Chapter Eighteen : The Truth
"Hush now my child and do not weep, for the Fathers above will wash your fear away, and keep you far from harm in their embrace... " Fearian calmly lullabied as Bryan was soundly curled in his father's arms.
The physical pain in his injured body did not bother nor interrupt his lullaby; thus, they were washed away when his heart calmed at the sight of his son in his room, safe and sound. Upon his embrace, he didn't want to let go, and so he landed a gentle kiss on his son's head and laid his cheek on Bryan's head.
"Can't believe Red did this to you." Kyvan kept glueing his palm on his face. He was sitting next to Fearian with his elbows resting on his knees.
"Who's Red?" Fearian didn't tear his face away from his son. He kept staring at nothing.
"That Hunter, the one that chased after you and yanked you from the sky, he shouldn't have done that to you." He exhaled as he laid his back against the wall.
"Red... Red what?"
"Red Carvar Minsan, one of the skilled Hunters we have in the central city."
"Huh... Red Minsan... He looked familiar when I first saw him outside the forest, but where did I see his face before?" Fearian hugged his son tighter.
Kyvan said nothing but sighed again, that is until Darvin opened the curtain to Fearian's room and entered with a lumping blue figure, supported by Darvin's unharmed arm and Gholt's shoulders. Fearian finally tore his eyes away from nothing and darted at Darvin's entrance, and his eyes widened a little when he realised who it was beside his brother.
Shock washed all over Onel's face as he saw his son lying on the bed in a fatal state, his thick long orange hair was no longer there, but only a stubble remained on his head, and what concealed that stubble were layers of bandages with the dark blood visibly seeping and soaking at the back of his head.
A large dark green leaf, wet with dense liquid medicine was stuck to his cheek, covering the scar he received when the beast tried to attack his father.
His wing was open from the solid wood that was wrapped to the broken bone, taking away the comfort of closing his wing, and finally, the red gem on his choker was slightly flickering, which brought regret to surface outside Onel's body.
"D-Dad... You're hurt." Fearian wanted to sit up and go to his father, but Kyvan stopped him by putting a hand on his shoulder, giving him a sympathetic squeeze.
Fearian glanced at Kyvan then at Onel, after a quick moment, he remained on his bed. "Dad I'm Sorr--"
"No Fearian," Onel approached him and knelt. "I'm the one who should be apologising to you, you don't need to be guilty about it," Onel said. "I'm truly sorry... Sorry for not raising you well like I promised and I'm sorry for saying cruel and harsh things to you when you were only trying to be good to others." Tears began to build up in his eyes, shimmering like sapphires in the moonlight.
"Seeing you get hurt as you fight for me while all I did was flee? I feel ashamed of myself for letting you get in harm's way." His words slowly trailed to sobs and laid his head on the edge of the bed, sobbing more.
Fearian moved his arm and landed it on his father's with a gentle squeeze, and his ruby eyes began to shimmer as well. "It's alright... It's alright I... I have nothing else to say but... I'll forgive your actions, you were just tired of my troubles that I've caused and--"
"I have a confession to make," Onel rose his head and looked at his eyes. "I have the truth that I've been hiding from everyone, and it's the reason why I wasn't always with you when you grew." He wiped his tears with his sleeve and took a few breaths to calm his heart, but it still hurt from what he was about to say.
Fearian, Darvin, Gholt and Kyvan looked at him as they waited for his secret to be revealed.
"Remember when you told me about the black star in the sky? At first, it bothered me a little, but when you mentioned that it shrunk in size, it brought the fear to my heart," his body shivered.
"That beast that attacked you and the children and came for me next? It wasn't all a coincidence, and when that beast came to me, it killed the mage who banished evil in that star, then the star itself disappeared and unleashed its prisoners." The sadness was slowly replaced with fear as he spoke.
"That Dark Meanian," Fearian said. "he kept saying things about struggling with his form and trying to kill you... Does that mean he's--"
"The beast that now turned into a Dark Meanian is the prisoner of the black star, along with two others." Onel told him.
"So there's more evil Meanians?" Gholt's voice trembled slightly.
"But why does he have a strong grudge towards you? And do you two know each other?" Darvin asked.
"I'm afraid yes, we do know each other for he and his sons are our relatives." Onel turned his head to look at Darvin and Gholt, filled with sorrow and concern.
"Relatives?" Fearian repeated.
"The reason why he wants to torture you and murder me was that I couldn't stand him, so I stood up to him and tried to fight back. That was a time where that mage saved my life and banished those Meanians," Onel explained.
"However, it was only the mage and I who knew about this incident, and we decided to not tell King Salvador the truth of what happened since... We thought we solved the problem." His shoulders slumped after he spoke the final words.
"So those Dark Meanians were mistreating you until a mage saved you, but you decided not to report it to King Salvador?" Fearian repeated what his father said.
"But dad you know we can't handle the Dark Meanians on our own, every Dark Meanian seen in sight must be captured and brought to the King alive. Why did you refuse to tell him?" Darvin explained seriously.
"Because I was sick of problems and troubles, and if I did tell him, then I would've been sentenced to prison or possibly death for reporting so late." Tears rained again but heavily.
"Reporting so late? What do you mean by that?" Fearian demanded an answer without anger.
Onel hesitated, readying himself for what he was about to say next.
"The name Grevalon wasn't my creation, that man... " Onel took a few breaths. "That man, by the name of Blarence Grevalon, is my Dark father who has returned." Onel couldn't let out any more words but dropped his head on the bed and sobbed again.
