Chapter Eleven - Flatline
LOKI POV
"Mr. Laufeyson." The voice of the Stark's Artificial Intelligence broke through my fitful sleep and I slowly opened my eyes, sitting up a little and pushing my hair out of my face.
"Mr. Laufeyson." The AI spoke again. "Apologies for waking you, but I thought you would like to know that Mr. Stark and Dr. Banner are on their way."
"Thanks." I muttered, immediately making the blanket that was now half on the floor disappear before I quickly used my magic to change my clothes to avoid any questioning from Stark or Banner.
I rubbed my tired eyes and looked over at Emily, who hadn't moved from the last time I had seen her. I slowly stood up and walked over to her, my heart squeezing at the sight of her extremely pale skin before I gently took her small wrist in my fingers again. The fluttering pulse was still there and I looked over at the machine holding all of her vitals to see there had been a slight decrease in her already low heartrate.
"Any change Loki?" A voice spoke up from behind me and I immediately dropped Emily's wrist, spinning around to see Stark and Banner walking in.
"Her heartrate has decreased." I replied and I immediately saw Banner's eyebrows furrow.
Both of them walked over to the machines and Stark drew up a projection for all of us to see, which seemed to be a long of Emily's heartrate the whole time that she had been connected to the machines. I saw that there was definitely a decrease and it was now hovering just above a concerning speed.
"The antibiotics don't seem to be helping." Banner murmured and looked back at the drip, which was half empty now. "She's going to need something stronger."
"Do we even have anything stronger that won't harm her?" I asked and Stark immediately walked over to the cabinets and fridges, pulling out a collection of vials and handing them to Banner.
"Try this stuff." He said, worry evident in his voice. "I don't care which one, just do it."
Banner immediately began to fiddle with the drip, adding in one of the vials of antibiotics. My eyes darted back to Emily as the projection of her heartrate disappeared and I watched the faint rise and fall of her chest.
"Hello brother." Thor spoke from behind me and my magic sparked on my fingers from the sudden shock. I turned around to look at Thor, giving him a weak glare before I turned my attention back to Emily.
"Has she improved?" Thor asked.
"We're working on it." Stark's voice was tenser now and my eyes immediately darted to him as I saw him flicking through multiple projections.
I looked towards Emily again and moved a little closer to the bed, discreetly touching her hand as I tried to look back into her mind again. Immediately, I was hit with a wave of lightheadedness and I fell backwards, severing the connection as I felt Thor quickly grab me.
"Brother, are you alright?" He asked, the worry in his tone distinct.
"Her respiration rate just significantly decreased." Stark spoke up and I looked over at him, still trying to bring my breathing back to normal.
"Yeah, I got that." I muttered, pushing myself out of Thor's arms as I stood up.
Stark grabbed the scanning device that I had seen him use a couple of times on Emily and hurriedly turned it on, throwing it above her quickly as it began to scan her body, throwing up even more projections. Stark rapidly flicked through them and I walked quickly over to him, desperately trying to see what was happening to her.
"Her blood pressure is critical." Banner spoke up and I looked over at him to see him looking up at us, his eyes full of worry. "It must be the poison, it is refusing the antibiotics."
"You need to do something." I demanded.
"Just wait Loki." Stark flicked through the projections so quickly that I couldn't even read them anymore.
"We don't have time to wait." I snapped at him. "She's -".
Suddenly, a horrible dragged beeping filled the room and we all immediately froze. My eyes immediately darted to the heartrate monitor and I saw the clear flat line on the screen.
"Bruce, get the defibrillator!" Stark yelled as he suddenly jumped into action.
Banner abandoned the machines he was looking at and ran to the other side of the room, grabbing what must have been the defibrillator off the wall. Stark quickly pulled the blanket's away from Emily's chin and tore open her shirt.
"I'm sorry Emily." He murmured under his breath as the shirt split in two straight down the middle.
I immediately took Emily's hand, my fingers brushing over her wrist to find no pulse as I closed my eyes and tried to find some sort of flicker of consciousness in her mind. The darkness was endless, but I continued to try and push through. I was only slightly aware of what was happening around me, I tried to keep all of my focus on finding her consciousness.
"Brother!" A voice yelled and immediately severed my concentration as I opened my eyes to see Stark holding the defibrillator over her chest, which was only covered by her underwear, which was the last thing on my mind right now.
"Step back Loki." Stark said and I immediately pulled my hand away from Emily.
"Clear!" Stark yelled and Emily's whole body jerked as Stark pressed down on her chest.
All of our eyes darted back to the heart rate monitor, but the flat line continued to remain there on the screen, causing my heart to pound faster.
"Again." I muttered, though I wasn't sure that Stark was even listening me as he looked back down at the defibrillator. He fiddled with a couple of things before yelling out again just before Emily's whole body jerked.
"Again." I muttered before Stark sent another jolt through her. The flatline still remained on the screen and I stared at it intently, as if I was almost willing her heart to start again.
"Brother." Thor murmured and nausea roiled in my stomach as I heard the sympathy in him voice.
"No." I muttered to him, keeping my eyes firmly on the heart monitor as Stark continued to try and restart her heart, unsuccessfully.
"Brother." Thor repeated, this time in an even softer tone, and I clenched my hands.
"Shut up Thor." I muttered under my breath, refusing to give up hope.
I turned my attention back to Emily and my heart tightened every time that I saw her body jerk under the defibrillator. Banner looked away and so did Thor, but I refused to give up. Stark looked at me and I shook my head.
"Do it again." I said firmly.
"Loki, it's not working." Stark said, his voice tight with emotion.
"Do it Stark." I basically snarled.
Stark looked over at Banner, and then Thor before he put the defibrillator over the top of her chest again, sending another shock through her body. I held my breath looking down at Emily as I clenched my hands, praying to whoever would listen that her heart would start again.
Then, by some sort of miracle, there was a slow beep from the heart monitor. My own heart lept in my chest and I felt my legs almost buckle with relief as I saw her chest take in a shuddering breath. Everyone stared at her for a couple of seconds before Banner and Stark rushed into action, immediately grabbing a ventilator to help her breathe.
I managed to stumble over to a chair and sat down in it heavily, trying to calm down my harshly pounding heard, putting my head in my hands, running my hands through my hair. A hand landed on my shoulder and I looked up to see Thor standing next to me, his hand on my shoulder. He didn't say anything, which was I was grateful for, and we kept our eyes focused on Emily.
It took Stark and Banner quite a little while to bring her heartrate and breathing levels back to normal, with the use of many machines and Stark Tech. Eventually, they stepped away from Emily's faintly breathing body, Stark disappearing around one of the corners of the room while Banner slowly walked over to us.
"We are not 100% sure about what caused her to flatline." Banner spoke up, my eyes focused on him intently while Thor kept his hand on my shoulder, which I didn't bother to throw off. "But from what we can see from the scans, which are slightly blurry, we believe it may have been some sort of internal bleed from the wound. We would have to do a surgery again in the morning when we have rested properly, but at the moment, it seems like the poison is attacking whatever healing the antibiotics did, which possibly caused the internal bleed."
"Can you make sure it won't happen again?" I asked, wincing internally at how dull and broken my voice sounded.
"Only the surgery will be abele to deem how bad the internal bleed is." Banner replied. "We have put her on stronger antibiotics for now, which will hopefully speed up te healing process, but there is no full guarantee that it won't happen again, especially if the poison continues ot spread and begins to attack other previously healed internal injuries."
My eyes slid back towards Emily and I stared at her faintly rising and falling chest.
"This poison is unlike anything we've seen before." Banner continued. "Some of HYDRA's technology is way more advanced than ours, they might be the only ones who have a cure for something like this."
My eyes immediately darted back to Banner and he must have seen my hand clenching because he quickly spoke up again.
"That doesn't mean that we won't keep trying." He said. "If HYDRA has that kind of technology, we will be able to develop it as best as we can. But I just want to warn you, it will take some sort of magic for her to be 100% again."
Magic.
That's when it hit me. My magic wouldn't work, but I knew someone with stronger magic, especially in healing. I immediately sat up straight and Thor looked down at me, confusion in his eyes before I spoke.
"We need to go to Asguard."
