Chapter Fifty One - Rescue
I began to stir and blinked a couple of times to try and clear my vision. I lifted my head and was immediately attacked by a pounding headache. I groaned and let my head flop back to the floor, which sent a new wave of pain through out my head. I could faintly hear an alarm going off in the distance and from where I was on the floor, I could see a faint red light flashing underneath the bottom of the door. I looked over to my left and through the little light in the room I could see a worn chest of drawers and a yellowed wall. I looked over to my right and saw a big book shelf, occupied by only a couple of dusty books. My brows furrowed in confusion and I struggled to sit up, my surroundings completely unfamiliar. I tried to ignore the throbbing in the back of my head as much as I could and I slowly sat up, realising that I was on a bed that wasn't like my normal bed in the compound. I looked down and saw that I was dressed in completely black clothing with a belt around my waist that was holding two guns and a couple of daggers. I blinked, slightly alarmed and stood up, everything swaying around me.
I stumbled into another room off to the left and saw that it was a small bathroom, nothing like the bright, clean bathrooms in the compound. I looked at the mirror and my eyes widened in horror as I caught a glimpse of a big purple bruise on the back of my neck. I turned slightly to the side to get a better look at it, only for my eyes to fall on a badge on my shoulder. My blood immediately ran cold as I recognised the HYDRA symbol and I tried to calm the panic that was rising up in me. I could be back at HYDRA, I should be.
I tried to rack my brain to remember what had happened, but everything was fuzzy and the pounding from the bruise on the back of my neck was very distracting. I walked back out of the bathroom and opened up the door that led into the hall with the flashing red lights. I flinched slightly at the blaring alarm and looked up and down the hallway, not a single person in sight. I stumbled out of the room, heading right as my head pounded from the flashing lights.
I heard yelling up ahead and I began to panic, though there was no time to run away when someone came around the corner. They were dressed in complete black and had the HYDRA badge on their shoulder too. They pushed past me, causing me to stumble into the wall. They were dragging their left leg behind them, leaving a big trail of blood along the white floor. I stared in horror and stayed pressed up against the wall as they collapsed to the floor a little further on, not moving. I quickly darted away from them and the sound of gun fire reached my ears as I continued to run. The yelling slowly became clearer and I recognised it as Russian.
Just as I rounded a corner, someone flew through the air straight past me and I fell flat onto my back, looking back at where they had come from to see a massive green... what seemed like a human, but was about 8 feet tall. HYDRA agents were swarming him, but he kept flinging them against the wall, and they slid to the ground, unmoving.
I looked away from the massive green man and saw another person up in the air, dressed in a a gold and red suit with beams of blue lights barreling out of the palms of the suit and hitting all of the HYDRA agents. There was also red and green flashes coming from somewhere in the fight, pinning agents up against the roof and walls of the hallway.
I scrambled back up to my feet and sprinted down the white hallway, avoiding agents being flung nearby. The sounds of gunshots and yelling slowly faded away, the more I ran, though I had no clue where I was running. Sometimes, I would round a corner and could hear the fight get louder, and I turned down the hallway to get further away.
At one point, a ran into a group of agents rushing towards the hallway towards the fight. I tried to dart down another hallway, but they had already spotted me.
"That's the experiment!" One of them yelled out. "It's escaping."
They rushed towards me, their heavy boots thumping against the floor as I heard guns being loaded. I quickly looked over my shoulder to see one of them holding a gun in my direction. I skidded around a corner, my boots slipping on the shining tiles just as they began to shoot at me.
The sound of the fight drew closer to me, but it was either that or risk being taken by the HYDRA agents to goodness knows where. Bullets continued to pelt along the walls on either side of me and stumbled on the slippery floor a couple of time, scrambling to get back upright.
As I rounded another corner, I saw the fight against the HYDRA agents, except this time, I could see a man with a blue, white and red shield and a woman dressed in a black suit with flame-coloured hair. There was a bolt of lightening that flew up from the middle of the fight I watched as the man with the shield grabbed the woman and shielded them both. Several HYDRA agents were knocked back by the lightening and I darted out of the way as they came flying at me.
The group of HYDRA agents that had been chased by me we knocked flat to the floor by the electrocuted agents and brought me enough time time to run away again.
However, before I could barely take a step forward, there was a bang from behind me and horrible pain shot straight through the back of my left calf. I stumbled forward and barely managed to avoid falling directly onto my nose. I swallowed back a cry of pain and rapidly blinked back the tears of pain that filled my eyes. I tried to stand back up as the agents untangled themselves from each other, but my leg gave out from underneath me. I dragged myself along the ground, knowing I wouldn't be able to get away from them. They walked closer to me and I desperately looked for weapons in the HYDRA outfit I was wearing, but somehow, there was nothing there.
Suddenly, someone grabbed my arm and I looked up sharply to see the woman with the flame-coloured hair dragging me up to my feet, putting my arm around her shoulder. She raised her gun, which I recognised as a Glock, and shot the agents straight through their chests as she began to help me walk backwards, towards the fight, but away from the majority of the HYDRA agents.
"Stark, I've got her." She spoke and I looked up slightly to see a black ear piece in her ear. I didn't know who Stark was or where this woman was taking me, and I wasn't even sure if I should trust her, despite the fact that she and others, including the green man, the man with the shield and whoever had the lightening, were fighting the HYDRA agents.
My eyes darted back to the HYDRA agents that had been chasing me and saw that most of them were lying on the floor motionless from the woman's bullets, and those who hadn't been shot had disappeared. Weighing up my chances, I decided to make a break for it.
I elbowed the woman in the gut and she immediately buckled, her grip loosening on her gun enough for me to grab it out of her hand and spin around on one foot, aiming it at her. She had been making a move towards me, but as soon as she saw the gun, she paused. I hobbled backwards, struggling to walk with the bullet in my calf. She murmured something under her breath, most likely through the earpiece, and someone broke out of the fight still going on behind her. It was the man with the shield, a thin cut dribbling blood down his cheek. He unclipped the helmet on his head, letting messy blonde hair break free.
"Emily." He spoke warily, throwing the shield over his shoulder as he passed the woman, his steps cautious. I continued to hobble backwards, blood drippling down my leg. "Emily, its okay, we aren't going to hurt you."
My eyes darted between the woman and him, the gun aimed at the man as he continued to walk towards me. He grabbed the shield off his back again and threw it against the wall, causing it to bounce off and knock the gun out of my hand. I was impressed by the accuracy, but before I could even make a move to grab it again, the woman darted forward and took it. She held it steadily up to my face and I stumbled backwards, feeling heat bubbling in my stomach.
"Emily, please." The woman spoke. "We don't want to hurt you."
Both her and the man took a step towards me and I shuffled backwards, feeling the blood soaking the back of my pant leg. I quickly looked over my shoulder and saw that the path behind me was still clear of HYDRA agents. I moved back faster, making sure to keep my eyes on the woman and the man. The man pressed his finger to his ear and murmured something under his breath as the woman kept walking towards me, her steps steady and confident.
Suddenly, there was the sound of footsteps behind me and before I could even spin around to see who had suddenly appeared, I was pulled into a headlock by the attacker. It wasn't a firm headlock, but I still struggled in it. Something cool touched my head and my whole body suddenly stiffened and I couldn't move at all. My eyes winded in alarm and I tried to move my eyes to see who was holding me, but I only caught a glimpse of black hair.
"Emily, its just me." A voice whispered in my ear as I struggled against the paralysis, but I couldn't even more my finger tips. "Please don't fight it, we just want to take you back home."
I had no clue who this new man was or where this home was that he was talking about. I focused on the burning in my stomach, instinct telling me to pull it up. I focused on the feeling of it as it travelled through my body and suddenly fire burst out from under my skin. However, the man holding me didn't even flinch and I looked down as best as I could to see that he was wearing some sort of flameproof gear. I focused on the fire again and tried to make it hotter, but it didn't work. I tried thrash around in his grip, not wanting to be taken somewhere to be tortured for information or whatever they wanted to do to me, but the paralysis was strong.
"Loki, we have to leave." The woman with the red hair spoke up again. "Now. Tony says there is another group of HYDRA agents coming straight towards us."
I struggled to get free of the man's grip, not wanting HYDRA to find me and lock me up again, but I didn't want to go with these stranger's either. I could feel the blood dripping out of the bullet wound in my leg and I knew it wouldn't be long until I felt the affects of blood loss. I desperately tried to break free from the paralysis, but the cool thing pressing against my temple, which I realised was the man's finger.
Suddenly, as I was watching the red-head, I saw her eyes widen and the man with the shield behind her immediately stiffened. Before either of them could open their mouths, I heard thd familiar sound of a blade flying through the air and the man behind me, who was apparently called Loki, suddenly collapsed, his grip on me loosening. I tumbled to the ground and pain shot straight up my arm as I landed hard on my shoulder, wincing slightly in pain. I tried to roll onto my back, the paralysis slowly wearing off now that the man's fingers weren't touching me anymore.
I looked back up at Loki and saw him collapsed on the ground with a blade in his hand, blood pooling from his shoulder. Footsteps moved towards me and I looked up to see a man with a silver arm and a mask over his face stalking towards me. Something about the new man was familiar and I didn't even struggle as he grabbed my arm and pulled me to my feet. The red-head woman began to shoot at the new man, but he simply let them bounce off the bulletproof armour he was wearing, dragging me away.
I looked back over at the man who had been stabbed and saw the man with the shield helping him up. Blood was soaking his flame-proof clothes and he looked weak, so weak that his legs were shaking as he stood up. The man with the metal arm must have hit a major veins, judging by the amount of blood he was loosing and the weakness of his arm.
As I was watching the injured man, I saw him disappear in a flash of green and appear next to us in another flash of green. The man with the silver arm lurched to the side as Loki swung a weak punch, causing me to quickly rearrange my footing, gratefully the paralysis had worn off. The silver armed man took the blade out of the injured man's hand and stuck it roughly back into his stomach, causing Loki to double over and collapse to the ground, unmoving as he gasped painfully.
The silver armed man dragged me around the corner and the unfamiliar people disappeared from view. I stumbled through the still lasting paralysis and the silver armed man slightly loosened his grip on me, ripping off his mask and speaking the too familiar words.
"подними мое пламя."
