Inferiority complex: an unrealistic feeling of general inadequacy, sometimes marked by aggressive behaviour as compensation

Superiority complex: an attitude of superiority that conceals actual feelings of inferiority

To some, a superiority complex is thought to be an extreme case of an inferiority complex.

I've studied these in my AP Psychology class way back when, and I'll do my best, but I can't promise it will be 100% accurately portrayed. Just keep that in mind ****

Chanyeol lay in bed, staring at the ceiling and listening to the minutes tick by on the clock.

He was exhausted, having to keep up his act all day long. At this point, smoking didn't even help, unless he had hours to do it, which he didn't.

It seemed that every single person he had met was shoving their successes in his face, and judging all of his shortcomings in comparison. He felt invalidated, and it made him furious.

They were happy. They were married. They had a degree, and a steady job. They had figured their lives out. He was a well known dancer, she was an established model. What was Chanyeol? He was nothing. He had always been nothing. He would always be nothing. Despite his narcissistic front, he was dreadfully aware of his complete lack of importance.

He had bragged of the freedom in his single, unemployed life. He had gloated about having no responsibilities. A joke.

He had spoke of the easy nature of his youth, and how he didn't need to do anything, how he wasn't depended on, and thus couldn't disappoint. What a lie that was.

He had spoke of how stress free he was now that he had quit school. While most people his age were slaving away behind desks, he was free to do what he pleased. It turned out that freedom wasn't as freeing as he had thought.

But for all of his talk, they were just empty words. He didn't believe it any more than he believed that he was better than everyone else. He was the single most inadequate person on this earth.

Even earlier, the girl he met, who didn't even know him, had immediately seen him for what he was worth - nothing. She had frowned at him, turned her nose up at him, like he smelled of the garbage that came out of his mouth. It made him want to throw her down the stairs, and he wondered why he didn't.

Simple, because she was right about him. He wasn't good enough to lay a finger on her - it would soil her perfection.

He closed his eyes, and he dreamed of the day that he would amount to something more than another insignificant dropout.

He should have prayed to make better decisions, but alas, this story wouldn't be written if that was the case.
