Chapter Eight - A Slight Accident
When the lift doors eventually opened, I was immediately recognised the red plush carpet of the bedroom level. I slowly walked over to my door, wiping away a stray tear rolling down my cheeks as I twisted the door handle and opened it up. I stepped in and shut it behind me, double checking I had locked it, before I let the tears flow. I tried to cry as quietly as possible, walking down the small hallway into the kitchen area, struggling to wipe away all of the tears flowing down my cheeks. I slowly climbed onto the bed, curling myself up into a tight ball and sobbing silently. My heart was pounding painfully against my chest and my whole body was shaking. I felt the monster in my stomach stir, taking advantage of my weakened state. I struggled to keep it down, clutching my hands to my chests. I continued to sob, trying to not choke on my sobs and trying to hold back the monster from breaking free.
Slowly, I ran out of tears to cry and my body was so emotionally exhausted that I just lay limply on the bed, my face and pillow soaked with tears. I wrapped my arms tighter around myself and let my eyes flutter shut.
"Here she is." A voice sneered in Russian, which I immediately noticed. "The rebellious experiment." I was roughly pulled into a completely metal room with a single grey chair in the middle. The hand around my thin arm squeezed painfully and I let out a feeble cry.
"Shut it bitch." The voice dragging me growled roughly. I tried to stand up as he dragged me, but my legs were weak and he was moving too fast. We reached near the chair and I was thrown onto the floor roughly, causing me to cry out in pain again. Someone stepped forward as I struggled to stand up and grabbed my hair, yanking my head back roughly. Tears immediately pricked my eyes and I winced from the bright lights, just making out the face of Strucker. I struggled in his grip, tears rolling down my cheeks and he just chuckled.
"This is what you get for speaking out." He smirked. "This will teach you to shut your mouth. You have no other life except here. This is where you belong." He yanked my hair back more and I cried out in pain, causing him to slap his gloved hand across my face sharply.
"Keep your mouth shut." He hissed, my cheek stinging painfully. He pulled me up onto my feet, still gripping my hair and threw me onto the chair. Several guards stepped forward and rolled me onto my back, pinning down my shoulders as I tried to struggle away. One of them slapped their hand over my face, muffling my cries of pain. They clipped metal bands around my forearms and ankles, pinning me too the table. They eventually stepped away, leaving me to struggle weakly in the restraints. Another person moved closer and I looked over with teary eyes to see Zola standing there, a screen in his hand. He swiped across it and there was the sound of a machine whirring behind me. I instantly began to struggle again, thrashing around in the bonds. Something metal clamped around my head and immediately, pain ripped through my skull. I screamed loudly, thrashing around violently as the electric pain pulse in my head, feeling like my brain was going to explode.
My head was filled with bright light and suddenly everything went blank and I fell limp. The metal thing was removed from my head and I heard voices nearby. One came closer to me.
"What's your name?" The voice growled in rough Russian.
"B12." I answered immediately, the only thing that popped into my head. I slowly opened my eyes, bright lights filling my vision.
"Good." The voice said smirked.
"Emily!" A voice yelled out and immediately I bolted upright. My chest was heaving and sweat was rolling down my forehead. There was the sound of crackling and I rubbed my teary eyes, scrambling back in shock when I saw that my whole bed was covered in fire.
"Emily!" The voice yelled again and I looked through the rising flames to see someone standing in a big red and gold metal suit. They were throwing water into the fire but it wasn't doing anything. The person in the suit noticed my fearful expression and a couple of seconds later, the face part of the suit disappeared revealing Tony's face.
"Emily, its just me." He said, holding out a metal hand cautiously, eyes darting to the fire slowly spreading across the room. "Can you... can you control the fire?" I shook my head, eyes filling with tears from the heat and from fear.
Suddenly the door burst open, slamming against the wall and I jumped, scrambling back in the sheets until my back was pressed against the bed head. Tony looked over at the hallway hidden from my view and seconds later, someone appeared next to Tony and I immediately recognised it as Loki.
"What the hell?" He breathed out, eyes wide as they darted over to the flames before he looked up to me. I met his gaze with my own wide eyes, a couple of tears spilling out of my eyes. Loki rolled up his sleeves, visibly sweating and began to move towards the flames. Tony reached out with a metal hand and grasped Loki's arm, pulling him back.
"You can't just walk through the fire!" Tony looked at him as if he was crazy.
"I can't just leave her in there!" Loki glared at Tony, both of them having to raise their voices to be heard over the slowly growing flames. "She's gonna end up getting herself burnt!"
He wrenched himself out of Tony's grip and took a deep breath, surrounding himself in his green magic before he walked through the flames. I watched him fearfully, afraid the fire was going to burn him, but when he reached me, unburnt, I let out a small sigh of relief. His green magic disappeared from around him and he offered me a small smile. Sweat was tricking from his forehead and his black hair was sticking to his skin. I didn't dare to move, afraid that if I did, I could make the flames worse and hurt him or Tony. Loki held a hand out to me and my eyes darted down to it before I hesitantly reached out and place my hand in his. Sparks were still jumping over my palms, but he didn't wince, instead gently pulling me forward and surrounding both of us in his green magic. I cautiously walked through the flames surrounding my bed, clutching Loki's hand tightly, afraid that his magic would fail and we would be swallowed up by the flames.
As soon as we made it though the flames unscathed, I breathed out a sigh of relief and looked back at the flames which were slowly creeping towards my now empty bed. I watched them with wide, teary eyes.
"Emily." Loki spoke up softly and I looked up at him, hastily wiping away my tears from my face. "Can you please let go of my hand?" I looked down and saw that I was clutching his hand tightly. Immediately, I let go of it and looked away, not wanting to get yelled at. But instead of yelling, all I heard was the flames sizzling rapidly and I looked up sharply to see Loki covering them with his green magic that seemed to take on a watery appearance, but was still green. Slowly, the green magic put out the flames, beginning to fill the room up with smoke. As soon as I started coughing, Tony pulled me towards him and pulled me away. My instincts caused me to pull away from him immediately and he turned to me.
"Emily, we have to get out of here." He said, mask beginning to cover his face again. "It's not good for us to be inhaling smoke. It will damage our lungs. Come on." He beckoned for me to follow him out and I hesitantly looked over at Loki, who was still trying to battle the flames.
"Go." He urged me. "I'll be right out." I hesitated for another second before hurrying after Tony, coughing as smoke swirled around me, slowly becoming thicker. I saw him open up the door of my room and immediately all of the smoke billowed out into sitting area outside all of the rooms. I stumbled out, eyes streaming and stinging from the smoke and Tony caught me just before I fell face first onto the carpet. I coughed violently, covered in soot, hair sticking to my face and hands still sparking. Tony rolled me onto my side and held me steady as I coughed. A high pitched alarm began to go off and I jumped, causing Tony to rub my back comfortingly.
"It's just the fire alarm." He soothed. "It's okay."
"What the hell is happening?" Asked a groggy voice and I immediately recognised it as Clint's. There was the sound of several more doors opening and I slowly opened my stinging eyes to see several blurry figures beginning to walk over. I struggled to sit up, not liking all of the sudden attention.
"Guys back off." Said Tony, looking up at them all. "Someone get Emily a glass of water." Someone's blurry figure hurried off and came back a couple of seconds later with a glass of water. Tony held it up to my lips and the cool liquid trickled down my throat as I gulped at it. Once I was finished with it, I slowly sat up, with the help of Tony, and rubbed my tears away with my sooty hand.
"Anyone care to explain what happened?" Interrupted Clint. "Honestly, we jut get to bed and are being woken up again!" I looked up at him with puffy eyes. Tony looked over at me too and I looked away from them both.
"A nightmare." I croaked, looking down at my thin and dirt hands.
"What happened to the bracelets?" Asked another voice which I recognised as Nat's. "Weren't they meant to limit your power?"
"They're here." Interrupted a new voice and everyone immediately turned to see Loki stumbling out of my room, completely covered in soot and holding something in his hand. Tony slowly stood up and took them out of Loki's hand and I just managed to see that they had been burnt clean in half. My eyes widened and my heartrate began to pick up again as everyone slowly began to look at me. When Loki coughed however, they looked away, Wanda handing him a cup of water.
"I do have backup bracelets." Bruce offered, pushing his glasses up his nose. "I haven't finished testing them completely, but they're better than nothing." He stepped forward and handed me a pair of identical bracelets, except they were more solidly built. I reached out with a shaky hand and carefully took the bracelets, sliding them only my slightly sparking wrists. I tightened them and immediately, the sparks faded from my hands. I slowly looked up at them all, shrinking under their gazes and looking back down at the ground.
"I'm sorry." I said quietly. "For the bracelets and the fire. "
"It's not your fault." Tony shook his head. "We're just glad you aren't hurt, or at least not badly. And don't worry about the room, I will get it fixed."
"But where will she sleep now?" Asked Wanda and Tony paused for a second, thinking.
"She can sleep in my room." Offered Loki and I sharply looked over at him, causing him to give me a comforting smile. "Don't worry, I won't be able to sleep for the rest of the night anyway."
"I don't think that's a good idea Reindeer Games." Tony said, watching Loki with a wary and curious look.
"If she looses control, I'm probably the only one who can control her again." Loki's personality switched again as he looked at Tony with a glare. Tony hesitated, meeting his glare, before he sighed.
"Fine." He muttered. "But try anything and I'll murder you." Loki clenched his jaw and fisted his hands, but didn't say anything. Tony stood up and turned to face everyone else.
"Okay, back to bed everyone." Tony said, his suit disappearing. Loki watched everyone go before standing up, stumbling slightly. Tony turned back around just in time to help steady him.
"You should go down to the Lab Reindeer Games." He said. "You probably inhaled quite a lot of smoke."
"Don't pretend you care Stark." Loki growled, pulling his arm out of Tony's grip. Tony watched him before muttering something under his breath and helping me stand up. Loki moved forward and helped Tony support me as we slowly walked towards the door which I assumed was Loki's room. My legs trembled as I walked, I had used a lot of my power and it was taking its toll.
Loki opened up his door and he and Tony carefully helped me over to the bed in the middle of the room. I couldn't see much of the room, it was dark with the curtains drawn and all of the lights off. I realized I must have slept through the rest of the day.
"Let JARVIS know immediately if something goes wrong." Tony told me as I slowly lay down on the bed. I nodded weakly and he gave me a small smile, gently moving a strand of my sweaty hair out of my face before looking up at Tony. He gave him a glare before turning and moving out of the room, shutting the door. Loki was silent for a couple of seconds before he let out a big sigh, visibly deflating. He turned to me and gave me a small smile, barely visible in the darkness of the room.
"Get some sleep." He smile, back to his nice personality. "I'm going to go have a shower." I nodded and waited until he had left before I closed my eyes, surrendering to the exhaustion.
