You walked around the empty streets as you normally did, you would usually be doing this early in the morning but...your recent dilemma has been causing great effects for you, so you needed a break, you needed time away. Every morning you remembered walking past a pole with many papers taped onto it. Though this time, there was another paper, one you didn't see this morning until now. You walk over to the cold pole and read the bold handwritten text.
"ROOMMATE WANTED"
It didn't describe what kind of roommate the offerer wanted, it just said that phrase along with small information like the owner's phone number and the address, as well as the money you'd have to pay. It only cost $140 a month, why not? Besides, you knew going back to your home with your parents wouldn't be a very smart option, especially now.
You ripped the paper off of the pole and continued walking as you reread over it again and again, something seemed off. The address, not like it wasn't there but it was basically in the middle of nowhere. You had only known because of the past road trips you took with your family, you remembered the field and spotting that old and rusty sign, the idea was perfect. You didn't care about the fact that the place was far, it was exactly what you wanted, and you did really need a place to stay after everything that's been going on with you and your parents. You continued walking and began to feel tired, you would have to go home again, hopefully, your parents are asleep by now. It was two hours past midnight, they should be asleep. You began to head your way back home, looking forward to what will bring you tomorrow.
You drove over to the place and looked only on the outside seeing how the front door was locked, thankfully the owner wasn't home, or else this situation you were in would probably be worse. The house itself had only shades of brown and white, not too bad, not too interesting, it was only one floor and that you didn't mind. "Doesn't seem too bad...." you mumbled while trying to look through the window, you could only see a nice living room with three different chairs. One was a soft green recliner, another was an old wooden rocking chair, and the other was a small wooden chair with bright colors painted on it, well only three colors, yellow, red, and blue. You continued looking around in the living space, seeing small photos hung up on the walls, the kitchen seemed to be connected with the living space. A small coffee table was there as well, on it was a tiny notepad and a clock with arms and legs.
Wait, what?
You repeated the phrase in your head again
'A clock with arms and legs'
You even had to look away for a few seconds before looking back through the window, the clock was walking, but as he continued walking he noticed something, he knew you were watching yet knew he couldn't look back. He did glance at you for a moment before suddenly disappearing.
You couldn't believe what you had just seen...
Was it real?
Or maybe it was your imagination?
You were shaking, contemplating on what you were going to do, on if that creature was really in there, but once you drove back home to your parents, you almost didn't care anymore if it was real or not, you picked up your phone as you continued packing. You called the number from the poster but no one had picked up the first time, you sighed and threw your phone onto your old bed that had no more blankets or sheets on it. You remembered you kept telling yourself you shouldn't stay up late anymore, that it'll "ruin your sleeping schedule" you laughed at the thought, what sleeping schedule?
But you knew the best thing to do was to sleep, even if you weren't tired.
---
You woke up the next morning, it was very early, the sun was bright as it felt like it was swallowing your whole room with light. You rubbed your eyes to adjust before feeling something. You were on your phone, good thing it didn't run too much of your battery while you slept. You opened up your bedside drawer and found the paper again and decided to give it another shot, maybe they'll answer this time. You saw your hands shake as you slowly mashed on the buttons.
"Hello?" A deep, monotoned voice said, they sounded almost as tired as you were.
"H-Hey, I was wondering about the wanted roommate poster..." You said into the phone, rubbing your eyes again, you were still having trouble adjusting to the bright sun.
The deep voice went silent, not like he was actually saying anything after your question, you could hear him mumbling to someone else in the background. You could hear noises in the background as well, what if it was the clock you saw?
"Cool! A new friend! Yay! When can we meet them?" You heard a child's voice say suddenly, you drew your ear away from the phone, the child's voice was a bit loud. You put your ear back on the phone to hear more. Another voice was heard on the phone, very different from the child's, it was soft but you could tell it was really scratchy and in a higher tone.
"S-Should we H-" but the scratchy voice was cut off by the deeper ones' again
"Alright, be here by 19:06 Wednesday" then they hung up.
"19:06? Must be military time they run by..." You thought You would have to show up tomorrow at 7:00 pm after searching desperately on the internet when you needed to be getting your things together. You decided to go to bed early so you wouldn't wake up late tomorrow besides, you already knew it was going to take you forever to get ready in the morning and get to the house in time. You started brushing your teeth until the thought of that time. 7 pm was kinda late to be going to someone else's house that you didn't even know unless it was a party of course. You spat out your toothpaste and turned off the light before you went to your room, you would have loads of time to get ready, right?
You walked towards your bed, it still had its pillows on it accompanied with a blanket. You got yourself into a comfortable position and began to doze off, but every time you did you kept waking up, that clock or whatever it was still kept popping up in your head. It still continued to send shivers down your spine.
But finally, after spending hours on your phone, you fell asleep.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You were in a warm house, the house you explored earlier. The inside of the house made you feel slightly safe as you traveled only through the kitchen and living room, odd, it was really dark outside. Then again, you did show up at seven. You continued to look around and even sat down in one of the chairs, you remembered the lights flickered at a point and you decided it was time to sleep as you yawned loudly but, where? You got out of the chair and heard the main light flicker again though it stayed off for a lot longer than it had before.
As you were getting up you felt a sudden pain in your chest that was burning like fire, maybe this is what heartburn feels like? You fell to the ground and heard your breaths starting to get short, not only was your chest burning like fire but so was your throat, you needed to get help from somebody, what if you were having a heart attack? 'No, I'm too young to die!' (I'm literally laughing as I wrote that holy moly) You thought as you tried to get up from the floor and off of your knees, each time you tried each result was disappointing. Your vision kept getting blurrier and darker every time you kept trying to focus on something. You couldn't get support from your knees any longer and laid on your back. It was relaxing for a moment, then you felt more pain, like something was being ripped out of you.
You yelled out as loud as you could even if your throat was burning like hell, even as you were losing more of your breath.
"W-WHATS GOING ON? PLEASE...HELP!"
You looked up to see something, round. You tried focusing your eyes on it even as you felt yourself and your body shutting down. It was the damn clock, that clock you can't get out of your head, you noticed the clock was holding something in its hand.
A heart?! No, no way could that be...
You looked down at your chest which was torn open, blood oozing everywhere onto you and around you every time you moved, you took another look at the clock. You wanted them to stop grinning at you, to stop looking at you, and laughing like this was some joke, you were in pain! Of course, it wasn't funny to you, how could someone be so insane?
Or maybe, you were going insane...
The clock opened its mouth and said something that echoed in your ears as you took one last breath.
"Don't worry I'm sure you'll be fine, eventually everyone runs out of time"
---
You woke up in a cold sweat and covered in tears but your chest wasn't burning, you could still feel your heart beating.
It was fine, just a nightmare, possibly one of the most intense ones in awhile.
You stretched your arms out before pulling out your phone that was plugged up to your charger. You saw a notification pop up
"MOVING OUT TODAY AT 7 PM!!!"
You jumped out of bed, dragging the blanket with you at your feet and began to get your shower ready, you looked at yourself in the mirror. God, your hair was a mess, your skin was a bit oily as well as your hair, and your face was flushed from crying. You closed your eyes and groaned before heading back to your room and grabbed a towel. You quickly took a glance at the time on your phone, 4:50 in the afternoon. You reread it again before dropping your phone and rushing yourself to the bathroom.
"HOW LONG DID I SLEEP?!" you thought as you went back into the bathroom, you did have a habit of doing this, waking up late in the afternoon especially at this time. You quickly rinsed off and dried off once getting out of the shower. You quickly put on your clothes as you gathered your bags and boxes. You started the car quickly and fired up your GPS for directions, you quickly put in the address and started driving as quickly as you could, thank god you didn't get in a wreck, and thank god your parents didn't see you. You stopped suddenly at a red light, almost not even seeing it until the last minute. You stepped hard onto your breaks and took a few moments to breathe as you felt the adrenaline rushing through you. 'Calm down, just be thankful you didn't get hurt. The light then turned green. 'Now drive.'.
---
Three hours later, you finally arrived at the house. The same house you saw that- 'No' You shook your head, you were going to do this, you didn't spend this morning panicking and getting ready for nothing. You felt more encouraged as you opened up the car door and slowly got out. You kept trying the shake off the feeling, the same feeling from your nightmare, you couldn't be like this in front of your new, possible friends. You took a few deep breaths as you walked up to the door and knocked. You heard shuffling and footsteps coming towards the door which made you grow more nervous than you already were.
What you saw on the other side surprised you the most
A green feathered duck, or could possibly be a bird, and a yellow little boy with blue hair and small freckles answered the door, both with nervous yet excited faces. You noticed how cartoonish yet realistic the duck looked, just like that clock. They both looked at you, you could tell they were trying to look their best, that they didn't want you to be weirded out by the two. You saw the green duck motion over at something around the corner, you couldn't see who though. "Please, we have to introduce ourselves, Harry, they're our new guest." The duck said, their voice almost matched with the scratchy one you heard on the phone. Harry or whoever they were talking to mumbled before walking towards the door. You stared at the figure, you couldn't tell what it was, you could only see that it was very tall from the others, red, possibly human-like, and matched the monotone voice that had talked to you on the phone.
"Are you the one from the phone about the roommate wanted poster?" The red figure asked. You didn't notice that you were staring at them until you noticed the duck trying to snap you out of your gaze. "S-Sorry! Um...." you were starting to sweat even more "Yes I'm the one who wanted to know about the poster....which I'm guessing it's still good to live here r-right?" you stuttered nervously. "Of course you can stay! You're our new friend now!" the small yellow boy said. "My name is Doi! But people call me Manny!" Manny said pointing to himself and smiling before walking over to his green friend and tugged on his brown suit sleeve "This is Robin!" Manny said as he pointed to the duck, Robin, then running over towards his tall red friend, he hopped beside him and he pointed to him as well "And this is Harry!" he also pointed up towards Harry, the red thing.
"What's your name?" Manny asked gesturing towards you, you could tell he was the most optimistic out of the trio.
"My name is.... Y/N" You said trying to seem calm and not nervous at the same time.
Some were impressed by your name or tried to act like it, you weren't convinced that they liked your name, or maybe they are that good at concealing it. You were very sure until you heard "What a nice name!" someone else said in a British accent, it didn't come from anyone of them, the voice sounded more feminine, but you didn't want to assume. You looked around for where the voice came from to see a cartoonish yet realistic sketchbook looking towards you with a soft smile, it gave you goosebumps. "My name is Paige but I prefer to be called Sketch! I have to say your name is very creative!" You looked at the sketchbook with wide eyes then back at Robin, Manny, and Harry with the same terrified look.
"Oh yeah, that's Sketch.." Manny said with a plastered grin, but you watched it fade away as he had grown very nervous. "We need to talk to you about something, but I think we'd all prefer you wearing something, more appropriate and suited for this," Robin mumbled. You had an instant feeling of confusion wash across you, what did he mean? You changed clothes, right? You didn't want to disrespect them so you nodded and told them you'd be going out to your car to get some clothes. You looked through your bags and found some clothes that at least looked decent and matched, you got out of your car, still really confused on why Robin had said that to you, especially in a bothered tone.
You shut your car door, well, more like slammed your car door shut. You walked into the house, getting odd looks from them until you reached the bathroom.
And there you saw it, you were still dressed in your sleep clothes.
"Wow, well I know I must've made a great impression on them." You said sarcastically before you started to change clothes.
