4. Fiancé
Start the song. It's Nice Boys by Temporex.
Tyler woke up feeling completely and utterly loved. Despite how stressed work made him and how little time he actually got to spend at home, last night had made everything feel better.
Jenna had practically beamed when she saw him come in the door early after spending nearly every single night in his office for months. She'd made dinner and taught him how to make old fashioned ice cream before they'd spent the rest of the night in their bed. They'd both fallen asleep before they'd really accomplished anything there, but being together in any sense was more than enough for Tyler. It had kind of been the perfect night.
Tyler sleepily rolled over to wrap his arm around Jenna, only to find that she wasn't in bed with him. His eyebrows drew together in sleepy confusion. Just as he was about to get out of bed to go find his fiancé, she came back into their bedroom holding two coffee cups and wearing his button up shirt from work the day before. He smiled sleepily at her. It looked much better on her than it did on him.
"Good morning, sleepyhead," she said with her usual warm smile, letting him sit up before handing him the cup of coffee.
Tyler really wasn't much of a coffee person, but he'd suffer through it for Jenna. He laughed when he looked down at the mug.
"Did you pour Red Bull into a coffee cup?" He asked with a grin.
His fiancé smiled, climbing onto the bed beside him and kissing him lightly despite his morning breath before asking a sip of her coffee. "You don't like coffee, but I feel like everything tastes better when it's not in a can. Plus this feels more domestic. This is what it'll be like when we're married."
Tyler laughed before taking a sip of his domestic mug of energy drink. "I love you," he told her cheerfully.
She beamed, shifting to lay with her head on his shoulder so she was upright enough to drink her coffee while still snuggling up against him. "I love you too."
"What time is it?" Tyler asked her tiredly as he rested his head on top of hers.
"It's about seven, I think," Jenna replied, punctuating the words with a yawn that made it impossible for Tyler not to kiss her forehead. She giggled when he did so.
"I have to be back to the office by eight," Tyler said regretfully.
Jenna sat up, frowning at him. "You're supposed to have today off."
He sighed, taking a sip of his energy drink before speaking. "It's all of this overflow. They asked if I'd see a few clients on Saturdays until we can figure out how to shuffle them around so we can have time for them to come in on a weekday. Believe me. I don't want to go today anymore than you want me to."
"Did they tell you that you had to work today, or did you volunteer again?" Jenna asked, trying to keep her tone positive even though Tyler knew she hated this just as much as he did.
Tyler sighed, running his fingers through his sleep-mussed hair. "Jenna, no one else in that office is going to volunteer to come in on a weekend, but our clients need help. I know it sucks, but my clients shouldn't have to suffer just because we have budget cuts. Most of them already feel alone in their lives outside of my office. I don't want them to feel like I'm abandoning them."
"Ty, you're amazing at your job, and I love how much you care about other people, but you're running on empty. You rarely sleep or eat a proper meal. You don't spend time with your friends anymore. You don't take any time to do anything for yourself anymore. You don't even sing in the shower anymore, honey. I love that you want to help, but I need you to take care of yourself too," Jenna told him softly.
Tyler finished off his Red Bull before setting the mug down on the table next to his side of the bed. His fiancé looked sad when he met her eyes again. This was the worst part of these budget cuts. He had had a routine before, a way of organizing how much of his time went to the people and things in his life that mattered. Now that his job was swallowing up the majority of his time, everything else was subject to neglect. He knew that included Jenna, and he hated that. She deserved so much more.
"I'll take tomorrow off, okay? I won't volunteer to work next weekend either. We can spend all of tomorrow and next weekend together," Tyler assured her.
Jenna's eyes studied his face for a moment, and for a moment he thought she didn't believe him. She smiled though before kissing him softly, combing her fingers through his hair comfortingly as she rested their foreheads together.
"I love you," she reminded him.
"I love you too," he replied easily. "So much."
Jenna smiled, kissing him again and again before releasing him. "Okay. Go get a shower. I'll pack you a lunch. You better be singing in there, or I'll fill your lunch bag with raisins and nothing else."
"I'm marrying a monster," Tyler replied simply as he climbed out of bed, making her laugh.
"But you love me anyways," she retorted with a smirk.
"That I do," Tyler agreed as he grabbed a towel out of their closet and headed into their bathroom.
Another yawn escaped Tyler as he turned the shower on. Last night had been the first night he'd gotten more than four hours of sleep in over a month. Now that he'd slept a little bit, his body wanted him to hibernate. He didn't feel refreshed or well-rested despite having slept like a rock for eight hours last night. Now that his body knew what it had been missing, he was more tired than ever.
His eyelids were heavy despite the energy drink in his system as he climbed into the shower and picked up a bottle of shampoo. Turning the water to cold would probably wake him up, but he wasn't willing to risk that in January. Besides, he just wanted to feel warm and comfortable before he had to go to work until sundown.
"I don't hear singing! The raisins are in my hand," Jenna called, sounding further away than their bedroom.
Tyler laughed despite how tired he was. Jenna had always been able to make him laugh when he wasn't sure if that was something he was capable of. He couldn't wait to marry her and spend the rest of his life trying to return the favour.
Tyler hummed as he poured shampoo into his hand and started working it into his hair. He couldn't really think of any songs at the moment, too tired for his brain to work properly.
"Any requests?" He called back to his fiancé, making her laugh.
"The one with the, um...it was playing in that one place we went to after your brother's thing," Jenna provided.
Tyler grinned, his brain finding the song in his memories easily despite his exhaustion and the vague explanation. He sang loudly enough for her to hear from the kitchen, "Why do you build me up, buttercup baby...."
Jenna cheered as he began to sing, making him laugh and sing louder as he rinsed the soap out of his hair. He could hear her humming along off key in the kitchen as he sang, and he couldn't remember a moment before this one where he'd loved her as much as he did right now. She finished the song off with him, filling in the words she didn't know with little mumbly sounds that made him smile.
As soon as Tyler was out of the shower, he wrapped a towel around his waist and went out into the kitchen, hugging Jenna from behind as she zipped up his lunch box. She laughed as he kissed along her neck.
"You're all wet!" She whined, but she was smiling from ear to ear.
"I love you so much," he told her, disregarding her complaint.
Jenna turned around in his arms, wrapping hers around his neck and smiling at him adoringly. "I love you too." She pushed his wet hair off of his forehead. "Are you sure you can't just stay home? You've worked overtime every weekend since November."
Tyler sighed, resting his forehead against hers and holding her just a little bit closer. "I'll try to be home by seven, okay? Even if it means getting a little behind on paperwork."
Ever trying to be supportive, Jenna shook her head. "No, don't put off your paperwork. I know that will just stress you out more. We'll have all of tomorrow to spend time together. Don't stress out over me today, okay? Just have a good day at work, and don't you worry about me at home. I'll be fine. Maybe I'll go visit my sister today or something. I'll be fine. Don't worry about me."
Tyler let out a quiet huff before kissing her one more time. "Seven. I'll be home by seven," he promised.
Jenna smiled, kissing him once more. "Seven," she agreed. "Now go get dressed and brush your teeth. Do you want me to start your car for you so you won't freeze to death on your way to work?"
Having a fiancé who constantly did everything she could to improve Tyler's life was beyond anything he couldn't ever guessed he'd find for himself. He loved her so much for it, though, and he hated himself for not making more of an effort to show her just how much he appreciated everything she did for him.
"I might as well do it when I get dressed. You'll freeze to death if you go out there in just my shirt," Tyler told he'd with a smile, kissing her forehead. "You just stay in here where it's warm."
Jenna smiled, wrapping her arms around his neck. "I wish you could stay here and keep me warm. I'm going to miss you all day."
"I'll miss you too," Tyler assured her.
He kissed her again softly before releasing her and heading back into their room to get dressed. His exhaustion weighed him down once again as he pulled clothes out of their closet. Seven o'clock couldn't come soon enough.
