Chapter Fifteen - A Threat
Asguard was one of the most beautiful places I had ever seen in my life, probably because I had never seen much outside of a cell or training room, or at least that I could remember. Everything was just so... perfect.
The palace from the outside looked exactly like the dream Loki had put into my head, but obviously much better in real life. The gardens were the same, I wanted to stay in them forever, but Loki said that there was plenty more to see outside of the palace grounds.
The town was probably my favourite part. All of the houses still had some sort of shining gold or silver in them, but nothing as fancy as the palace, and I liked that. The streets were full of people dressed in all different coloured clothes, laughing and chatting to each other as they walked. Most barely noticed me and Loki, or Loki at least, and when a few did, they just looked at him.
"I'm not exactly the most liked." Loki chuckled when he noticed me watching everyone's reaction. I looked up at him, but he didn't elaborate. As we walked, there were several stalls set up along the road and when Loki noticed me taking an interest in a couple of them, we stopped and he let me look. One shop in particular caught my eye, a jewellery shop. I wasn't one for fancy trinkets, probably because I hadn't owned many, if any, in my life. But I couldn't help but be drawn to the bracelets, and one in particular. It seemed to be made from some sort of sandy-coloured stone that shined slightly in the sun. I ran my finger along it curiously, loving the rough look but smooth feel.
"Brown moonstone." A voice spoke up and a woman walked over to the other side of the stall. She was clearly the owner, she was covered in all different kinds of necklaces and bracelets that were for sale. She smiled at my shocked expression at her sudden appearance and nodded to the bracelets that was hanging up that I was touching. "Its been used in jewellery for over two thousand years, rather stunning, isn't it?" I nodded, not sure what I should be saying to this.
The woman looked behind me at Loki, who was looking at a different part of the stall before she looked back at me.
"The qualities of moonstone will also help you." She said, smiling at the hidden meaning of her words, which I didn't understand. She noticed my confused expression and nodded over at Loki. I was still confused about what she meant by 'qualities' but I didn't question her, nodding as if I understood. I continued to admire the bracelet while the woman attended to another customer that had approached the store.
"You can get that if you want." Came Loki's voice in my ear and I jumped, spinning around to look up at him as he smiled at me. "Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you."
"I don't have any money." I said softly, dropping my hand from the bracelet.
"I have some." He smiled and dug into the pockets of his fancy clothes. I honestly felt very out of place with my dark baggy clothing. He reached up and grabbed the bracelet off the hook, handing his money to the lady who had come back over to us. She thanked him and gave me a wink when Loki's back was turned. I turned around quickly, slightly uneasy about the woman. Loki didn't notice and smiled down at me.
He held the bracelets out to me and slowly took it, rolling up the sleeve of my jumper and clipping the two sides of the bracelet together. I smiled down at it before looking up at him. His eyes were glued to my arm and I followed his gaze, realizing that my horrific bruises and scars scattered all over my wrist were showing. I quickly pulled my sleeve back down and ducked my head and wrapped my arms around my waist as if to comfort myself, looking away from him. There was a couple of seconds of awkward silence before he spoke up.
"I have one last place that I think you would like." He said, his voice slightly tense. I nodded and kept my head down as I followed him away from the crowded streets. I relaxed slightly when I was away from the crowds and loud noises, but I was still very aware that Loki had seen my weaknesses.
We walked for a little while and I kept my head down most of the time, except for when I was checking that Loki was still walking and in front of me. Eventually, the ground under my feet changed from cobblestones to a dark wood and I looked up to see that we were on a jetty at the start of a shore line. My eyes widened and I looked beyond the jetty in amazement.
"This is the edge of Asguard." Loki spoke up, smiling softly when he saw my shocked expression. The water was a deep blue and completely wave free. It went on for at least 200 metres before it disappeared into mist.
"It's beautiful." I said. I had never seen such large bodies of water, expect for in pictures. It looked so perfect.
"Come on." Loki beckoned, walking towards the edge of the jetty. I followed him, still looking around in amazement. We walked to the very edge and Loki sat down, taking off his shoes and letting his feet dangle into the water. He patted the space next to him and I hesitantly sat down, slowly taking off my shoes and cautiously dipping my toes into the water. I immediately pulled them back, letting out a small squeal. Instantly, I clapped my hands over my mouth and blushed violently, thoroughly embarrassed.
"Is it cold?" He teased, chuckling and I nodded, slowly taking my hands away from my mouth. He moved his feet around in the water, creating small ripples, and I hesitantly put my toes into the water again. I was hit with a shiver from how cold it was, but I persisted and soon I had both my feet in the water, my legs crossed. I slowly moved them around, loving the feel of actual clean water. Loki watched me, smiling softly.
"Have you ever been to the beach?" He asked after a couple of seconds of silence and I looked up at him, shaking my head before I looked back down at the water. I uncrossed my legs and my foot hit the water with a slight splash, splattering Loki slightly. I looked up at him with wide eyes and he raised an eyebrow humorously.
"Oh you're on." He grinned, flicking water in my direction. It hit me on my calf, which was now exposed since I had rolled up my pants so they didn't get wet. There were scars littering my ankles from cuffs the HYDRA scientists often restrained me with, but they weren't the worst scars I had.
I quickly moved my legs out of the way so he couldn't splash me anymore before I dipped my hands in the water and threw it at him. He tried to duck and missed most of it, except for a part that got the side of his face. He gave me a humorous glare and I giggled quietly before a cough interrupted us and we both looked up sharply to see one of the guards from the palace standing at the edge of the jetty.
"Your Highness, the King wishes to see you." He said emotionlessly before turning around and walking away from the jetty, back through the crowds of people. I watched him go before I slowly looked up at Loki.
"Your Highness?" I repeated, raising an eyebrow. Loki gave me a small smile and began to walk back down the jetty.
"My mother and Odin are the Queen and King of Asguard." He replied and I stumbled slightly in shock, causing him to smile at me. "Don't worry, I'm adopted, so it doesn't really apply to me. Thor however is the next in line for the throne." I suddenly felt embarrassed for treating Frigga so casually, and even Thor as well.
We weaved our way back through the crowds in the city, my anxiety spiking slightly at the number of people all around me that could have easily been threats. Thankfully, we made it back to the palace unharmed and when the guards let us in, we found ourselves in the throne room. The grey haired man was sitting on the gold throne, two guards standing not far behind him, with Frigga and Thor standing just in front of the throne. When Frigga met my gaze, she gave me a small smile and I instantly ducked my head, knowing I should be showing respect to her.
"I am told you have magic, mortal." Came the man's voice, sounding rather unfriendly. I saw Loki stiffen out of the corner of my eye, but he didn't say anything. "But yet you have no magic background. You could be seen as quite the danger."
"She is not a danger." Loki said, his voice tightly controlled as he took a step forward. "She is just having trouble controlling her power at the moment. What she needs is proper guidance." I looked up slightly at him and saw him looking over at Frigga pointedly.
"We have no business with mortals." The grey haired man stood up. "Especially not ones that could threaten the safety of Asguard."
"Odin dear." Frigga interrupted, causing the King, who I figured was called Odin, to look over at her. "I would be happy to teach Emily how to control her power. It would be no trouble."
"She is a threat." Odin said firmly. "I will not risk having a mortal who is uncontrollable walking around Asguard." Loki took a step forward, anger basically radiating off him, but Frigga held out a hand from where she was still standing near Odin with Thor. Loki stopped, but his fists were clenched tightly.
"I don't have to stay." I spoke up softly, slowly looking up at Odin. "I can go back to Stark Tower if it really is too dangerous for me to stay here."
"No." Loki looked down at me immediately, his tone firm before he looked back up at Odin with a glare. "She is staying until she can control her power enough to not loose control again."
"I don't think you are exactly in a position to be making demands." Odin took a step towards Loki. "You're meant to be banished." Loki clenched his jaw and stayed silent. "You are breaking many rules by bringing a mortal here."
"Loki just leave it." I whispered to him, my heart pounding as my eyes darted fearfully between Odin and Loki. "We can go back to Stark Tower and Bruce can just make more bracelets for me." I could basically feel the tension in the room, it was putting me on edge and it felt like Odin and Loki were seconds away from a fight. "Please, lets just go." Loki sighed heavily and glared at Odin for a couple more seconds before turning around to face me. The tension faded from his body a little bit, but there was still a spark in his eye.
"We'll go somewhere else." He gave me a small smile before gently grabbing my hand and teleporting us away in a flash of green.
