhmm..." Jinx agreed sarcastically. "Or, you know, jealous?"
"Jinx..." Raven warned her friend.
"Come on, you saw the way he was staring at you earlier. He wanted you." She smirked triumphantly at the jab as Raven just shook her head defiantly. Just then, the two girls caught sight of Kid heading toward them, Beast Boy following behind him. He veered slightly to stop at the bar for a beer while Kid continued over to the booth the girls had claimed. He slid in beside Jinx, taking care not to get too close to her and raise suspicion. The math finally clicked in Raven's head, though, as she realized that this would mean Beast Boy would be sitting next to her. Of course, Jinx had probably planned this as she took the seat opposite Raven.
As predicted, the green changeling plopped himself beside her a few minutes later, a clear plastic cup of beer in each hand. "Miss me, Mama?" He asked Raven teasingly.
"Hardly." She deadpanned. Then, eyeing the two drinks, commented, "I see someone came to party."
"It's happy hour. Buy one, get one. You don't pass up a deal like that." He defended himself, taking a heady sip from one of the plastic cups. Raven just rolled her eyes. "Besides, I'm not the one ready with tequila shots."
"That was all Jinx." Raven supplied, hands raised as if to prove her innocence somehow.
"Guilty as charged." Their pink-haired friend beamed. "Now grab one and drink!" She added, reaching for one of the shot glasses. "Any of you pussies need limes?" Raven considered grabbing one, already dreading the shot she was about to take. But Beast Boy's response stopped her.
"Please, how weak do you think we are?" He laughed lightly and Raven took it as a sort of challenge. She couldn't let Beast Boy beat her, even if it was tequila. So she grabbed a shot glass and steeled herself. They raised their glasses in a circle.
"To one damn good night we hopefully won't remember tomorrow!" Jinx toasted, before slamming down the liquor in her glass. Kid and Beast Boy quickly followed and Raven, though hesitant, did as well, trying to take the shot as quickly as possible. It burned her throat and left an unpleasant taste in her mouth, but she refused to let it show on her face. Jinx took hers like a pro (she basically was, though) and was making fun of Kid as he coughed in disgust, cursing tequila and Jinx's poor taste in liquor. Meanwhile, Beast Boy was glancing over at Raven, slightly impressed by the unfazed expression she had managed to uphold.
"Thought you didn't like tequila." He whispered. Raven just shrugged up her shoulders, a small victorious smile lighting up her face. Beast Boy elicited a slight laugh and made to stand up. "Alright next round is on me. Let's see how you handle Fireball." The challenge was directed at Raven.
"I love Fireball." She smiled, raising her drink of Fireball and cranberry juice, hoping to rattle him.
But he only smiled wider, leaning in slightly to say, "I know," and then sauntered over to the bar, leaving behind a scowling Raven. Jinx, having caught the display, sent Raven a suggestive look which Raven just shook her head at. This was going to be a long night if Beast Boy didn't stop his shameless flirting soon.

Two mixed drinks of Fireball and cranberry juice and three shots of various alcohols later, Raven was feeling it. A DJ had started, inviting a small crowd of people to occupy the cleared space serving as a dance floor. Though the music he played was far from Raven's taste, drunk Raven found the strong mix of house beats to be a little infectious. Jinx and Kid, also pretty gone, were out on the dancefloor having a good time while Beast Boy stayed faithful to Raven's side, despite her multiple encouragements to join them if he wished. And judging by how he rocked out to the music beside her, she knew he wanted to be out there.
But not without you. A voice in her head, belonging to Lust of course, reminded her.
"Should we get another drink?" Raven suggested half-heartedly, feeling as though they should be doing something. He had gone back to the bar for two more beers and his fourth was now gone--it had been for several minutes, Raven had noticed. Beast Boy examined the empty plastic cup in his hands in debate. It had become a sort of prop to him - a way to look involved while also allowing him to lose himself in his thoughts. He was still debating how drunk he should get tonight. Jinx and Kid were clearly in the mood to party and while Raven could hold her liquor pretty well, she apparently had a tendancy to over-do it when her heart was hurting. He figured one of them should stay semi-sober to make sure they all get home safe.
And, truthfully, he was more entertained just sitting on the side and watching Raven: the way her dress hugged her figure, the infectious curve of her smile at the occasional joke. He was determined to do whatever he could to help her forget about her sub-par date. He did feel partially responsible, especially after Kid heckled him about it on the phone. Apparently Jinx was convinced their dark friend had secret feelings for the changeling and tasked her non-boyfriend to find out if he felt the same--and of course to make sure he didn't screw anything else up. Dutifully, Kid had passed on the message.
"Sure." Beast Boy agreed with a soft shrug. "Same drink or something different?"
"I was thinking about trying the green Kinky..." Raven hummed, turning to head to the bar. Jinx sidled up to them as they found a spot in the mosh pit around the bar.
"I think it's time for another shot!" She exclaimed excitedly, slinging an arm around Raven's shoulder.
"Just not another Fireball!" Kid nearly begged, worming his way through the crowd to join Jinx. Childishly, Jinx stuck her tongue out at him. Nonetheless, she decided to order a round of the classic Cherry Bomb, something everyone could agree on. Once everyone had gotten what they wanted, the group made their way back to their booth. Jinx and Kid settled into one side, perhaps a little closer than before, while Beast Boy and Raven found a place in the other. Jinx raised her shot with another toast and smiled excitedly as her friends followed suit.
Kid started a conversation about a new show he had started to watch on Netflix (one that Jinx had, coincidentally, been watching too). Beast Boy had been interested in the show as well. And while Raven had little knowledge or even interest in what they were talking about, she was content listening from the sidelines, enjoying the slight buzz from the alcohol. Her heart had all but forgotten the sting of her failed date and despite everything, she found she was actually having a pretty good time.
Slowly the conversation changed from one topic to another, Jinx was more than happy to buy a few more rounds of shots for the group, and Beast Boy dutifully ensured that Raven always had a glass of something alcoholic in front of her. It was perhaps the only thing currently holding her together.
The end result was a giggly mess of a Raven. She was so far gone, Jinx was actually successful in her attempt to drag her onto the dancefloor - Beast Boy trailing behind them knowing he would probably need to help support Raven and keep her from stumbling in her heels. And it was a good call, as Raven did indeed stumble quite a bit - her usual grace long gone along with her wits. Several times she found herself tripping and stumbling, kept upright only by Beast Boy's firm chest that was always faithfully behind her.
And after several of these occurances, Beast Boy finally grew tired of staying vigilant to catch her falls and instead pulled her closer to him, so that she practically grinded against him. Sober Raven would probably have an abundance of offenses for Beast Boy's ear. In her tipsiness, however, she hardly seemed to mind. Jinx raised a suggestive brow to Beast Boy, which he only rolled his eyes at.
"What else was I supposed to do with her?" He inquired of her. He also noted that Kid was just as close to Jinx but withheld his comment on it, fearing the wrath it might draw from her. She was a bit more coherent than Raven and more likely act on her anger.
They danced for several songs, unaware of the passing hours as they enjoyed themselves. Raven's bartender friend was growing wary of the number of drinks she had ordered so far, but continued serving for the good tips. And he noticed the way Beast Boy protectively stayed at her side. But then, the DJ played I Kissed a Girl by Katy Perry and things, as they always seem to do, went a little crazy.
Apparently it was one of Jinx's favorite songs and she dragged Raven up onto the bartop with her to sing and dance along with the song. They both kicked off their shoes, leaving their non-boyfriends to pick them up after them, worried the bartender would kick them out. But he only watched the pair of friends in amusement, taking care to move any glasses and other tripping hazards out of their way. Bystanders turned to watch, cheering them on. A group of, clearly wasted, college-aged guys started cheering them on to kiss, getting quite a kick out of the show the two girls were giving.
And Beast Boy didn't know whether to be fearful of the possibility of that happening or delighted. There was something erotic about two (very hot) females kissing. But this was Raven.
His Raven, a possessive voice reminded him, even though he knew it was wrong. She wasn't his - not really. Everything they were doing was just a temporary band-aid until the right one came along. Hadn't she proven that when she went on that date tonight?
And yet, he couldn't help but to feel an excited thrill as the song came to an end and the two girls, in their drunken stupor, decided to oblige the frat boys' request - almost not going through with it due to several bouts of the giggles. But on their third attempt, Jinx managed to hold her laughter in long enough to give Raven a chaste peck on the lips - her bright pink lipstick leaving a mark of the deed behind. And when she pulled away, both girls broke into a fit of giggles, almost falling off the bar top.
Beast Boy and Kid Flash fought the crowd of eager young men to help their non-girlfriends get down safely. "I think they've had enough for tonight." The bartender chuckled, more amused than anything.
"Yeah, no kidding." Kid muttered under his breath. But Beast Boy caught it and silently agreed.
"I'll get an Uber." He said, holding Raven upright with one arm while pulling up the Uber app on his phone with the other. The two boys dragged their girls back over to the booth they had occupied for most of the night. The bartender followed behind with a couple of waters to help the giggling girls sober up while they waited for the car to arrive. Thankfully, their driver was close and the four didn't have to wait too long.
Without too much of a fuss (and the promise of ice cream), the boys managed to convince the girls to get into the car. Beast Boy took shotgun to help give the driver directions, leaving Kid to take care of the giggly girls in the back. Jinx was currently conspiring to braid Kid's hair, as it had started to grow quite long, and Raven wasn't exactly arguing against the idea. Luckily, they weren't too far from the Tower.
When they got there, each guy took care to help their respective girl out of the car and up the path leading to the front door. Beast Boy paid the driver and made sure to thank him for putting up with the girls. While they had calmed down near the end of the ride, they had been rather rowdy at the start - singing along to every song he played and asking a bunch of questions of the driver. Beast Boy had felt a little sorry for the guy and made sure to give him a thank you and a generous tip.
"You can take a couple of the guest rooms." Beast Boy told Kid who was struggling to keep a now sleepy Jinx upright. He nodded in response and hoisted Jinx over his shoulder to carry her the rest of the way. "They're down the hall -"
"Yeah, we know where they are Greenie." Jinx said through a yawn, just barely staying present. Beast Boy rolled his eyes at the nickname.
"Alright. Night guys." The changeling said, leading Raven in the direction of their own rooms. The alcohol had started to wear Raven down as well, making her sleepy and clumsy as they made their way to the elevator. And she leaned almost all of her weight against Beast Boy as they rode the elevator up to their floor, tucking her head into his shoulder.
"I still can't believe you and Jinx actually kissed." He admitted, stroking her hair with an arm. Raven only giggled in response and buried her head further into his chest.
"She kissed me." Raven mumbled into his chest, just barely audible. She knew he was mostly teasing but her befuddled brain felt the need to clarify that to him. Beast Boy released a low chuckle. She was too cute in her drunken/tired state.
"Right, of course." He agreed softly. Then, with the beginning curl of a smirk, he added, "But still, I can't help but wonder. How was it? Is she better than me?"
"A fish would be better than you." She quipped, poking his abdomen lightly.
"Well, if you think so, I can arrange for that..." He teased, mutating just his lips so they resembled those of a fish and leaning in to try to land a kiss on Raven's cheek. She squirmed away, suddenly much more awake than before.
"Gross, you're all scaly!" She complained.
"You said you'd rather kiss a fish. I'm just trying to grant your wish." He laughed, changing back to his normal form. Raven glared up at him, because even with her heels back on he still had an inch or two over her. Beast Boy just smiled innocently as he dared himself to continue his pestering. She did seem to be enjoying it so far...
"So then, are you saying my kisses are better than a fish's? Than Jinx's?"
"No way," she said defiantly, pushing him away. But not very hard, because despite how annoying he could be, she was also kind of having fun joking around with him.
"Really? Are you sure?" He continued to tease, leaning in closer. "Maybe you need a refresher..." His breath fanned her cheeks as he was almost near enough to actually do it. And she almost wanted him to.
And then the elevator finally reached its destination and dinged open, reminding them where they were.
"I think that's the sign to go to bed," Raven said softly, pulling away to head to her room. Beast Boy trailed behind her, admiring (for what could very possibly be the last time tonight) the way her dress hugged her small frame and accentuated her curves in all the right ways. There were definitely some perks of getting to watch her walk away...
But he wasn't quite ready to leave things be just yet.
"Well, what about a good night kiss?" He suggested strutting ahead of her to beat her to the door and block the way in, a cocky smirk sliding upon his lips.
"Beast Boy..." Raven warned.
"What? Jinx got one." He pouted in response.
Raven just shook her head, punched in the code to unlock her door, and slipped past him. Beast Boy followed, much to her dismay.
"Just one itty-bitty peck?" He taunted again. Sneaking up behind her, he wrapped his long arms around her small frame. "You know..." he said seductively, pulling her close to him, "it'd be a shame if all your hard work for tonight went to waste.."
"Beast Boy." She groaned, beginning to sound annoyed. But Beast Boy just hummed into her neck, beginning to trail soft kisses along the delicate skin there -- one of the many weak spots he had discovered Raven had. And as predicted she visibly began to melt into his embrace, moving her head to give him better access.
But just as quickly she realized this and attempted to protest against him. She had even started to tell him off, intending to use his full name. But all she got out was a slow "Gar.." which sounded more like a moan than anything else. Beast Boy smirked against her as he noticed, pleased by his accomplishment, and nibbled down harder on the spot that had elicited such a response, prompting another soft moan from Raven. Taking the opportunity of her weakness, Beast Boy dragged his lips up to finally catch her lips with his own in a searing kiss.
Giving in, Raven turned in his arms to face him, wrapping her arms around his neck. She sought dominance - the chance to overtake him - but Beast Boy was unwilling to let her have it. With one hand wrapping up into her hair and another fingering the zipper on the back of her dress, he continued to kiss her with a passion he had been holding in all night. From the moment he had seen her dressed for her date, he had wanted her. Now that he finally had her, he was reluctant to let her go.
It wasn't long before Beast Boy tugged the zipper down to expose more skin for him to explore. And Raven, giving into Lust who badly wanted him too, let the dress fall off boldly to reveal that she had not been wearing a bra underneath - a fact that Beast Boy was very much pleased with.
"Hot Mama," he nearly whispered, his voice husky, in awe of the goddess before him. Then, briskly, he picked Raven up, letting her straddle him. Growing eager and a little turned on by his compliments, Raven began to nibble on his neck, hitting every sensitive spot she could reach at her angle.
Beast Boy carried her to the bed and promptly laid her down. He set to work taking off her shoes and stockings, leaving her bare save for a pair of simple black panties. Meanwhile Raven was tugging at his shirt, attempting to even the playing field. And after both her shoes had been discarded, Beast Boy abided her wishes - tossing his shirt to the floor with the rest of their clothes. Raven moved on to undo his belt and tug down his jeans, and soon they both were naked and ready.
It was teasing and flirty - an upbeat dance. Familiar and different at the same time. Because each time they went there, it was a little easier to forget it meant nothing.
Yes, it was fun. A lot of fun. But there was something else to it... a connection that had begun to form, drawing them closer with each new weakness discovered, with each moan and gasp of pleasure.
And when it was done and both parties were spent, it was a little too comfortable to cuddle together - her head on his chest as he stroked her back lightly, soaking in the postcoital bliss. Until one fell asleep and the other was forced to stay there as she cuddled into him tightly, revealing a rare sliver of vulnerability.
Not that he altogether minded this part. It was unnaturally comfortable sleeping together - as though they had done it a thousand times already. And even though he knew this was mostly due to the fact that he was starting to fall deeper in love with the raven haired goddess, he couldn't help but to think that maybe she was starting to fall for him too.
