Lollie Parker
The Parker siblings stood in front of the train station and no matter who came up they were stopping them.
"Look, here's the train and nobody has stopped you from getting on." Noah said.
Mariah looked over and hit him in the back of his head.
"It's whatever, the train is here so let's just get on." Lollie said walking towards the train.
"Hey isn't that Lollie's brother?" A faint voice asked.
Lollie turned her head and found Maya and Riley looking at the three.
Lollie pushed the two into the train without Maya or Riley coming towards them.
"Excited about the subway ride I see." Mariah said sitting down.
"Very." Lollie said sitting down.
﹏﹏﹏﹏
Lollie sat in her regular seat in history with Lucas in front of her.
"Belgium, eighteen thirty-one-" Mr. Matthews said starting the lesson.
"No!" Riley shouted.
"In eighteen thirty-one, Belgium-"
"No!"
"Riley?"
"What's my thing?" She asked him.
"What's your thing?" He repeated.
"What is my going to be, dad? Am I gonna be okay?"
"Riley, listen to me very carefully."
"Okay."
"In eighteen thirty-one, Belgium declared its independence from the Netherlands." Mr. Matthews whispered to her.
"What will people be thinking of me if I end up living in a subway?" She asked.
"What if nothing happens for her, sir? Riley can't end up like that.
She's my meal ticket!" Maya said.
"What the? I just saw you, girls, at breakfast!"
"My education should not be based on your daughter's moods." Farkle said.
"Ditto." Lollie muttered.
"Neither should mine, but it is! Guys, a daughter asks her father, "what's my thing?" Mr. Matthews asked, "This question will resonate in the hearts of all parents from the moment it's asked until the day their child feels comfortable in the world.
Pretty soon you're all going to join the workforce. What's your thing? What do you aspire to? How will you affect people? That's the only history that matters."
"Thank you, dad." Riley said.
"Thank you, dad." Farkle repeated.
"All right, guys, tell you what. Let's split the class into two separate businesses and see how you do for yourselves. We'll see if anyone's got anything to worry about, okay? Excellent." Mr. Matthews explained.
"What will our companies be?" Riley asked.
"Doesn't matter. Uh, Muffins, okay? You two are going to be "Riley and Farkle muffins. That'll be your thing for the week." He said.
"I already got my thing. Riley is gonna be a success and I'm gonna sponge off her until she gets sick of me." Maya said.
"We will never get sick of you." Riley said leaning towards her.
"I am set for life! All right, let's get out there and make some money cash, cabbage, cheddah-cheeeze!" Farkle said with his voice filled with excitement.
"Those are your values, Farkle? What else should a company value but profits?" Riley asked.
"If I had a company, I'd treat my employees well and make sure we did right by our customers." Riley said.
"You are everything that's wrong with this country." Farkle told her.
"Then you do have a company, Lucas." Mr. Matthews said.
"Hart, Friar, and Parker, muffins." He said.
Lollie looked up at Lucas. Maya faced the front.
"No." Maya said.
"No?" Mr. Matthews said looking at her.
"It's already bad enough that I have to work with Lucas, now I've got to work with little-" Maya started but Lollie took her chance to actually "stand up" for herself.
"Maya Hart," Lollie chuckled, "not only I cannot stand working with you either I also can't stand how you treat people because of your own insecurities, but it's okay we all have them, some more than others."
The class fell into silence.
Mr. Matthews decided to continue on like nothing happened.
"So these two competing companies will hire the rest of you guys as employees. Everyone else in school will be your customers." Mr. Matthews said.
"Let's see what happens." Lollie said sitting back in her seat.
"Here's what happens, we crush you. We will be bajillionaires, and you will eat your words using plastic cutlery." Farkle said.
"You're cute when you're menacing." Maya told him with a smile.
"I don't know what to do now." Farkle said looking at Maya.
"I know."
﹏﹏﹏﹏
Lollie really didn't want anyone at her home especially since Maya didn't want to come along to help her and Lucas with the muffins.
"Winter Juniper Parker!" Her mother's voice boomed down the hallway as soon as she and Lucas walked in.
"Who is that?" Lucas asked.
"I told you before you and Noah left to clean all of the paint that you had last night and you two didn't! Want to know something else? Your teacher called, he said that you said something to Maya Hart! Lollie, you can't talk about others when you have your own personal problems-" Bailey stopped when she saw Lollie was with an unfamiliar boy.
The two looked at Lollie's mother not know what to do, especially Lollie.
"Oh, hi I'm Mrs. Parker. Lollie's mom."
"Lucas Friar."
"Oh right the muffins. Well, you two have fun with that."
Her mother ran back up the stairs with embarrassment for her and her daughter.
Lollie walked towards the table with the bag of muffins and sat down.
"What did she mean? You can't talk about others when you..." Lucas waited for her response.
"She's just crazy." Lollie told him and grabbed a biscuit for her and Lucas.
Lollie looked over at Lucas and she sighed.
"I have dyslexia, it just means that some of my letters are backwards."
Lucas looked up and Lollie wanting her to continue.
"My brother's friend has it too."
"Is there anything you can do to fix it?" Lucas asked her.
"Just got to continue reading."
"You read a lot?"
Lollie stood up and walked upstairs with Lucas trailing behind her.
The two enter Lollie's room and Lucas's gaze was on the wall.
"I keep every single book in my room." She said pointing at the wall full of books.
"How many books do you have?"
"Roughly one hundred fifty-two."
Lucas looked around Lollie's room when he looked down at her bed and saw two books.
"The Fault in Our Stars and Pride and Prejudice." He said picking the two books off of her bed.
"Which has more pages?" He asked.
"Pride and Prejudice has four hundred and thirty-two pages and Fault in Our Stars has three hundred and thirteen pages."
"You got a favorite book?"
"The Giver." Lollie said sitting at her bay window with the book in her hands.
Lucas put the two books back on the bed and sat beside Lollie.
"You really like to read don't you?"
"I've learned to like it more and more."
The two sat in a comfortable silence.
"Hey Lollie, mom said that you have to get ready for dinner." Mariah said walking in.
"Alright."
With that Mariah left and Lucas stood up.
"That's my cue to leave. I'll see you at school tomorrow Lollie."
"Bye Lucas."
He went out through her bay window and Lollie walked downstairs for dinner.
﹏﹏﹏﹏
At school, Farkle and Riley had only one muffin from her batch left and Lucas, Maya, and Lollie sat in with more than two baskets full of muffins.
"Last muffin from this batch." Farkle said waving it in the air.
"Why are their muffins so white?" Maya asked.
"One dollar." Riley said.
"Hold on. I don't think so." Farkle said grabbing the muffin from Riley.
"What are you doing, Farkle?" Riley asked.
"It's the law of supply and demand, Riley. We supply, they demand. Let's find out what our last muffin is worth to them." Farkle said waving it back in the air.
"Dollar and a quarter!" A voice said.
"Dollar fifty." Another goes.
"Hey! What's so great about their muffins? We've got plenty of muffins right here." Lucas told the crowd.
They looked back and the muffins on the other table and turned back to Riley and Farkle.
"Two dollars."
"Two fifty!"
"I'll give you my brother!" The same voice went and Maya banged her head on the table.
﹏﹏﹏﹏
"All right, progress reports. What's up in make-believe corporate America?" Mr. Matthews asked.
"We started with a hundred muffins, made each with all-natural and organic ingredients." Lucas explained to the class.
"And you selected these ingredients because?" Mr. Matthews asked.
"Because that's the right and responsible thing to do." Lucas told him.
"You really believe that?" Lollie asked.
"I dunno! You spend a day with this guy." Maya shouted.
"So far we've sold fourteen muffins at a dollar each." Lucas told Mr. Matthews.
"Okay, how much do they cost you?" Mr. Matthews asked.
"They didn't cost us anything to make." Lucas said.
"How's that possible?"
"His mother gave us money and Lucas, Maya, and I went to get them." Lollie told Mr. Matthews.
"She wanted us to sell healthy food." Lucas explained.
"How's that workin' out for us so far, Huckleberry?" Maya asked.
"As soon as we sell them all, I'll pay her back." Lucas told them, "I stand by our product, sir."
"I do too. They're everywhere." Maya said.
"How are your profits, Friar?" Farkle asked.
"Let me teach my class, Farkle, okay?" Mr. Matthews asked, "I decide what to say and when I'm gonna say it, and I decide who to call on and what I'm gonna ask them!"
"How were my profits, Friar?" Lucas asked.
"Yes!" Mr. Matthews shouted.
"Well, I have those right here, sir." Lucas said.
Lucas looked down at the paper and it had a big fat zero on it.
"None." He whispered.
"I'm sorry, what?" Farkle asked.
"None. And it's not right, sir. Our muffins are good for you." Lucas explained.
"I'm sorry, what?" Farkle asked again.
"None!" Lucas shouted.
"We can't even give them away." Maya said.
Maya picked up a muffin and threw it, someone caught it and threw it back accidentally hitting Lollie which got a laugh out of Maya.
"All right, let's talk about a real make-believe company." Farkle said getting up with Riley behind him.
"Farkle's muffins!"
"Riley and Farkle muffins." Riley said.
"Yeah, keep tellin' yourself that." Farkle said, "Unlike our competitors, our profits are through the roof, and so are our employees."
"Why are they like that?" Mr. Matthews asked.
"They ate the product, sir." Farkle said.
"Riley?" Mr. Matthews said.
"Everybody seems to like our muffins, dad." She said with a huge smile.
"Oh, my sweet innocent child. Can't you see why?"
"Because they're filled with love."
"I don't think that's what they're filled with, Riley." Maya said.
"Why do they come out so white, Farkle?" Riley asked him.
"Because they're 100% carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen." Farkle explained.
"Lollie?" Mr. Matthews asked.
"Sugar." She smiled.
"Sugar! They're all sugar! Just one big sugar cube!" Farkle said with insanity in his voice.
"What?" Lucas questioned, "Ours are oatmeal, honey, and locally-harvested berries."
"Farkle, you said all-natural!" Riley shouted.
"Sugar!"
"You said organic." Riley said.
"Sugar!"
"You said delicious."
"Sugar!" The class shouted.
"Farkle, we're a business." Riley said.
"Businesses do not just mislead their customers to make a little bit of money!" Farkle told her.
"These muffins are pure evil." Riley said holding it in her hand.
"Are you gonna eat that because if you're not gonna eat that I would eat that right now is what I would do is I would eat that right now is what I would do." The girl they saw earlier rambled.
"You know how you succeed, Riley? You give the people what they want." Farkle asked.
"That's why we're a success and they're not." Farkle said pointing at the three.
"This isn't fair, Mr. Matthews! I had to listen to Lucas and his mother talk about "Good eatin'" and "wholesome livin'" and "the natural cornucopia of the earth's bounty"" Maya said mocking Lucas.
"Have you ever even heard me talk?" Lucas asked her.
Maya turned him around and "Huh-hur-rrrred" right in his face.
"Wow." Lucas said.
"It isn't fair!" Maya said.
"What isn't fair?" Lucas asked.
"That I'm not on their team!" Maya said.
"Maya, what we did isn't okay." Riley told her, "But I didn't know and I'm not going down for this." She continued.
"I'll talk."
"To who? To everyone who loves our muffins? Enjoy the taste of success, Riley." Farkle said, "It's sweet."
"Not to me. I have a very bitter taste in my mouth." Riley said.
"You must've eaten one of ours." Lollie said leaning up against Lucas.
"Maya, Lollie, you played fair. We didn't. We have no integrity. You do." Riley said.
"And what does that get them?" Farkle asked, "We can buy and sell their business. In fact, I like the sound of that. Yeah! I propose a merger between Riley and Farkle's muffins and Hart, Friar, and Parker muffins."
"Why the merger, Farkle?" Mr. Matthews asked him.
"We both have what we each need, Mr. Matthews. We have profits. They have integrity. I'm buyin' it!" Farkle explained.
"My integrity is not for sale." Lucas said.
"Mine is." Maya said raising her hand.
"Maya!" Lucas said.
"We owe your mother a hundred bucks." Lollie said pushing herself off of Lucas.
"Put 'er there, partner!" Lucas said shaking Farkle's hand.
"Our new company will be called "Farkle." Your names are no longer part of the company." Farkle said.
"Why not?" Lollie asked walking towards the two boys.
"What's the first thing that happens after a merger, daddy?" Riley asked.
"What's the first thing that happens after a merger, daddy?" Farkle repeated.
"Downsizing. When two companies come together, employees become vulnerable." Mr. Matthews explained.
"Don't tell him!" Riley said.
"Riley, I think he already knows." Mr. Matthews told her.
"Lucas, fire half of the company. Start with Lollie." Farkle demanded.
"Then that wouldn't be half, now would it Farkle." Lollie said.
A knock on the door stopped Farkle from continuing on.
Lollie walked towards the door to reveal her sister.
"You!" Farkle shouted.
"You come here and be fired with Lollie." Farkle went on.
Lollie looked back at her sister and shrugged her shoulders and pulled inside.
"Fire them, Lucas." Farkle demanded.
"Why do I have to do that?" Lucas asked.
"Because you're all full of that Texas "gee willikers" hooey. You charm people. So you'll be the face of the company and I'll be the behind-the-scenes hermit genius." Farkle said.
"Mr. Matthews?" Lucas pleaded.
"How do you argue with that?" Mr. Matthews asked.
"Always liked you, Matthews. You got moxie." Farkle said.
"Thanks, chief!" Mr. Matthews said.
"Mariah?" Lucas said walking towards Lollie's sister.
"Yes?"
Mariah was only there to tell Lollie one simple thing that one could not mess up unless you're Noah.
"You're fired."
"Good." Ria said.
She turned towards Lollie and placed the twenty-five dollars in her hand.
"Here's money for food and the key, nobody is gonna be home until midnight because of Noah's stupid game and before you ask, I'm only going because Jacob's going." Ria whispered in her ear.
Who's Jacob, well your guess is as good as Lollie's.
With that, she walked out.
"Now fire Lollie." Farkle said laughing.
Lucas looked at Lollie who was already looking at him. He tried not to say anything stupid around her because he thought she was gonna judge him, even though she wasn't.
"Lollie?"
"Lucas Friar?"
He still looked down at her, her face showing no emotions at all.
"You're fired."
Lollie looked up at him and walked out.
"Hey, Lollie!"
Lollie turned back to see Riley and Maya trailing very slowly behind her.
"Can you come with us?" Riley asked.
"Why?" Lollie questioned.
Riley wanted to be friends with Lollie very very bad, but she knew that she and Maya didn't get along.
"You two come with me."
Riley grabbed both Lollie's and Mays's arms and dragged them both to her house.
﹏﹏﹏﹏
Lollie and Maya sat face to face waiting to see what Topanga and Bailey.
"You haven't been the nicest people to each other since Lollie came here. What's up with that?" Topanga asked.
"It all started when she came here." Maya spoke.
"I'm leaving." Lollie said walking to the door.
Bailey grabbed Lollie by her arms and whispered in her ear.
"You need to work things out with her."
"I don't want to."
"Winter, I don't care. Fix things and be the bigger person."
Lollie sat back down in her chair.
"You disliked me ever since you came through her bay window. Why?"
"Riley doesn't need any more friends."
"How are you gonna tell me what Riley wants." Lollie slouched down in her chair with her arms crossed and a smirk on her face.
"Because I'm her only best friend Winter, and I don't appreciate how you called me out in class the other day."
"What did you say to her?" Topanga asked.
"I only told her that she has her own insecurities, some more than others. I have them myself, it shouldn't have hurt her feelings."
"Why are you insecure about Lollie?" Topanga asked.
"Everything." Lollie said nonchalantly.
"Lee?" She questioned.
"She's always been like that she said she wasn't going to change how insecure she was either."
"You can't just snap your fingers and make problems go away. My dad left too Maya and you're ashamed of that."
"How did you know that?" Maya asked.
"I know a lot of things."
"You don't know me."
"And I don't plan on learning anything either."
Lollie stood up and grabbed her mother's hand.
"That's for the confrontation but it obviously wasn't needed."
"We have to meet Crazy Hat Lady." Riley said.
"Who?" Lollie asked.
"Come on." Riley said standing.
﹏﹏﹏﹏
The three went down to the subway and Lollie saw the lady sitting on the bench.
Riley dragged the two to the lady and sat down at the bench.
"What happened?" Crazy Hat asked the two.
"Class project." Maya told her.
"Fake business." Riley said.
"Got fired. Not so terrible. I've been fired myself once or twice." She said.
"Yeah, but not from fake businesses." Riley said.
"I think you could call 'em that. Now I come down here and watch people coming and going, giving their lives to fake businesses. Welp, gotta go! Big meeting! With squirrels." Crazy Hat said walking away from the girls.
The lady turned back around and looked at Lollie.
"Who are you?" She asked her.
"Lollie."
"New friend?"
"No."
The lady turned back around and went on her way.
"Yeah. Thanks." Maya said, "It's just us."
"It's just us on the bench." Riley said.
"No jobs, no future, no dollar, because I gave it to her. What am I gonna do about my mid-afternoon snack?" Maya asked.
Lollie stood up and walked to the trash can and put her hands inside the trash as the two girls look at her in disgust.
"I got pizza crust and a shoe." Lollie said walking back to the two with the stuff in her hands.
"What size?" Riley asked.
"Ten."
"What a terrible day." Riley said putting her head in her hands.
"Well, look who's still here. My dollies and the newest doll." Crazy Hat said coming back meeting, "Been looking at the people, huh?" She asked.
"Hey, hat, you're a sight for sore eyes. Also, she's not a doll." Maya told her.
"How'd your meeting go?" Riley asked.
"Oh, the usual. Yelled at everybody. Y'know, rahr rahr rah! Rahr rahr rah! Had 'em all running around scared of me." She explained laughing at herself.
"Sounds like fun." Riley said.
"It's more fun when I come down here from my big, tall building." She said.
"Oh, your building?" Maya asked in disbelief.
"It was named after me." She said.
"The crazy hat building?" Riley asked her.
"I sit here lookin' at all the people because it turns out, other people are the key to your own happiness. I watch 'em enough and I start thinkin' about what I can do for them." She said.
"What you can do for them?" Maya asked.
"Mm-hmm."
"Now you've been lookin' at all these people, now what do you see?" She asked looking at Lollie.
"I see a bunch of wet people who could probably use some real umbrellas." Lollie said.
"Yeah, not the no-good kind some Farkle sells on the street just to make some "cash, cabbage, cheddah-cheese." Maya said.
"Huh. You saw all that just by lookin' a little. What's a Farkle?" The lady asked.
"Did you know that people won't protect themselves from the storm, but they'll make sure their morning doughnut stays dry?" Riley questioned.
"Interesting observation. Now what are you gonna tell your class about it?" She asked.
"Nothing. Not going back. Tired of being humiliated." Maya said.
"Tough. You know what? We're gonna go back. Crazy hat goes into buildings and screams at people and you're not humiliated, right?" Riley asked her.
"Rahr! Rrow!" She said.
"Okay, rahr."
"That was terrible! It's been raining for six days." Crazy Hat said.
Riley and Maya stood up and looked down at Lollie.
"Aren't you coming?" Riley asked.
"I'll be over later." Lollie said not looking at the two.
Riley shrugged her shoulders and went on their way.
"You know who I am don't you?" The lady ask Lollie.
"Evelyn Rand." Lollie said looking up.
"Why didn't you say anything to the two of them?"
"They're on their own when they want to know things about others."
"You're different from the other dollies aren't you?"
"You can say."
"You don't talk much do you?" Evelyn asked her.
"I'm afraid I'll mess up when I speak."
"Oh, I see."
"Do you really?" Lollie asked taking her hands off of her face.
"Oh course. You seem like a brave girl Lollie, I give you props for that. But sometimes the biggest people have a huge but very sad or scary secret behind them. Yours is safe with me."
﹏﹏﹏﹏
Lollie, Maya, and Riley stood at the front of the class and the trio were ready to present there project.
"People are wet and cold out there." Riley said.
"They need something to keep them safe from the storm, and we know how to give it to them." Maya said.
"What if every single subway stop in New York City was stocked with donated umbrellas?" Lollie asked.
"The Matthews, Hart, and Parker umbrella foundation." The three said together.
"It's non-profit." Riley added.
"What?!" Farkle shouted.
"When you come into the subway station you leave an umbrella in the stand and when you leave the next station, there'll be one waiting for you." Lollie explained.
"The Matthews, Hart and Parker umbrella foundation." Riley said.
"We got you covered." Maya said.
"There's no money in umbrellas." Riley said.
"No, only people." Maya implied.
"My company makes a profit." Farkle said with a smirk on his face.
"Yeah, but at what cost? Look at your customers." Riley said.
Everyone was shaking. That's what sugar does to you.
"How could something that tastes so good make me feel so bad?" Darby asked and her head hit the desk.
"What goes up must come down, Farkle." Mr. Matthews told him.
"At least I was up. What do you have besides an idea?" Farkle asked.
"They've got an investor!" Mr. Matthews shouted.
"Oh no." Maya said and put her head back.
Evelyn Rand also know as Crazy Hat walked into the classroom.
"She followed us." Riley whispered grabbing onto Lollie. Maya glancing over rolling her eyes.
"Lollie, I believe you know who this is?" Mr. Matthews asked her.
"Evelyn Rand." Lollie muttered.
"You know Crazy Hat?" Maya asked.
"She's the chairman of the board of Rand industries." Lollie said.
"You guys walk by her building on the way to school." Mr. Matthews told the two.
"She really has a building?" Riley asked.
"With her name on it." Maya said.
"You'll usually find me on the top floor of my building going, "rahr rahr rah!" She smiled, "You three dollies want to know how I got my name on the building? By knowing a good idea when I hear one. So I've made out a check to "the three dollies." Evelyn said.
"You can do that?" Riley asked.
"I can do whatever I want." She said laughing, "Now what I want you to do is go get some umbrellas, go get 'em in some subway stations." She said.
"You start."
"The people will do the rest." Riley said.
"I believe in them. I've watched them. Now which one is the Farkle?" Evelyn asked.
Farkle raised his hand and slid down in his seat.
"Mm-hmm." She said walking towards his desk.
"Stop it!" Farkle shouted.
"Now this is one dollar, Farkle. Somebody came by it by doing hard work. Not by pumping people up with something you knew would let them down. Don't keep the dollar. It won't fix you if you keep it. Pass it on. That's what changes you, Farkle. Take it from me." She told him, "And, you three, don't worry so much about your future." She told them.
"Really?" Lollie asked.
"Really, yes." She said, "You three dollies, you're going to be just fine. Mm-hmm, now here, here's your first umbrella." She said taking her hat off and putting it on Lollie.
"Nice, nice work, dad." Riley said.
"You really think that you can make a difference in these kids' lives?" Evelyn asked Mr. Matthews.
"Yeah, I do. I'm their teacher." Mr. Matthews said.
"Good for you." Evelyn said.
"Lollie, if it's at all possible, I'd like to help out with your company." Lucas said coming up to me.
"Aww. You're as sweet as sugar." Evelyn told him.
"Too bad I'm not the boss. Riley is, she always will be." Lollie told and walked out.
﹏﹏﹏﹏
The Parkers sat around the tv watching some vintage movie Finn picked out.
Laughter erupted around the house when someone knocked on the door.
"I got it." Lollie said standing.
She opened the door the reveal Lucas.
"Hi."
"Can I come in?"
"Sure, um, just head up to my room."
He nodded and walked upstairs.
Lollie shut the door and saw the others looking at her.
"I'll be back." She said jogging upstairs.
"Why are you here?" Lollie asked.
"Just wanted to talk about what happened today."
"Okay. What happened?"
"Nothing much just you and Maya."
"What about Maya and I?"
"Is she bothering you?"
"Why would she?"
The two sat down on her bed.
"Just asking."
"Lucas, I don't know you that well. If someone was bothering me you'll be the second to last person I would go to."
He looked over at her and smiled his toothy smile.
"Who would be last?"
"Noah."
