Lollie Parker

The three teens stood on top of the staircase watching others walk past.

"Look at all of these new people." Riley said.

"No." Maya said.

"Why "no"?" Riley asked.

"Because you're getting all interested in everybody, aren't you?" Maya asked.

"What's wrong with getting interested in people?" Riley asked.

"No." Maya repeated.

"Why "no"?"

"Because you're only supposed to be pretend interested in however many people we already know."

"You're only pretending to be interested in people?" Lollie asked.

"Yeah. Everyone's more comfortable that way. Watch." She said.

A girl walked past them.

"Hey, you." Maya said.

"Hey, you!"

Maya faced Lollie and Riley, "Now watch this. How are you?"

The girl smiled, "How are you?"

"No, I really mean it. How are you?" Maya asked.

"Back off." The girl said.

"Yeah, get out of my life."

"I look out at the sea of new students and would like to explore the potential of new friendships for us. What would you like?" Riley asked.

"I would like everyone to mind their own business." Lollie said.

"Don't you think that somewhere around here could be a wonderful new friend for us?" Riley asked.

"I would have to learn names! I'm still learning Zay." Maya said, "It's Zay, right?"

"That's sad, Maya." Lollie said.

"We are going to make one new friend. If we make one new friend every day for the rest of the year, you know what we'll have?" Riley asked.

"Lice. We'll have lice. I guarantee you." Maya said.

"It's great to have you back, Maya."

"Thanks. My hair is way too long to make new friends."

"So who's it gonna be? Who's the lucky person who's going to get blessed with our special kind of friendship?" Riley asked.

Lollie smiled, "I wouldn't force that on anybody."

"Watch me." Riley said.

She turned and faced a girl, "Hi! Good morning! My name is Riley Matthews and this is my friend Maya Hart and Lollie Parker."

"Sup?" Maya said.

Lollie only waved.

"I wanted to introduce myself to extend the warmest of invitations to be our new friend. I really like what you're wearing. Great hair, nice eyes, good knees." Riley said. "Be my friend?"

She faced Lollie and Maya, "Watch this, Maya. This is how new friendships are born."

"I don't like her at all." The girl said.

"She don't like me." Riley said.

"No, she doesn't." Lollie said, "What now?"

"Hi, Lollie." Riley said, "Who's this? A new friend of yours? Well, any new friend of Lollie is a great friend of mine."

The girl faced Lollie, "I don't like you either."

"Good."

Lollie walked away from the two and sat on the floor.

"Wow." The girl said and walked away.

Riley pouted and sat in between Lollie's legs; Maya resting her head on her shoulder.

"And they lived here for the rest of their lives." Maya said.

"Knock, knock." Riley said.

"Who's there?" Maya asked.

"Somebody doesn't like me." She said.

""Somebody doesn't like me" who?" Lollie asked.

"What's the difference? I don't have time for games." Riley said.

"You're being ridiculous." Maya said.

"Oh, great. Thank you so much. You fixed me forever." She said.

"Don't overreact to this. She didn't like me either. You'll only make it worse, okay?" Lollie said.

"We're out in the world now." Maya said, "You're gonna have to face little setbacks. You can't have everyone like you."

"Why not?"

"Because you can't control the world and you can't control other people in the world." Lollie said.

"The only thing you can control is your own reaction to what goes on." Maya said.

"You're right, and this is how I choose to react." She said.

Riley sat up and started hyperventilating. Lollie sighed and pulled Riley back down.

"What did I ever do to her, Lollie?" Riley asked.

"Who knows? Who cares? I didn't do anything and you didn't do anything. Let it go."

The bell rang and she sat up again.

"Oh, yay." Maya said.

"Maya, Lollie, I had the worst dream!" She looked up, "You were in my dream!"

"Don't dream about me. I don't like you."

She started hyperventilating again and Lollie pulled her back down.

"No, no, no, no, no." Lollie whispered.

The boys approached them, Smackle followed suit.

"How's it goin'?" Noah asked.

"Someone doesn't like Riley, my legs are asleep, Maya's legs are asleep, we have Health class. Oh, and let's not forget she doesn't like me either."

"Okay. Come on." Zay said.

He grabbed Riley's arms threw her over his shoulder and carried her to class.

Noah did the same with Maya but Farkle and Smackle didn't have the same idea and she ended up dragging Farkle to class.

"Your turn." Lucas said.

He squatted down in front of her.

She smiled and hopped onto his back.

She wrapped her arm around his shoulders.

"Why do you like me?" She asked.

She felt his heartbeat grow faster.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean... that night after the dance when I asked you out. What made you say yes?"

"Well... I like a lot of things about you, Lollie. I like your personality. You're very confident in yourself and you always try to make people happy, like Farkle. I also like that you have a good relationship with your family. You and Noah weren't always on the same page but look at you two now. I like that you always try and give people a chance, even if it takes time. I like how once you start something you're determined to get it done. I also think you're very very beautiful, that's a plus."

"Anything else?" She asked.

"There's a lot."

"Anything you don't like?"

"I don't like when you eat plain bagels. You could at least put butter on it."

The two of them laughed and she kissed his cheek.

The group had all made it to health and sat at a desk.

"Maybe you're right." Riley said, "Maybe I can't control who likes me or not, but there's more to life, like Health class. I am so excited for today's Health class."

Lollie faced the board and smiled.

""Our bodies, our friends."" She read.

"Yikes." Maya muttered.

"Oh, I'm sure that the teacher's sensitive take on life will be a lovely way to learn how our bodies work." Riley said.

She turned to face the front and saw a male teacher standing at the front. She quickly turned back to the girls.

"What's that?" She asked.

"All right, all you creepy little child-adults, settle down." The coach said, "Let's get this over with, huh?"

Riley quickly raised her hand in the air.

"Put your hand down, Sunshine. You'll all pass no matter what. You know why? 'Cause if I fail ya, I gotta meet your parents. I don't want to meet your parents. I don't want to meet you. All right. Let's talk about your bodies." He said.

Lollie heard something hit the floor.

She looked back and saw Farkle passed out on the floor.

"Yeah, I don't blame him." He said.

"Are you sure that you're the right person to teach us this?" Riley asked.

"Why don't you give me a chance? I may surprise ya."

"I want this to be taught to me in a delicate and sensitive manner."

"Yeah? Well, surprise."

"You can't control this either, Riles." Maya said.

"You gonna have to learn to understand, this world isn't always about you, Riley." Lollie said.

Farkle got off the ground and sat back in his seat.

Smackle smiled, "Welcome back, beloved."

"All right, everybody open your Health textbooks to page seventy-three." Coach said.

The class opened the book and another thud was heard.

Lollie held the book in the air and turned it sideways.

"Are they the only ones here that know what they're doing?"

All three Parker siblings walked into the apartment. Mariah opened the door and they saw Nona sitting at the dining room table.

"Where's mom?" Mariah asked.

"Out with your father."

The two youngest siblings furrowed their eyebrows.

"You know, they have lives outside the three of you, you know?"

Mariah nodded, "Well, talk to them. I don't want to hear anymore."

Mariah walked upstairs and into her room.

"What's she talking about?" Nona asked.

"Nothing." The two said.

"Oh, come on. Come join me."

Noah and Lollie looked at each other and headed towards the table.

The two of them sat down slowly.

"So... what's going on." She smiled.

"We are learning about our bodies." Noah said.

Fran sipped her coffee as a sign for them to continue.

"We're also learning about other people's bodies." Lollie said.

"Oh," Fran smiled, "I could teach you that."

"No, thank you." They said.

"Oh, come on. We can talk about how-"

The two of them covered their ears.

Fran sighed and waved her hands in their faces.

"Okay. I won't tell you what I know. I will tell you that things change."

Noah changed the subject, "Someone doesn't like, Lollie."

"I don't care."

"How could someone not like you, sweetheart?" Fran asked.

Lollie shrugged her shoulders, "I don't know and I don't care. It's just one less person I have to care about."

"Well, okay." Fran said.

"Okay?" Lollie questioned.

"I mean... if you don't care. There's nothing to worry about, is there?"

Lollie looked at Noah, "Good."
﹏﹏﹏﹏

Maya, Riley, Lollie walked into class today with everyone standing in front of the board.

Everyone moved away to reveal Mr. Matthews standing there.

Lollie sighed, "He said he didn't want to meet parents. That's was the only thing he wanted."

"Ya happy?" He asked.

"Do it." Riley said.

She rested her head on Maya's shoulder and she sang a song in her ear.

"So I said, "Hey, Fanucci, don't take this the wrong way."" He did. ""Can you be a little more sensitive in Health class?"" He can't. So, here I stand in front of you begging you to make this easy on me." Mr. Matthews said.

The group had sat down and Maya raised her hand.

"Put that hand down forever." He said.

"You have to answer my question about the body." She said.

"Maya, it's my father! He doesn't know anything." She said.

"He obviously knows something." Lollie said.

"I know things. What is the body? What does the body want? I'm gonna tell ya. Soup. Now you know everything. Goodnight!" He said.

Smackle raised her hand, "What do you want?" He asked.

"Smackle time, please." She said.

"Absolutely." He said.

"Hey, I thought it was "Farkle time."" Zay said.

"It is Farkle time." Farkle said, "It's always been Farkle time. It'll always be Farkle time. Farkle time is a worldwide phenomenon, a division of Farkle Enterprises and the incontrovertible essence of my soul."

Smackle turned around and blew Farkle a kiss.

"It's Smackle time from now on." He said.

She got up and stood in front of everyone, "Mr. Matthews is our teacher and our friend who always encourages us to pursue the subject matter."

"Not this time, baby."

"We will begin. On page seventy-three of your Health books, what they're trying to teach you is..." Smackle said.

Farkle passed out again as Smackle began to speak.

Noah covered his own ears and put his head down.

And Lollie, she continued to hold her book sideways.
﹏﹏﹏﹏

Noah stormed into the house and went into his room.

"What's wrong with him?" Bailey asked.

"Smackle taught us about everything."

"Huh?"

Lollie sat at the table and ate some grapes off of her mom's plate.

"We are in health class and we are learning more about our bodies."

"Well," Bailey started, "you should know the majority of the stuff, so should your brother. What's the problem?"

"Smackle went into grave details."

"Oh."

"I don't think anyone was really prepared for it."

"I still don't see what his malfunction is."

"Maya kept poking at his thigh. Every time she learned something about the male body she poked his thigh."

"Mmkay."

The doorbell rang and Lollie stood up, "If it's Smackle, give me a thumbs up."

She stood behind the door and opened it.

Bailey held her thumbs down.

Lollie peaked around the door and saw Maya and Farkle.

"Hey."

"Hey."

"Is your brother here?"

Lollie nodded, "He's probably screaming into his pillow."

Maya nodded and headed upstairs.

Farkle came inside and waved at Bailey, "Hello, Mrs. Parker."

"Hey, Farkle."

He faced Lollie, "We all are heading to Topanga's but we wanted to hang out here for a bit before we left."

"We'll be in my room."

Bailey and gave a thumbs up.

Lollie looked over her shoulder to make sure the door was closed.
﹏﹏﹏﹏

Farkle and Lollie sat in her bedroom as they painted stupid pictures.

Lollie flipped her picture around to show him.

"What is that?" He laughed.

"It's a frog."

"That is the ugliest thing I've ever seen."

She gasped, "I worked really hard on this."

"Mines is better."

He flipped his painted over to show the rainbow and a couple of clouds.

"Yours is so basic."

The two of them laughed.

Someone knocked on the door and Lollie stood up.

She opened the door and saw Maya and Noah hand in hand.

"We're ready when you guys are." Noah said.

Lollie looked back at Farkle whose hands were covered in paint.

She looked down at herself, her shorts cover in green paint.

"I think we're ready."
﹏﹏﹏﹏

The four of them entered Topanga's, Zay, Riley, Lucas, and Smackle were already there.

"Lucas, what would you do if there was somebody in your life who didn't like you?" Riley asked.

"I'd go like this." He said and smiled.

"That would work for you?" Lollie asked.

He looked over at Smackle and smiled; she giggled.

"Smackle!" Farkle said.

"Do it."

Farkle smiled at her and she started to giggle weirdly.

"Thanks, honey." Farkle said.

"Zay?"

"Riley?"

"What would you do if there was somebody in your life who didn't like you?"

"I'd move to New York." He said.

"Lollie, what do you do?"

"I don't care. Why would I care about someone so much they have that much control over my life."

"Maya, what would you do?"

"I just don't care as much." She said.

"Well, you cared when you used to be me."

"Yeah, and it was exhausting, but I'm better now, Riles. You want to feel better? Don't care so much."

"I don't know how to do that." Riley said.

"I care that people like me. Do people like me?" Smackle asked.

"Of course they like you." Lollie said.

"They do?" Smackle asked, "You like me, Lucas?"

"Sure." He said.

She pointed to Farkle, "He's sitting right next to me!"

"Riley, there's not a person in this world that wouldn't like you once they got to know you." Noah said.

"Oh, well, that's very nice of you, Noah, but the more me I was, the faster she ran away." She said.

"Come on. Who cares about her? Let's think about something else." Farkle said.

"Yeah, maybe if we move on and think about something else, then we could get on with our lives..." Lollie said, her smiled flattened, "she said, knowing that was crazy."

"Hey, guys, did you know that astronomers calculate that there are one billion trillion stars in the observable universe?" Smackle asked.

"One billion trillion? Well, that's just amazing." Zay said.

"I thought it was less." Lucas said.

"I know!" Noah smiled, "It gives you so much to think about."

"Other than whatever's going on in our little lives." Lucas said.

"A billion trillion stars?" Maya asked.

"You could give them all Riley names is what you could do." Lollie said, "I'll get you started. Twinkly, Sparkly, Twinkly. There's three."

"It certainly shows how vast the universe is and how small we are." Farkle said.

"Hey, you're right. We're all just specks. That's all we are. And that other speck doesn't like me!" Riley pouted.
﹏﹏﹏﹏

The Parker siblings sat around the dining room table eating breakfast.

"How's are guys feeling?" Bailey asked.

"Tired." They said.

"Today hasn't even started yet. You'll all perk up, especially Noah and Lollie. You guys have health today."

The two of them let their heads hit the table.
﹏﹏﹏﹏

"My good years are behind me, I have eighty-star names to go, and I go to a high school where somebody doesn't like me." Riley said.

"Look on the bright side." Lollie said.

"Bright Side!" Riley smiled, "Seventy-nine, to go."

"And now, this." Maya said.

"One of the most intricate parts of the human body is..." Mr. Matthews flipped through the book, "No!" He shouted and threw it on the ground, "I want to talk to you guys today about the human foot. Questions?"

"See, what we have here is a man with nothing to say. Sad." Zay said.

"Give up, Matthews?" Coach asked.

"Okay."

"It's not so easy to explain the wonders of the human body to the freshman class, huh?" Coach asked.

"Or anyone." Mr. Matthews added.

"So did he teach it to you in the delicate and sensitive manner you requested, Sunshine" Coach asked Riley.

"Not quite, but it's out of my control. Everything is." Riley said.

"Wrongo!" He said.

"Wrongo?" Riley asked.

"I've been doing this twenty years. It is never graceful. But it's always important. 'Cause after you get past all your laughter and your embarrassment, we all arrive at one thing: you get this one mind and you get this one body. That's what's completely yours to control. How you take care of it, how you treat it, how you nourish it, what becomes of it. It's completely up to you. Especially when it seems like nothing else is." Coach said

"Boy, do you have the right teacher here? Uh, you know what else there is about the human foots?" Mr. Matthews asked.

He ran out of the classroom.

"They do... Yeah, they all do that. All right, here is the thing about Health. This is what makes you healthy: whenever it seems like everything else is just out of control, you need to be able to rely on your own minds and your own bodies to be whoever you are." The coach said, "'Cause knowing who you are, that's the best control you could possibly have. So, make good decisions about yourselves. That's the best thing I can teach you."

"He's pretty good, Riley." Noah said.

"Yeah. Maybe I should just control me. Maybe that's okay." Riley said.

"What about "Our bodies, our friends"?" Smackle asked.

"What about page seventy-three?" Farkle asked.

He passed out and fell onto the floor.

"Oh, yeah. Listen, someday, way down the line, please, if you make more of yourselves... teach them the same thing. They'll thank you for it." He said.

"Thank you." Riley said.

"Anytime, Sunshine."
﹏﹏﹏﹏

The next day the group stood outside Topanga's holding red balloons.

"Why did you make us set our alarms for so early?" Smackle asked, "I had such a good dream. You know what I was dreaming of?"

She looked up at Lucas and smiled.

"How you doin'?" She asked.

"We're holding balloons, Riley." Zay said.

"Why are we holding balloons?" Lucas asked.

"I know that sometimes I can be a handful." Riley said.

"No." They all replied, except for Smackle.

"Yes, yes, you are."

"But I learned something and I want to share it with you guys. This is our letting go ceremony. We will let go of all of the things that we think we can control but we really don't." Riley said.

"Well, I'm not doin' it." Zay said.

"You don't control that. Except each other. We will never let go of each other." Riley said.

"See?" Farkle said.

"Okay, everybody. Let go of your balloons." She said.

They all let go of their balloons and watched them float away.

"What happens now?" Noah asked.

"Well, whatever life does to us, maybe we can't control it, but we can be who we are and... control how we react to it." Riley said.
﹏﹏﹏﹏

Riley, Maya, and Lollie walked up to the girl who stood at her locker.

"Hi." Riley smiled.

"Yeah, I still don't like you." She said.

"Well, I like you." Riley said.

Maya and Riley walked away, Lollie stood behind.

"I don't like you either."

"Good."

Lucas walked up to the two, "Ready?"

Lollie looked up at him and back towards the girl.

"Ready." She smiled.

Oh, how people loathed Lollie.
﹏﹏﹏﹏

Noah and Lollie sat in the living room watching the news with Bailey.

"And in local news, one Greenwich Village family has been found guilty of four counts of tax evasion." The news anchor said, "When asked to comment, they said they would have gotten away with it, except their daughter chose not to like the wrong people at school. Just another reason everybody should like everybody."

The door opened and they all looked at Fran.

The two looked back at Bailey.

"What did you do?" Lollie asked.

"Nothing. Topanga and I did nothing."
