Chapter Four - First Steps
LOKI POV
Suddenly, for no reason, I bolted upright, my chest heaving and eyes wide. I looked around me frantically and saw that I was in my room back at stupid Stark Tower. I looked down at my body and saw that I had sheets drawn up to my chest. My brain suddenly remembered the mission to HYDRA and I ripped the sheets off my sweaty body, grateful to see that I was still in the same clothes as before. I would have murdered Thor for changing me into 'something more comfortable', he already went far enough as tucking me into bed.
I gritted my teeth at the thought and cursed myself for acting so weakly in front of him, the Avenger mortals probably saw me collapse when I teleported them back to this stupid tower. God, could it have gotten any more embarrassing? Thor had probably already told them how I had been so 'caring and kind' to that woman in the cell.
The woman.
I quickly ducked into my ensuite and splashed my very tired-looking face with water, drying it with a towel. I waved my hand over my body and changed my clothes into a pair of black jeans and a navy blue t-shirt with my magic. I smile, happy to have my magic back, a little sleep was all I needed. I looked at myself in the mirror. I would have preferred to wear a jumper, but the heat of summer was already in full swing, and it was worse for me because of my cursed Frost Giant heritage.
I ducked back out of the ensuite and waved my hand over my bed, my magic making it perfectly. I tussled my hair slightly, trying to look at least a little presentable before I pulled open my bedroom door, only to almost crash into the arrogant weasel of a man, Tony Stark.
"No need to fall head over heels for me too Reindeer Games." He grinned and I immediately glared at him, clenching my jaw. So Thor had told them about me and the woman.
"How long have you been standing there?" I demanded, looking down at him. He was tiny, really. His head only just reached my eyes level. It made him look even more pathetic.
"About 5 seconds before you crashed into me." He replied, shrugging his shoulders. "Your girlfriend is awake, I thought you'd like to know. She's in the basement." He spun around, hands in his pockets.
"She's not my girlfriend." I growled through gritted teeth, but he had already walked out of earshot. I muttered under my breath at him and began to walk towards the lift. I jabbed the button to go down and a couple of seconds later, the lift doors opened and I was grateful to find that it was empty. I stepped in and pressed the button to go to B, or basement, which really was just Stark's collection of prison cells that were literally always empty. I clenched my jaw at the thought of them locking her up like she was some dangerous villain. I hoped they at least had the decency to give her some medicine to soothe her pain and make her comfortable.
The lift pinged the doors opened, revealing a solidly white corridor with a brick wall on the right and all of the cells on the left. I strode out of the lift and looked through all of the cells, trying to find one with the woman in it. Stark was honestly stupid to not put her in the first one. Like, all of the others were empty, why did he have to put her in a random one?
I eventually found her and tried to open the door, but it was locked. I sighed heavily and looked up at the low ceiling where Stark had his know-it-all AI.
"Hey JARVIS." I called out, shaking my head at the stupid name. "Can you open up this door?"
"Of course Mr Laufeyson." The voice replied and I fisted my hands. "Let me just alert Ms B12 of your presence."
"That's not my... you know what?" I growled. "There is no point arguing with an AI." I slowly processed the rest of his words. "Her name is B12?"
"It is the only name I could find on any records." The AI replied. "And it is the only name she keeps telling us." There was a pause before he spoke up again. "Ms B12 is willing to see you." The lock clicked open and the door slowly opened.
B12 POV
Barely a few minutes after I had started to relax, the Artificial Intelligence voice spoke from the ceiling again and I jumped, not at all expecting it. Almost immediately, I looked down at my hands, expecting to see the monster inside me bursting out, taking my moment of shock as a chance to escape like it normally did. But there was no sign of fire, not even a small spark and I felt my lips twitch, a ghost of a smile barely visible on my face. That Tony Stark man was smart, I'll give him that.
"Mr. Laufeyson is here to see you." The voice repeated and at first, I was confused by the name until I connected all of the dots and realized that it was probably Loki's last name. we
"He can come in." I said softly once I realized that the AI was probably waiting for me to say something. It felt weird to have someone ask me if I was okay with something. I was so used to people constantly barging in on me that it almost felt wrong to be asked permission.
The door clicked and slowly swung open while I watched it warily. A hand pushed it open and my eyes darted to the face, immediately recognizing it as Loki. He looked at me curiously, and partly cautiously while giving me a small smile. He turned around and shut the door, the lock clicking into place loudly. I instinctively stiffened at the thought of being locked in a room with a complete stranger. I fisted my hands, an instinctual reaction to holding back the monster inside me before I realized that I had the bracelets. I uncurled my fists slightly, though not fully because I didn't trust the bracelets that well.
"How are you feeling?" Asked Loki and I looked up sharply from my hands to see him still standing by the shut door. Either he was scared of me, or he had the respect to give me some space. I hope it was the second one.
My eyes quickly ran over his body, immediately checking for any signs of weapons in his black pants and navy blue shirt. It was very different to the strange green, gold and silver armour he had on before. I looked up at his face again and saw him smiling softly, with a raised eyebrow as if he was implying something, his green eyes sparkling with humour
"Done looking?" He chuckled and I looked away, realizing how I must have looked. I bit my lip nervously, waiting for him to yell or strike out at me, but he didn't even move.
"You mind if I sit?" He asked after a couple of seconds of silence. I blinked before shaking my head slowly, watching him carefully as he sat down in the chair and leaned back, watching me curiously. I tried to meet his gaze, but every time I did, the brightness in his green eyes caught me off guard and I had to look away again.
"What is your name?" He asked after a couple of minutes. I looked up again for a second before turning my gaze back down to my bracelets, trying to keep my face blank.
"B12." I replied quietly. He shifted in his seat and I looked up at him sharply, worried that I had somehow answered the question wrong. He gave me a small comforting smile and sat up a little.
"That's not your real name though, is it?" He pressed and I looked away, back down at my hands. My brain was having an internal battle, I was torn between telling him the truth or keeping my guard up in case this was all a trap. I remembered him trying to help me at HYDRA and I took a deep breath before shaking my head. My posture immediately stiffened and I squeezed my eyes shut, waiting for him to yell at me. He stayed silent, not speaking, not even moving. After a couple of seconds, I slowly looked up at him, surprised, but still partly fearful. I met his gaze timidly and he smile sadly.
"I'm not going to hurt you." He said softly, his eyes shining with sadness and sympathy. I was surprised by the pure emotion and I relaxed a little, but not fully.
"Did Stark tell you where you are?" He asked and I nodded softly, looking back down at my bracelets and spinning them around my small wrists. I felt him watching me, but I didn't look up, twisting the bracelets one way, and then another, and then back again.
"Can I try something?" He asked after at least three minutes of silence. I looked up at him sharply, not as scared as before, but still cautious. He saw my expression and he held up his hands in a cautious way, probably to show that he wasn't going to hurt me. He slowly leaned forward, watching me carefully while I watched him, and he held out his right hand, palm facing the ceiling. I looked down at it and then back at him, confused. He took a deep breath in and I tensed, ready to leap away at any sign of danger. Suddenly, a small green light appeared in his palm and my eyes widen as I let out a gasp without thinking. I scrambled backwards away from it, eyes darting between the green light and his face and then back again. He smiled comfortingly and held his hand out further to me.
"You can touch it." He urged gently and I looked back down at the light. I watched it for a couple of seconds, hoping that it wasn't going to hurt before I slowly moved away from the bedhead. I reached out with a shaky hand and my fingertip very slightly touched the light. Instantly, a tingling feeling travelled up my fingertip and I let out another gasp, my eyes widening. It travelled all through my body, filling me with the strange tingling feeling which was quickly followed by a light feeling. Calm, I think. There was a slight flash of green in my eyes before it disappeared. I felt my heart rate begin to slow and my lungs loosened, allowing me to breathe easier. I felt my posture relax and I looked over at Loki.
"What was that?" I asked, partly in awe but trying to hide my emotion too. He chuckled slightly and leaned back in his chair.
"That was my magic." He smiled and my eyes widened. I had never met anyone before with magic, all of the HYDRA agents were... normal. Loki smiled again and continued. "It was a simple calming trick."
"Thank you." I said quietly, looking away again as my lips twitching only very slightly, not even noticeable.
"Will you tell me your real name now?" He asked softly. "Now that you can see I'm not going to hurt you?" I exhaled slightly and bit my lip nervously, fiddling with the bracelets on my wrists. I closed my eyes briefly before looking up at him, hoping that I was doing the right thing.
"Emily." I said softly. "My real name is Emily."
"Emily." He repeated and a shiver went down my spine from hearing someone say my real name for the first time in... too long. I shifted uncomfortably and looked back down, fiddling with my bracelets again.
"That's a nice name, I like it." He said after a couple of seconds of silence. "It suits you." I looked up at him in surprise and met his green gaze before smiling slightly, again barely noticeable, but he saw it and grinned. Suddenly, the voice from the AI filled the room and I jumped again in fear, scrambling away, eyes wide as I felt my chest tighten and my heart rate pick up again. Loki looked up at the ceiling before back at me, sighing heavily and sitting up.
"Miss Potts is requesting entry." The AI said and Loki slowly stood up, smoothing out the wrinkles in his shirt.
"I should go." He said, his voice suddenly becoming tight and reserved. I was filled with confusion at the sudden mood shift. I didn't say anything, watching him go with a strange sadness filling my chest. I furrowed my eyebrows as I looked down, this man was definitely different, he was making me feel... different.
He opened up the door, looking over his shoulder once more before stepping out of the room and disappearing around the corner, a new person stepping inside.
