Chapter Fifty Eight - Second Attempt

When I got back to the dining hall, I saw that it was almost completely empty, except for the Soldier, who was sitting there with two plates of food, one being empty. I slowly sat down and he pushed the full plate towards me, staying silent, which I was grateful for.

I was halfway through eating when he finally did speak up.

"Strucker spoke to me before you got to training." He said and I stiffened, slowly looking up at him. "He wants us to complete the mission from last night. He believes that they won't expect us again. However, he wants us to change targets to someone who's death with shake them enough for them to be unprepared for us."

He reached imto his utility belt and pulled out the familiar information disk, pressing a button and causing a hologram to appear of a man with the name Nicholas Fury written underneath.

"He's said to be the founder of the Avengers." The Soldier looked up at me. "His death will definate cause a disruption amoung them."

"Will he be as hard to reach as the Avenegrs were?" I asked, taking in all of the extra information under Fury's name.

"If we strike at the right time, he won't." The Soldier replied. "But this will mean we will be in board day light."

"Do you reckon we will be successful?" I asked, looking up at him.

"We have to be." He took the hologram disk off the table. "Strucker isn't giving us much of a chocie."

I nodded, knowing he was right. I swallowed a final mouthful of my lunch and stood up.

"I've already packed the van." He said, walking quickly out of the hall. "We need to leave now or we'll miss the window. You grab whatever weapons you want from the trunk later."

I nodded and we picked up our pace, opting to take the stairs down to the garage rather than the lift that would be slower with extra agents on it. The Soldier opened the car door and we both slid in quickly, barely able to put our seatbelts on before the Soldier pressed on the accelerator and we shot out of the garage. I reached into the backseat and grabbed a bunch of guns and knives, filling up my semi-empty utility belt.

"So what's the plan?" I asked the Soldier, sitting back in my seat and looking out of the window as the trees flew past.

"Our target travels down this streets here." The Soldier flicked up the GPS screen as he drove. "He grabs lunch from a pop-up stall just outside this building." He pointed to the map. "There are a series of high rises opposite, we can easily get onto the roof tops and eliminate the target."

I nodded and opened up the glove box, digging around in it for pain tablets, which I found right at the bottom. My stomach wasn't as bad, but I could still feel it and it was enough to be annoying. I cracked a couple of pills and swallowed them dry, the Soldier looking over at me briefly.

"Are you okay?" He asked, and I shoved the tray of tablets back into the glove box.

"Get your eyes back on the road." I grumbled, not wanting his sympathy.

"I just want to make sure you aren't a weakness for the mission." He replied. I shot him a glare but didn't say anything. We were silent for a couple of minutes before the Soldier shot into an alleyway and slammed on the breaks. I was use to these sudden stops and managed to keep my seat before I hurriedly unclipped my seatbelt. Before I could get out of the car, he grabbed my arm and handed me something.

"Wear this mask." He said. "It is too easy for us to be spotted in the daylight."

I nodded and put it on with my gloved hands, grabbing a black jumper out of the back and putting it on to hide my head a little more. We slid out of the car and Winter led the way amoung the buildings. We left up on top of them, taking a run up before we jumped to the next one, which was a little difficult considering the heavy rifles we had over our backs for the long-distance shot.

We eventually reached the building that was opposite the area the Soldier had mentioned on the GPS. It seemed to be on the top of a hotel, with a pool and deck area occupied by about four or five people. The Soldier and I didn't hesitate to shoot them with the quietest guns we had, piling the bodies out of our way in the corner of the roof.

We crouched down at the edge of the building, setting up our rifles before laying in wait. About a couple of minutes passed, both of us scanning and and down the street, before the Soldier stiffened.

"There." Winter whispered and I followed his gaze to see the man from the hologram walking down the street, right on schedule. We both loaded our guns and carefully aimed it. But as soon as I managed to get the man right on the middle of my shot, I saw something flash in his pocket. He immediatley looked up at the roof where the Soldier and I were, and we both ducked down as quickly as we could.

"Shit." The Soldier swore. "He's got a bullet lock." I looked at him in confusion and he explained quickly. "Its like a missile lock on planes, but it is a small device you can put in your pocket that beeps when someone has a gun aimed at you.

"What do we do now?" I hissed, my face literally pressed to the floor of the roof as I tried to hide from the target, even though the target had already seen us.

"We engage anyway." The Soldier said before peeking up over the target, who was now on the phone, still looking up at us.

We pulled the triggers on our rifles and started peppering our target with bullets. However, the bullets just bounced off the target's suit, causing the Soldier to swear under his breath. The target darted around the side of the building as crowds began to scream and scatter, causing us to loose sight of him. We quickly took down the rifles on their stands and threw them over our backs, jumping down from building to building until we reached the ground. The streets were slowly emptying until we were the only ones in the streets. The Soldier dug something out of his back pocket and threw it at me and I caught it quickly, seeing that it was a little communication device.

"We'll split up." He said, pulling his rifle back over his shoulder, his voice echoing in my ear. "Meet back here in 10 minutes."

I nodded and took off down a street, keeping my pace steadiy so I didn't run out of energy quickly. I pulled a smaller gun out of my back as my eyes darted around, no sign of the target. I saw a couple of people crouched behind a post box and I stared at them, causing them to shrink away in fear, but I ignored them and kept moving on.

"I've spotted the target." The Soldier's voice came through my ear. "He is getting into a black van."

There was a beeping in my back pocket and I pulled it out to see a small little GPS device that I didn't even know was in there. I saw a little red dot sppear on the screen and I began to move towards it, keeping my eyes aruond for any other danger. I got closer to the dot and crouched down beside a buildng, a black van flying past a couple of seconds later. I pulled a grenage out of my belt and threw it across the road, watching as flew up to underneath the car. A couple of seconds later, there was a loud boom and the car flipped forward, not blowing up, but severely damanged.

That's when I heard the way to familiar sound of the metal man from the Avengers flying.
