Chapter 43: Past the Void
At that time, Renslayer was getting Miss Minutes to look up some files.
"Miss Minutes, I need you to remote access a series of restricted files from the archives," Renslayer requested.
"Ooh, doggy! On what?" Miss Minutes wondered.
"The beginning of time. The founding of the TVA," Renslayer answered.
"Right away," Miss Minutes nodded and started searching.
"Wait. What about the end of time?" Sylvie asked.
"Yeah," Jamie added, understanding what Sylvie was getting at.
"It's just a void," Renslayer said.
"What if the Void isn't the end? What if there's something beyond it? Hiding in the shadow of apocalypses obscured me from the TVA because I couldn't create a diverging branch there, right?" Sylvie explained.
"So if all of this is still being written, whatever happens is just a new timeline. It would be impossible to start a nexus event there. You could be completely undetectable," Jamie finished.
"That's it. That's the only place they could be," Renslayer agreed.
"So how do we get past the Void?" Sylvie asked.
Renslayer sighed and answered,"It's impossible. There's nothing for the TemPad to lock onto, no destination."
"Then we go through it," Jamie decided.
"That's suicide," Renslayer remarked.
"Then I guess our need for you has passed," Sylvie stated, approaching Renslayer dangerously.
"Wait. What about the Void spacecraft?" Miss Minutes suggested.
"Yes, the prototype," Renslayer added.
"Great," Sylvie agreed.
"I'll get the file," Miss Minute said then started digging.
"It's a spaceship designed to withstand the temporal void. It could take us to the end of time," Renslayer informed.
"Find Loki and Mobius," Jamie said.
"Find the man behind the curtain," Renslayer mentioned.
"And kill him," Sylvie remarked.
"Together," Renslayer finished, holding a hand out.
They shook hands, but Jamie whispered something to Sylvie, making her suspect something.
"There is no Void spacecraft," Jamie whispered.
"Miss Minutes, where are the files on this timecraft?" Sylvie asked.
"Still lookin', hon," Miss Minutes said anxiously.
"Nothing?" Sylvie replied.
"Hmm. Buried pretty deep," Miss Minutes answered, getting more nervous.
"It's highly restricted. I might not even have clearance," Renslayer pointed out.
"Oh, no, I think you would. If it's real," Jamie remarked.
"How long?" Sylvie asked.
"Any second now," Miss Minutes answered.
That's when the Minutemen came in. So Sylvie and Jamie got her TemPad and hopped up to the judge desk.
"You hurt?" one of the Minutemen asked.
"I'm fine, but she took my TemPad," Renslayer answered then called out, "Sylvie? Jamie? Not thinking of going on the run, are you? We know where you hide. Sooner or later, we'll catch you. It must be so exhausting."
"I'll admit you had us fooled there for a minute. Or did you get a little real?" Sylvie wondered.
"Yeah. Did Judge Renslayer really feel betrayed by her beloved TVA?" Jamie mocked.
"Why don't you come back out and we can talk about it?" Renslayer suggested.
"Sure. Just tell everyone else to piss off and we can settle this between us," Sylvie said.
"Works for me," Renslayer shrugged.
She signaled them forward.
"What happened to finding the man behind the curtain?" Sylvie asked.
"Yeah. The one really behind the TVA since the Time Keepers were a load of bull," Jamie added.
"Tell you what. You two come out with your hands up and I'll put you each in a time loop. Something not so bad. You two can live out your days in a good memory. Do you have any good memories?" Renslayer proposed.
"Just one, really," the two answered.
Sylvie made sure she put the Tempad in her back pocket. She activated the melt stick, they nodded to each other, made themselves known, then pruned themselves.
"They self-pruned," a Minuteman stated.
"Good. Then they're dead, too," Renslayer remarked before walking out of the courtroom.
