Hell no!

You lift your hand from the handle and look behind your shoulder. Fin isn't moving from their spot, simply sitting there with their hands crossed, observing every move you make. Their expression seems somehow different, but you can't put your finger on it.

"Not going? That's a good choice." They say nonchalantly. "Otherwise the toxic air would have poisoned you. It would be such a shame, you went this far after all. I would hate to see you end up like the others."

You raise an eyebrow, unsure of what to say. Your mouth dries up as you muster the courage to open it, but Fin cuts you off.

"Who am I? Oh come on now, you already know. I am you. As for why you are here? There is no one else better suited to answer that question than you. So here you go," they hand you a tape. "A bit of an ancient technology, I know, considering the year we are currently living in. Don't give me that look, put it in the VHS, and it will give you all the answers. I'm simply doing what I was instructed, so go on watch it."

You do as you're told as you see no other option. As you press the button, you see your face appear on the TV box after a few long seconds of static. It's a much younger version of you. While you speak there is still a shine in your eyes and your voice isn't as cold and brooding as you came to know it.

"Hello, this is... day 7 I think? Time passes slowly when you are alone with your thoughts for a long time. So, anyway. It's day 7 since I became the only person on Earth. Ok, that's a bit of a stretch really, more like the only person within thousands of kilometers of any other living being.

I'm getting off track. I'm doing this vlog as a small piece of documentation following the event of the nuclear bomb that went off a week ago. If my team's research is correct, then it should have wiped out the majority of wildlife in this continent. I can't go out. The toxic gases and radiation would kill me immediately. Same as it did to my colleagues. I'm so scared and lonely. I don't know if somebody will come for me. I can't lose hope however, it hasn't been that long. I'm pretty sure they'll send a rescue team as soon as they see the signal I sent them."

It cuts to the next entry. Your tone shifts considerably to an overwhelming note of pessimism in it. The dark circles under your eyes further underlie the despair in your voice.

"It's been 9 months now. I haven't talked to anyone in 9 months. The only thing to keep me company here are the thousands of books and research papers in the facility. I've read all of them. Everything I can get my hands on to keep my mind busy. Otherwise, I will descend into madness, if only there was someone to keep me company..."

Next entry. You somehow seem older than you currently are and wonder to yourself how is this even possible. This time you seem unnervingly happy.

"I did it! I found a way to duplicate particles using the equipment in this lab. It took me 10 years of endless work and research, but I finally did it! In time, I will be able to make a copy of myself and put an end to my loneliness."

Next entry. There are now two of you. The gray hairs on your head signal that your past self is somewhere around their late fifties, but the doppelgänger next to them appears to be much younger.

"After many trials, I can now proudly introduce my first successful copy. They are much better looking than me, aren't they? Ha ha. I used a DNA sample from way back when was I first doing the experiments. It would do me no good if I had a companion that's as old and decrepit as me now, would it? Heh."

Next entry. This time you are alone, sitting on a chair, with an IV bag attached to you and long white hair running down wrinkled features.

"It's been a long time since I last recorded a video. I've been meaning to for years, but I simply forget most of the time. So... it turns out that someone with the same life, memories, and opinions as you isn't really that interesting as a companion. It's just talking yourself with extra steps. Now I have someone that's just as bored as me. They passed away sadly, I couldn't even muster the tears to mourn their death. I just took another DNA sample from them and did the cloning once more, then trice more and so on... what I learned is, that no matter how hard I tried I couldn't keep them alive for more than a year. The x-rays coming from the duplication machine gave them radiation poisoning that slowly ate them from the inside. It felt cruel to keep replicating them, knowing that their lives would be cut short like that of a bug's, but... merely having them there was still better than being alone."

The next entry was from one of the doppelgängers, they were staring at the camera with their cold lifeless eyes, that exuded nothing but apathy. Their face was pale, red, and swollen with bubbles forming around their temples, lips dry like the Sahara desert. It appeared that their flesh was rotting away.

"The original is dead. I wasn't aware of the existence of these videos until now. I'm glad. I'm so extremely glad that I found those tapes. Now I don't have to feel sad that someone like them isn't a part of this world anymore. I myself am waiting for the reaper to take me. The others still don't know the truth, I'm debating on whether or not I should tell them. I'm currently the oldest and if they don't find the truth from me, I might as well take this secret to the grave. I don't know what to do now. It hurts so much to be alive. Should I just kill everyone to make them avoid suffering the same fate as me? Maybe... I'll continue this vlog when I have the answer."

Next and final entry. Their face was now covered in bandages. There was a bloody ice pick in one hand and a small metal hammer in the other.

"I got it. I even have a solution when it comes to having no one new to talk to. Sometimes one needs to resort to ancient methods to resolve modern issues. With this simple device, I now have a blank slate. A person with no memories, that I can exploit in any way I find fit." They chuckle." I can't exact my revenge on the old scoundrel now that they kicked the bucket, but this will do. They are all the same after all. I'll turn their final days on this Earth into a death game. May the strongest survive..."

That's the end of them. You turn to look at Fin, who at this point is more than likely not Fin, but just another one of your clones. Or more like a clone of the one who duplicated you, who is also you.

While still trying to process what you just watched, you hear creaking sounds coming from the walls. You notice the opening of a compartment behind the large bookshelf next to you. An ominous figure enters the room. The bandages around their face cover the hideous mess behind them. Two bloodshot eyes emerge from the darkness like fading lights, still flickering from the deep seethed wrath that fueled them.

"I did as you told me," says Fin's imposter. "You're going to give me the antidote now right? Just like we agreed."

"...oh, yeah sure," they were met by a pitiful glance from the walking corpse, idling in the shadows. Under the coat of whom glimmered the silver shine of a pistol.

There was a loud bang echoing between the four walls of this terrible room. It was followed by a thud of a body hitting the wooden boards, which was then followed by a faint gasp escaping your lips.

"Don't give me that look. They are better off dying that way than ending up like me." The sinister figure retrieves their weapon. "There isn't a cure for cancer. I did that thing when you lie to get what you want. Anyway, now that you've reached this far into the game, I must first of all congratulate you."

There is a small round of applause from them. You open your mouth to say something, but they cut you off.

"No words please, I already know what you are going to say. I am aware of how my brain functions, thank you." They let out a cough, covering their mouth with their frail hand. You can see the veins bulging underneath their translucent skin. Their voice becomes progressively raspier as they continue to speak. "You won this game. You are the only one who went this far." They toss the gun in your direction. "Now do me the honors and put me out of my misery."

A) Don't shoot them
