Chapter Five : The Penalty (2/2)

Even though the day was warm and bright, Fearian felt as if the sky was grey and gloomy when the men around him watched him like vultures as he walked the stony street. Whispers and scoffs bounced around and flew towards him like arrows, shooting his heart and cracking it more with harmful words.

His throat thickened, and his vision went blurry, yet he never looked ahead as he followed the guards, with the king himself leading the way silently. Fearian's heart hurt even more when he thought of his father's anger and the bond that is about to break again; misery and despair began to devour his mind.

After all this time, he tried to change for once in his dark life as the black sheep of this society, and it didn't go as planned because he never knew which path was right or wrong. He never knew what the men knew to be fine and good, and he could've known if he wasn't ignorant and stubborn in the past.

As Fearian was drowning in his thoughts, Darvin opened the house door, only for Onel to dash outside and head towards Fearian, and Darvin followed him at his heels.

"Fearian!" Onel called desperately as he approached him.

King Salvador raised his hand that signalled the guards to move away from Fearian.

Onel embraced him tightly, and Darvin did the same, but Fearian didn't move a muscle as tears kept rolling heavily from his eyes.

"Thank the Mighty Kings you're safe! I've heard about what happened and I-I came as fast as could a-and... Oh... At least you're fine." Onel panted with fatherly concern.

"You're okay, Fearian?"

They pulled themselves away from the hug, and he hadn't spoken yet. And when a silent moment passed, Onel's expression was replaced with anger.

"So you don't have anything else to say?! Putting my son in harm's way when he just grew older WHAT were you even THINKING?!" Onel pushed his son back with both hands. "What should I do with you?! I thought you changed yet you did it again! You kept making trouble and for what?!" He yelled tearfully and kept pushing violently as Darvin tried to stop him.

"Dad just stop!" Darvin begged.

"Why do you have to be this way?!" He kept yelling. Then he turned to the king.

"I-I'm truly sorry your majesty, I really am I just... I don't know what to do with him, please forgive us... " He finally stopped his violent behaviour as his body slumped into Darvin's arms, tired and devastated from complaints caused by his son.

"Your son was brought here to give his farewell," Salvador announced. "and once he's done Fearian Grevalon will leave the kingdom where he will no longer cause trouble." He flashed his golden eyes at Fearian as the men's murmurs and astonishment grew louder. And so Onel and Darvin's.

"No... No you can't be serious! Fearian this isn't true right?!" Darvin cried.

Fearian finally lifted his head to look at his family, the fur on his face was wet with fallen tears, and the shimmers in his ruby eyes grew brighter. His chest rose and went down for sorrowful gasps. He whimpered for a moment until he finally spoke with a broken voice.

"I really don't belong here," he said. "as he said... It's probably the best way to end the problem--"

"No it's not! There's got to be another way you can't just kick him out! This isn't fair! He's just struggling!" Darvin argued.

"Struggling?! You call that he was struggling when he almost killed the children?!" One of the men yelled.

"Enough," Salvador prevented an argument from coming. He looked at Fearian again. "Do you have anything else to say?"

"Can I see the boys? please?" He almost whispered.

"Fearian!" Onel didn't bother to bring the children because Gholt had already come running along with Bryan, this time, Gholt was wearing his little hood over his head. Fearian knelt once they approached, and they leapt and hugged him. And he hugged back.

"Glad that you're safe," he whimpered.

"You're not going to leave, are you?" Gholt pushed away with a sad tone, almost crying.

"Why are you leaving daddy?" Bryan let out his childish cry.

"Because I made a terrible mistake bringing you there, so I'm... Grounded myself," Fearian brushed his son's cheek with his thumb. "but you're going to stay with Uncle Darvin and Grandpa Onel and they're going to take good care of you." Fearian sniffed and sighed.

"No no no you can't leave!"

"Please don't leave!" The boys shrieked in sadness as Fearian stood up.

"I'm truly sorry, but I can't stay here." Fearian wept.

The boys couldn't stand any longer, so they turned and ran towards the king and grabbed his coat.

"Please don't do this to him! It's all my fault I-I cried because I wanted to hunt so badly a-a-and I wanted to be good at defending myself! Please don't do this I beg you please!" Gholt fell to his knees as he clutched to the king's coat.

"Make daddy be on a timeout because it's better than leaving!" Bryan moaned loudly in sorrow as he kept tugging the coat with tears raining from his peachy eyes. All while Salvador watched them longingly at his knees.

"I'm sorry children, but that wasn't any simple mistake," Salvador apologised as he gently pulled them away from him. Yet, the children wept even louder.

Darvin then looked at Fearian in desperation.

"There has to be another way, you can't just accept this! That's not how you solve the problem!" Darvin approached him until he was close enough face to face.

"I told you, I don't think I truly belong because the men hate me here, even when I'm trying to be good, so I'm better off and this time... I'm leaving for good," Fearian confessed.

"Please don't... Don't... Not again... " Darvin sobbed as Fearian gave another hug to him.

As Onel and the men watched the mournful scene, he couldn't help but stand there and watch with disappointment, yet with empathy as well, but his negative perspective took over, letting horrible words slip out of his lips.

"Of course... You don't belong here and you deserve it."

Fearian experienced pain from other people, but hearing these words from his own father for the first time hurt him differently. Darvin darted his head at him.

"Dad? How could you... "

Fearian grabbed Darvin's arm and silenced him with his grip on his shoulder. "It's okay, I expected this to happen," Fearian said as he stared into his father's eyes and searched for the fatherly love that was just there. Unfortunately, there wasn't any left.

"So, this is my final goodbye... Take care of Bryan for me and keep the boys safe," Fearian said as he turned around to leave.

Darvin went to hug the children as they wept and mourned for Fearian to return, yet the men encouraged the idea of him leaving, and they began to shout that he deserved to be treated as an outcast. All while Onel stood there and watched his son walk away with a broken heart.

"Onel and his sons will fall to their demise... Their death is nigh...

Fearian stopped in his track before he continued any further; he turned to look around, searching for the source of the whisper.

"W-Wait... Did you hear that?" Fearian's eyes widened as he looked at his family.

"Hear what? What are you going to do this time?!" Onel cried angrily.

"He will pay for it...

Fearian heard it again. "I-It's back! Can't you hear it?!" He cried worriedly and strode towards his father, but the guards stopped him.

"Stop making fun of yourself and leave already!" One of the men cried.

"No no no you don't understand! Dad can't you hear it?! Darvin?!"

The guards tightened their grip on his arms and pulled him away as he struggled.

"I just heard it! Dad! Darvin! You're all in danger! Just listen to me please! Someone or something is coming to cause you harm!" He kicked and yelled as they kept dragging him while the men's yelling and shouting drowned his warnings.

"The time that he leaves is when the ships and wagons arrive within a week. Now he's going to be put in a cell so he wouldn't bother you anymore," the king called out before he led the way back to the palace.

Fearian's heart ached even more as that haunting image of death, the one that he thought of in the grey room, had returned. Without his protection, he can't stand to see an unknown murderer spill his family's blood.
