Chapter 11

My father stares at me with his eyes darker than than the centre of a black hole. I can just feel it sucking me in.

His face shows no emotion but a nod with his head indicates that he wants to talk to me.

Alone.

He takes me back to the forest.

"Since we've arrived I never got a chance to talk to you."

I give no reply, waiting for what he's going to say next.

"So, how are you? He tries small talk but leaves the air dull with awkwardness.

"The same." I respond uninterested in what he has to say, I already know what his about to say.

"That's what I was afraid of. Have you at least come close to wolfing out?" He's concern breaks through his voice as be questions my progress.

"With my teeth and claws. That's about it." My answer leaves my father in disappoint before trying to wipe it from his face.

"Your grandfather was a late bloomer as well." I can tell he's trying to comfort me but it's not working.

"When did he learn to transform?"

"About your age actually. He then went on to become one of the greatest wolf's known." He replies.

He rarely ever speaks about his father. He must be trying to make me feel better about my situation.

"I'm not like him."

My father then gentle pits his hand onto my shoulder, staring into the face.

"On the contrary, I think you're more alike than you think. I can tell you're going to be a lone wolf."

"Was he one too?"

"Yes." With that the conversation grows silent.

Lone wolves are rare to find yet I'm not surprised that I'll be one. Society was never in my future to begin with.

"You must understand Lycan. Lone wolves are powerful, more than you can fathom. That power can be overwhelming."

I am left unresponsive, not knowing what to say next.

Power? I've never been associated with it.

"Here." He hands me a necklace, it's old. Unique, maybe a relic? " Was it his?"

"Think of it like an heirloom." He answers. Questions formulate with what he's trying to accomplish here.

" Why're you giving it to me?"

My father turns he's face to me, no longer sketched with disappointment but with hope. "You have the chance to be the best of all of us, to hold your grandfather's legacy, better than I ever did."

That's the nicest thing he's ever told me. It's also the most scariest.

He expects me to be the great like my grandfather. I don't think I have what it takes.

The next day I watch as my family make their way back home.

This experience has gone better than I expected.

I then make my way back to my room. Stay Alive awaits me.

I play for hours before being interrupted by Duncan's presence.

He likes to watch me play.

It throws off my game, but I cannot chase him away.

He wants to play. His eyes watch as my fingers move across my phone's screen.

"If we had a TV here we could play this together on my console."

"Yeah." I see in his eyes, his thinking of a way to get a TV.

Normally I wouldn't do this but maybe playing with someone won't be so bad.

At night I stare at my ceiling thinking about Catherine.

The words that Eden told me could be right. Maybe I can make this work.

I then grab my phone.

Again I am looking at her contact. However this time I won't chicken out.

I type before erasing it again. I do this a few times to decide what will my first message be.

When I finally get the word to say my hands freeze. Refusing to let me press the send button.

I'd then close my hands and taking a deep breath.

My fingers loosen and I press send.

Message:
Hi
