Lollie Parker
Lollie faced Lucas as the two engaged in a random conversation before Mr. Matthews's lesson started.
"So... theirs a debate happening after class. Want to come and watch?" He asked.
"Debates are cool depending on the topic. So, if it's interesting I'll stay."
Lucas smiled, "That's great. I'll save you a seat."
"Ancient Greece-" Mr. Matthews started.
"What that? What that that?" Riley asked.
He pointed to the box, "What thi-this? This is a present."
"Is it for me?" She asked.
"What's your game, Matthews?" Maya asked.
"Game?" He questioned, "I mean no game. I just want to know who here wants this present."
Everybody but Maya and Lollie raised their hands.
"Oh, Maya, what? You assume by playing hard to get, I'm gonna give it to you?" He asked.
"Well, yes. That's one of the many arrows in my quiver."
"Medieval talk- What are you doing to me, woman?" Farkle asked.
"What about you, Lollie? Don't like surprises?"
"Oh, I love a good surprise. That's why I don't want the box."
"Riley." He said.
He placed the present on her desk.
"Yay!" She said opening the box.
She pulled the horse out the box.
"The Trojan horse"?" Riley questioned.
Mr. Matthews smiled, "Surprise!"
"This isn't a present. This is one of your life lessons wrapped up in a class lesson wrapped up in a box of nothing." She told him.
"How you doing, honey?" Maya asked Riley.
"I'm worked up." She answered.
"I know." Maya said.
"You assumed because it was all neat and pretty that something good was inside. Ancient Troy was protected by walls. The Greeks couldn't get in, so they built a big wooden horse and left it behind. What do you think the Trojans did?" He asked.
"They left it there because they were afraid that somebody was trying to teach them something." Riley said.
"They captured it as a trophy and brought it inside." Lollie said, "That night, the Greek soldiers crawled out of the horse and defeated Troy."
Maya looked back at Lollie, "You think you're smart don't you?"
"I know I'm smart. I had people who actually taught me." Lollie whispered, so no one but Maya heard, "What about you? Is this the first time someone's taught you something intelligent?"
"What have we learned here? Mr. Matthews asked.
Lucas raised his hand.
"Mr. Friar?"
"Don't make assumptions based on what you see?"
Mr. Matthews nodded, "Riley, listen, I'm sorry I made an example of you. So here's a gift for you."
"Ooh- No! I want to- No! Pretty ribbon- No!"
"I'll take my chances with that, sir."
"No, Lucas. You have to assume it was no good because the first one was no good. Aren't you all proud of me, dad?"
"No!" He said.
He handed the box to Lucas.
"Get out of detention free." He read.
"Ooh, I could use one of those. Gimme that and I won't call you "Ranger Rick" all week." Maya said.
"Here you go." He said.
He held his hand out so Lollie could give Maya the card.
"Do you really want me to hand Maya that card?"
He smiled and leaned forward so Maya could reach.
Lollie leaned back and whispered in his ear, "I didn't think so."
"Thanks, Ranger Roy." She said.
"Lemme guess. Ranger Roy is filling in for Ranger Rick?" Lucas asked.
"All week. And now, you." She said.
Mr. Matthews smiled, "Oh, is something gonna happen to me?"
"Yes, it is. A, d-d-d-d, a d-d-d-d, a d-d-d-detention. But not today. Boom!" She sang and she danced on top of his desk.
"Read the card." He said.
"Huh?" Maya said.
"Card."
"Say "get out of detention free" then give worthless card to Maya then watch her dance on my desk." She read, returning to her desk.
"Never assume. Look more deeply. Just because something is wrapped up all pretty, doesn't always mean it is." Mr. Matthews said.
Lollie sat back and bit her lip, "What? Lesson hitting close?" Lucas asked.
"No... maybe. Just relatable."
Maya looked back at Lucas, "You were in on this!"
"I'm Ranger Roy and I'll be here all week." He said tipping his imaginary hat.
She only shuddered and turned back around.
﹏﹏﹏﹏
Lucas sat in between Riley and Lollie for the debate.
Could you imagine how that turned out?
"...in conclusion, school uniforms reduce individuality which will be unnecessary in the real world when you're all working for me. Thank you. I am Farkle!"
"I don't think Farkle has a chance of winning with his statements." Lollie whispered to Lucas.
Lucas nodded, "I like debates. Exploring two sides of the same thing, good and bad, light and dark, right in front of you at the same time. Where else are you gonna get that?"
Riley smiled at him as Maya glared.
"Oh, right here. Look at you." He said.
"And now from Einstein Academy, "undefeated this season, seventy-two pounds of raw intellectual power! She is who your mama wishes she gave birth to!" The one, the only... Smackle!" Mr. Matthews read off the card.
She came in through the giant banner and faced Farkle, "You goin' down, chump."
She then turned and faced the audience, "Wearing a uniform makes you surrender to conformity and sacrifices uniqueness, which is our most valuable freedom. Don't let anybody tell you what to wear. Don't let anybody tell you what to be. Smackle, the one and only, out."
"Interesting. They make sense but hers seems so easygoing. You know what I'm saying?" Lollie asked.
"I do." Lucas said.
"Well, before I announce the winner, let me remind you all that our final debate of the season will be held right here next week, where our thought-provoking topic will be "Is beauty only skin deep?" Great, thank you. So the winner of today's debate is... Isadora Smackle, Einstein Academy."
Everyone clapped and left shortly after, leaving Riley, Maya, Farkle, Smackle, Lucas, and Lollie.
"It looks like our debate team could use some help." Lollie said.
"Yeah, Smackle's definitely got game."
"She's good. But is she great?" Lollie asked.
She saw Maya and Riley approaching them.
"I'm gonna go talk to her."
She walked up to Smackle and smiled, "Hi, I'm Winter."
She stuck her hand out for her to shake.
Smackle took it slowly, "Smackle. Einstein Academy."
"You're debate was great. I completely understood it and you spoke very softly towards it. I see why you won."
"Thank you."
"Um, I'm going to go check on Farkle, but once again, great debate."
Lollie walked off, "Isadora."
"Huh?"
"My name is Isadora."
"I heard but I think Smackle suits you better. I'm Lollie."
Smackle smiled and nodded.
Lollie checked on Farkle, who was lied on the floor.
"How you doing?"
"She's my arch-nemesis. I lose to her every year."
"You wouldn't lose if you'd take the time and relaxed and eased yourself as you spoke."
"I relax."
"I don't think "Farkle Nation" knows how to relax."
Farkle groaned.
Lollie sat down next to him, "Your team is full of guys. You need to research your next topic if you want to win."
"We don't need to study."
"For this one you do. Trust me. It takes a real genuine and genius person to know if beauty is skin deep."
﹏﹏﹏﹏
Lollie laid in her bed as she was almost asleep.
Until she heard tapping at her window.
She sat up and walked towards the window, pulling the blinds up.
Farkle and Lucas smiled at her.
She looked extremely tired. She opened the window and yawned, "What are you two doing here?"
Her voice was raspy.
The two of them entered her room and sat at her bay window as she flopped back on the bed.
"We want you to join our debate team." Farkle said.
Lollie picked her phone up and checked the time.
Eleven-twenty.
"You both came to my house at eleven-twenty at night to ask me to join your debate team. For why?"
"For why?" Farkle repeated.
She sat up in her bed.
The boys took a good look at her.
Her short blue hair was put into one of the tiniest buns, hair strands pulled every which way. A yellow tank top, one strap hanging lower than the other. She had her glasses on, which means she slept with them on, and finally, her blue shorts.
She was a mess.
"Yes, for why?"
"You seemed to really enjoy the debate today and you're smart so why not." Farkle said, "Farkle Nation could use someone like you."
"But why'd you come here at eleven, when you've could've asked me at school the next morning?"
"We thought you'd say yes even if you were tired."
Lollie took her glasses off and rubbed her eyes, "Please just text me next time. I'll join your stupid debate team."
"Great." Farkle smiled, "Practice is right after school in Mr. Matthews's class."
"Why'd come, Lucas?"
"I'm Farkle's emotional support for if you said no."
"Goodnight boys."
﹏﹏﹏﹏
Farkle had given Lollie her debate uniform that day during school.
She stood in the bathroom mirror fixing her two buns placed on the top of her head.
She pushed her glasses up and headed out the bathroom and towards Mr. Matthews's class.
Once she arrived she noticed she was the only girl.
"Great! You're here." Lucas said and held her shoulders.
"Had nowhere to be."
"Guys this is, Winter our new teammate."
One of the guys approached her and shook her hand.
"You can call me, Lollie."
"Nice to meet you."
The other boy smiled, "You seem very approachable."
"Thank you?"
"I like your hair."
"And I like... your personality."
He smiled at her and she sent one back.
Farkle smiled at his team, "This is great. This is good."
He turned and faced the door as Maya and Riley walked in.
"Ladies." Farkle welcomed.
"Farkle."
"Maya, why are you wearing glasses?" Lucas asked.
She pushed them up close to her face.
"They're Smackle's. I'm just holding them for her... on my face."
"We want to see if people will treat Maya differently now that she looks smart." Riley said.
One of the boys from the debate team approached her.
"Hello, suddenly approachable woman. What's your prescription? Mine's twenty/eight hundred. I can basically only hear you."
Lollie rolled her eyes.
Maya smiled, "I don't have a prescription. Although I must say, you guys are looking a lot less blurry."
"That's the nicest thing any girl's ever said to us."
"I liked you better blurry." She said.
She put the glasses on top of her head.
"That's the second nicest thing a girl's ever said to us."
"She said the first nicest thing."
The two of them pointed at Lollie.
"I think you look nice any way you are, Maya." Lucas said.
Lollie began to fiddle with her fingers.
The whole "feelings" thing was new to her.
"Thanks. You wanna go out with us Farkle?"
"Out like "out on a date"?" He asked and fell on the floor.
"Aw, no. Out like out there with Riley and I because there's someone else we want to introduce you to." She said bending down towards him.
"Yep. We think you'll really like her." Riley said.
"I have a very specific taste in girls. Is she one?" He asked them.
"Uh-huh." Maya replied.
"That'll do it!" He said.
He jerked up from the ground and walked out.
"Wanna join?" Lucas asked.
"Um... it's okay. I rather study the debate."
"Come on. Remember what you said? Relax."
"I am relaxed."
"Take a break for once."
﹏﹏﹏﹏
Lollie and Lucas trailed behind the others as they made their way towards Svorski's.
"Ever been here before?" He asked.
She shook her head, "No, but looks very nice."
"You and I should come here sometime."
"Well, we're here now."
"I meant just us."
"Just us?"
"You and me."
"You and I?"
"When should we come?" He asked.
"After the debate."
"It's a date."
It just rolled off his tongue.
He smiled down at her and walked ahead.
"A date. Okay." She muttered to herself.
She made it down the steps when she bottom of the steps and saw Smackle, all dolled up.
"Hey." Lollie smiled, "This is new."
Smackle turned and faced Lollie with a smile.
"Lollie, right?"
Lollie nodded, "You look nice."
"Even without the glasses?"
"You look the same, Smackle. You were pretty before the hair, the outfit, and the glasses. You're pretty now."
"Thank you, Lollie."
Lollie sent her a small smile and nodded. She went to head inside the tiny café before Smackle stopped her.
"You look pretty as well."
Lollie smiled a small smile and headed inside.
She let out a breath she didn't know she was holding and bumped into Lucas.
"Sorry."
"You okay?"
She nodded.
Farkle sat in a booth as he waited for his date.
"Presenting your date from the modeling runways of Paris, France-" Riley said.
"The new face of Geek Chic-Isadora Smackle." Maya finished.
Smackle came in modeling her clothes and new look.
"Wow. You made her over?" He asked.
"You know, just us girls playing with our hair and clothes." Maya said.
"Are you finally intrigued by me, Farkle?" She asked him.
"I'm intrigued that my friends don't realize that you are an evil genius."
"But a pretty evil genius, don't you think?" Riley asked him.
"This is debate preparation, isn't it?" He asked Smackle.
"What?" Maya asked.
"The next debate is "Is beauty only skin deep?" Smackle doesn't want to be like you guys. Smackle only wants to win. You ladies have been played." He told them.
"Is this true, Smackle?" Riley asked.
"Affirmative."
"Riley, do I please have your permission to mess her up now?" Maya asked.
"Negative."
Lollie and Lucas sat away from the others. He was explaining why Farkle wanted him as far away as possible.
"Is that gonna work?" Lollie asked.
"It like a mind game of sorts."
The two of them faced the group, "It looks like my time to shine."
He stood up and walked up to the group. Lollie following behind.
"Hi, guys. Wow, Smackle, you look great."
Smackle giggled, "Did that just come from me?"
"Smile at her." Farkle told him.
So he did.
"Omigosh. Omigosh, I just said "Omigosh." Like, awesome. Question?" She said.
"Are you okay, Smackle?" Lollie asked.
"I don't understand what's happening to me."
"Why don't you sit next to her, Lucas?" Farkle told him.
So he did.
"No one that's ever looked like you has ever sat this close. Are you sitting here because you want to be my mate?"
"I'm sitting here because the seat was empty."
"You smell like pine trees."
"Thank you."
"Our feet are touching."
"You're doing that."
"Hmm, Smackle, would you mind telling me, what is the square root of thirty-six?" Farkle asked.
"Who cares?"
"Excellent. Lucas is on our debate team. Will that be a distraction to you?"
"Should be, yeah."
"Good. Let's go. We've got a debate to prepare for." Farkle said leaving with Lucas.
Smackle looked up at Lollie, "Aren't you on their debate team?"
"I am... and now I know how my competitor is going to be."
Lollie walked out of the café and made her way home. She had a lot of research to do.
﹏﹏﹏﹏
Lollie sat at the table writing down everything little thing as she could.
Noah sat down in front of her.
"Whatcha doing?"
"There's a debate at school tomorrow and I'm in it."
"What's it about?"
"Is beauty really skin deep?"
"Can I come?"
Lollie lifted her head up.
Noah didn't really come to Lollie's events unless their dad or mom made him.
So it was pretty shocking that he wanted to come.
"If you want."
Noah smiled, "Good."
He looked down at her workspace, all she had was a couple sheets of paper and several different colored pens.
"This is your research?"
"Personal experiences."
Noah grabbed the papers off the table.
They all had different numbers in the corner.
"Your "personal experiences" are four-plus pages long."
"Yep, and you're in it."
"Really?"
"Yep, all of you. Mom, dad, Mariah, people at school, etcetera etcetera."
"But is it really necessary to have four- five pages?"
"It's notes."
"Lollie. I don't think five- six pages can be notes."
Lollie looked up at him, "Trust me. It's notes."
﹏﹏﹏﹏
Lollie walked into the debate alone.
Noah has gotten there before her and sat towards the back.
She looked over at his way and sent him a small smile.
She walked up to Farkle and Smackle.
"I didn't want to win this way, Smackle. I hope you enjoy being beautiful." He said.
"Oh, I do."
Farkle walked off and sat down at the table.
"Good luck." Lollie said.
"I don't think I need it."
"I like your confidence, Smackle."
"Thank you."
Lollie sat down beside Farkle and Lucas and sighed.
She brushed the strands of hair off her face. She had the same two buns on the side.
"What's wrong?" Lucas asked.
"I think winning is going to be harder than I thought."
Smackle stood at the front and began her debate.
"Omigosh, I'm so totally unprepared and scared." Smackle said.
"We finally got her." One of the boys said.
"Maybe that's what you would assume I would say, considering the effort I put into my appearance." She continued.
"Uh-oh."
"I'm here to argue today that beauty actually is skin deep. So I've done some research and I've learned... that it is. When you get compliments from people who don't ordinarily compliment you, when people look at you differently, packaging does matter. I wasn't pretty, then I was. This is a world where "pretty" seems better somehow. Which is too bad, but it's not debatable. However, I also learned that if you get swept up by what you are on the outside you can lose who you are on the inside. Even though it is easy to be fooled by the beauty of a trojan horse, it's real power comes from the army within- intelligence, compassion, integrity, courage. That army is the real you, no matter what you look like. So even though beauty may be skin deep, beauty is nowhere near as important as the army inside. And I'll try not to forget that. Well, look at all of you."
She finally put her glasses on.
"You're all very deeply beautiful. Especially you, Farkle. Thank you." She finished.
"She beat us." Lucas told Farkle.
"Yeah."
"Now, Winter Parker."
Lollie stood up and clasped her hands together. Her nervousness began to grow.
"To say that beauty is skin deep is a lot. You can find beauty in most things like flowers and cars but most people when they think of beauty, they think of people." Lollie started, "I personally see beauty in everything even if I don't want to."
"It's crazy to me when I see someone who is so mean-spirited and has the tendencies to be mean but I still see them as one the most beautiful people in the room. Same goes for kind-hearted people, but with those people, you automatically think they're beautiful even if you deny it. Since they are so kind and nice and sweet you think their personality is just so beautiful to you."
Noah took a look at Lollie's hands. She was fumbling with them more and more.
He stood up in his seat and headed towards the back so he could be seen more clearly.
He moved his hands up and down in front of him as she looked back at him. He was trying to help her breathe better.
Lollie smiled his way, "My brother is only a couple of months older than me and in my time knowing him he's helped me a lot. I think for doing so, he has beauty deep inside him."
"It's hard to call yourself beautiful or remotely pretty if you don't see it and most people don't. Hearing someone call you pretty, beautiful, or attractive is pretty hard for someone to believe because they never saw it in themselves. Beauty doesn't just have to be how you look. It can be personalities that beautiful or how you treat someone. From what I know, I know that everyone is beautiful in their own way. So is beauty skin deep? It depends on how you see it. It depends on you."
"We've got this." One of the boys from her team whispered.
The audience clapped as she made her way to her seat.
Lollie sat back down and sighed, "You were great." Lucas smiled.
"Thank you."
﹏﹏﹏﹏
At the end of the day... they chose both of the schools as the winners. That hadn't happened in a long time... especially for Farkle.
As for Lollie, she gained a hug from her stepbrother who had told her, "You were great."
She made her way to Svorski's. She had only been that one time Lucas and Farkle, along with Maya and Riley had taken her. More so Lucas and Farkle taking her.
She walked inside and sat at a table.
She looked at the menu and order something for the rest of her family.
She grabbed the bag off the counter and headed out.
She made it halfway up the steps before she heard her name.
"Lollie, hey."
"Hey, Lucas."
She didn't even have to look back she knew who he was.
"I was wondering if you wanted to hang out now."
Lollie looked back at him, "You seemed busy. We'll do it another time."
She looked through the window and saw Maya, Riley, Farkle, and Smackle all at a booth.
"Besides," She continued, "I got food for my family and I already, so. Enjoy the rest of your lunch, brunch, whatever."
She left Lucas and made her way home.
All he really wanted to do was talk to her about what she said during the debate.
Because whatever she said, however, she felt. He knew that absolutely no one she feels that way about themselves ever.
