Chapter Twenty One - Breakfast Visitors

When I went down that morning for breakfast, I saw Pepper already cooking in the kitchen, delicious smells filling the whole level. I timidly walked down the stairs, trying to figure out what the smell was as I reached the kitchen bench. Pepper had her back to me, too focused on the cooking to realize that I was sitting on one of the bench stools. I watched her for a couple of moments as she stirred something inside a bowl, adding different things into it every now and then before stirring again.

"What are you making?" I asked softly and she spun around before smiling at me.

"You really are stealthy." She laughed, setting down the bowl to wash her hands, which were covered in flour. "It's waffles. Have you had them before?" I shook my head, craning my neck to look inside the bowl, which was full of a pale yellowish mixture.

"Do you want to help me make them?" She asked and I looked up at her sharply, shaking my head instantly.

"I don't know how to cook." I said quietly, sitting back down in the bench stool.

"That's okay." She smiled, pushing the bowl towards me. "All you need to is just stir that until all of those little flour lumps you see are gone." I hesitated for a moment before pulling the bowl closer and picking up the wooden spoon in the mixture, slowly stirring the mixture, which was thicker than I was expecting. Pepper began to move around the kitchen and I watched her curiously as I continued to stir, the flour lumps she was talking about slowly beginning to disappear.

"Thank you very much Emily." She said after a couple of minutes of me stirring, gently taking the bowl away from me. I continued to watch as she moved over to a different machine I hadn't seen and poured some of the mixture onto it. The mixture seeped down into the squares all over the machine thing and Pepper put the lid down on it, causing a sizzling sound to fill the room.

"Is that waffles I smell?" A very tired voice called out and both Pepper and I looked over at the couch to see Clint sleepily raising his head, his hair sticking out at all different angles and his eyes half shut. Pepper chuckled and nodded, Wanda popping her head up from the couch seconds later.

"Did someone say waffles?" She asked through a yawn, sweeping her hair out of her face.

"They'll be ready in about five minutes." Pepper smiled at them both. "So maybe go wake yourselves up before then and have a shower." They nodded and Clint slumped back onto the couch with a groan, but he over balanced and fell off the edge, the outraged yell of Nat filling the room immediately. Thor woke up suddenly with a loud grunt and fell off the edge of the couch, thankfully not on Nat too, who had jumped up and was pummeling Clint with a pillow.

"Tony reckons they're like a dysfunctional family." Pepper chuckled and I turned back to her, smiling softly.

"He's right about that." Came Steve's voice and I looked over my shoulder at the lift to see him walking out, the light blue shirt he was wearing soaked in sweat and clinging to his obviously muscular body. He gave me a smile and opened up the fridge, grabbing a bottle of strange looking blue liquid. He immediately gulped it down thirstily.

"I'm always right." Called out Tony's voice from the bedroom level above us and I looked up to see him leaning on the railing. He smiled and me and waved, to which I smiled back softly before he looked over at Steve. "Seriously Rogers? Training already?"

"I'm an early riser." Steve replied, throwing the now empty bottle into the bin. "What better way to spend the morning than running in the streets of New York as the sun rises anyway?"

"Maybe sleeping in." Tony rolled his eyes, walking down the stairs. "Like a normal person."

"Steve's anything but normal." Nat called out from the couch, pinning Clint down on the floor. Tony clicked his fingers and pointed at her in agreement, walking around to Pepper and grabbing a strawberry from the bowls of chopped up fruit for the waffles. Pepper gave him a soft glare but couldn't help but smile.

"How'd you sleep last night kiddo?" Asked Tony, back turned to me as he began to make a cup of coffee.

"Good thank you." I said softly.

"Tony, can I have a coffee too?" Asked Bruce from the couch, still laying down on it as Nat and Clint wrestled. Tony nodded and grabbed an extra cup from the cupboard.

"You want one kiddo?" Asked Tony, looking over his shoulder at me and before I could even open my mouth, Pepper turned to him, hands on her hips.

"We are not going to be giving her caffeine." She said firmly. "That's the last thing she needs now." Tony pulled a face and grinned at me.

"Another time." He said and Pepper sighed, rolling her eyes but smiling softly. Tony grabbed the two cups of coffee and walked over to Bruce on the couch, who was still laying down, but sat up when Tony came over, taking the coffee with what seemed like a relieved smile.

"Hey you two." Tony interrupted Clint and Nat. "Try acting like civilized human being for once." Nat threw a pillow hard at Tony, but he leaned back dodging it, grinning at her.

"I'm going to kill you one day Stark." Clint glared at him, standing up off the ground and trying to pat down his hair that was still sticking up everywhere. A sizzling from the kitchen distracted me and I looked back over at Pepper to see her opening up the lid of the machine that the waffle mix had been in and removing the waffles, which were now solid. The air was filled with the sweet smell and everyone immediately hopped off the couch, moving towards the table. Just as Clint was walking past the couch, there was a flash of bright green and I was just able to see Loki teleport in front of him, sticking his leg out and tripping him before he teleported away again. Clint let out a string of curses as he fell face first onto the ground, and Nat snickered as Loki appeared in his seat at the table.

"Loki you son of a –" Clint growled, standing up.

"I wouldn't do it." Tony warned as he sat down. "Stevie doesn't like naughty words."

"It was one time Stark." Steve rolled his eyes. "Seriously, just let it go." Clint flipped off Loki, who just grinned at him.

"Emily." Pepper caught my attention and I looked back over at her. "Do you mind taking the fruit over to the table?" I nodded and stood up, grabbing two of the bowls of fruit and walking over to the table, setting them down roughly in the middle.

"Here let me help." Said Wanda, standing up and waving her hands, the remaining bowls of fruit on the bench being lifted up by her red power and slowly moving through the air to the table. Pepper smiled thankfully and Wanda smiled back. I walked back over to the table and watched as Pepper filled up several plates with waffles.

"Is there anything else you would like me to help with?" I asked softly and she looked over at me, a soft smile lighting up her face.

"No its okay." She shook her head. "Thank you for asking though. You can go sit down, these won't be long." I nodded and walked over to the table, sitting down in the seat next to Loki and Pepper's empty one.

"Did you manage to get back to sleep?" Loki asked quietly, leaning in closer to me so I could still hear him over the conversations of everyone else. I shook my head and he gave me a small sympathetic smile. "Me either."

"Hey Emily." Steve's voice cut through out conversation and I looked up to see him sitting down at the table, dressing in a new t-shirt. "I was thinking that maybe we should start some proper combat training today." Since Loki had told me about training last night, I had been torn between whether I should train or not. I didn't think it was actually safe me to participate in... possibly triggering activities that could cause me to loose control, but I knew that if HYDRA decided to make a move, I would need to defend myself in other ways that didn't involve my unpredictable power.

"It's entirely up to you kiddo." Tony's voice cut through my thoughts. "You don't have to if you don't want to."

"No, I want to." I said softly, looking up at Tony before my eyes darted to Steve. "Please." He gave me a comforting smile and nodded before Pepper walked over with the plates of waffles, setting them along the centre of the table. Immediately everyone swarmed the waffles, filling their plates and covering the waffles in different toppings. I waited until everyone had sat back before I grabbed my own waffle. I grabbed a scoop of ice cream and put it on top of the still steaming waffle before finishing it off with an assortment of berries and a drizzle of maple syrup. I picked up my fork and began to cut off the corner, watching as the ice cream instantly began to melt. I speared a piece of the waffle and a strawberry on the end of my fork and chewed on it thoughtfully. Instantly, different flavours filled my mouth and my eyes widened slightly at all of the amazing tastes.

"How are they?" Asked Pepper and I looked up at her, swallowing quickly.

"Amazing." I smiled softly and she smiled back. I broke of another piece of my waffle with my fork, getting some of the ice cream and maple syrup this time, chewing with equal awe as the first time.

Suddenly, there was a loud bang above us and the whole of Stark Tower shuddered, causing everyone to fall silent and slowly look up. The chandelier light hanging from the roof of the second floor chimed as the glass sharps hit each other.

"What was that?" Asked Clint slowly.

"JARVIS?" Called out Tony. "What was that?"

"It appears that something has severely damaged the fifth floor sir." The AI replied.

"What did?" Tony demanded, standing up and tapping the blue light on his chest, the gold and red suit immediately materializing over his body. There was another bang, closer this time, and I clutched my chair tightly, my heart pounding. The chandelier shook again and Steve, stood up, walking over to the large glass window that was one wall.

"Stark, you may want to see this."
