Part 17: The Test

"Why are you always upsetting my bhabhi, Chote?"

Arnav stared at his sister in confusion before looking at his wife and then at Anjali again as they sat on the couch video calling.

Arnav - When did I upset her?

Anjali - Just look at her. She seems so upset and not at all looking like the usual chirpy Khushi.

Arnav slightly pushed Khushi's shoulder with his own to bring her out of thoughts. She looked at him with a frown and then followed the voice to the standing tablet on the coffee table. She smiled a bit now.

Anjali - Khushiji, are you alright? You seem upset and lost today. Did Chote fight with you?

Khushi - No Di. This time he's not to be blamed. In fact, everything is fine. I was just thinking about something.

Arnav - This time?

She didn't have the energy and willpower to argue with him now, so just rolled her eyes at him and continued to her sister-in-law.

Khushi - Di, you guys talk. I'll go see what to cook for lunch.

She got up leaving the siblings pair baffled. Khushi had never left any call. She'd be talking endlessly to all the family members and hang up only after hours. Such behaviour was so unlikely, that the duo couldn't help but worry.

Anjali - Chote, I suggest you see her. She seems upset today.

Arnav - Ya Di. I'll call you later. Bye.

"Khush, what's the matter? Are you upset over something?"

He found her up in their room, looking for something in a drawer in the cupboard.

Khushi - I'm late.

Arnav - For what? Where are you going?

He frowned in confusion as he walked towards his wife. It was Saturday and they were to go out for dinner but apart from that, she didn't share any plan of hers with him.

Khushi - No Arnav. I don't mean that. I'm going nowhere.

Arnav - Then?

She held her head into her palms nodding in denial. How can men be so stupid? Arnav stared at her still awaiting an answer.

Khushi - My periods are late.

Arnav - Oh...ok!? But isn't everything kept in the bathroom cupboard?

Again. How can men be so stupid, she asked herself. He clearly can't understand she's almost panicking. She wouldn't be, if she got her periods now!

Khushi - No! I didn't get them yet! I should have gotten them four days ago. But I'm late!

It finally hit him. She observed him clearly to see how he reacts. She wasn't alone in this after all. In fact, she would be happy if she was pregnant. But Arnav didn't want to have kids yet, so they had been protecting.

He looked at her form sternly, still very much in awe. He couldn't understand how to react. It shouldn't have been possible at the first place. On the other hand, contraception isn't always 100% reliable.

Arnav - Did you take a test?

She shook her head in denial. He cupped her face to make her look at him.

Arnav - Don't worry. Even if you're pregnant, It'll be fine.

She looked at him as a sense of relief took over her and she asked happily.

Khushi - Sach?

Arnav - Yes. Now go take the test.

She kissed his cheek and almost ran into the bathroom. She was so glad that their child would find acceptance by him. Just to avoid any kind of doubt, she used all of the three home kits they'd kept in the bathroom.

Arnav looked at her with raised brows as she finally came out passing a half smile at him.

Khushi - It's negative.

He sighed in relief before he approached her with a relaxed look and pulled her into an embrace.

Arnav - Thank Goodness. To be honest, I was scared because I don't want to have kids yet.

She hugged him back slowly and closed her eyes to prevent her tears from leaving her eyes.

„Hello, Jiji?"

She took a deep breath trying not to give away the sadness in her voice. But in vain, Payal still sensed the distress.

Payal - Khushi, what happened? You called so late in the night. And why are you sounding so upset? Did you have a fight with Arnavji?

Khushi - No, Jiji. We didn't fight. It's just...actually...

Payal - Khushi, tell me what's the matter? I'm getting impatient.

Khushi wiped a lone tear that left her eye and she gulped before finally speaking up.

Khushi - Jiji, I'm pregnant.

Payal gasped and then chuckled in happiness, nodding in denial. Her little sister being the Sanka Devi she is!

Payal - That's why you're upset? But Khushi, that's a good news. You should be happy!

Khushi - No Jiji. How can I be happy when Arnavji doesn't even want this child?

Now being able to hold back, she sobbed clearly audible for Payal's ears making her jump in worry.

Payal - What? But why? Why wouldn't Arnavji want his own child? Khushi, is everything well between the two of you?

Khushi - Woh-

„Khushi"

She was alerted as she heard his voice from behind. Wiping her cheeks, she turned to see him approaching her.

Khushi - Jiji, Arnavji woke up. I'll call you tomorrow. Good night.

She cut the call and went inside the room before he could step outside to the balcony and closed the French window behind.

Khushi - Woh, I couldn't sleep...so went into fresh air...

Looking everywhere but at Arnav, she moved past him and went to the bed. He followed her and sat down beside her.

Arnav - You we're talking to Payal...I heard everything.

She raised her lashes to look at him and lowered her eyes again as tears threatened to drop out.

He kept his hand on hers in a comforting manner.

Arnav - Why did you lie to me?

She turned away and sobbed covering her face with her hands.

Khushi - I'm so sorry. I should have been careful. We had decided to not have a baby yet and still I didn't take care.

Arnav - Khush, relax.

He got closer and turned her towards himself. Wiping her tears he cupped her face.

Arnav - Stop crying and look at me.

She gulped and slowly peeked into his eyes. She was stared, he'd be angry but he wasn't. Neither did he seem upset.

Arnav - Khushi, I said I'm not ready for a kid yet didn't mean I won't accept the baby you're pregnant with.

Khushi - But I know you don't like children.

She pouted at him innocently keeping her hands above his that were cupping her cheeks.

Arnav - Yes but that doesn't mean I won't like my own child. You completely got me wrong Khushi!

Khushi - But you didn't want to have children yet. You were relieved when I said I'm not pregnant.

Arnav - I admit, at first I got scared at the thought of having my own baby...but that was a genuine fear. I got cold feet.

Khushi - So why weren't you ready for a kid then?

He left her face and grabbed her hands into his.

Arnav - Because we're here, away from our families. I'm here for work and mostly busy. I come home late often and have so less free time. In all this, I'm hardly able to take care of you when you fall sick, let alone a pregnant you.

She opened her mouth in comprehension, clearly getting what Arnav meant to say.

Arnav - I had thought that once we go back to India, we can plan a baby. Our families will be around to take care of you when I'm engrossed in work.

She pressed his hand and smiled, happy that he thought so much about her.

Khushi - That's it? Why didn't you tell me before? I felt so miserable thinking what not!

Arnav - I'm sorry. I should have discussed it with you. But Khushi, I'm not sad that you're pregnant.

Khushi - But are you happy?

She questioned him curiously awaiting a positive answer. He replied with glee.

Arnav - I am. We're going to have a baby! My Khush is going to become the mother of my child!

She smirked looking down as he smirked at her. She pushed herself into his arms.

Khushi - You too na Arnav!

He embraced her happily and caressed her smooth hair.

Arnav - Khushi, how about you go back to India now? I'm mostly with work here and can't be with you all time. So-

Khushi - No. Not at all. I won't leave you.

She disagreed immediately looking up at him.

Arnav - But Khush, baby, try to understand. In India, you'll be better taken care of.

Khushi - If it were a question of few weeks, I would have agreed. But it's the matter of almost a year! You know I can't stay away from you. And I don't want to be away from you, especially when I'm pregnant!

He parted from the embrace and took in her pouting face.

Arnav - Ok fine. Then let's do one thing. I'll ask Di to come here so you won't be all alone when am at work.

She peeked at him suddenly with widened eyes and a huge smile.

Khushi - Really!? You'll call Di here?

Arnav - Of course! You need someone here to take care of you.

She pecked his cheek before throwing her arms around his neck.

Khushi - That's a great idea Arnav. I'm so happy. I used to get bored all day. Now I'll have Di with me to talk to. We'll do so much-

Arnav - Ok ok! Now let's sleep? You're pregnant, you need a good amount of sleep for my baby's healthy development.

He pulled her apart and made her lay into the bed and got in beside her. She hit his chest playfully and rested her head onto it.

Khushi - I can't wait to give the good news to our families.

Arnav - I know. But let's consult a doctor first and have it confirmed. I'll take you to the gynecologist tomorrow in the morning.

She nodded before closing her eyes in content and sending a silent prayer to DM. Both fell asleep hugging each other and looking forward to the next day.
