Chapter One : The Black Star (1/2)

They sat atop a lush, grassy hill admiring how the glittering stars stood out against the inky night sky. A comfortable silence sat between them as the relaxing warm breeze carassed their skin.

While most of the grass on the hill was green, some of it was washed in a navy hue instead with crystals lining the dark soil at their feet, reflecting the sky like shards of a mirror. This is what gave this particular place it's nickname the Navy Hills.

As Fearian sat with Darvin and Shaun, they let the fur on their skin tickle and dance with the breeze.

Meanians were the male race that possessed the strength of ten men in one body; they were much taller than average humans, to the point where a human's head only reached the Meanian's chest or stomach. Even their weight matched those of ten men.

These were the strongest men that ever lived. Unfortunately, they were near death because their land didn't provide the food and water they needed, leaving them helpless and desperate.

To survive, they hunted any species they could find to feed on before hunger could let their souls escape their bodies. Gladly, to ease their struggles, the human race offered their hand by sharing their supplies, but in exchange for the Meanians' strength.

Lots of Meanians spawned with various skin colours. Fearian, a Terror Meanian, was in his early thirties. His cinnamon-brown fur danced more wildly than before as the breeze blew against his face, letting his untied long, thick, orange sunset hair fly behind him like a fluttering flag.

His uniform was of a long crimson coat worn to protect his skin from the slight coolness, yet unbuttoned to reveal his long, loose-fitting oily shirt, followed by his brown oak trousers.

He himself preferred simplicity above all else. His eyes, red as rubies, sparkled under the full moonlight's command. However, what sat on his neck was the dark metal choker that held the red gem as blood. Its permanent glow kept Fearian alive, yet he wore his smile of finery, showing his current state of mind.

Darvin, in his twenties, was a bit shorter than Fearian. Darvin's crimson fur stood up from the cool night's air, and his red strawberry long hair brightened his warm coloured hue, tied loosely to be flown by the breeze. He wore his tawny cloak that descended to his waist along with his trousers that matched the colour of the soil ground he sat on.

Although it was spring, Darvin wore warmer clothing to keep his body's temperature high; this was what the Fire Meanians needed. His fiery orange eyes added warmth to his positive and calm, and even adorable appearance.

Shaun, the same age as Darvin, had his summer sky fur now barely moving as the breeze was done blowing, and his icy blue hair, where the bangs stopped swooshing, were all tied in a low ponytail.

His eyes were shining as the emeralds under the starlight as his eyes faced skyward at the stars. He wore his midnight blue sweater and ebony trousers to protect from the cold. He supported his eyesight with his spectacles that sat on his nose, yet he had to push them up now and then.

Finally, most Meanians were spawned with wings on their backs to soar the skies. Fearian and Darvin's were bat-like wings, while Shaun's were feathery.

Darvin glued his winged back to the grassy ground gently as he sighed. "Calm as usual, even fun when you have company."

"Yeah, we could do this every night." Fearian put his elbows on the grass.

"Can't believe we're finally seeing the stars again after a decade of dark clouds." Shaun folded his legs.

"What do you think brought the dark clouds?" Darvin's voice showed curiosity, and he turned to Fearian.

"I don't know, but for now, I don't care as long as the sky is clear."

"We thought it might've been the change of weather, and we thought we might finally get fresh water from the sky... But--"

"It stood there for a damn decade without a single drop, and it's like nature was mocking at us while we were thirsting." Fearian rolled his eyes.

"Remember how all of us put the buckets and bowls outside? All while the Fire Meanians ran fearfully for cover? It was kinda funny to me but of course... It was disappointing." Darvin agreed with him sadly.

As they sat silently for another moment, Fearian noticed something strange in the sky. Even though the sky was inky blue, a star black as darkness blocked the mysterious white light behind it.

It was like an eclipse, only with four legs rather than being circular.

Fearian tapped Shaun's knee for attention.

"Um, Shaun? Have you seen that star before?" Fearian asked with puzzlement as he pointed at the star he spotted.

When Shaun darted his eyes to the direction, his jaw dropped.

"It's a black star! The one I read about, well actually I read a little so... Uh here's what I know," Shaun said as he pushed his spectacles up before they slipped. "someone powerful trapped a person in the star for a thousand years, so that person can't escape unless someone else casts the same spell that the caster did to banish that person." Shaun tried to explain.

Fearian let out a whistle of impression. "Who could do that to someone?"

Darvin shrugged his shoulders in response.

"No, I mean seriously who could do that? What if one of our people did that?" Fearian looked at them for their answers or comments.

"How could there be another mage other than you, Fearian?" Darvin asked. "And how should we know? We have no idea of who that is nor the prisoner in the star, so why do you want to know anyway?"

"Just curious." Fearian smirked and raised an eyebrow.

"And what are you going to do once you find out?" Shaun scoffed.

"If it was important I'd show it to the king, that way he'll know what to do." Fearian answered confidently.

"Important like what?" Darvin smirked back at him.

"If it turned out that the one who's trapped was someone important, they could tell the king who did this to them, and the king will figure out. If not then... I'll find that evil guy who did this." Fearian explained with a chuckle.

"Or what if a wise mage banished that person because they were evil? Isn't it obvious? Most myths and legends were about banishment." Shaun added his theory.

"Who knows? Maybe it's just a different kind of star..."

Darvin trailed off to yawn.

"Tired already, Kit-Kat?" Fearian teased.

"Kit-Kat?" Shaun repeated with confusion.

"Fearian!"

"Even dad still calls you Kit-Kat to this day, want to know why Shaun?" Fearian laughed.

"Cause Darvin is a cat-person!" He laughed again but louder while Shaun giggled in return.

Darvin crossed his arms in defeat.

"Kit-Kat suits you actually," Shaun commented.

"Okay, that's it. Let's head back home before it gets late," Darvin announced as he stood, followed by Shaun, who did the same. But Fearian remained on the ground.

"Well, aren't you coming?" Darvin called him.

"I'll sit here for a little more then I'll... Catch up with you later." Fearian answered as he went back to looking at the stars.

"Alright, suit yourself." Shaun said as he and Darvin turned and walked away down the hill.

Fearian continued to watch closely at the black star as it was the one that caught his attention the most. But, after a moment, he started to take notice that the black star was somehow shrinking, or so Fearian thought. He blinked his eyes to make sure he witnessed it clearly; he rubbed his eyes quickly and saw it again.

Did the star just shrink? Fearian thought as he stared hard at it.

Maybe it was his imagination playing tricks on his tired mind, so he shrugged it off and stood up and followed his brother and friend.

"Alright guys wait for me!" Fearian called as he took a sprint after them.
