Lollie Parker

Lollie lifted her head from the sink, revealing her brown hair.

She hadn't dyed her hair in a while so why not now.

It was a change.

But maybe that's a good thing.
﹏﹏﹏﹏

Riley stood in the hole touching Lollie's hair.

It was different for everyone.

"Riles? Ollie?"

"Peaches?"

"How are you two feeling today?" Maya asked.

"Well, I didn't cry all night." Riley said.

"That's good." Maya said.

Lollie hadn't said much of anything since Lucas called it quits.

"Because I stopped when I passed out from crying." Riley added.

Lollie smiled at her, "Well, you seem better now."

"That's where you're wrong." Riley said.

"Okay." Maya said.

"But the seniors wanted us to stand here, watch what goes on, and learn from it. They have their reason." Riley said.

"To make fools out of us?" Maya asked, "Mission accomplished. We're fools. We're fools without friends."

"They made their choice. They have started their high school careers without us and I wish them well." Riley said.

"Yeah. Maybe we shouldn't think about them today." Lollie said.

"Yeah."

Riley started crying, "I hope that Farkle remembers that science can't explain people and he keeps himself open to love."

"You gonna do one for each?" Maya asked.

"Yes."

"Give me a couple of bucks for a brownie." Maya said.

"Okay, Maya. I want juice."

"You want anything?" Maya asked Lollie.

"No."

She looked over at Noah, "You?"

"I'm good."

"I hope Smackle looks up from her books every once in a while so that she doesn't miss life."

"Apple?" Maya asked.

"Grape. I hope Zay stops using comedy to cover up his inner turmoil."

"They're out of grape." Maya shouted.

"Surprise me."

"They're not really out of grape!" Maya said putting the drink in front of Riley.

"What a nice surprise."

Maya looked at Lollie, "You look dead so I bought you orange juice."

"Everybody loves to hear that."

"Did you get to Lucas yet?" Maya asked.

"I hope Lucas has a very bad day."

"Gosh, you're cute." Maya said, "You know what? I'd rather be a fool with the three of you than to be anything without you three. So what can we learn from down here?"

"Here comes purple combat boots. I like her. She walks with confidence. And here comes jungle girl. She's waiting for motorcycle boots." Riley said.

"Vroom, vroom." Maya said.

"Vroom, vroom, baby!" Riley said.

"Riles? Lollie?"

"Peaches?"

"They're way more advanced in high school.

"We're middle school hand-holders." Riley said.

"What if those seniors sent us down here because we think we're so ready for this place and we're so not?" Maya asked.

"Well, then Lollie would be right. And I hope that she's right." Riley said

"Ya need to stop thinking about 'em, kid. They're gone. Done-zo.
Kaput."

"Everything's changing. I lost my friends and you're a mobster and Lollie's a dead little zombie." Riley said.

Lollie only smiled.

"Did you stop thinking about 'em?" Maya asked.

"Yes. I wonder how everybody else is doing except for them."

Maya looked at Lollie, "You never answered my question. Are you okay?"

Lollie sighed.

"Life, as we speak, could be so much better."
﹏﹏﹏﹏

"Why "massacre"? Why you got "massacre" up there? Why can't you just teach us names and dates?" Marly asked.

"Marly Evans and what she learns today! That's the name and date I care about. All of you and right now, are you listening to me?" Mr. Matthews asked, "It was patriots who founded our new land and it was patriots who fought for it. Why do we remember the Alamo? Farkle, Smackle, a duet. Go."

"The Alamo was a small, isolated fortress with a handful of patriots inside who felt it was important to stick together and fight for what they believed." Farkle started.

"They were surrounded by a much larger number of people, coming at them from all directions, who believed this place belonged to them." Smackle finished.

"The patriots desperately wanted reinforcements, but reinforcements never came. What happened to 'em?" Mr. Matthews asked.

Riley smiled, "They stayed in their fortress and gave everybody a friendly smile, and eventually, they walked upstairs."

"They were massacred." Mr. Matthews said.

"Then they walked upstairs?" Riley asked.

"No, but that battle gave birth to a slogan. What was the slogan?" Mr. Matthews asked.

"Remember the Alamo." Lucas said.

"Remember the Alamo! And why do we remember the Alamo? Lucas, Zay, a duet."

"Because the patriots gave their lives for a greater good." Lucas started.

"That battle had only just begun, and some years later that land became ours, and the name of that land was-" Zay finished.

"Texas!"

"Stop it!"

"Right, Texas, your home. So, guys, that's why we remember the Alamo and why we remember all the battles that we fight in an effort to make a new place our home. Now, you can stay massacred or you can realize the battle has just begun." Mr. Matthews said.

"We were kings, Matthews." Maya said.

"Kingdoms fall. Everyone who believes they're gonna rule the world falls. Everyone who believes they're strong eventually comes up against someone that's stronger. And every patriot fighting for a cause, they're only as strong as the cause they're fighting for." Mr. Matthews said.

"Even I know next thing he says, real important." Marly said.

"What's the cause you're fighting for?"

Lollie looked up, "Friendship."
﹏﹏﹏﹏

Lollie and Noah sat at her bay window.

The three seniors including Mariah walked in.

Mariah sighed and sat down beside Lollie.

The two youngest siblings sat there with a blank expression.

Thor was the first to speak, "You know, that hole has put many people together."

"Just like it did us." Nikki added.

Mariah looked over at her siblings.

They've both have taken different routes. High school was hard, Mariah even changed when she first arrived.

"In the end, we all still had each other, no matter what." Francesca said.

"High school is though and as seniors, we are still finding it hard." Thor said.

The two still didn't budge.

Mariah sighed, "But we have each other to help us with everything we need. Whether it's with homework, friendships, or relationship. We've always been there for each other."

"Your friends will come around, they wouldn't take in high school without you."
﹏﹏﹏﹏

The next day in class the room was empty.

"Our classroom is empty. Oh, come on! Who does this?" Marly asked.

"Me." Mr. Matthews said.

"Okay, so what I want to ask now is why?" Marly asked.

"Everybody take a seat. Go on, go on, have a seat."

The students sat down on the floor.

"What have you learned in high school so far?" Mr. Matthews asked.

"We're not kings anymore." Lucas said.

"We're Abagail Adams Patriots." Riley said.

"Abagail Adams once said, "To be good and to do good is the whole duty of man."" Mr. Matthew said.

"Do good?" Don't you mean do well?" Marly asked.

"Do you know what the funny thing is about history, Ms. Evans? It repeats. I mean "do good." That, right up there, that's always gonna be my lesson plan.
Now, when the patriots looked out at this new undiscovered land, it was what?" Mr. Matthews asked.

"Rough and undeveloped, like us." Zay said.

"Very good, Mr. Babineaux, but they stuck together and they made it their new home. So will we. Let's fill this room. Let's fill this room with knowledge. What do you know?" Mr. Matthews asked.

Riley stood up, "I have faith that in a new place you can learn from the people who have already been there."

"Very good. Go get your desk." Mr. Matthews said.

When she walked out Maya held her hand out for Lollie.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa, Where are you going?" Mr. Matthews asked.

"In any new place, or old place, or any place at all, I stay with her." Maya said, "I'm always with her. But I knew that a long time ago."

Maya went to get her desk.

"Lucas, what do you know?" Mr. Matthews asked.

"There are stronger people than us here."

"What are you gonna do about it?" He asked.

"Get stronger." Zay said.

"Farkle?"

"There are smarter people than us here." He said.

"What are you gonna do about it?" He asked.

"I think you know."

Lollie and Noah still sat on the ground as Maya, Riley, Lucas, Zay, Farkle, and Smackle had their desk.

"Lollie?"

Lollie looked up at him and stood up, "Follow your heart."

"Because?"

"Friends come and go but the good ones will always help you when you need it."

Mr. Matthews smiled her way.

Lollie looked over at Noah and grabbed his hand.

"What about you Noah?"

Noah looked back at him.

He smiled, "Friends are forever, but siblings are for life."

"Go get your desk."

The two walked out of the room and grabbed their desk.

"All right, everybody, go get your desks." Mr. Matthews said.

Once everyone isn't the room had their desk he spoke again.

"In this room, we find out how history relates to your present and how you can't get by on the successes of your past. This is your new school, guys. Stick together. Do good. That's how you're gonna have your best future. In this room, I'm your teacher but we are going to discover this new land together." Mr. Matthews said.

"This is how he teaches?"
Marly asked.

Riley smiled, "Every day."

Marly stood up and headed towards the door.

"You going to get your desk, Miss. Evans?" Mr. Matthews asked.

"No, I'm going to get yours."
﹏﹏﹏﹏

The eight teens stood in the hole once again.

"Ready?" Maya asked.

Riley looked at her, "Ready."

"I'm glad you guys picked me and my friends." Riley said.

"We wish someone would've explained that more for us." Francesca said.

"You really put us through it." Lucas said.

"I know." Thor said.

"You messed with our heads."

"I did."

"We'll be better friends because of it."

"You will."

"Thank you."

"You're welcome. We'll be here for you guys anytime. You trying out for the football team?" Thor asked.

"Nah."

"Are you trying out for the football team?" He asked.

"Yeah!" They shouted.

"Good."

"Now that we're seniors and we've learned so much in this place." Francesca said, "We wanted to leave somebody a-"

Mariah approached the group, "Legacy?"

"Yeah, a legacy. Pass it on someday." Thor said.

The four seniors walked off.

"We will." Riley said.

"When we're kings." Maya said.
﹏﹏﹏﹏

Lollie sat at her bay window doodling when someone tapped on it.

She looked back and saw Lucas there. She unlocked the window and unlocked it.

He thanked her silently and sat beside her.

"I'm sorry." He said.

She didn't look up at him, "You said what you felt and I have to respect that."

Lucas sighed, he knew he messed up.

"Can we talk about it?"

Lollie looked at him, "There's nothing to talk about."

Lollie stood up and placed her sketchbook on the table.

"Well, I still want to apologize."

She didn't say anything.

"I'm really sorry Lollie, I completely understand if you don't want us to be together anymore. I could have be more mature about the situation."

Lollie sighed, "Yes, you could have."

"I'm sorry."

Lollie sat on her bed.

"I want to forgive you but I don't know if I should."

Lucas sat beside her, "I understand that."

Lollie looked over at him.

"You're one of my best friends Lollie and I've probably ruined that. So whenever your ready, let me know."

Lollie smiled at him, "I will."
