I suggest we get out of this room ASAP
"Good choice." The person says. You can't discern if their response is genuine due to the lack of emotion in their voice, but you still nod and rush towards the exit.
Just as you close the door behind you, you hear a loud noise. An explosion goes off the mere second your hand separates from the handle. It sends a chill down your spine. You turn to look at your new friend and their petrified expression is enough to assure you that they didn't know what was about to happen if you two stayed either. Now that that was out of the way, you try forcing the other doors open one by one, but in the darkness, it's hard to navigate and too easy to slam yourself against the wall instead. Your friend (Let's call them Fin for convenience purposes) goes back to the room you met, the one that's probably engulfed in flames by now. You try to hold them back, fearing that they might get injured, but they dismiss your concern without saying a word.
Fin comes back with a makeshift torch, using the fire from the explosion and the torn-off leg of a wooden chair. You use it to light up the hallway. To your surprise, there is a window on the ceiling. It's big enough for a person to crawl through. The pain from your twisted ankle grows stronger from the sheer thought of going through there, so you offer your friend a lift, hoping they will have the courtesy to come back for you.
You pull them up, trying not to tip over as you struggle to keep your balance. You sit down to rest, waiting for them to scavenge for something useful, some food would be great. The rumbling in your stomach reminds you that you haven't eaten in ages. You strain your brain to remember how you even got to this point. What exactly happened before you woke up in that room? So many questions and no answers at all.
Time seems to pass so slowly. Especially when you are waiting. The lack of control keeps you on edge. It's weird what thoughts go through your head when you have no memories. Your imagination pictures a steak even though you're not sure if you've eaten one before. The concept is there, along with many other things, and yet not a single clue about the person you used to be before you woke up.
Was it the same with Fin? Too bad you can't talk with them. You can't shake the feeling that you know them from somewhere. They seem so familiar, even though they are the only human you've seen so far. Are they even human? Are you? For all you knew both of you could be aliens.
Your random chain of thoughts is being broken by the sound of rustling. You look up to see Fin's bewildered face staring back at you. There is a note of worry in their eyes and you feel the urge to ask them what's wrong, but stop yourself, knowing that you'll end up being electrocuted. You gesture to your mouth in a signal to ask them if they have found any food. For your enormous relief, they nod, tossing you a protein bar before dropping to the floor themselves.
Preoccupied with your snack, you ignore the strange way they stare at you as if they've seen a walking dead. They point at you and then back at themselves, but you have no idea what they are trying to say. They continue that movement back and forth desperately, but you still can't connect the dots and assume they want your half-eaten protein bar. You hand it to them, but they shake their head and roll their eyes, annoyed that you can't understand their memo. Not knowing what to do, you just shrug it off and wave your hand dismissively.
Your attention is immediately caught by the shiny metal object in their hand. A keychain. You check each lock to see if one of the keys will match.
