Chapter One - Safe At Last
AN: Hahaha faustexas ! You honestly think I would leave you on a cliffhanger like that? I am not that mean... or am I?
AN #2: Also, just letting you know, this story might not completely flow in with the other one as this one hasn't been edited yet, which means that there could be some reference to old chapters in the first book that I cut out. I promise I'll try to edit this one as quickly as possible!
Welcome back y'all to this crazy adventure that this series has been so far! I'm so glad that you all decided to move onto this second book after the reading the first one, which I hope you enjoyed. If you haven't read the first book (The Experiment) yet, definitely go to that first or nothing will make sense!
Anyway, I hope you all enjoy!
No one said anything. The alien creature, Safak, stared at us all and I strained my memory to try and remember where I had heard the name before, but my mind was too foggy with pain as I remained in the arms of the raven-haired man. I would have tried to escape from his grasp, but my body was so full of pain that I could barely think clearly. I think it was only the adrenaline that was keeping me conscious.
"Not the reaction I was expecting." The purple creature frowned looking down at all of us. "Maybe you didn't hear me the first time. I am Safak, Son of –".
"Yeah, we heard you the first time." Interrupted the man in the metal suit, waving his hand like he was shooing away a fly. "No need to bore us all over again." His helmet had disappeared, revealing a bruised and scratched face.
Safak swung his gaze over to the metal man, watching him as he continued. "Look, we don't know who your daddy is, and we don't care either. So why don't you go back to wherever you came from and we can all go back home."
"You know, it's quite ironic." Safak chuckled like this whole thing was a joke. "In Earth 616, all of you knew my father's name. You, Iron Man, actually died defending the others here."
He gestured to all of us here and I could sense the confusion in the air growing, which just seemed to make him grin more.
"You were dead." He pointed to the woman in the black clothes with the red hair. "And you were an old man." He pointed to the blonde man the Soldier had been fighting. "The rest of you were alive, or at least for now."
He stepped towards us again and everyone stiffed again, the man Safak had called Iron Man raising his hand defensively.
"But one of you that wasn't in 616 was you." He raised a massive hand and pointed at me, causing the raven-haired man's grip to tighten on me. "I'm curious about you."
"Leave her alone." The man holding me snapped.
"I put in a request for you." He continued like he hadn't heard me. "I had heard of this HYDRA group in 616 making enhanced individuals. Since my father failed to conquer 616, I decided to try my luck here, but build a better, more enhanced army. You're the test run, and I have to say, I'm surprised that you are actually still alive. Many died to get where you are at now, your human DNA is so fiddly. But I am keen to see what you can actually do."
He gestured to Zola standing next to him, who had an iPad in his hands. I stiffened in the arms of the man who was holding me, my heart missing a beat. But before Zola could even do anything, there was a flash of green and everything around me disappeared.
I landed on something soft and I blinked rapidly in fear and tried to clear the darkness in my eyes. Suddenly, everything appeared and I flinched away from the bright lights as I saw someone kneel down in front of me, recognizing it as the man who had been holding me. I looked around sharply, wincing as I moved my bruised and battered body, and saw that I was in a very fancy building with the rest of the Avengers, who had collapsed onto the floor. Something about the place seemed familiar, but I just couldn't place it.
"Stay still." The raven-haired man said, holding up a slightly shaky hand. He looked drop-dead exhausted, big black rings under his dull green eyes with his skin drawn tightly across his face. He looked in desperate need to a hearty meal and a good nights sleep. I doubted I looked much better either through, from the faint memories I had of the last new months, things hadn't been great.
The man raised his hand over my head and I immediately flinched away, a strangled sob escaping my mouth as the numerous broken ribs and other bones in my body moved. I quickly covered my face with my hands and curled up against the back rest of the couch that I had found myself on. I braced myself for the hit, but it never came.
I slowly uncurled myself and looked up at the raven-haired man with teary eyes, both from fear and pain.
"It's okay." The raven-haired man whispered, slowly lowering his hand. "I was just going to heal you. I won't hurt you, okay?" I didn't say anything, my eyes darted around the fancy building until I spotted the Soldier, who was pulling what looked like a bullet out of his leg.
Suddenly, bright green light surrounded me and a sharp tingling feeling began to travel all over my body. I stiffened under the cocoon of green light that surrounded me, my heard pounding hard in fear as adrenaline pumped around my body. Then, out of nowhere, sharp pain began to attack my ribs and my left wrist, causing me to scream out in pain. I thrashed around on the couch, trying to escape the painful green light.
Someone snarled nearby and the loud sound of glass shattering reached my ears, causing me to flinch away, but this time, there was no pain from my body. Someone picked me up and I immediately recognised the metal arm and solid chest of the Soldier hidden under his tough clothes. I curled up against his comforting body as he held me and peeked out from under his arm to see the raven-haired who had the painful green light now laying slowly clambering out of a hole in the wall.
"Buck, calm down." The man with the shield and the blonde hair said, stepping towards the Soldier and me. The Soldier immediately stepped back, holding me protectively against him. He was the only one I knew here, the only one I felt safe with.
"Buck, he's just trying to help her." The blonde man persisted, stepping forward again. "You're both badly injured, Emily more so than you. Loki can heal her, it just might hurt a little bit."
I looked back over at the raven-haired man, who was now picking plaster out of his hair, his body looking more exhausted than before. There was a tall, very solidly built man with long blonde hair standing next to the raven-haired man, who bent down a little and whispered something into the raven-haired man's ear.
The raven-haired man stepped forward again, nodding, and held out a hand to stop the man with the shield walking any further forward. The Soldier stepped back again with me, his whole body tense as the black-haired man walked forward.
"I wont hurt either of you." He said. "Em, I need to give you your memories back. I need you to know what none of us will hurt you."
He stepped forward again and surprisingly, the Soldier didn't step back, but just stiffened. The raven-haired man held out his hand and the green light lit up in his palm, causing me to stiffen and flinch against the Soldier's chest. I didn't think about what the green light actually was or how it just randomly appeared out of his palm, I didn't really want to.
The unfamiliar man reached us and carefully put his finger on my tremble, the Soldier ready to pull me away at any moment. The man's finger was cold and slightly shaky, silence filling my mind for a couple of seconds before everything burst to life.
Colours were flashing through my head so quickly it made me dizzy. There were sounds darted by with the memories that began to suddenly bombard my fragile mind. There was screaming and yelling and crying, blood spilt over the floor in my memories as gunshots echoed. Flashes and voices flashed by, my brain slowly putting names to the faces. It was all so overwhelming and I felt myself becoming increasingly more dizzy, my stomach churning.
I remembered my time at HYDRA. I remembered the training, the missions, the nights, the pain, the torture. I remembered what Strucker and Zola did to me, I remembered what I did to other people. I remembered every one I killed, how I killed them.
I remembered my life before HYDRA. I remembered the Avengers. I remembered the Tower and the Compound. I remembered the laughs and all of the good memories I had formed. I remembered Loki, Thor, Tony and Steve. I remembered Natasha and Clint and Bruce and Wanda and Bucky. I remembered everything.
Then suddenly it all stopped.
I opened my eyes, even though I didn't remember closing them, and saw people crowded around me, my face pressed to cold tiles. I blinked tears rapidly out of my eyes and struggled to sit up, my arm shaking too much and causing me to collapse. Someone caught me and I twisted in their grip, fear causing my heart to pound. I immediately met now familiar green eyes, but the usual spark had disappeared.
"Loki?" I whispered, still very overwhelmed by everything I had just remembered. I uncertainly reached out to touch his cheek like I had to actually had to check it was him.
"What happened?" I asked, sitting up quickly as I looked around to see all of the other Avengers around me, their faces varying from worry to confusion. "What did you do to me?"
"Your memories were blocked." He explained, slowly loosening his arms from where they were wrapped around my waist to stop me from falling to the floor. "I just had to trigger them." He must have seen the horror on my face because he quickly added. "I couldn't see any of them, don't worry."
"Let her go!" A voice yelled and I jumped, my heart missing a beat as I twisted around in Loki's grip to see Bucky struggling against Steve, who looked like he was having some difficulty. "Let her go!"
My heart immediately tugged at seeing Bucky yelling, my brain darting to my newly discovered memories of what we went through in HYDRA. I immediately pulled myself out of Loki's grip, scrambling towards Steve and Bucky.
"No Emily!" Loki tried to reach for me to stop me, but I was too far away. I stumbled towards Bucky as best as I could with my half-healed body and he broke free of Steve, kneeling down and picking me up. He held me against his chest tightly, his arms wrapped around my back, holding me protectively as he glared at everyone else.
I couldn't hold my emotions back any longer and broke down, sobbing into his chest. His arms tightened around me, not enough to be painful yet, and he turned me away from the rest of the Avengers. I felt sick, not only from getting all of my emotions back at once, but because of what had been in those memories.
"We killed so many people." I whispered to the Soldier, my words broken up my sobs, keeping my tone low enough so the others didn't hear.
"I know." He said simply, his voice a little rough before his arms tightened again, and a couple of seconds later I knew why.
"Emily." Tony said and I hid my face further into Bucky's chest. I didn't want to be seen crying, I didn't want to be seen showing any weakness.
"Emily." Tony said again. "You should let Reindeer Games finish healing you."
"He won't touch her." Bucky snarled.
"He won't hurt her Buck." Steve sighed off to the side. "She needs to be healed."
"Buck let me go." I whispered, knowing that they were right. But Bucky didn't let me go, if anything he moved me closer to him. "Buck, please. Everything hurts."
That was kind of a lie, I wasn't in excruciating pain, but I wasn't exactly comfortable either. Bucky hesitated but slowly let me go, letting Loki crouch down in front of me with his green light. It slowly travelled towards me and I flinched against Bucky, who was also covered in the green light. He didn't seemed to be as injured as me, but he wasn't exactly best off.
My body was overcome with a tingling feeling and I gasped softly as the feeling travelled to the injured parts of my body, causing me to flinch and twist slightly. Bucky held me tightly as I watched in slight amazement as the bullet holes in his skin stitched themselves together.
Suddenly, the green light suddenly disappeared from around both of us and we looked over sharply to see Loki collapse backwards, Tony rushing forward to catch him before his head could hit the floor. Thor immediately stepped forward and looked down at his brother in worry.
"He's exhausted." Tony said. "He needs to rest before he can heal you both again." He looked up at us. "Are you two okay for now?"
We both nodded, in sync as usual, and I noticed the creeped out expression in some of the Avenger's eyes, giving me a sick sort of satisfaction, which I immediately tried to stuff down. Bucky held me against him as Thor picked up his brother, taking him upstairs to the bedrooms.
"You should both go have a shower." Steve looked down at us both. "You are both covered in... blood and dirt."
I looked down at my HYDRA clothes and saw they were indeed drenched in my blood and torn in several places, which was surprising since they seemed basically indestructible. Bucky helped me stand up, even though I couldn't feel much pain in my body, He kept a steady hand just away from my shoulder as we walked up the stairs.
He left me outside of my room and I slowly opened it up to see it basically unchanged from when I had left. I slowly stepped inside, shutting the door behind me before I walked into the bathroom, not wanting to dwell on the memories in the room too much, despite them being good.
I pulled off my bloody HYDRA clothes and threw them out my sight, turning on the shower and stepping under the freezing water. I shivered immediately, but didn't turn up the warmth of the water. I looked at all of the fancy soaps and shampoos and conditioners but turned away from them, despite my hair being quite dirty.
After a couple of minutes of just letting the blood wash off me, I stepped out and wrapped a towel around my scarred body, keeping my eyes away from the mirror so I didn't have to see my reflection. I walked back towards the massive cupboard in the main area of my bedroom and stared at large selection that I had forgotten about. Not spending any brain power on looking through them all, I picked out a loose grey top and grey pants, my new favourite colour from the last few months.
As I turned back around to mybed, I paused and sighed, pulling off the blankets and one pillow, laying themdown on the floor. I grabbed my weapons from the bathroom and put them under mypillow, feeling a little safer immediately before I sunk into the peacefulsleep that I desperately needed.
