Lollie Parker
Lollie sat at her bay window looking outside as she ate the most disgusting bowl of noodles ever.
Maya knocked on the window and allowed herself and Riley inside.
"Seven hours till school is over!" Maya shouted, "You know what your mom does?"
"She uses her intelligence to help the powerless against the powerful. She's also the person who birthed me so... that might be important too." Lollie answered.
"Yeah. She's really somethin'." Riley said.
"My dad is this artist who can read people and is a bright guy. He didn't have to father me but he did."
"Mm. He's cute." Maya said.
"What am I gonna do?"
"You'll do stuff." Maya said.
"What?"
"Ollie, the great thing about being us, we don't have to worry about being them." Riley said.
"Too late. I got into some late-night thought and now they are my twenty-four-seven thoughts."
"Lollie, if you're trying to tell us how great your parents are, we know. You're very lucky to have them. Not everybody does." Maya said.
"Maybe they're the lucky ones."
"Why?"
"They're Bailey and Finn and... I'm just their little shadow, who has these two other siblings who know what they're doing with their lives and I'm sitting here eating chicken noodles because Noah ate the last of the beef ones." Lollie said, "I'm not like them. I don't think I'll ever be like them."
There was a knock on the door. Bailey peaked her head inside.
"I made breakfast but it seems like you're already eating. Beef?"
Lollie nodded.
"Okay. You girls better hurry to school."
They nodded and Bailey closed the door.
"Why'd you lie?" Riley asked.
"I eat chicken noodles when I'm sad."
﹏﹏﹏﹏
"Ferdinand Magellan. What did he do?" Mr. Matthews asked.
"First bull with a last name!" Maya said.
"First man to circumnavigate the globe." Noah said.
Lollie looked back at him, "Why are you smart?"
"Huh?"
"Why are you smart?"
"Because my dad taught me? What are you getting at?"
Lollie didn't say anything and faced the front.
"Everyone thought the world was flat. Why?" Mr. Matthews asked.
"They could only see to the horizon." Lucas said.
"They were too scared to go out. They thought they'd fall off the world. I don't blame 'em." Riley said.
"Well, what about you guys?" Mr. Matthews asked, "What's your horizon line? Write down the one thing in life you consider impossible. Where do you fall off the Earth?"
Lollie ripped a piece of paper out of her binder and wrote, "Being as successful as my family."
"Well, it looks like everyone found something pretty easily. That's too bad. Because when you think you can't do something, your world is as flat as a piece of paper. So, crumple them up. Now, look at 'em. You hold your world in your hands. Nothing's impossible if you take a shot. So, take a shot."
Everyone but Farkle and Lollie threw their paper.
"Take a shot, Farkle." Mr. Matthews said.
"Oh, that's okay, sir."
"Why not?"
"Well, I'd only miss."
"Do you mind?"
Farkle handed Mr. Matthews his paper ball, "Hey, it's not like it's a big surprise."
"Athlete." You don't think you could be an athlete like Lucas if you tried?"
"I'm not sure you can be as good as someone just because you want to, sir."
"Well... You'll never know unless you take a shot." Mr. Matthews said.
Farkle threw the paper ball at Maya by an accident and Maya just smiled at him.
"Why are you smiling at me so pretty?"
"Because I want the last thing you ever see to be nice." Maya said.
She tried to go after Farkle but Noah stopped her and put her back in her seat.
Mr. Matthews faced Lollie who gave him a toothy smile, "I rather take the shot now."
Mr. Matthews stuck his hand out and she sighed. She placed the crumpled piece of paper in his hands and he unballed it.
"Huh?"
"Huh." She sighed.
Mr. Matthews balled her paper back up and placed it on her desk.
"Shoot it."
Lollie took the paper and shot it in the trash.
"Okay, so... Farkle has just given us a great idea for an assignment."
As the rest of them groaned, Farkle cheered.
"Farkle, you're gonna become an athlete." Mr. Matthews said.
"Mr. Friar..."
"Oh, no."
"Your assignment is to help him get there. I'm sorry if this changes what you thought was impossible." Mr. Matthews said.
"No, that's what I had."
"Ha Ha."
"That's what I had."
"Ms. Parker... you impossibility is very big possibility, you know?"
"How? My mom is like this crazy intelligent and bright person. My father that different story, he's still bright and smart and talented. What am I?"
"Boring." Noah said.
Lollie faced him and smiled and hit him really hard in the arm.
"I don't understand."
"Maybe some people do just fall off the world, Mr. Matthews."
"What do you mean?"
Before she had time to answer school bell rings.
"Look, it's just today's thing. It'll be gone tomorrow." Riley said.
"The only thing going away is who I thought I could be. It feels like I'm falling off the earth or something." Lollie said.
"Now? You're falling off the world now?" Mr. Matthews asked.
"I can't compete with my parents or my siblings."
"In what?"
"Life." She answered, "I didn't know Noah was that smart until he walked into the classroom and don't get started on Mariah, you know she's taking AP classes and she might be able to graduate early because she's so smart. I can't compete with any of them."
Lollie stood up and walked out the classroom. Maya and Riley quickly following after.
﹏﹏﹏﹏
Riley and Maya followed Lollie all the way home.
"Here? You think this is falling off the face of the Earth? You're own home?" Riley asked.
"My mom is constantly on her feet. Superintended and works at the bakery with your mom and helps us. The one things she can't do is bake."
"She works at the bakery." Maya said.
"Duh, but she can't bake. She's only the waitress remember."
Lollie opened the stove and smoke came from it.
"Apparently, neither can you," Maya said, "but see if you can't do it and your mom can't do it. That means she's not good at everything."
The door kicked opened as Bailey came inside.
"Hey, girls. I was just with your mom Riley and she gave me this recipe and I made it at the bakery and let me tell you... you're all gonna love it."
Lollie sent her mom a tight-knit smile, "Great."
"I mean, I didn't think it was gonna be that good but if you actually take your time to read something it's good!"
She handed the girls a fork, "Dig in. I'm heading upstairs. I have work to do." She said and kissed the top of Lollie's head.
"It can't be that good." Riley said.
They all stuck their fork into the soft-looking cake and sighed.
"You're right it isn't good." Lollie said, "It's delicious."
﹏﹏﹏﹏
"Here?" Maya asked, "You think this is falling off the face of the Earth?"
They all stood in the isle of the library.
"No one read as much as I do. My dad doesn't read at all. If I become this successful writer, maybe, just maybe, I could better than my dad. Forget my mom."
Lollie picked a dictionary off of the self, "This is gonna help."
They sat there for thirty minutes and nothing came to her mind.
"Looks good to me, champ." Maya said.
"Ha ha." Lollie said, "I don't get it. I read all the time and I can't write a sentence."
Someone sat in front of her, "Thought I'd find you here." Finn smiled.
"Did you?"
"Can you read this for me? It's for your sister, a somewhat of a promotion on her internship. She needed someone to write why she was good at what she does and how she could improve."
"Did she?"
Lollie held the paper in front of her and read it.
"You wrote this?" She asked.
He nodded.
"About Mariah?"
"Is it not good?"
"It's great." She muttered.
"Okay, good. Thank you, Lollie. See you at home."
She sighed and let her head fall against the table.
﹏﹏﹏﹏
Riley and Maya sat at Lollie's bay window and watched her pace around her room eating those chicken noodles again.
"I don't understand. They are literally good at everything."
"Calm down, Ollie."
"She bakes now and I know she's gonna make something for dinner. He writes and we can't forget he's a painter and Mariah got a promotion and you won't believe what Noah so happily texted the family group chat."
Somehow, someway, he is now volunteering at the pediatric care.
"What do I do?" She asked.
"You make your bed." Riley said.
"Not really. All I do is just pull the comforter up over everything."
She pulled down the comforter to show us the mess on her bed, which somehow included Baloo.
The dog barked at them and left the room.
"Lollie-"
"I can't compete with them. I have reached my personal horizon line. There's nothing I can do to change that."
"Honey, you gotta get 'em out of your head." Maya said.
"I can't. I know all of their stories. They keep on repeating over and over. College was great for them.
"Were they always so perfect?" Riley asked.
"What?"
"Sure, they're great now, but how were they at our age?" Maya asked, "I bet they were just as messed up and confused as we are."
"Maybe we should see that for ourselves." Riley said.
"How would we do that?" Lollie asked.
"You said they told you their stories a million times. Maybe if we try and pick one and imagine them at our age, we'll discover how they really were."
"Riley, how many times have I told you to stop being so innocent?" Maya asked.
"Fine, I'm going to tell you two a story. So, concentrate hard and maybe we'll see how they were."
"Riles, I'm not gonna see your parents as kids because I concentrate."
"Once Upon a Time, there was a Bailey and Finn, in college."
"It's not like someone recorded everything they did." Maya said.
"Concentrate!" Lollie said, "And one day, Bailey went over to Finn's apartment..."
﹏﹏﹏﹏
"May I ask you a personal question?" Young Bailey asked.
"You tell a good story, Lollie." Maya said.
"Sure." Young Finn said.
"Why do you always come to the library to do literally anything? I've even seen you eat here. Why?"
"It's peaceful here. Better than my joint place with my roommates."
"I see."
"Do you think it was love at first sight?" Riley asked.
"I don't know. I doubt it."
"Yeah. I mean having other people living with you is great and all but then they start doing whatever they want whenever they want."
"Look at 'em!" Riley smiled, "They love each other."
"Your dad's adorable." Maya said.
"Maya!"
"Hey, Finn, how you doin'?" Maya asked.
"He can't hear you Maya. It's only a story." Lollie explained.
"Look at this." Finn said, "This is a book that I always look at."
"It's literally only pictures."
"Not just pictures. Art. From different artists. I want to be in a book like this when I become a successful artist."
"I could never do that."
"Sure you could. If you gave it a try."
"No, I really couldn't. I'm like tone-deaf when it comes to art."
"No. No. Everyone is an artist in some way. Like... dancers and doctors, I consider them artists."
"Doctors?"
"Yeah... they do all this cool stuff with patients all the time. They change people's lives. If it moves you it's art."
"Ollie?"
"Yeah?"
"They were kids just like us." Maya smiled.
"Technically, yeah. I can see how you can get that vibe. I can't paint but if you can consider being in the education field art. Go for it."
"It is... teaching is art."
"Look at him! Your dad's as weird as you." Riley said.
"Yeah, he kind of is."
"But she's great even then." Lollie said.
"Yeah. Tough act to follow."
"Art is something everyone is good at. Even if it's finger-painting." Young Finn smiled.
"Interesting."
"Even when they were kids, my parents were still perfect."
"I don't know what to say." Maya said.
"There's nothing you can say, really."
﹏﹏﹏﹏
"If it helps, it seems like your dad was just as weird as you. You're just like him, Lollie. And he turned out great." Maya said.
"But did you see my mom? She was completely together even then. What hope do I have?" She asked.
﹏﹏﹏﹏
"How can you beat the impossible?" Lucas asked.
"Can you? Did you? Is Farkle an athlete now?" Riley asked.
"Not as good as Lucas." Noah said.
"Oh. Well, will you ever be?" Riley asked.
"Doesn't have to be."
"You don't have to be a great athlete to like the game." Farkle said.
"Oh, really?" Mr. Matthews asked.
"Yeah. The fun of the game is running the bases." Farkle said.
Maya asked, "Farkle, you actually ran?"
She gave a high-five to Farkle.
"Nothin'."
"I don't get the moment, but I'm very disappointed." Farkle said.
"Well, what happens if you get home and realize you're not as good as the rest of the team?" Lollie asked.
"You keep playing." Lucas said.
"It's a team sport, Lollie. You just run the bases. The rest of your team will help you get home." Farkle told her.
﹏﹏﹏﹏
"You know, when you walked me through their story, it's amazing to see how much you and your dad are alike. Two artists." Maya said.
"Yeah, I'm definitely his daughter."
"But that's not the only story, Lollie. There's gotta be other stories about your mom." Riley said.
"She's perfect in every story."
"Yeah?" Maya questioned, "Tell us another one and we'll see."
"Maya, I don't wanna tell you two any more stories. They make me feel sad. They make me want to eat bad chicken noodles."
"Look, maybe if we go back, we can find something else. There's gotta be something that makes them goofy like us." Maya said.
"I do know that there were other bay windows." She said.
"Really? Tell it to us." Maya said.
"Once Upon a Time, there was another bay window."
"Now this sounds like a good story." Riley said.
﹏﹏﹏﹏
"So I thought about your whole, "everyone's an artist" thing." Young Bailey said.
"That's good." Young Finn said.
"I want to show you what I did. It's gonna be great. It's kinda like a small, tiny, thing."
"Small, tiny, things can be art."
"What's this story?" Maya asked.
"What's the difference? My mom will still be perfect."
"You're gonna love it."
"I hope so." Young Finn smiled and sat in the chair.
Young Bailey had a CD player on as she used different condiments to paint on a large canvas she also dances which Maya imitated.
"The way. Watch her. The way the ketchup brews. The way. Watch her. The way the mayonnaise drips." The CD recording of her voice said.
Young Bailey picked up and a large bottle of mustard and squeezed the entire bottle of her white shirt.
"Watch her. As she brews in the yellow mustard."
"Lollie..."
"Wow. She's goofier than he is."
"She is." Lollie smiled.
"Isn't that great?" Riley asked.
"Watch her. Watch her as she paints the canvas yellow."
Maya faced Lollie, "Lollie, she's you."
"Yeah. She is."
"You're both of them." Riley said.
"I am."
"Yeah. Okay." Young Finn said and turned the CD player off, "Yes. It's art. Strange and grossly smelling, but it's art in some way."
"I'm glad you think so. Took me a week to come up with."
"Took you a week to come up with this?"
"Uh, yeah."
"That's great... super proud..."
"I think it's unique."
"It's unique. They're unique. My siblings are unique. I'm unique."
﹏﹏﹏﹏
Riley and Maya left awhile ago.
It was time for the Parker family dinner but this time with Bailey's new dessert.
"Looks great." Finn smiled.
"I'm glad you think so. I made it myself."
Lollie looked around the time.
Everyone was different and even if Lollie thought she was out of place in the family, the black sheep almost, she knew they were all good, great, amazing, unique in their own type of way.
"Lollie, sweetie, are you okay?" Bailey asked.
"Yeah... I'm okay. Great even."
Bailey smiled, "Well. How was everyone's day."
"Well, since you asked," Noah started, "before Farkle learned what teamwork actually was it took him seventeen times to hit a baseball."
Lollie loved them. That's all that mattered.
"I mean I can't play a sport, but seventeen times to hit a ball? Couldn't be me."
