Chapter Seven - The Avengers

After Tony and Bruce had gone through all of the projections, Tony asked the AI, JARVIS, to grab the woman, who I learnt was called Pepper. Less than a minute later, she appeared at the Lab door, smiling softly at me and I gave her a small timid smile back.

"How'd it go?" She asked Tony, walking towards us.

"Nothing we should need to fix up." Tony replied. "A few decent meals and a bit of TLC should see her back in good shape." He grinned at me and I gave him a small smile back before looking back down at my bracelets.

"Well, I can solve that first one." Pepper smiled. "Lunch is downstairs, Greek salads with wraps and lamb meatballs." My ears immediately perked up at the sound of food, but I kept my head down, not wanting to seem hungry and expose another weakness. These new people may be nice, but people can hide their true self behind smiles.

"I swear to God if Thor has eaten it all already." Tony muttered under his breath, packed away everything quickly, speed-walking out of the Lab. Pepper chuckled and shook her head, watching as Bruce packed the last of the equipment before talking after Tony, throwing a small smile over his shoulder at me. After they left, Pepper turned to me and I looked over at her, giving her a small smile when she smiled at me.

"I told you it wouldn't be that bad." She said, holding out her hand. "Come on, you need to get some food into you. Trust me, anything Greek is amazing, you'll love it." I hesitated for the smallest second before taking her hand and sliding off the bed, letting her lead me towards the door. She let go of my hand and let me walk in front of her to the lift. Alarm bells immediately went off from someone being behind me, but I tried to quieten them down.

We stepped into the lift and Pepper pressed a button with a 1 engraved on it. The trip down was short and as soon as the doors, I was immediately hit with the sound of a whole lot of chattering. My heart instantly began to pound rapidly and my eyes widened. I couldn't even see the people yet, but my the sound of all of their voices, there were a lot of them. I was fine with knowing three new people, but a whole room of them was too much for my anxiety. I scrambled backwards, pressing my back in the very corner of the lift. Pepper held the lift doors open and smiled softly.

"It's okay." She comforted. "They won't hurt you. They're just... loud." She reached out with her hand and grabbed mine, gently pulling me out. I tried to resist, wanting to stay in the corner of the lift, but she held my hand tightly.

"I promise it'll be fine." She urged me softly. "I'll look after you, okay?" I resisted a little less, but still walked as slowly as I could. We took a slight turn to the right and I immediately saw a whole table of people, at least ten of them. My eyes widened and I stepped behind Pepper trying to hide. Several of them spotted me as I walked into the room, including Loki, Tony and Bruce and their conversations slowly died off, causing everyone to immediately look at where they were looking. I shrunk under their gazes, trying to hide behind Pepper, but she stepped around and gently nudged me forward.

"Is this the new recruit?" Asked a tall, solidly built man with blonde hair. His blue eyes watched me carefully and my eyes quickly dropped to the ground.

"Not exactly a recruit." Tony corrected, reaching across the table to grab a bowl of food. "But something like that. Be nice to her." Pepper gently pulled me towards the table, everyone still looking at me, and found an empty seat between her and Loki. My eyes darted to Loki and he gave me a small smile, immediately causing me to look away as I sat down. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Pepper reach across the table and I looked up to see her bringing a massive bowl of salad towards me. My eyes immediately widened, I had never seen so much food in my life before. She began scooping it onto my plate before pulling over a plate of wraps, setting one of the side of my plate before she began to put meat on my plate too, filling it until there was almost no space left.

"Is that enough?" She asked, looking down at me and I nodded quickly, not wanting to seem greedy by her putting more on my plate. She smiled and turned her attention back to her own food while I stared at my own food, not quite believing this was all for me. I hesitantly picked up my fork and poked at one of the pieces of meat like it was going to jump out at me. I gently speared it on the end of my fork and hesitantly sniffed it, worried that it might be poisoned. When I didn't detect anything however, I slowly put it in my mouth, chewing thoughtfully, an explosion of flavours filling my mouth.

"You know it's rude to stare." Tony interrupted the silence that I didn't even realize had settled over the table. I looked up sharply from my food and saw that everyone, except Tony, Pepper, Loki and Thor were staring at me. Very slowly, the rest of the Avengers tore their gazes away from me, going back to what their conversations from before, but I could sense the atmosphere in the room wasn't the same as before. I looked back down at my food, hunching my shoulders as if I was trying to hide myself. I ate my food slowly, despite how starving I was.

That was one thing that HYDRA had always taught me. Never show your weakness to people you don't know. I didn't know these people, and I couldn't have them taking advantage of my hunger, especially when my powers had been restrained. I trusted Tony and Pepper, and possibly Thor and Loki, but I didn't know the rest of them.

"Why don't we all introduce ourselves?" Tony's voice cut through my thoughts and I jumped slightly, causing Pepper to rub my knee in what I think was meant to be a comforting gesture. Slowly, the conversation between everyone began to die off and Tony nodded towards Loki first, who paused with a forkful of salad halfway to his mouth.

"She already knows me though." Loki glared at Tony. I looked over at Loki, confused by his personality. When he was with me, he seemed relaxed and kind, but when he was with these other people, the Avengers, he was moody and grumpy. I wasn't sure if he was just trying to trick me and get me to fall into some sort of trap for him, or if he just hated these Avenger people. However, before I could focus on it much more, I was pulled out of my thoughts by Loki speaking again. And I looked up at him to see him glaring at Tony.

"Fine." Loki grumbled, looking away from Tony and down at me. His eyes seemed to soften slightly, but his posture didn't. "I'm Loki, as you already know. I'm Thor's younger adopted brother, and the God of Mischief." His eyes seemed to smile at me, but his face was still closed and reserved. He picked up his fork again and continued to eat before Tony could make him say anything else. Thor, who was sitting as the head of the table and next to Loki, sat up a little straighter and wiped his mouth with a napkin before speaking.

"I am Thor Odinson." He grinned at me, a contrasting difference from when he and Loki had broken into my HYDRA cell. "Loki's older brother. God of Thunder." I gave him a tiny smile, unable to resist his bright personality before my eyes darted over to the man sitting next to him. He had short brown hair that stuck up slightly at the front and was dressed in a faded navy. He looked up from his food and wince slightly as he swallowed his food.

"Clint Barton." He said, spearing another piece of meat onto his fork. "Also known as Hawkeye." He shoved the food into his mouth and Tony rolled his eyes from the front of the table. Clint noticed and looked over at him.

"What Stark?" He asked, swallowing his food. "I am starving and this food is delicious."

"You're always hungry." Loki rolled his eyes from next to me.

"And you're always grumpy." Clint shot back, glaring at Loki with hatred.

"Guys seriously?" Interrupted a woman with slightly wavy red hair who was sitting next to Clint. "Can you both just go one day without arguing? Please?" Both the men didn't meet her gaze and went back to eating their food in silence as the woman spoke again, this time to me. "I am Wanda by the way. Sorry about the boys." She looked over at Clint and rolled her eyes at him but was smiling slightly. The man next to her, the blonde hair blue eyed one, spoke up next.

"I'm Steve." He flashed me a quick smile as he put down his fork. "Steve Rogers. Also known as Captain America. It's nice to finally meet you, in person I mean." I gave him a small smile and he smiled back. He seemed nice enough.

"I'm Natasha." The woman next to Steve said. She has red hair like Wanda's, but hers had blonde colouring down the bottom and hung loosely over her shoulders. "Everyone just calls me Nat though." She gave me a small smile and I kind of returned it before I looked back down again. They all had kind gazes, but eye contact with people for too long was unnerving. Bruce was next but he just gave me a small smile and looked over at Tony again.

"Why don't you tell us about yourself kiddo?" He said, giving me a small smile. "We don't know your name yet."

"There isn't really much to say." I mumbled, looking down at my wrists and spinning around the bracelets. "My name..." I hesitated, before taking a deep breath. "It was Emily, but HYDRA called me B12."

"I like Emily better." Pepper said softly and I looked up at her in surprise to see her giving me a small smile. I smiled softly back and as I looked back down at my food, I felt everyone looking at me, causing me to shrink inwards slightly.

"Is there anything else?" Tony urged and I shook my head, biting my lip nervously as I looked down at my lap again. Nobody said anything for a couple of moment, there was only the sound of cutlery clinking against plates , but very slowly, their conversations began to start up again. I had lost my appetite, tears pricking at my eyes as I realized how little I knew about myself. HYDRA had shut me out from everything, including myself.

I gulped, feeling a lump build up in my throat. Pepper seemed to noticed and placed a comforting hand on my knee, causing me to flinch immediately. I turned my head away from her, not wanting her too see my teary eyes.

"Loki?" She said in a soft voice, looking at Loki sitting next to me. "Can you take Emily up to her room?" I didn't wait for his answer, feeling like I was going to start crying at any second. I stood up and immediately everyone looked at me, but I kept my head down and walked around the corner to the lift. I quickly pressed the button, wrapping my arms around my waist as if trying to hold myself together.

"Emily, wait." Called out a voice, and I recognised it as Loki's. My arms tightened around my body.

"You don't have to follow me." I said quietly, looking down at the ground as I waiting for the lift to open. It pinged and I stepped inside just as Loki walked towards me. I looked up at him briefly, my eyes still shimmering with tears. His eyes softened and I looked away again.

"Are you okay?" He asked me softly. I pressed a random button on the lift and causing the lift doors begin to shut.

"I will be." I said quietly, looking up at him again before the doors slid shut.
